ABC News' Raelyn Johnson Reports: As Senator Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y., lays out her economic stimulus plan on the west coast, former senator John Edwards, D-N.C., abandoned his usual stump speech for a town hall meeting with voters in Summerville, South Carolina.

Retelling the increasingly familiar story of how the mill in which his father worked closed, Edwards insisted the fight for the middle class is very personal.

"Having a healthcare system that works for everybody and that covers everybody, having a tax policy that helps the middle class, having a trade policy that looks out for American jobs, the middle class and American workers -- all these things are aimed at strengthening and growing the great middle class in this country," Edwards said.

As the South Carolina primary approaches, Edwards is trying to distinguish himself as the only candidate born in the state. That approached worked in 2004 when Edwards wrestled the state from John Kerry, who was on a roll after winning both Iowa and New Hampshire.

On Thursday, Kerry, who eventually picked Edwards as his vice presidential ticket mate, endorsed 2008 rival, Senator Barack Obama, D-Ill.

Edwards' event on Friday kicks off a four-day "Bring it Home" bus tour. He will make stops in Beaufort, Hilton Head, Barnwell, Aiken, Sumter, Florence, Georgetown and Myrtle Beach.
