Clinton Fights Back Against Spanish Radio Ad
January 17, 2008 6:17 PM
ABC News' Kate Snow and Eloise Harper Report: Sen. Hillary Clinton's campaign is fighting back against an ad that is all over the airwaves on Spanish radio in Nevada.
The ad, in Spanish, says in part: "Hillary Clinton does not respect our people. Hillary Clinton supporters went to court to prevent working people to vote this Saturday – that is an embarrassment."
It calls Senator Clinton "shameless" and says the fact that her allies were fighting to stop voters from being able to participate in caucus sites at casinos on the Las Vegas strip was "unforgiveable".
"Senator Obama is defending our right to vote. Senator Obama wants our votes. He respects our votes, our community, and our people," the ad concludes. "Senator Obama’s campaign slogan is "Sí Se Puede, Sí se puede." ("Yes We Can"). Vote for a president that respects us, and that respects our right to vote."
The ad is paid for by a pro-Obama labor group which represents 450,000 members across North America called UNITE HERE. The organization represents a largely immigrant workforce.
The radio advertisement is in heavy rotation on Spanish language radio, including on "Super Estrella" and "Tri-color" in Las Vegas, where an ad traffic manager says it is running twice an hour. A sister station in Reno, KSRN, is also running the spot.
"Every single sentence is a personal attack on Hillary Clinton," said Maria Echaveste of the Clinton campaign, speaking to reporters on a conference call this afternoon.
Echaveste called the ads "misleading" and "outrageous". "Particularly by saying in Spanish that Hillary Clinton does not respect Latinos. And that is just so far from the truth that it makes my mouth drop," she said.
"This kind of a personal attack, a misstatement of the record, is distracting," Echaveste said.
Dolores Huerta, a Clinton supporter who helped organize Hispanic farm workers alongside Cesar Chavez, said the ad was "a really desperate attack" on the part of Obama supporters.
Huerta said she’s been organizing Latinos for fifty years and has never met Senator Obama in person.
"Barack Obama has never had a relationship with the Latino community," she said.
"In all of my works, I’ve been in Chicago and throughout the country, I’ve never met Senator Obama," Huerta said. "People don’t know who he is. In fact they say ‘Como se llama?’ ‘What’s his name?’"
Huerta said it was "pathetic and sad and unfortunate that they have to stoop so low."

Enough already! What is everyone's problem? The way all of Clinton's and Obama's supporters are acting, we're heading for another 4 years by a lunatic who could care less about the Latinos in this country...why can't we all talk about the differences in Obama's and Clinton's policies? Why are you allowing yourselves to be used by the right wing reactionaries that are running this country into the ground? Finally, as far as Obama's church...please give me a break! All this garbage about his radical minister make me sick. Let's talk about Southern Baptist churches in the south. Let's talk about evangelical churches all over this country who preach hate against anyone and everyone who doesn't believe what they believe. Let's live religion out of this discussion! GROW UP.

And to all you who say Hillary has done nothing and cares little for laborers, minorities, children, etc!:
*Championed the Legal Immigrant Children's Health Improvement Act (provides states the option to provide federally funded Medicaid and SCHIP benefits to low-income legal immigrant children and pregnant women)
*Wrote the Access to Employment and English Acquisition Act to meet the growing demand for English language courses and other job skills.
*Strongly supports the DREAM Act, which provides a path to citizenship through military service or higher education for children who were brought to the U.S. by their parents.
*Offered an amendment to make family reunification the guiding principle of our immigration system.
*Original co-sponsor of the Employee Free Choice Act
*Co-sponsodered legislation to increase enforcement of Davis Bacon Act
*Introduced legislation to raise min wage to $9.50
*Has supported the Culinary Union in contract negotiations with hotel properties and "walked a day in the shoes" of an SEIU nurse
*Join Senator Reid to support Teach for American which brought nearly 200 great recent college grads to teach in Las Vegas Valley since 2004
etc....

I agree with you and the others that say it's about time Obama fought back! What did you Clinton supporters think would happen if she kept taking digs at the guy? So he does one thing and you all get upset? Grow up. I will take great delight in helping the Repubs defeat Hillary come November. I ask other Dems that hate Hillary to join me. I can't stand her hypocrisy or that of her supporters.

Wow - how any Latinos can be for the Clintons now is beyond me. CAN YOU NOT READ? They are disenfranchising us. That's disgusting. That's unfair. That's UNAMERICAN. Furthermore, they think Latinos are STUPID. They think that by saying guacamole we'll just fall in line despite the fact they've done NOTHING FOR LATINOS.
WAKE UP LATINOS or you will be left behind.
I will never, ever vote for Hillary Clinton.

What are you people blaming Obama for? His campaign didn't create it, pay for it, nor or they running it. Man, are you people even sure you should be voting?
Posted by: Thomas | Jan 17, 2008 9:47:32 PM
Nabin:
You forgot: Gave George Bush carte blanche to go to war. Lack of judgment. Enough said.
Obama in 08.

As much as I dislike Clinton, this is an unfair attack. I highly doubt Hillary is against Hispanics, but seriously, what did she expect someone might do when Bill was doing everything in his power to shut down the casino employees opportunity to vote?
Posted by: Dennis | Jan 17, 2008 9:52:48 PM
Hey HIllary supporters, there's nothing on that list that many other politicians join in on. Has she ever led anything that did serve herself?
And disenfranchising an entire union made up of mostly minority voters just because they are told not to vote for you is the epitome of hyprocrisy.
I am done with the Clintons forever!
Posted by: You are wrong | Jan 17, 2008 9:54:14 PM
Babydoll's absolutely right, you forgot about her vote for Iraq, where many, many LATINOS are dying. And I have yet to here an apology or any regret for that decision. Is that leadership?
Posted by: Lori | Jan 17, 2008 9:56:45 PM
If Obama isn't the future, then the Clintons are still ancient history. So be it. I'm not pro-Obama, but I am really not for Hillary or any Bush or Clinton for that matter. I'm so done with Clintons and Bushes. Only a masochist would want to keep that streak alive.

Where is the Obama record in helping Latinos? What he has done for the huge Latino community in Chicago? NOTHING! Does he really marched for then, supported his issues in Illinois? NO, never! So for him to suddenly start saying he is with the Latino community or representing the latinos is a BIG LIE. Latinos in Nevada or elsewhere should not be listening to him. Where is his record? Enough of manipulation from that fake campaign that want to portrait his candidate as the one who knows everything and the one whos records is best in everything. I don't buy it. I am not stupid.

What the BLEEP has Obama done for hispanics...????
Bill and Hillary have a record of real life accomplishments that have helped hispanics for years.
Again...Barack "No Substance/All Talk" Obama...is suckering people in and making backroom deals with lobbyists, etc.
Posted by: Michael | Jan 17, 2008 10:04:26 PM
What history?
"Bill and Hillary have a record of real life accomplishments that have helped hispanics for years."
Empty words and accomplishments is all I see and now they don't even want Latinos to vote.
Barack Obama by the way, was a community organizer in Chicago and has walked the picket with Latinos many times. Furthermore, the Latinos in Chicago voted for him so he's obviously doing something write.
You're being willfully ignorant if you say Obama's done nothing for Latinos. I'm so sick of this. Read and think for yourselves.
Posted by: Anon | Jan 17, 2008 10:11:14 PM
I live in Chicago and I don't recall ever seen or hearing Obama doing anything from the Latino community here. For those writing here and saying he has help us in anyway, that's a lie and they know it.
Posted by: Laura_Chicago | Jan 17, 2008 10:25:06 PM
This is disturbing. He is sinking this country and dividing our party faster than you can say Sí Se Puede. I guess his Si Se Puede means yes we can destroy this country and his Hope is I hope we can draw racial lines and divide the nation. And change? Yes, it will be the first time a person is trying to win the White House on Affirmative Action.
Obama is the nastiest piece of work I've seen in my 26 years. First he calls the Clinton family racists now he says they don't support the Latinos. Is he on drugs? Nevermind.

Clinton is a disgrace to American politics, She sided with republicans in the Congress to pass legislations to build a wall and then she goes on TV to deny it. Well, we have your voting record to prove it, Mrs. Clinton. It's old news that Clinton does not respect my people, she only respects power. Latinos, don't vote for this woman.

Let's see, in 2000 elected to President was a chanting Uniter, Changer and wanting to give Hope to America, and inside that suit shouting it was a dictator who put lives in harms way over lies, but because it is a Republican controlled Washington, no impeachment, yet a man who lies about an affair, like 100% of those caught in one will do and most on here would do or have done, and was not Impeached because the Senate couldn't impeach him as the foundation wasn't there, Congress did but congress is a joke!
And here we are 8 years later and still listening to an empty suit who lied to his voters when running for US Senate stating he would not run for President but would serve his full term in the Senate!
It is amazing how people forget that the most major reforms in modern history came by the Clinton Whitehouse 90's and turned around a destroyed America thanks to 12 years of Republican rule! And the only thing the Republicans could do is attack personal credibility in destroying the reality of change that happened to tarnish all the good done and that took place even while they were on their witch hunt!
So keep feeding on the Republicans bait and listen even to their rhetoric of wanting Clinton to go against, when has any political party exposed their choice as who they'd prefer to go against in history? Ahhh but pie in the sky believers will always be and will be disenfrachised once again and then we will have to suffer at the hands of the Republicans once again! Even Oprah can't fix this one if it happens, after all she doesn't pay for the things she gives away, just makes it seem like she does......fools!

Obama stands for change alright, he wants to change the money in your wallet into his. This man is accoustomed to wealth and will stop at nothing to make himself richer at your expense. Buyer Beware.

I love the way Obama supporters blame Clinton for the "TEACHERS UNION" lawsuit, then turn around and forgive Obama for the "CULINARY WORKERS" nasty campaign ad.
The Clinton's have actually done more WORK (not just speaches) on human rights for blacks and hispanics than any other politician in the presidential race. These so-called politics of "hope" are disgusting.
Hillary 08' !!!!!!!!!!!!!
