Clinton Surrogate Makes Veiled Reference to Obama's Drug Use

January 13, 2008 2:08 PM

ABC News' Eloise Harper reports: Speaking in Columbia, S.C., BET founder Bob Johnson was introducing Clinton and made a veiled swipe at Barack Obama's past drug use. The last surrogate to talk about Obama and drugs, former Clinton New Hampshire campaign co-chair Bill Shaheen, was removed from the campaign after doing so.

Here is what Johnson said today:

"I am frankly insulted that the Obama campaign would imply that we are so stupid that we would think Hillary and Bill Clinton who have been deeply and emotionally involved in black issues when Barack Obama was doing something in the neighborhood that I won't say what he was doing but he said it in his book."

When Clinton spokesman Jay Carson was asked about Johnson's comments, he denied they referred to Obama's admitted drug use. "That's not what he was talking about," he said.

Carson speculated that Johnson may have been referring to Obama's time spent as a community organizer.

He followed up by saying that Clinton has "made (it) cystal clear to supporters and staff alike that no one should engage in negative personal campaigning."

Thank You Mr. Johnson. Your comments are so stupid, and it should raise the eyebrows of people. You maybe just have really sunk things for Mrs. Clinton.

Obama's admission of high-school drug use is a part of his book "Dreams from My Father" in which he talks of his coming of age as a bi-racial man. It's a single line and an off-handed reference that is meant to convey the alienation and boredom of his last two years of high school.

President Bush apparently did cocaine and had a drinking problem well into his privileged post-college life. Somehow his "born again" status absolved him of any moral outrage.

Obama spent his post-college years organizing low-income residents in South Chicago. As the first African-American president of the Harvard Law Review, he could have made millions in corporate America, just like the opportunistic Bob Johnson (CEO of BET) and Hillary Clinton (former Wal-Mart board member and corporate lawyer).

Instead Obama went to work in the inner city as a civil rights lawyer.

Blow schmo.

Mr. Johnson. you are just like the clintons. I'm sure now the Mr. Clyburn will endorse Mr. Obama because your comments were another tatic. It's sad and I hope you get alot of negative press for it.

Having a well educated capable black male as president does not serve the interest of Bob Johnson. He made his fortune out of scrap and the Clinton's know that.
They will try to get has been minority people with them who believe the world most misleading belief ever that minority people can only assist white people.

for ths people of the past we can tell them Race does not exist. This is pure invention. This is an economical invention. if you believe in race you are probably under the level of a dog they dont react to "what kind of name do you have ?" capable people are just capable people and they are these people who can face their past. and say yes I 've done it i'm not a saint but I can say I made mistakes and I learn from them.
I do prefer voting for people who did mistakes and admit them than people who try to hide them. I prefer to vote for people who wants to create a livable future than those who wnats to live by discrimation and polarization. When people try to attack you on a personal level with things of the past you admited. They do belong to the past. They have nothing to offer. What is more important is what kind of personally do you have what are your principles and if you have a strong leadership. Then you hire the right people to do the job and you motivate them to make the plan. People believe in God but I dont know if they understand the bible. With faith you can change the outcome. Of you give faith to people then comes the miracle. Words have a real importance and then if you have the right leadership you can choose the right people and you have a team. You are the coach or the captain and you have the team.
Most people know what they have to do but they are not dumb.. but they need to be motivated and you give them some tools they eventually lack . Tell them the truth people are not dumb and can judge or they have at least the right to judge by themselves. Confidence by allowing a Health care system :
people will take better risk if they know there is a real back office. Give people tools : Education. make them participate to their future. asked anyone if he has any good idea. Know you neightbours because you not alone on earth. This does not need to have unlimited years of experience to make it happen. But you have to hire and inspire the right people wherever they come from.

In the bipartisan battle of "experience" vs. "change," one thing seems clear: There is no shortage of experience in Washington. If Washington experience came by the dozen, it would be a dime a dozen. Washington experience is rarely what brings change, but is all too often precisely what prevents it. Washington experience fills our hearts and minds not with courage or hope but with fear. Washington experience does not say "Yes We Can" but "No We Can't." Washington experience is what has led us into the foreign and domestic mess we're in today. What we are short of in Washington is not experience but fresh ideas and unifying vision. Put a president with these in the White House, and all that Washington experience can be put to work taking America in a new direction. This is why I support Barack Obama for president.

Awesome. Do it again, Clinton camp. Barack used drugs. OOOOOOH! I'm so scared! God forbid he was honest about it. Is this going to make him "vulnerable to the right wing attacks"?

It's comical how childish this stuff is. Clintons: Please go away. You had your turn, I appreciate the good things you did. I don't need to see it again. I'm ready for true change, not more divisive politics.

Let's remember this is not the first time an operative of the Clinton War Machine made a personal attack on Obama of this nature (see http://www.cnn.com/2007/POLITICS/12/13/clinton.obama/). With the Clintons, it always seems to be calculated, even with their genius of damage control. Let us end the Bush/Clinton era of inane politics once and for all!

Listen folks, this what its all about. Its crunch time its about winning the presidency right? What ever it takes to get into the white house that's what she will do. Hillary Clinton is a winner and nothing is going to stop her. When it comes down to you or her its going to be her. And I'm not saying there's anything wrong with that people have to decide if that's the type of person we want in the oval office. I just wish people would see her for who and what she is. This is the type of thing I have always told people about democrats especially the Clintons. They WILL SAY ANYTHING to get elected!! What does Martin Luther King have to with 2008!!??

Posted by: Mace Windu | Jan 13, 2008 7:00:02 PM

I can't believe the Clinton's would go this low to stay in power - Ironically enough - I thought she would win anyway, without the personal hits. I am a democrat, an African American and I voted for Clinton twice - he was the best choice at the time - this time however, even prior to the primaries - I had reservations about putting them back in office, because in effect, that is what we would be doing.
The Washington Machine would just keep on churning - instead we would be the ones winning - if we want everyone to win, after Obama loses and I believe he will (I will vote for him) cast your vote for change - no more Clintons and no more Bushes - throw the bums out - go McCain - Go Huck -

Mace - good points!

If you want to know who the Clinton's are and what type of tactics they're employing, look at Bob Johnson's comment and explanation.

He was with Senator Clinton and bringing up stuff from Barack's past that he has made plain to anyone who's read his book in hopes of eroding his support.

FACTS
1. Neither Barack, nor ANY MEMBER OF HIS CAMPAIGN has said anything about HRC's MLK/LBJ comment. Those comments came from other parties not associated with his campaign.

2. It didn't stop Clinton from saying that it came from his campaign.

3. Nobody in their right mind would think that Bob was referring to anything other than Barack's 'youthful indiscretions'. SERIOUSLY, how could his community organizing and all the other things he took on in his years leading up to the Illinois Senate be negatively contrasted to what the Clinton's were doing in the 90's. He's lying about that and these dirty tendencies are consistent thing in the Clinton's camp.

You didn't see this kind of stuff coming out of any other Democratic campaign when everybody else was in it. And you don't see it coming out of Barack's or Edward's campaign.

I wish these jerks would just go away.

Justin Michael says:

I would be fired if I used drug at work. Why Obama is an exception? I don't think any body who use drug should be elected to be in the school or community board.

My reply:

Yes, you'd get fired if you were using drugs at work, or if you failed a drug test, but does that mean that if you EVER had experimented with drugs, no matter how long ago, you'd be unemployable? That's absurd.

No one who USES illegal drugs should be elected, but if you say that no one who has EVER USED drugs should be elected, then you would be against the current Bush's presidency, the Clintons (don't forget that Hillary voted for a federally funded WOODSTOCK museum) and countless others. Not to mention how many Americans are on presciption drugs for imaginary ailments, but that's a whole different post. This drug issue is another non-story to distract us from the real issues. For shame.

My recollection of the Clinton years are of infighting, perpetual scandal and bitter political division. Even as the Clinton term ended they loaded up a truck with valuable White House furniture (and were caught). Now they return in full force with insinuations and race profiling once again dividing the Democrats. They would happily sacrifice our country to get their power back.

Everyone has missed the most important question. Did Hillary cry for Obama?

Posted by: Jayne | Jan 13, 2008 8:17:07 PM

Last Monday on CNN, Hillary's Biographer said " this election for Clintons it's about themselves, not for the country"

How true! They will do any thing to get the nomination, even loosing their integrity.

For Johnson, I don't know if he is following the nomination that close. Obama never said any thing about her comments of Dr. MLK. If Johnson had a respect of Dr. MLK, he should have asked her to appolegize. It shows you how arrogant this Johnson is.

These Clinton/Bush dynasty must have to finish for America and the world to live in peace and harmony. I would vote again for any Republican than these sick and dirty Clintons. I don't want even to see them in any TV station, let alone to torture us for the next four years.

Go Clintons away from our life

Posted by: Paul | Jan 13, 2008 8:25:08 PM

Desperate people do desperate things. Its clear the Clintons feel threatened. I do not think they are racist, but I am disturbed to see how the tone of their campaign has become so divisive, and they blame it on everybody else. I wish this whole thing would cease, I don't see any good coming out of this. I pray this race issue goes away quickly for all of our sakes!

This is totally out of range.

I am living in Canada. Because Obama's great speech, which have touched me into tears, I followed US Selection since then. However I was totally dispointed by all the tricks that Hillary has been used during the selection.

To be honest, it's disgraceful to have her as a presidence candidate. She has such low class. She has played all the political tricks for her sakes.

That's a shame. Please please please American People, open your eyes and mind to choose a right president for your country. DO NOT Choose Hillary.

I wish I can vote in US. Then I will vote for Obama for sure. He is the one who can bring the country together and bring the peace to the world. American people will be so pround to tell the world again:" I am from GREAT United States of America".

God bless you! God bless Obama!

This is response to Bob Johnson who came out to attack Obama for something that he did in the past, well my bible tells me that we are "all" sinners, there are "none good, no not one", he are Hillary can say anything about Obama. Because if we are going to judge on that basis then no would be qualified. We need to get back to the issues, and stop showing the ignorance that I'm seeing trying to stop a positive movement for our Country. God chooses his leaders for the job he wants them to do. Get over it, you can't fight against God. You can't stop what God has ordained to be. He's interested in our biases, but what is right for the whole world. People here only see white and black. Americans are so far behind when its comes truth. No wonder why we can't move forward because we won't let go of the past. In closing I would say to all, Let him that is without sin cast the first stone at Obama.

Robert Johnson has no right to comment on how any person, black or white, has failed to help the black community, as he is responsible for the creation of Black Entertainment Television, which was showing nothing but misogynistic, booty-shaking garbage and malt liquor ads even before he sold it to Viacom. That's the face he felt Black America should show the world. The Clintons might want to think twice before employing this dummy as a shill; one guy doing a couple of lines of blow is nothing compared to the damage Bob Johnson has done to Black Americans and their image, and he got good and rich while doing it, too.

barack obama is feeding on the fuel of the failure of the bush administration. his/supporters' unwarranted and over the edge reaction stems from pure political motive. no surprise that he would eventually have to play the race card
