Huckabee/Colbert '08: Huck Yuks with Mock Running Mate

ABC News' Kevin Chupka Reports: Gov. Mike Huckabee is quickly becoming a favorite on "The Colbert Report", Comedy Central's send-up of political pundit talk shows.  He has been a live guest three times on the show and last night joined host Stephen Colbert via satellite from Spartanburg, South Carolina between campaign stops.

Some background: during a visit to the show back in April, Huckabee suggested that Colbert would make a good running mate.  Ever since, Colbert has trumpeted his influence in Huckabee's success; something he refers to as "The Colbert Bump."  Last night, the comic duo and mock-running mates were at it again.

"I hope you’re ready to take it all the way to the White House, cuz you know you promised me you would be my running mate," Huckabee joked.

Colbert, however, wanted to get down to business made certain that the two were on the same page as far as policy is concerned,

On Evolution: "Do we both still feel that evolution is a farce?" Colbert asked.
Huckabee shot back, "It's all a farce."

On religion: "Are we the candidates who think that Jesus and the devil were brothers?"
"Uh, no – that’s not us." Huckabee clarified,  "But I’ll send you a memo on that and I’ll underline all the parts in red that we need to believe."

On Immigration: "Is it true that you do not support building a pneumatic tube to fire Mexicans back to Guadalajara? "
"No, no I don’t support that – I’m not quite that harsh." Huckabee assured.

Colbert also pointed out that he could fill in Huckabee's foreign policy shortcomings.

"I can balance the ticket for you because I’ve been overseas – I've been to Sandals Resort in Jamaica, I’ve been to Sandals Resort in the Bahamas, I’ve been to Sandals Resort in Barbados – I’ve been to Epcot," Colbert said.

Continuing the light-hearted interview, Colbert worried that Huckabee's notoriously meager fundraising (when compared to his Republican opponents) may prove to be an Achilles heal in their campaign.

"If you’re trying to raise a little scratch, South Carolina gun laws are so loose that you can go into any gun shop and buy as many hand guns as you want – I mean 200 of ‘em – and then ship them up here to New York and sell them on the streets illegally and raise some serious scratch."

Huckabee, still playing along, "How do you think I financed my campaign for the last 11 months"

You can bet good money that come convention time this summer Huckabee will not be joined onstage in Minneapolis by Colbert but perhaps "The Colbert Bump" can keep his momentum going long enough for Colbert to become America's first court jester.

I think it is interesting that Colbert constantly makes fun of and mocks evangelicals and their views (such as stance on evolution), yet Huckabee appears clueless that he is being used at his expense as well as others'. The people who watch that show aren't just laughing with him, they are laughing at him and ol' Huck doesn't seem to grasp that completely.

Colbert makes fun of everyone. That's why every person can watch the show and enjoy it. Huckabee needs national face time, and this provided the outlet.

Outside of the internet message boards... in the real world... most people don't hate people with religious views. In these interviews he seems more like a fun guy, and it puts to rest opinions that he is an intolerant evil "Jesus Freak".

It was funny, and I don't think that anybody hates people with religious views. What I am saying is that Colbert constantly mocks ignorant, conservative, Christians more than any other group and Mike Huckabee made himself a part of it. It will be great for Huckabee in pop culture, no doubt, but to be President of the United States?

You have to score this one for Huckabee. Guesting on Colbert's show means getting outwitted and topped by Colbert... Huck's quick-witted, dry sense of humor turned the tables for once. Few guests are bright enough to parry with Colbert... they just grin and bear it. The Huckster made Colbert the setup guy, much to Colbert's delight. And don't forget to tip the waitress...

While the show is definitely more popular among liberals, the whole point of the show is mocking the mean-spirited Bill O'Reilly style attack journalism, not to mock religious conservatives. The interview was hilarious, and actually made Huckabee look good. He obviously doesn't take himself too seriously, and the fact he appears on the show indicates he's tolerant of other views. Although as a die-hard liberal I would never vote for him, as a regular viewer I certainly was not laughing at him and actually ended up liking the guy after the interview. I would bet that most other viewers like me had the same reaction.

Geez..its too funny seeing people take shows like "The Colbert Report" and the "The Daily Show" so seriously...

There's a reason why these shows are on COMEDY CENTRAL..get it..comedy?? They're funny....ha ha??

Huckabee was great on Colbert..proves why we need someone in office who doesn't take themselves overly seriously 24/7...

I think it's funny that everyone seems to think Colbert does nothing but mock religion when he, in fact, is a Sunday School teacher.

I think Huckabee, more than people think, understands the point of the show.
