Do As I Say, Not as I Drive

ABC News' John Berman Reports: Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney calls himself a Michigander. He was born here. His father was governor. He says that, for him, Michigan's economic woes are personal.

Moreover, he says he takes great pride in Michigan's auto industry, which he says he is uniquely suited to help save.

"What a thrill it is to come back to Michigan, particularly in winter where the skies are cloudy all day, and trees are just the right height, you know, almost all the cars you see are American made, like they ought to be."

Being surrounded by American made cars might be a welcome change ... from his own garage.

Romney drives a Mustang now, but the Boston Herald reported records show Romney owned a 1985 BMW and a 1996 Saab Turbo 9000.

The Herald quoted a GOP insider saying Romney treated the classic BMW -- his favorite -- "like his baby."

No word if the trees in his yard are the wrong height.

UPDATE: Since the posting of the story above, the Romney campaign has provided a further list of the cars he has owned (in addition to the BMW):

  • 2005 Ford Mustang GT
  • 2002 Chevy Silverado truck
  • 2005 Cadillac SRX crossover SUV
  • 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee
  • Buick Skylark
  • Chevrolet Caprice Classic
  • Chevrolet Caprice Classic station wagon (complete with the wood paneling).
  • Dodge Durango
  • Dodge Ram
  • And a 1962 Rambler that was a gift from his sons.

Also, some semantic experts point out GM bought SAAB some year ago.  Unclear whether that still makes it a foreign car or not.

I have no mercy for the American Auto companys,They were greedy all around. The execs the unions and the Dem controlled Govt of Michigan. Then to top it all off the American auto companys were way behind in knowing what the Americans Wanted in a car.Thats a case of not looking at the trends.Jap cars sales went up way before the gas hikes Detroit was too busy spending all their wealth. Not in re-tooling and re-focusing their products. The Liberal Unions in this country we have to thank for America loosing its Mfg to china. And the funny thing is they keep voting the Dems back in. Yep,How stupid people can be to keep walking into the same wall over and over.Dems now support taxation without representation.Lets read about Obamas dirt,Oh yea - He has plenty.

I always loved Fords, but now I like Volkswagens.

This just proves Gov. Mitt Romney is just like us. We drive what we want and like. Not what someone else wants us to drive. Everyone wants a good deal. Soon our cars will be made in China.

There are foreign owned US assembly plants in the US that employ US workers. So the name of the manufacture does not necessarily indicate that they are displacing American jobs. We should still be concerned about boat loads of mostly assembled vehicles being imported. The problems with government oversight and operational efficiencies need to be fixed. Romney can lead the efforts to do that.

Ron Paul is the only honest candidate in either party...he exposes the others and the globalist media for what they really are....

Just add this to his list of lies, flip-flopping, two-faced arrogance. First there was the "pro-choice/pro-life" flip. Then there was the fact he had illegal aliens working for him on three separate occasions (groundskeepers, and housekeeper), and despite saying that he gave the state police in Massachusetts the right to arrest undocumented workers - he didn't have his own workers arrested. Now this...the list goes on.

If this is the most important thing you have to talk about Romney, damn, then the media really forgot about what is most important, ISSUES. I don't want a president who's time in the hospital (McCain) will prevent him from doing his job, a guy who will preach to us because we're no evangelical, etc, etc. I like Romney because he's the most prepared individual running for president. I want no lawyers, actors, or prisoners of war (they're not heros BTW), I want the best qualified individual to be president, and Romney is the ONLY guy that fits the bill.

There are some guys who would hate Romney if he was driving around in a 57 Chevy. They would say the diamond tuck was made with foreign thread. I think Romney needs to hand out flip flops at all his campaign stops with two names printed on them. Huckabee on the one to the LEFT and McCain. McCain, of course would have to be on the Left one too...might as well they have been seen holding hands..

oh or maybe that was SHAKING hands... after working out their unholy alliance.

Romney's car choices are way better than McCain who ignores the will of the American people by trying to sneak in amnesty for 12 million illegals.

So you are saying that he tried a foreign car and came back to an American made auto? This story is a bit of a stretch, no? What I really want to know is if he uses American products in his hair. If he uses a French shampoo, then forget it! I can't vote for a man whose hair smells French! :)

Mitt Romney can drive whatever he dang well pleases! There is no one prepared and intelligent as Romney, and his record speaks for itself. Is this the best hit job you've got left?

You ran the dog thing, and the Mormon thing, and the gun thing...but none of that changes the fact that he is the only one who knows how to run a damn business!

Most parts for new cars are made overseas already and then assembled in the US because its more "cost effective". While the US may always perfect assembly processes for dummies to build highly complex equipment - eventually the Chinese, Indians, and Japanese can overtake us on that too. Eventually the manufacturer of automobiles and any manual labor intensive process will totally move to 3rd world countries because of cheap labor. Business people want to make the biggest profit and don't really care about the "averge guy" in the US. While some of it can be blamed on our politicians "Free Trade" policies, it is basically the Business Community that is selling out the US for profits to line their own pockets (look at the CEO of Countrywide). Its called glutonus greed, its addictive and now a epidemic in the Business Industry.

Why are we worried about American made vs. foreign? The real issue is that although technology has progressed, we still have the same standard gas mileage (27.5 I believe) as we did 15 years ago! We should stop focusing on packing cars with more add-ons and improve on gas mileage and less dependency on foreign oil. Also, by utilizing the technology we have for building alternative fuel vehicles, we can not only become a dependant country, but we will also set a precedent for environmental health and awareness. Isn't that the real issue? Last I checked, correct me if I"m wrong, we only have one planet that can support human life-this is it! We need to ensure we have a home for the future. We have a wealth of talented scientists here in America and we should rely on them and their minds, not capitalism, to help us through our crisis. Having a brain is what got us here and it will get us further if we allow the intelligent people we have to guide politicians in their decisions.
