Glitterati Get Out the S.C. Vote for Obama
January 23, 2008 7:35 AM
ABC News' Sunlen Miller Reports: "Thank god for all the beautiful women," Grammy award-winning singer Usher said when he took the stage at a rally for Barack Obama.
His first point may not have been on part of the campaign's platform, but he quickly got back to the reason he came: to get out the youth vote in South Carolina for Barack Obama.
Usher said that Barack Obama, his choice for president, represents the possibility of Dr. Martin Luther King's dream, "he is the water that grows that seed that was planted."
Usher was joined on stage with two other celebrities, actors, Chris Tucker, who said he was a fan of Barack Obama even before he was a Senator, and Kerry Washington who said she talked her mother out of voting for "somebody else."
Obama took the stage as eighteen year old girls still swooned, with tears rolling down their faces for Usher, "I'm gonna wait till the, the craziness stops, I'm gonna wait till they get out of here. They might cause a riot," he said of his star studded supporters as they exited.
"Given the fact that there was so many civil rights activists that fought for the ability for us to have a voice, I will consider it negligent, I would consider it irresponsible, I would consider it taken for granted if you don’t take that opportunity to vote, because you can make a difference," Obama told the South Carolina Sate University crowd. Referencing King's 'I Have a Dream' speech, Obama said "Now he didn't live to see that dream but what he did do is he placed a seed, a seed that has grown for awhile, to allow us to operate as individuals, to allow us to have civil rights."
Obama urged the crowd to participate in the primary taking place on Saturday. Earlier this week in the Palmetto State, Obama said they would lose the election if people didn't show up, so the emphasis in the final days -- for the senator -- has been directed at get out the vote campaigns.

ED you are not woh yu say you are, stop making stuff about Obama. We are reday for change. We dont want the same old poltic. I like clinton but Obama is what america need.

EW..the most anyone can contribute to a politcal campaign is $2300. Most of the people supporting Obama are contributing amounts of $25 or $50. Did you know that Obama went to a Christian high school in Hawaii on a scholarship? Did you know that he taught Constitutional Law at the University of Chicago for 10 years? Did you know he was the fist African-American to be chosen Editor of the Harvard Law Review? Did you know in his high school yearbook he mentions his grandmother? He is an honorable, brillant man. The kind of man all Americans would be proud to have as President.

Where is this stuff(Swift boating) coming from that Barack does not say Pledge of Allegience? This is another smear from the dirty campaign that the Clintons are infamous for.
Posted by: Bill | Jan 23, 2008 8:51:10 AM
In reference to the posting "EW".
Another political miscreant with tawdy contributions, plied to the gullible as misconstrued as fair commentary. You are a political lapdog and bailbondsmen for the criminal campaign of the Clinton HillBillies (defilers of the legacy of equal opportunity). Clintons are the true Al Qaedas for wanting to perpetuate the legacy of oil based conflict while they get their financial bums greased by the Waltons et al. Its the Clintons and Bushes that nurtured Osama and sold our civil liberties on the guise of their sponsored terrorism threats.Obama is the man, that's why the little ideological lemmings are afraid of landing in the political poorhouse if true change is foisted down their throats. He will forever chnage the policing trajectory of America and its relationships with the rest of the world..its peace in our time again, and I aint Neville Chamberlin. You sound like a lobbyist for the company that sells Hillary's ridiculous pant-suits!... We cant be denied and we wont be dismissed, oh no not this time "Mr Wait your Time...No more folk to shuck to the Clinton huckster jive...one step foward 2 steps backward loose and fast with the facts... This time the good folk of South Carolina wont give Bill Clinton the fat boy from Arkansas a big political blow-job like they did in 1992. No way. Its a new day. Obama all the Way from 2008-2016.
If Obam finds the nomination stolen from him ...he should immidiately join the INDEPENDENT run with Bloomberg to waylay the reprehensible, morally and politically abominable Clintons. Why cant they go back and raise chickens in Arkansas and spare us the indignity of turning the White House into a playhouse once again..I aint Tripping...Linda Tripping that is. Enough of the Clinton 3-some...Hillary, Dick Morris and Bill. Triangulation my political strangulation...not again...

Our vote should not be based on the condidate's ethnicity. We should focus on their merits and policies. I will not vote for Obama just because he and Dr Martin L King are of the same race.

Don't allow yourself to be fulled by those emails and vote with conviction. Find the truth yourself since it is out there free and be part of descent politics Obama portrays.

Ok people, the e-mail is an old one from this summer -- it showed Bill Richardson, Hillary, John and I don't know who else with their hands over their hearts and Obama just standing there -- they were singing the Star Spangled Banner and not Pledging Allegiance --- boy oh boy the Clintons are waist high in muck and mire and I for one am disgusted -- if she gets the nomination either Bloomberg or a Republican gets my vote.

As a Woman of Color I am very upset at the way my Sisters are being brainwashed by their husbands and BFs! A vote for Obama is just another way of us being slapped down by our own men! Our men leave us for white girls. They leave us with babies and no money! They put us down and put shame on us!
Does anyone really believe Obama cares about us Black girls?? He wants into a white world! He will leave us as fast as your man can slap you down!
Hillary Clinton will want to prove she can be better than the men can! She will prove she can do more for us Black folks than Any Obama or Edwards or Huckabee! And Hillary is a Christian- always was a Christian! Not a change-over like Obama! Wake up Sisters and turn Oprah off your TV!
I am not being the fool for a Black man any more!

Look, Obama has a had a clear strategy of getting Republicans to come to open primaries and caucuses to support him. There is nothing wrong with that. He ran an ad in predominantly Republican Northern Nevada targeting Republicans and letting them know they could switch their registration for a day to participate. Again, I have no problem with that. The issue I have with Obama is the way he did it. In the Reno Editorial Board Meeting, he basically said that people were ready for Reagan because they grew tired of the excesses of the 60's and 70's and the overgrowth of government that was stifling the entreprenurial spirit. I think this is a poor choice of words because it basically appropriates Right-wing talking points.
While that might attract Republicans to vote you for a day, it does not attract Republicans to the Democratic Party over the long term. The correct way to attract Republicans would have been to talk about accountability and balanced budgets, and how there was no transparency or accountability with our foreign policy because both the Iraqi Government and the Musharraf Dictatorship had been given a blank check to restore Democracy and fight Al-Qaeda. There is ample evidence that establishes that our tax dollars have been wasted in both Iraq and Pakistan, which bothers all Americans, not just Republicans.
However, when you start talking about overgrowth of government, stifling entreprenurial spirit, and the excesses of the 60's and 70's, you are not making an effective progressive case for Republicans to vote for a Democrat. You are making a case for your own personal gain at expense of the party because you are appropriating right-wing talking points.
Furthermore, In October 1980, opinion polls showed that voters had negative opinions of both Jimmy Carter and Ronald Reagan. They didn't like Jimmy Carter because of what was going on in Iran and the poor economy, but they didn't exactly trust Ronald Reagan with his voodoo economics. John Anderson was a legitimate third party option that year who did quite well for some time, but saw his standing crater after some poor debate performances with Ronald Reagan. Polls going into the last week of the election showed the race was close with President Carter holding a slight lead. After months of dodging, President Carter finally agreed to debate Ronald Reagan when both sides agreed John Anderson would not participate. I believe it was the most watched debate in history, and Ronald Reagan ended the debate with a simple question: Are you better off today than you were four years ago? It was a devastating question to say the least, but Jimmy Carter added to his woes when he said during the debate that he spoke to his daughter when it came to nuclear issues. He was widely ridiculed by late night comedians and media pundits for that comment, and by election day, Jimmy Carter's slight lead became a Reagan landslide.
So I believe Obama is wrong because the country wasn't necessarily ready for Reagan and tired of the excesses of the 1960s and 1970s. If that was the case, Reagan would have led by wide margins throughout the campaign. It was President Carter's poor debate performance days before the election that led to the landslide.

I won't be voting for HRC. She isn't running to be the first woman president, she is running to be the first woman co-president. Her 35 yrs of experience is actually his experience in office( she's only held elected office since 2000) and as his mouthpiece so he can run for a third term. There's a reason we have term limits.

EW,
Hey dummy, the picture with Obama not placing his hand over his heart was for the "National Anthem". You only have to do that for the "Pledge of Allegiance". Most civilians place their hand over their heart for ANYTHING patriotic, while not really understanding protocol. Obama was CORRECT, Hillary and Bill Richardson were not wrong necessarily, but they weren't right either.
Dayum, American people are sooooo ignorant, no wonder Bush got 2 terms.
Funny how Bush voters say "he reminds me of myself".

This election marks historical points, not just the identity (i.e. gender, race, age, religion, etc.) of the candidates, but the TRUE START/EVOLUTION OF THE INDEPENDENT PARTY. This is great b/c for too long the U.S. has acted as the crips and bloods (red and blue) gang. A real choice is evolving before our eyes. YES, A REAL CHANGE IS COMING regardless of distracting irrelevant dirty politics driving by the media and The Clintons mostly. I predict that if Hillary and McCain are the nominees there will be a massive movement towards the independent party, and true history will be made of the BIRTH OF THE INDEPENDENT PARTY DUE TO DIVISIVE CAMPAIGN TACTICS. SO, EITHER WAY HISTORY WILL BE MADE.

Most of the comments are erudite; mine more mundane, Does anyone but me feel uncomfortable after viewing the webpage of the Trinity United Church of Christ, then clicking onto the "About Us" section, and there reading what this church stands for? Obama even appears in the video you can find on the same page.
I just don't know if this should really be a concern- not the video with Obama- but with the expressed tenets of this church. What do you think?

Since the first time, when Mr. Obama's words were: "they said this day would never come", and Mrs. Clinton's "I know what is going on", I realized that he was the man.

Obama represents the new America. One that younger people like myself are helping to make. He's biracial, smart, handsome and genuine. He can relate to all races and once again he's of white and african heritage. I come from a biracial family and we are supporting Obama.Experience is over rated but honesty and integrity are not. With any job there are always people that know more then you and will teach you.
