Edwards: "What Happens In Vegas Stays In Vegas"

Share

January 19, 2008 9:05 PM

ABC News' Raelyn Johnson reports: Democratic presidential hopeful John Edwards has summed up a disappointing performance in the Nevada caucuses, saying, "This is one of those times that I hope the old saying, 'what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas,' turns out to be true. We'll see what happens."

The former No. Carolina senator finished a distant third behind Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y., and Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., garnering only 4 percent of the vote. He did not pick up any delegates.

"I think the other candidates spent enormous amounts of money, and we didn't.  It was a caucus process ... they were there for a long time organizing," said Edwards, in Greenville, S.C.

Yet, despite having failed to win a state, Edwards vowed that he would push forward.

"We've now had three states vote out of 50. We've got 47 more to go.  And this cause that I'm engaged in has not gone away, and it has not changed."

When pressed by reporters on his third place finish this evening, Edwards lamented, "I am not finished with this fight. I am dead in it."

Shortly after the results were in, Edwards placed calls to both Clinton and Obama on their victories.

Go John Go! Keep up the message!

Edwards, Clinton and Obama are all terrible. All three want our national security and the war on terror to go on the back burner. Now is the time to step things up. We need to tell terrorists we will NOT tolerate them. We do not need to embolden them by "backing out of iraq" as hillary and obama want to do. If we do this I guarantee Suitcase nukes will be next amd then it will make 9/11 look like nothing in comparison. We need another president like george bush who will keep our national security in check.

I hope John stays in. The media basically is ignoring him but he is changing the message even from the front runners. John connects with people and fights for the populas. You now hear both Hillary and Barack taking his msg and running with it.

If you figure the amount of dollars and the lack of being able to attrack the media who are SO focused on the Barack vs Hillary coverage - John is holding his own.

He has my vote. I hope he stays in a long time and I know it is a long shot right now - but I hope he wins.

It's pretty telling how heavily invested in keeping Edwards message away from the people the mainstream media are. What's surprising to me is how sites like Huffington Post and Daily Kos are carrying the corporate water too. I guess Arriana and Markos like those Sunday talking head and News Weekly paychecks they get. Let's not forget to follow the piles of money here folks and not the horse race. You know what you get when you follow a horse race? Piles of a different material all together.

As Bill Moyers once said, "The news is what they DON'T want you to know. Everything else is just publicity."

Edwards/Obama has a nice ring to it.

Nice to see good comments on John. He's the only hope to get us out this mess. It is sad Hillary and Obama are starting to echo him...no original thoughts of their own? Considering the lack of coverage by the media I think Edwards is doing well. Hmmm, just what is the media afraid of?

I have met John Edwards, and I suppose that puts me in a slightly "biased" position. The fact that he was in Tucson and accessible for the general public -- of which I am certainly a "member" -- really impressed me. As an Arizona voter, my turn to cast a vote is coming up. I intend to vote for Senator Edwards on February 5th. In fact, I feel honored to do so! He has the message, if people would only listen and the media would become more neutral in this presidential preference selection process!

Let's be really honest about how John is doing.

John Edwards is a southern white male.

Iowa - Rural white state. He beat Clinton. Obama did amazing, but he was at his height of media frenzy at that point. People thought he was the second coming in Iowa. Still, John did amazing.

New Hampshire - New England white state. He got 17%. New England is Clinton land. Obama did amazing still riding his hype from Iowa, but he didn't win.

Nevada - Latin American and Woman gave Hillary the win again. Obama did amazing. Edwards did poorly. However, 4% is not what it seems. It was a caucus state, so, if you don't have 15% in a district, you don't count. He did what was expected there. If it had been a primary vote... would have been 14-15%.

Now... this may sound like excuses to those who don't care about the facts and just want to say that John is losing. But why does John stay in the race? He isn't stupid.

Bill Clinton lost the first 5 states when he ran? He stayed in to Feb 5th and won the nomination.

Unlike the narrative that the Media want to create... John didn't drop from 30 to 17 to 4 in the first 3 states. Each state was very different. John did the best in the face of Obama and Hillary when he was in a state that he could win. He didn't have a shot in NH or NV of winning or even doing that well.

John is a southern white male. He will do well in rural white states and in other states do well, as he has, with the white voter.

I know it sounds unfair, but it's the same exact thing for both Hillary and Obama.

Hillary has women.

Obama has youth.

Both are splitting the minority voters.

Edwards, up against these two, is going to do well where southern white males ussually do well.

That is how much of the country???

Yeah, that's right. That would be the majority of the people in the country who have yet to vote.

That is why John is staying in the race to the end. He has only gotten to run in one single state that he was ever going to do well in.

Why would he drop out before those states vote?

Go ahead News Media. Paint the false picture that John has no chance to win. It's not the truth.

And you know... while Obama and Hillary continue to eat each other alive as they are. The hype of both of them that could have drawn John's voters over has burst and is fizzling.

John knows that the race is for 50 states. Not 3.

So do all of the people who vote in those other 47 states.

Thank you very much.

Edwards is an ambulance chaser.

Clinton is a political machine which craves power above all else.

Obama has the judgment and temperment the office demand.

Posted by: William | Jan 20, 2008 10:56:58 PM

I totally agree with Anton. Edwards isn't out of it by any stretch. He's not even that far behind in the overall delegate count. He finished 2nd in Iowa and the media acted like he wasn't even there. Don't let the conversation continue to be controlled by the media! Clinton and Obama have little chance in the general election, they're just what the republicans want. Edwards is the real deal, that's why he's sticking around.

The Next President of the USA needs to be the best man/woman and that has nothing to do with skin. They need to lead our country based on integrity & morals. They must posses the very best ideals. They must have one agenda, one that is not self serving but serving of all mankind.

In our choices in the democratic party that we have to choose from today. There is only one clear choice based on what this country needs at this time. I believe that to be John Edwards. Not because he's white or a man; but because he leads by example. He exemplifies the leadership skills, morals and has the integrity that this country sorely lacks today.

Democrats woud have to be one of the most self deluded, short sighted groups of people ever amassed.

If you look at Obama's polling numbers with southern whites,it's like watching a storm building. Only a fool would believe that in the general election that phenomina will stop at the Mason-Dixon line. Honeymoons never last forever.

And Hillary? Please. Contrary to the current female love fest within the Democraic Party, aside from George W. Bush, she's by far the most polarizing and disliked person in America today. If Democrats want to immediately fire up the Republicans and vastly improve the GOP's general election voter turnout, there is no more sure way to do that than to make Hillary Clinton their nominee. Republicans will come to the polls with her head on a stick.

It's disheartening, but those are the realities. If Democrats want to win in November, they need to nominate a white male again, and that's John Edwards.
November 6th is too late to realize that. In fact, February 6th is too.

I am voting for John Edwards on February 5th.

John Edwards is a bozo. He has no shame.

He talks of being for the little people & lives in 26,000 sq ft home.

If Edweirds is the answer, it must a stupid question.(not that billiary or osama are the answers either)

The advantage of a drawn-out primary should be that we can spend more time debating candidates' positions... but all the chat is about who can win... looks like the Bush/Rove legacy is still alive and that Hillary and Barack learned from it- keep it to sound-bites and photo ops and pour that money on. Both are great politicians, but as far as I can tell John Edwards is the only one who was talking about substantive issues from the beginning (equality and empowerment), and the only one who will have the backbone to deal with all that'll be on the the next president's plate and not try to appease either all their accumulated lobbyists (Clinton)or get everyone to keep liking him (Obama) - stop reading the polls!!!

edwards can live in a home he earned whatever the size, the point is, he is not a snob about it. if you take time to listen, he really treats everyone with equal respect. don't condemn him because he had the opportunity to get ahead, he could be off on some island with his wife and kids, but instead, he fights for us. give him a break!
