Weather Parks Edwards’ Bus Tour
December 11, 2007 6:08 PM
ABC News' Raelyn Johnson Reports: Former Sen. John Edwards' "Main Street Express" bus tour came to a halt Tuesday due to icy weather conditions in Iowa City. The Democratic presidential candidate was forced to cancel planned stops in Davenport and Muscatine. But by mid afternoon he made his way to the famed Hamburg Inn in downtown Iowa City were he shook a few hands and admired the malted shakes.
The Hamburg Inn is the home of the coffee bean caucus where patrons place a coffee bean into the jar of his or her candidate of choice. Many of the candidates frequent the diner in the weeks leading up to the Iowa Caucus. Former President Bill Clinton made a stop on behalf of his wife Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y., just last month. The dinner will announce their winner, January 2, just one day before the official caucus.
Following the meet and greet Edwards summed up his mood about campaigning through a cold December in Iowa. "I feel energized by these last few weeks before the caucus. It feels good and positive and energetic to me, so I wish we could have had the events, but on the other hand we have plenty of time to have lots of events between now and the caucus."
He noted that while the weather might be unpredictable the night of the caucus, he believed he could count on his supporters to come out. "I think my caucus-goers are true believers in what we’re trying to do to change the country and I think they will be there on caucus night," said Edwards.
The "Main Street Express" is expected to pull out Wednesday with stops in Iowa City, Grinnell and Des Moines - weather permitting. Edwards will be joined by actor and supporter Tim Robbins.
