New Hampshire Turnout 'Absolutely Huge'

January 08, 2008 12:37 PM

ABC News' Karen Travers Reports: New Hampshire Deputy Secretary of State Dave Scanlan told ABC News that turnout among primary voters today is "absolutely huge" -- and there are concerns about running out of ballots in towns like Portsmouth, Keene, Hudson and Pelham.

"Turnout is absolutely huge and towns are starting to get concerned that they may not have enough ballots," Scanlan said. "We are working on those issues. Everything else seems to be going smoothly."

Scanlan said that the Secretary of State's office is sending additional ballots to Portsmouth and Keene (traditionally Democratic strongholds), Hudson (Republican leaning with significant numbers of independents) and Pelham (large number of independents).

According to Scanlan, the ballot strain seems to be on Democratic ballots, which suggests that the undeclared voters are breaking for the Democratic primary. New Hampshire Secretary of State William Gardner predicted that 90,000 undeclared voters would vote in the Democratic primary compared to 60,000 voting in the Republican primary.

Deputy Secretary Scanlan said based on a formula anticipating higher turnout, they printed additional ballots, but in most cases towns will go "right down to the wire with ballots they need." The extra ballots will be insurance ballots in most places so election officials have a comfort level.

Scanlan said reports from polling places show that turnout has been steady and high though the morning but typically high activity periods will be lunch and after work.

I refuse to swallow the Obama pill...people are acting like they are in a cult...it is sickening! If he is the nominee on the democratic side I will either vote independent or not at all....I refuse to give in to this mass hysteria the media has created over Obama, the media coverage has been very limited for some candidates who actually have the potential to make real changes.

"Governor Romney signed legislation to allow an unborn child to be killed for a $50 co-pay. How many children do you think are worth just $50?"

Well, I'm not an expert of the monitary value of Children (as you appear to be Tom), but I think that unborn children are worth next to nothing.

@Nobama, clever name. He went to a muslim school, so what, he's christian now (not that I care either way) so get over it. Also, yeah he didn't want to wear a pin of the american flag. Again, so what, it's just a symbol, obviously he respects our country a great deal, or else he wouldn't be running. Any yes his middle name is hussain, big deal, did you CHOOSE your name?

@Gina Alford, meh I don't care which democrat wins out of the top 3 really, they all seem about the same.

Why anyone at all would vote GOP (unless their relative is a GOP candidate) is beyond me anyway.

Huckabee has a liberal record? Only someone out of touch with reality (or who's never bothered to Google) could say that. He doesn't believe he's descended from primates; he's against choice; he thinks homosexuality is an illness; he believes God is helping his campaign the way it did Jesus in the miracle of the loaves and fishes; and he's utterly corrupt in the way that only smarmy smiley Republicans can be.

I think the only candidate on the democratic side that has the potential to actually change things is John Edwards.

Tom S.:

That was an entire boatload of stupid. Yes, it's a left-wing conspiracy, brought on by the "liberal media" to choose the Republican candidate.

Now run along and watch Rush and O'RLY because adults are talking.

GOP voters, *please* nominate Romney. He has no chance of beating Obama or even Hillary. John McCain is your only chance of winning, but you seem too blinded by your hatred of illegals to give him a chance. I know it must feel great to nominate the most hardcore Republican you can find, but Independents are the key to winning the general election.

Tom S has a decidedly warped view of politics if he feels the media made Mike Huckabee. Evangelicals support him in huge numbers because of his stands on issues of importance to them. Oh, unless you feel evangelicals are simply robots led around by the media.

Romney? Disingenuous, sneaky, and scary.

It's going to be a long decade of progressive rule, get used to it. Obama/Edwards '08

Bah: Thanks for reminding me why Obama is the superior candidate. Your judgmental, petty, prejudiced, ignorant nonsense is not needed in our camp. Barack displays nothing but class, something you have not the faintest clue about. I actually feel a little sorry for you, projecting onto others the qualities that you yourself possess. Classic transference... but you wouldn't know what that means.

What fun! First the Evangelical State gives us an Evang and a Lib and now the Liberal State will give us a Lib and a Lib?

What candidates are the above?

There is no clear read coming out of the process, as yet, because these states are extreme voter patterns. Remember Dean, McCain last go rounds?

Save the gas for the real hills ahead on Super Tuesday!

If Romney squashes McCain over immigration, and then returns to a McCain like position on the issue in the general election (he was already mostly there in Saturday's debate when pressed about the 12 million), I'll sit out November and maybe/maybe consider Romney for re-election in 2012 (if he gets that far) if/if he demonstrates some kind of core value during a 1st term. That's how much Romney turns me OFF right now!

What I don’t understand about everyone crying foul over the media’s treatment of certain candidates is why are you still watching/reading their coverage? We all know news is a business. Businesses only concern is a profit. To be an informed voter means more than simply memorizing your party’s talking points. Quit your whining and dig facts for yourself. No candidate is perfect but imagine if the current VP actually had decided to run...Ok, too nightmarish to imagine.

This new, unspoken requirement that everyone running for office must wear the flag pin is a bit too nationalistic for me. So even though I love that symbol of our country, I also support Obama's decision not to wear it on his lapel. We must all be very wary of people—posters on this site or elsewhere—who denigrate others for not wearing it. The fascist overtones of such requirements are to be avoided in our grand republic. We're all too good for that.

"It is occuring with none other than our journalistic “friends” in the Democrat controlled, liberal media machine, doing all it can to choose THEIR GOP “favorite” for us."

Let's get real, the mainstream media is to the right of center. The "liberal media" is an urban myth perpetuated by conservatives.

Huckleberry scares the country club Republians. So far they have been able to use the evangelicals as convenient idiots who vote for their candidates that then give them the tax cuts and other policies that enrich them that are important to them. Now the evangelicals are tired of being used and are voting for one of their own who will put their agenda ahead of the agenda of the country club Republicans. Huckleberry even has the audacity to care about the welfare of the poor and underpriviledged, like Jesus taught.

Hold your noses everyone.

JUST IN: Begala and Carville coming in to save Clinton's crashing campaign (source Foxnews). Ya think she would understand why she's on her way out. This will seal her doomed campaign. They just don't get it!

She has met the enemy and she is she.

We - repubs/dems/indies - have had enough of the grifters.

NO WAY! Anyone but Clinton!

Don't kid yourself, liberals are feeling great about going against "Three-Card" Romney, he's a flip-flopping Massachusetts chameleon who was for every position before he was against it.

Posted by: rey | Jan 8, 2008 2:56:28 PM

If Obama wins the Democratic nomination, you can count on his Republican adversary winning the White House. It's not the LIBERAL media that wants Obama to beat Clinton; it's the conservative media. Case in point, Bill Kristol, the now NYTimes but former rightwing rag (Weekly Standard?) reporter was simply in GLEE at the prospect of an Obama win, and really pushing for it too.

Obama is the media's favorite because he represents a light (no pun intended) lunch snack for the G.O.P in the end. He has no credentials.

Here's the only realistic scenario for this election: A last minute constitutional amendment nullifying Amendment 25, paving the way for four more years of Bush! Whoooooo!

I'm amazed and thrilled that many Republicans continue to believe that Mitt Romney is their best chance when he performs the worst of any candidate in head to head polls. He will not alienate any major sector of the base like McCain or Huckabee, but he will get absolutely slaughtered among independents. Even those paying no attention can see him for what he is.

Trust me, McCain is your only shot to avoid a bloodbath vs. Obama. Look at the turnout levels and exactly who is getting independent support today.

I've said enough for now... see you folks in the fall....
