ABC News' David Muir and Raelyn Johnson Report: Cate Edwards, 25, the eldest daughter of presidential candidate former Sen. John Edwards, D-N.C., was involved in a car accident in Chapel Hill, North Carolina Friday night.

Edwards told ABC News Monday his daughter is "doing fine."

"I talked to Cate late last night. She was hit from behind, I think, by a drunk driver, and any other details they'll have to tell you, Edwards said, "I don't know much more beyond than that, but she's doing fine."

Earlier Monday, Edwards Campaign spokesperson Eric Schultz told reporters, "It was a minor car accident, and Cate was unharmed."

As first reported by ABC affiliate WTVD in Raleigh Durham, North Carolina, the car Cate was driving was struck by an alleged drunk driver as she approached a red light.

The ABC affiliate reported Chapel Hill Police charged 45-year-old Carol Small with driving while intoxicated, and reported Edwards' car, a 2007 Ford Sedan, suffered an estimated $2000 worth of damage.

The Edwards family is based in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Following last Tuesday's New Hampshire primary, Cate Edwards flew home to North Carolina Wednesday morning.

Cate Edwards is a Harvard Law student, but has most recently been actively campaigning for her father in Iowa and New Hampshire.  She has focused on urging students and young people to vote for her dad.

Gosh, some people here are so dumb like this "Edwards is a victim" posting. What is Edwards doing that make that person write that? Btw, what happen with the 2 plane accindents that Obama campaign gotten into? Were they just for publicity too?
We need Obama back in Chicago and Illinois to ear the salary we have been paying him for doing nothing in Washington. Is time for him to work with his hands instead of using just his mouth. Why Obama don't try to mediate in the huge transportation issue we have now and the CTA mass transportation funding bickering between his two friends the Governor of Illinois and the Major of Chicago. Isn't Obama the one that is capable to negotiate and work for the people? Why he doesn't do it here with the CTA funding problems we have in the city. Obama is all talk and his cult followers are desperate to buy into it.

That is a disgraceful comment. John's oldest son was killed in a car accident and they try to avoid speaking about it on the campaign trail as often as possible.

Looks like the DWI driver is going to need a tough, smart, lawyer!

I'm so relieved to hear that she's ok.

The title is wrong. She was not involved, SHE WAS HIT from behind. To state that someone is involved is to say the person was responsible. Whoever wrote the title should be corrected. The correct title should read, EDWARDS DAUGHTER GOT HIT BY A DRUNK DRIVER. There is a lot of drunk drivers still causing accidents and deaths. Police officers are often victims. How many times have you heard of a Police officer questioning one driver, just to get hit by another driver who was driving drunk? It happens more than people realise.

God was with her!

Why is America so infatuated with celebrity? Why the hell is this even news-worthy? Who cares? It has no bearing on the political arena at all.

America is full of moon rocks!

If I was hit by a drunk driver would it be plastered on the news?? NO, neither should this! If it were serious then maybe, but this is just political hype!!

You people are beginning to see the light of day that the MAINSCREAM media cobbled out for you. All networks fawn upon celebrity and you must go along for the ride. Crack your window for some fresh air and enjoy the ride is what the abc chaps would tell you.

Glad to hear Cate is alright.

On the other hand, Bush did not have millions just handed to him. He has had many jobs, even working in the oil fields as a young guy. But no one expects you people to acknowledge that.

Yes, Edwards wasn't born a rich man, he became one. Which shows the system isn't "rigged" as he tries to claim. If he can do it, anybody can. So tell Edwards to quit whining about how hard the poor have it. He worked hard, so can they.

Brian York, you're kidding, right.

Bush isn't fit to be President; he's C material.

More than that, Edwards is from a generation that didn't have to work 2 jobs to keep food on the table, and house payments made...Working hard is fine, but when your hard work is eaten away by high prices because the Government isn't doing their damn job, corporations have corrupted all politicians, the "system IS rigged."

Your version of reality is pretty brave when you don't have to face the regular Americans who struggle to pay basic bills, regardless of "working hard."

To see the weak dollar eat away at the value of your savings, while it's also being ravaged by gasoline, grocery, health costs..."WHINING"? MISMANAGEMENT!

You do NOT call the following fiscally conservative:
1)Cut taxes
2)Start war
3)Borrow Billions from China

WHINING? Whatevs.

Josh, you're kidding right? Edwards made it, so can everyone else who works for it. Nice try though. The poor in this country still have it better than the poor anywhere else.

Gotta run. Have a $400 to get. And some poor neighbors next door to my mansion to curse.

But I care for the poor. Really! I do. lol.

Posted by: Brian York | Jan 14, 2008 5:46:36 PM

P.S. I should have said I have to run and get a $400 haircut now.

By the way, any more OB-GYN's John Edwards and his ilk want to sue out of existence? Why do we need them around? After all, women don't need them, and John is the woman's candidate right?

You people kill me. Really, you do. Two jobs to put food on the table? Really? Most of this country is waaay overweight. Too funny.

it is unbelievable that many of you are trying to turn an article about a girl being in a car accident into an opportunity for political sniping.

Posted by: dave | Jan 14, 2008 6:46:20 PM

The comment that started the political sniping has apparently been removed. It was from someone with BDS who managed to bring Bush into the discussion, although how in the heck that is relevant is beyond me. But these psychos manage to blame Bush for everything.

Posted by: Brian York | Jan 14, 2008 7:16:31 PM

my comment is I'm a culinary union worker I'm supporting my union but my decision on my political vote is different. They can't assume the 60,000 members support Obama because not the 60,000 members are american citizens or democrats. They can't speak for us when they did not ask us.

Posted by: martha | Jan 14, 2008 8:58:23 PM

Regarding: title.
Maybe she was "involved" in the accident, because she could have been text messaging, slammed on her brakes at a stop sign and was then "hit" from behind. We don't know all the facts, so yes she was "hit" and she was "involved,".....until proven otherwise.

The Edwards have been through hell and back and yet they are so positive and come out shining. Hope and Pray that Cate is doing fine. Truly God was with her and is with the Edwards family. Regardless of the outcome of the elections - they are truly a family to be looked upon. They are there for each other in good and bad times...

I am soo happy she is alright. God bless her. And the Edwards family..greg
