Edwards Low Key in South Carolina
January 10, 2008 8:01 PM
ABC News' Raelyn Johnson Reports; It was a low key day on the campaign trail for former Sen. John Edwards. After a very rigorous schedule in Iowa and New Hampshire, Edwards held just a single event in Charleston - visiting a food bank.
While South Carolina was buzzing with Edwards' 2004 runningmate Sen. John Kerry endorsing Sen. Barack Obama - Edwards himself was as low key as the day.
"I heard months ago that this is what he was gonna do," said Edwards about Kerry’s decision to side with Obama. "I have great respect for Sen. Kerry. These are decisions individuals have to make for themselves. And my view of him, my very high opinion of him, hasn't changed, I still have an enormously high opinion of John Kerry, he's a good man
Edwards brought nearly 100 volunteers to the Lowcountry food bank to prepare food packages for local residents. He packed dry goods into boxes and cleaned cans, while touring the facility.
The volunteers who joined Edwards were brought in as part of One Corp, the service arm of the campaign. Fifteen members come to the Lowcountry food bank weekly.
"Not all of them were Edwards supporters when they started, some of them were undecided voters," says Teresa Wells, the South Carolina communications director for the campaign. "I know some of the campaigns have been working on reaching out to voters via hair salons, barber shops—that’s casting a much larger net. We’re not sure how many voters you actually get from that. This is something to get people who are already social conscious and involve them directly in the campaign.
Sen. Obama held a rally in Charleston earlier in the day to welcome Kerry’s endorsement. Edwards was asked which campaign event was more significant—his visiting a food bank or Obama’s rally.
"Far be it for me to be critical of somebody who has a political rally because I've been to lots of them myself. I think this is more important," said Edwards. "I think that's politics and I think this is real life. I think that for myself, not just for - again, I've been to plenty of pep rallies myself."
Edwards will campaign in South Carolina for the next three days, with a "Bring it Home" bus tour.

John Edwards is at home thinking up new deception for the public much of the day. Maybe this time he'll tell us he alone is in the race, and Obama and Hillary are out.
He's been out because he's been misleading, perhaps just WAY too presumptuous. He runs against lobbyists, yet it's through lobbyists he's even able to run. He's painting us a fictitious picture, like Obama is.

A presidential candidate criticizing another presidential candidate for having a campaign rally. Slow news day?

Corporate interests fear John Edwards because they know he represents real change. The GOP is afraid of John Edwards. The media is afraid of him, so they rarely cover his campaign. Hillary and Obama steal his ideas and never answer his questions. Hillary looks out for the less fortunate by sitting on the boards of Wal-Mart and other large corporations. Obama represents hope and not much else. A vote for Hillary or Obama is a vote for the GOP.

I agree with the previous poster. Sen. Clinton is just another Washington elitist and Sen. Obama is all talk. John Edwards is the candidate that I believe can do the most good with our country. At least we know that his heart is in the right place, having a food drive as opposed to a pep rally.

John Edwards would be Corporate America's worst nightmare and the vast majority of American's best dream that could come true!! He would govern for the common good of all Americans and not just for the top 5% and that includes many of you Republicans - Eighty percent of Republicans are just Democrats who don't know what is going on!
