Huckabee Treks Across Mich. in Last Voting Effort
January 14, 2008 11:15 AM
ABC News' Kevin Chupka Reports: This morning in Augusta, Michigan outside Kalamazoo, former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee spoke to a crowd much smaller than the one he saw just a few days ago in this state. He told those gathered, "I know many of you didn't know this event was happening until late yesterday afternoon."
In Birch Run, Mich. Friday evening, Huckabee drew a crowd that numbered close to, if not more than, a thousand. This morning in Augusta, only about 150-200 were in attendance.
It seems his Michigan schedule today is a last minute Hail Mary pass. He is still tracking third in most polls here but his packed schedule today is evidence that the campaign believes that Michigan is still in the game plan.
Huckabee's campaign manager Chip Saltsman told ABC News, "We always wanted to compete in Michigan. We always knew it would be an uphill struggle…Romney's home state, McCain won in 2000, but when you run for President, you're running for President of the United States, not President of every other state."
On Saturday, Huckabee spoke to a group of pastors in Grand Rapids, Mich. asking them to reach out to the people on their e-mail lists and in their phone banks to get out and vote tomorrow.
"You've got great influence and I'm asking you to help get people to think about this election not just in terms of one Republican versus another Republican but in terms of the direction of where this country is gonna go," Huckabee said, "and whether or not it is going to be lead by a group of who can share their Judeo-Christian value method or whether they do not and for whom it is a priority."
A fervent population of evangelicals - Huckabee's bread and butter voter block - populate much of Western Michigan and Huckabee is hoping the saturate those media markets in the next 24 hours.
Huckabee's finish in Michigan could greatly impact the momentum of the campaign into other key primaries - South Carolina, Florida - where Huckabee arguably has a stronger hold on voters.
"We are seeing both money and momentum." Saltsman said.

If the Democratic nomination process is over with soon, Huckabee has nothing to worry about. Any loss of Repub. support will be made up by Dems. who don't want Hillary to win. And lets be honest, McCain and Huckabee are the best the Repubs have.
