Romney on Economy: "We’re All a Little Nervous"
January 22, 2008 10:44 AM
ABC News' Matt Stuart Reports: Republican presidential hopeful Mitt Romney jumped on the news of this morning's fall in the stock market, saying "we're all a little nervous," hoping to underline his own experience working in business.
Speaking to the Republican Jewish Coalition in Boca Raton, Florida on Tuesday, Romney claimed that in his work "in the consulting business for 10 years...one of the great opportunities in life was to see things that everybody was convinced would never come back, it's only when they're convinced it's going down forever, then is the opportunity to become an investor and see things turn around," he added.
Romney frequently cites his experience in business on the stump, arguing it makes him uniquely qualified to handle the economy.
He remained optimistic in the face of the dour situation saying, "right now you're seeing probably the beginning of that kind of concern and that means there will be opportunity for our economic sector to come back."
The former governor of Massachusetts also joked about previously investing in a company called Sun Capital.
"My money's now in a blind trust, I hope I still have it at Sun Capital and I hope that as of tonight, Sun Capital still has it too. We're all a little nervous about that," Romney said.
Later, Romney cracked that "it's interesting that right now the economy is on people's minds, I think that's in part because of what's happening in the stock market. I almost fear for this meeting to be over. Maybe I should just stay here and talk all day."
Even as he joked about the crisis, Romney recognized its seriousness and said, "My guess is that our stock market is hitting the circuit breakers or will relatively soon and there’s a great deal of nervousness about what’s happening in the stock market."

Mitt Romney is uniquely qualified in business and governance for our time of economic concerns. Our Government is in great need of a “turn-around” in the way we handle our finances in our country. He did a great job of lowering taxes in Massachusetts and creating jobs in that state and he put together a great team to pull the U.S. Olympics out of the red and into a profit making venture. The fact that he created his own wealth tells you that he knows something about business. I believe that Romney is the best choice for President. Let's get someone in their who knows what he is doing. The job of President of the United States is not the place for on the job training!

I would believe he knew what he was doing if he could find a position and STICK to it!

I agree that Romney is up for the job. He is the only one running that has any substantial experience in the real world, and he has been successful in most endeavours that he undertakes.
I am tired of career politicians.

Mitt Romney is just another rich kid that wants to be the Big Guy. His campaign is ego driven. He has no principles or true understanding of the real economic problem.

Consider this, If Mitt doesnt win the election for President, do Clinton and Obama or Sen. McCain for that matter have anymore experience in there individual careers of turning bad situations around? Honestly? They do a lot of talking, but have they walked the walk? What have they to show for why themselves? They all are great individuals with good intentions. As were all the presidents of this country who led us wrong. They just didnt have the experience, they knew what they wanted to do to help, but they didn't know how to do it (no offense towards any of them). Hands down, looking from a resume's perspective, Romney has positive experiences with what he's been asked to do thus far, he has done it before more so than any other candidate who is currently running. i love them all, but for what this country needs now is a "no-brainer". We need someone who know's how.

Now that Thompson is out of the race, I have question about Romney. I understand that in the LDS, "the family" is ruled by "the prophet" and must receive his approval in all they do. Who is the Romney prophet? If it came between pleasing the prophet or pleasing the citizens of the US, who will be the priority? How much of his success in Staples, was his, or was it backed by the LDS? I respect the family values of the Mormons, but beyond that, I have a lot of questions. If Romney was elected, how much influence would the LDS have on the nation?

If Romney is elected, will he place limits on the premium insurance companies will charge for his manditory health plan? My son lives in Massachusetts. His monthly premium for a family of four just jumped from $600 per month to $1000 per month. I do not know to many people with income enough to pay $12000 per year for medical insurance. I don't believe to many people could afford the $7200 that was assessed before the increase. How much higher will the insurance companies be able to raise the premiums? In essence, how will the plan benefit the citizens of our country. It seems to me it just adds another burden that most cannot afford.

Mitt Romney is the ONLY one running for
president , who, my opinion, who has the
economic experience and ability to turn
our country around. Also his morals
and character are above reproach. I just
wish he would somehow or other make himself
better known and come across to other as
he has to me. I try to persuade all I
can to everyone I talk with.
