Edwards Says His Wife Is Healthy
January 04, 2008 8:24 PM
ABC News' Raelyn Johnson Reports: John Edwards was forced to update voters on his wife's health during a town hall in Portsmouth, N.H.
"I just want to hear and people need to hear -- because there are rumors going around Elizabeth isn't healthy. Please let us know," said a voter, who said she was going to support the former senator.
"Elizabeth's great I have to tell you--and that's the truth," said Edwards.
In March, Elizabeth Edwards announced that her cancer had returned, only this time it was incurable.
Many questioned Edwards' decision to continue with the campaign, but the couple have made it clear that they felt Edwards' voice needed to be heard in this election.
Elizabeth has spent the last few weeks campaiging non-stop for her husband, and just wrapped up a 36-hour tour of Iowa in a push to the caucuses. "We monitor her health closely but all the information we get is extremely positive and good."
"You tell anybody that you're on the phone with and whoever is circulating those rumors they're false, and Elizabeth is doing great, feels great and she's healthy."

I don't understand. Mrs. Edwards' incurable cancer is back, but she's healthy and able to campaign for 36 hours straight? How is this possible?

KL -- to answer your question. It's very possible. I am a 43 y/o M.D Heart Physician and breast cancer survivor. I learned that with the stress cancer causes, it is important that you take care of yourself, the person, and not just your cancer. Some people may want to become more "in tune" with themselves or participate in activities that take their mind off their disease. Do what you need to do. Physical activities such as walking, dance, and yoga can improve your sense of well-being and make you more aware of your body. Taking on a new and challenging activity can provide a sense of accomplishment, as well as help reduce stress.
Mrs Edwards has all the resources need it, a loving family and a great network of friends in addition to our prayers and best wishes, so I am sure she will do just fine. I am also sure she is monitored well and she is an intelligent woman that will follow her Doctors advise. We should admire her remarkable courage and wish her the best every single day.
Thank you.

I'm so glad to see that Elizabeth is thus far remaining healthy. I certainly am hopeful each time I see her that she seems well, although we all know she's terminally ill. I worried when we didn't see her at the Jefferson Jackson Dinner here in Iowa. Even tho I SOUNDLY support Senator Obama I adore Elizabeth! I wish SHE were the politician, tho of course her illness would preclude that.

Is it possible to have stage 4 breast cancer and still be healthy? Yes! I have a friend who was diagnosed with metastases to her bones (just like Mrs. Edwards), but has been healthy with this stage 4 diagnosis for 22 years. 22 years!!! You would not know if from looking at her---she looks terrific and is still a ball of fire---much energy, much humor, much love of life. And may I add, I personally have stage 4 disease (metastasized to my lungs); I had surgery, chemo, and radiation, and have been completely healthy for the past 6 years. You would not know from looking at me that I have a terminal illness---I hike, I travel, I just started a new fulltime job I love, I volunteer at a free clinic, I raise my family, I garden, I take care of my 90-year-old mother. Am I in denial? No. I am likely to die of this disease one day. But, like Mrs. Edwards, my friend and I decided not to just STOP living to wait to die.

I met Elizabeth Edward last Thursday in Iowa during the 36 hour blitz. She was warm, friendly and beautiful. What an inspiration to women!
