Coffee Break on a 36-Hour Marathon
January 02, 2008 12:17 PM
ABC News' Raelyn Johnson Reports: Having reached his 20th hour of campaigning during a 36-hour marathon leading up to the Iowa caucuses, John Edwards boarded the media bus to bring a weary press corp hot coffee.
After campaigning through the night, Edwards admitted that he didn't sleep much. Either did the press corps.
When asked if he was resorting back to 2004 where he constantly drank diet coke to stay energized he asserted, "No diet cokes, I'm still sticking with sprite, all though right now I could definitely use a diet coke. I wish I drank coffee."
The press corps offered a Red Bull.
"Red bull, that stuff's nasty"
But with 12 hours left, Edwards said he would have no problems campaigning strong through the rest of the day.
"We're going to make it," before pointing at this reporter and adding, "No let me rephrase that. I'm going to make it, I doubt if she's going to make it."
"What are those bags under eyes...it"s all my fault huh?" said Edwards.
Before leaving the bus, Edwards told reporters he was amazed to see his supporters rally for him in the middle of the night.
Asked if he regretted not taking more questions, he joked, "No, I think they probably want to go back to bed."
(Note: When the senator left the bus, one reporter said I should look for a trial lawyer--considering the comment about the bags under my eyes.)
