Suicide Bomber Strikes Near Defense Secretary Gates
December 04, 2007 8:08 AM
ABC News' Martha Raddatz Reports: A suicide bomber in Kabul, Afghanistan Tuesday struck near Defense Secretary Robert Gates, who is in Afghanistan for talks with President Hamid Karzai and other officials.
The suicide bomb went off on the same airport road Gates was on, within 20 minutes of Secretary Gates' convoy, a U.S. official tells ABC News.
The Associated Press reports the bomber struck a two-vehicle convoy belonging to NATO's International Security Assistance Force near the city's airport. There were no casualties in the NATO convoy, however the blast wounding civilians passing nearby.
A suicide bomber also struck the last time Vice President Dick Cheney visited Afghanistan.

How misleading can you be? The story title "Suicide Bomber Strikes Near Defense Secretary Gates" implies to the average person that it was an attack on his personal convoy. But once you read on, you'll notice that it wasn't his convoy, he wasn't in the area, and he probably didn't even know it went on. Heck, it doesn't even say if it was 20 minutes before or 20 minutes after! Stop trying to make us believe that he was in imminent danger because of this event. Perhaps next time, a homicide bomber will strike within 1,000 miles two days before a dignitary and you can mislead the public with another sensational headline to try to attract site visitors...

ABC, CBS, NBC, CNN are all in the pocket of the DNC and are still struggling with the 2000 election. Anything, ANYTHING that can appear to sound negative about what is going on in Iraq, Afghanistan, or anyplace else and puts Bush in a bad light will be twisted to their purpose. This is a non-story except the bad news has been light for a while and they search high and low for these sorts of things.

Sounds like good news to me. The only one who died was the bomber.

I agree with the comments of "Reader 2". That about sums it up in a nutshell.

the reporter failed to point out the possible contribution to global warming from the bomb!

still a homicide bomber that just happend to die as a side effect. The correct label: homicide bomber with side effect.

It seems everyone here agrees ABC, will you people actually start learning from what your customers say about your product, or are you all going to be stubborn and keep producing the same flawed product? I'm sure someone out there will be glad to take over the news business once ABC has drivin its image as low as many of the failing print media companies are experiencing.

With traditional news outlets losing readership (money) left and right, I think they're getting desperate.
Bear in mind, however, that the person who writes the story isn't the person who writes the headline (that being the Copy Editor), so don't be too hard on the reporter.

Of course he knew it went off behind him. I don't know about you but every time a car bomb went off I jumped a little. After time you get used to it but not when you just get off a jet. But is it news? Not really, just a coincidence.

I would like to know if Hillary remained calm and presidential durng this time. After all, as a mother she is even more concerned then the rest of us.

Reader 2 - Both parties get unfair treatment; Bush and the GOP got a walk from the media leading up to the war in Iraq. But if you don't like the ABC product then don't use it - that's how the free market works. Besides, this story doesn't have anything to do with party or partisanship.

Relax people. Sheesh, conspiracy this and that...

Im interested in knowing if some policy Bush has instituted had anything to do with this poor, globally warmed, uninsured and misunderstood SUICIDE Bomber's decision to blow himself up?

I wonder if the enemy bomber was actually after Gates. That would send quite a message. Due to security and diversionary tactics NATO probably uses there was no way of knowing which convoy was actually his. Maybe the bomber was taking his chances on limited intelligence and hit the wrong target. Good thing they were not successful. No, I am not high.

Jim,if it has nothing to do with a party or partisanship why run the story! We all know that bombs and gunfire are heard everyday there!

Here's some news ABC. The US military is winning. Even the Washington Times is starting to admit it.
Posted by: Rick | Dec 4, 2007 9:33:45 AM
Ironically, it is usually neo-cons that jump on a story like this as support for why we are fighting and need to vote republican.
The title of the story is sensationalist. There is no mention of Afganistan, if I was not aware of Gates being in the Middle East right now, I might have thought this happened in the US.
Like the first comment stated, the incident happened 20 minutes either before or after Gates was in the area. It's like saying I was almost in a car crash, because I passed the scene of an accident that happened 20 minutes earlier.

What, no analysis of the disproportionate impact on women and minorities?

I was stationed at Bagram Air Base when the homicide bomber attacked the gate that Vice President Cheney MIGHT have travelled through that day. Just like in this case, it was reported in such a way as to let you believe there was actual danager to the VP. Somewhat misleading...
