Back to Iraq for Obama
January 24, 2008 6:19 PM
ABC News' Sunlen Miller Reports: Gone are the days where Obama mentions "some of his opponents" when he criticizes his presidential opponents on their vote for the Iraq war.
At this stage of the game, he's naming names.
Launching one of his fiercest criticisms against Senator Clinton, D-N.Y., on the subject of Iraq, Obama told a South Carolina crowd just two days before the state's Democratic primary, "I have been open about my reasons for opposing the war, but one of my opponents in this race, Senator Clinton, has tried, I believe, to rewrite history.
"Now," Obama continued, "she's saying she wasn't really voting for war. She cast her vote after failing to read the National Intelligence Estimate on Iraq, a report that raised enough doubts that the majority of Democratic senators who read it voted against the war."
Obama's comments came during opening remarks at a roundtable with war veterans in Beauford, South Carolina.
His criticisms are nothing new -- they were firmly embedded in his stump speech while campaigning in the early state of Iowa. But recently, the Clinton campaign has questioned Obama's action against the war after his initial opposition, saying while he was a Senator he still voted to fund the war and did not take leadership in working toward ending it.
"Senator Clinton has not said her vote was a mistake," Obama countered to the recent criticism, "She has simply blamed the civilian and military leaders who carried out the policy she authorized. We don't know why Iraq met the threshold for war, how can we know what means the threshold in the future?"
By comparison, Obama recalled his early opposition to the war.
"We need more accountability in our leaders. You can't undo a vote for war just becuase a war stops being popular," Obama said, "Voters need to judge us about the judgments we've made and the lessons we've learned."

Yes! Take It To Her! Mmost democrats knew the same information she new and voted against it. She voted for it because she knew she was going to be running for President and wanted to "look tough" as a woman so the Republicans couldnt paint her as weak on forign policy if the war was popular!

Dream on! Obama will never win the General Elections. Whether you admit it or not, he is being positioned as the rightful Democratic candidate but he will definitely lose to mc cain or any Republican candidate. Dream on Obama! If you want another republican in the White House vote for Obama in the Primaries!

Obama is very weak on National Security think about for a second will Obama give this type of speech on the general elections against Mccain or Romney,Guilani when things are going well in Iraq as per the surge. So all the Obama supporters this will be a tough sell for him being an anti-war liberal. The republicans will have fun with his stands big time.

Barack On!
I was living in NY at the time and called Senator Clinton's office along with 10's of 1000's of others, asking her to vote against the war. The U.N. wanted us to wait, Senators Byrd, and Kennedy spoke out against going, and yes Barack Obama without a large platform to speak from spoke out against going to war.
If Senator Clinton had listened to some of these voices and spoken out when she was needed, 1000's of lives would have been spared. And the 100's of billions of dollars that went to War Profiteers might have been used for healthcare, education, and upgrading national security.
So good for you Barack.

She didn't read the report before voting whether or not we should go to war. I think that says more than enough about what kind of leader she is. You might get away with summaries and scanning a few docs on some other votes, but if you are going to invade a country, you better damn well know why.

Excuse me, who is rewriting history? Senator Obama, you were not a United States Senator when you gave your anti-war speech. I spoke against the war too....elect me.

Hardly anyone read the report because the constraints of time didn't allow for it.
