Obama Makes 'Em Swoon
January 08, 2008 9:40 AM
ABC News' David Wright, Sunlen Miller, and Andy Fies Report: "Curb your enthusiasm" may not be the message to send to the voters on primary day, but comedian Larry David isn't worried about that.
The HBO star has been stumping for Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., at Dartmouth College and turned up at the campaign's final New Hampshire rally this morning.
The college paper quotes him giving this advice to the candidate: "He needs to avoid saying (expletive) in his speech and sexual come-ons to women around him.
"He also needs to avoid going, 'I dunno if I can do this, I'm scared.' Other than that it'll be alright."
David is also quoted threatening the Dartmouth students who are undecided between Obama and Edwards.
"Okay, alright," he said. "If you don't vote for Obama, I'm never doing the show again."
One student reportedly asked him which Seinfeld character would make a good president.
David thought for a minute.
"Newman," he said. "Because everytime he would give a press conference and walk up to the podium, everyone would say, 'Hello, Newman.'"
With David in Obama's entourage are media maven Ariana Huffington, as well as the Hollywood agent who inspired the character Ari Gold on HBO's "Entourage" -- Ari Emanuel, brother of Rep. Rahm Emanuel, D-Illinois, the House Democratic Caucus chair.
He's the one talking on his cell phone.
It's not the first time a Seinfeld character has been mentioned on the campaign trail. As ABC News' Jake Tapper noted, former Gov. Mike Huckabee, R-Ark., compared former Gov. Mitt Romney, R-Mass., to George Costanza, calling both "expert" liars.
Barack Obama's final campaign rally included a scene that was life imitating comedy.
A Dartmouth student collapsed at the event, forcing the rally to an abrupt stop.
Comedian Larry David immediately perked up, saying "I have a great line, I have to use it."
He rushed over to the metal barricades at the edge of the press riser, stepped up ... and then lost his nerve.
He then went over and tested his line on Hollywood agent Ari Emmanuel who was sitting nearby.
"Go for it, L.D.," he encouraged.
David hesitated a minute, then went back to the barricade just as the stretcher wheeled the poor student away.
He cupped his hand to his mouth and called out to Obama: "Sinatra had this effect on a crowd."
Obama smiled. "That's right, Larry."
But no laughs.
David was clearly disappointed his line fell flat. "I got nothing," he sulked, and then he wandered off.

Obama voted for more military funding and for the Patriot Act.
Don't believe him, Obama is another corporate shill for the military industrial complex just like everyone else.

people that make accusations on obama's voting record need to take a look at the whole picture before making false accusations.... obama has always been against the war from the start but as a leader and a future commander in chief, how could you possibly expect obama to give the soldiers the funding they need to survive out there in such a harsh environment... it goes to show his judgement... about the patriot act, he voted for it once certain riders had been taken off the act that would allow for lobbyist to retain their hold in DC... goes to show a man with leadership and judgement to be president.

about the experience question, if history serves us right then Barack is our only hope:
Our least experienced president was Abraham Lincoln. He has served only one term in the House of Representatives. And that several years before he was elected president.
Our most experienced were Herbert Hoover and James Buchanan. Buchanan has been Secretary of State, Senator, Representative, Ambassador to England and advisor to 4 presidents: Jackson, Van Buren, Polk and Pierce. Hoover’s experience with getting relief to the European people after World War I and as Commerce Secretary should have made him the perfect choice to lead this nation during the Great Depression.
These two, with all of their valuable experience, left the United States with the two biggest crisis in our history, the Civil War and the Great Depression. It took less experienced leaders to lead the United States out of these holes. Experience has value, but pales beside the need for leadership.

Right. So you want to see no one in the White House then? But if that happens what will all you adolescent-minded 'Fight the Power' types do with your time? Think of the next Green Day album!!

Oh for Pete's sake, get off the "Muslim" kick. Christian, Jewish, Muslim, Hindu, Buddhist, all of them -- Obama transcends it all. And remember, what we are freaking out about in this country are "fundamentalists" period and that terms is not just applied to certain Muslims, but also to certain Christians and even certain Jews. If you haven't got anything real to comment about then just find somewhere else to post your negativity. Expect an Obama landslide. I think we'll get it.

I'll bet Obama looks great in a baseball uniform but that doesn't qualify him to pitch the opener for the Red Sox at Fenway Park. He's an empty suit with NO EXPERIENCE OR QUALIFICATIONS.

We have a right to know if Obama is muslim, our country has freedom of religion but our country was not founded on muslim beliefs. If you have ever lived in a primarily muslim country and knew their beliefs, you would think twice about voting a muslim into office, if Obama gets in office we are in big trouble as a nation. If you run for public office there are no secrets.

Obama is not realistic. He promises only blue sky. No rain, no storm in his forecast. How can people are so blind to see. He can't it. He is the one that has to change first, not taking money from special interest!

Obama will run into the same problem Carter ran into. He may win his first term by a landslide, but when it becomes apparent that he doesn't know how to make an economy work (and just got elected by promising everything to everyone) and we're in a deep recession, it'll be another Republican in 2012. Do you think it's worse for the country to be mismanaged by Democrats or Republicans?

It's better to have a Christian(born again)President because the country was founded on Christian foundational principles..the Muslim foundation is violent and murderous as it's leader Muhammad was and dictated..read the history people..Obama's father is a maternal uncle to the opposition leader Odinga in Kenya..How does this relative allow his followers to kill and murder those of other tribes in Kenya because of they say a failed election..will that happen in the USA if Obama fails to win the presidential election next fall..

Barack-Star!
Posted by: Maxwells | Jan 8, 2008 7:45:13 PM
This is truly the first sign of hope in a long time. Senator Obama is the genuine article, and it's sad to see scared people resorting to such petty and simple minded propaganda. Desperate people do and say desperate things, so for all that are conjuring up the ridiculous "Muslim conspiracy", perhaps you should ask yourself why you feel so scared and insecure. And you should recognize that what you are promoting is xenophobia bordering on hatred. My, what a benevolent Christlike philosophy.
Not that it really matters, but Sen. Obama's religiosity was investigated by the major media and nothing insidious was found in his past.(look it up, http%3A//blogs.guardian.co.uk/usa/2008/01/obama_in_the_clear.html .) When he was a child in Indonesia, he split his attendance at the two local schools, one public with many Muslim students and the other Catholic with Christian missionaries. (Who were, by the way, endeavoring to impose their foreign religion on a predominately Muslim country.) And just as non-catholics are forced to pray and read a catholic bible in US parochial schools, he was required to read the Quran and the Bible like his classmates. He was a child, he did what he was told.
Be rational and ask yourself if with today's intelligence agencies, whether he would have been able to be elected a senator, serve in federal posts, and get even close to the president if there were a shred of truth to the insinuations that he has any ties to extremism. Really, the accusation is laughable when it's not so pathetically sad.
And for the record, the country was founded to be secular, despite its being a safe haven for religious radicals from europe in its early years. If you really think that the disposition of the founding fathers (who were more Deist than Christian) are a guide for today, then I suppose you also support witch trials, manifest destiny, slavery, and mysogynous oppression. Please do some research on the five pillars of Islam, the fundamental principles of Christianity, and the philosophy of Buddhism before speaking utter nonsense.
Let's vote for progress, not regression into fear and economic disaster. Sen. Obama is our best chance for fulfilling that hope, which has finally been rekindled after 7 years of fear.

i am proud of my party that our top two candidates are an african american and a woman. being progressive is about progress! i've fallen for obama. he inspires me to care for my country and for my values. he would be great for America.

Are you serious? Are you really that detached from reality? The old saying goes that we should not punish the son for the sins of the father - you are seriously suggesting that we punish the son for the sins of the father's nephew's followers in a foreign country?!? Your small, bigoted mind and all those like it represent more of a threat to the US than a million disgruntled Kenyans ever would. Grow up.

Gabriel, don't waste your breath. These people are so misinformed that they still think Obama is a muslim. How ridiculous can they be? Personally the only think worse than a Muslim extremist is a Christian extremist and how many of them do we have tearing down this country? Like he said......... "Grow up"!!!

All 3 major Democratic candidates are good, however, Clinton and her husband gave the American people the greatest wave of prosperity the world has ever known in the 1990's, AND balanced the budget to boot! AND passed the FMLA, the Brady Bill, put 100,000 more cops on the streets to lower crime, and resolved a nasty Bosnia situation WITHOUT THE LOSS OF ONE AMERICAN SOLDIER. They did all this against a Republican Congress that resisted them at every turn, even shutting down the gov't at one point. The budget passed in the early 1990's with the tax increases (yes, INCREASES, mainly for the rich) that eventually led to budget surpluses had to be passed with Al Gore, as president of the Senate, casting the tie-breaking vote. For those of you who hate any tax increase on an idealogical basis, how are you enjoying your adjustable-rate mortgage payments these days, and their deficit-induced higher interest rates?? WHAT? - it's costing you even more than the taxes you paid in the '90's??? Go figure!
The Clintons did all this and other good things against a Republican blue-blood noise machine that has spent millions vilifying both of them and generating bogus "scandals". The results of this (which continue, currently) can be seen to this day in the high negative perceptions of Bill & Hillary Clinton (many people think, "there must be SOMETHING to all those scandals"). O'Bama, who I like as well, has NO IDEA WHAT HE WILL BE FACING. Remember, even a bogus war in the Middle East for political gain (a 2nd Term) and the economic gain for a limited few, is not beyond their scruples. Hillary, having borne the brunt of this for years, knows about it full well going in. And I believe she is best equipped to beat these folks and the corporately-owned main stream media, and the wedge issues they generate (god, guns, and gays) to mis-direct average Americans, and she will deliver again for most of us average folks. Clinton's biggest mistake was believing President Bush, with a distinguished Colin Powell parroting his words (what a disappointment!), and Great Britain lining up beside him, when he said he needed authorization to go to war with Iraq IF NEED BE, to prevent them from acquiring WMD. No one, NO ONE, believed that a President or any political party would be so cynical and casual with American troops' lives (not to mention the Treasury) to risk them in a shaky idealogical gamble in the Middle East, AND use the fear and patriotism such a war would generate to win a 2nd term. What it means is the opposition will stop at nothing, and I mean NOTHING, to try to get their guys in office to keep the American people broke, in debt, divided, demoralized, and disillusioned. And keep them home on election day.
When it came time to voting for continued funding for the war, Hillary (and all the Democrats) couldn't withhold funds from troops in the field. And even if they wanted to, they don't have enough Republican votes to override a Presidential veto. The Republicans know that. Keep in mind, it's one thing to shut down Washington as Newt did in the 1990's. It's something else entirely to keep bullets and armor away from America's fighting men and women in the field. The only way to get the troops home is to elect a Dem. president. The American PEOPLE, not Hillary, not John Edwards, need to blame themselves for putting this screwball (Bush) in office, and his Nixonian cabinet. Anybody with an ounce of brains, and a little knowledge of history (where were you main stream media?), could have seen that coming in 2000. An apathetic, uneducated American public more interested in seeing elections as popularity contests ("I'd rather have a beer with Bush than with Gore"), and tiny knowledge of the history, sacrifices, and hard times suffered by their parents and grandparents to give us the more just society we have today (comparatively), and refusing to pay attention to what politicians actually do during their terms, gets the leadership it deserves. As 9/11, Iraq, and Katrina show, yes, it really does matter who we put in office. Enjoying that beer with Mr. Bush, everyone?

I'm pretty sure this discussion will go null after the primaries are over. Don't fight over petty details (like who the candidate's mommy was) and respectfully disagree in the issues that matter most. At the end, what really matters is not to repeat the Bush mistake, hence, let's try and stay away from the war monger republicans (hence, if it must be republican, give Ron Paul a chance, and if it can't be Ron Paul, well.. I guess Huckabbe is better than nothing) Apparently we will be better off with the democrats. however... what I want to say is, please vote for whoever you wish without enciting more division in this country, if it is possible, and be smart about your decision, not fanatical.

Obama talks a good talk, but of course, like everyone else, not his own talk, but what his camp thinks will win him the race. But even his talking is grating on my nerves now. He just sounds like a motivational speaker now and Zig Zigler can beat him on that. I've also recently noticed his arrogant swagger and really detest it. I was for him in the beginning, but not now. He and Edwards thought they would gang up on Hillary, but she's smart and savvy, she came back and whipped them both and I LOVE IT! The men have had their time in the White House, it's time for a woman! A woman who is very qualified for the job, at that.
And, if you think a person's mother, family, first formative years of his/her life, etc., doesn't characterize a person, you are so very wrong!

Obama's yells out he did not vote for the war. he is correct..but our President and Vice President was telling the congress and the American People Sadam has weapons of mass distruction..Would we ever think that our President and VP would lie to us? NO
So its obvious that a No vote would be a naive vote, what if it would have worked the other way. Would Obama be bringing up his not vote?? HIGHN SIGHT IS BLISS...Does Obama tell us he voted yest to Fund the War? No and why is that..because that contradics his no vote for the war.. How about all the votes he did not attend or all the present votes because he did not want to commit..lets research before we put our Wonderful Country, our beloved Country in the hands of Obama who may very well be nice, but has no experience to lead, make dicisions that will keep our country safe, to uplift the economy.the rise of healthcare, gas and the serious fundamental problems that are facing us. We can not put our Country in soemeone that does not have the capabilities, experience to really bring solutions to our problems..no matter how many fantacies Obama gives us the bottome line he is a Jr. Freshman Senator of 3 years..How can he possibly handle all our worries. He will only bring us more grief... Please research, vote for the person that can hhas the experience that bring us back to the Good economics that we once had before this administration.

Your votes will make or break America. Vote wisely research your candidate. Our Country is in an uproar with the loss of jobs, high gas prices, war, terrorist danger and so much more. /think that telling us there will be change, turn the page, but not having the experience to come through will be disastrous for our Country, for our citizens and we can not afford to support this Candidate. Obama does not have the EXPERIENCE and with out Experience, how can he possible handle all that awaits our Nation. Please do not vote for Obama!! It's your Country it’s your life do you want to take a risk on words and false hopes, although he may want to, he does not have the experience to do so...Lets vote to get our Country on its way to prosperity! Let’s vote for global respect! Let’s vote for Hillary Clinton…..For better days ahead!

Hillary Clinton is the wisest choice for the presidency. I do like Obama and find his speeches somewhat refreshing but it bothers me when I hear a candidate running for the Presidency talk about "smackdown politics" and the way we do it in Chicago, well I find it a little alarming. If that's what he is selling as "Change" then we all might want to take a better look.
I find Hillary anything but Status Quo. She represents the real change. People you got it wrong with Bush don't get it wrong again. We are running out of second chances. Hillary has a vision and and an offering of how she plans to achieve that vision. I hear Obama speak of change but I never hear how he plans to achieve those changes. His is really a pretty weak format. We do need change but we also need a leader with experience. Hillary offers both.

I don't see anything faulty about the fact that Barack voted in favour of the Patriot's Act. He opposed the war from the beginning and spoke up against it but when it comes to supporting troops that will fight a war already approved, its perfectly alright. Should one vote against not funding them yet they are on National Duty risking their lives for the country? Not funding them would still have them in the war but less facilitated. So I think its alright that Barack did not support the WAR but supported the U.S TROOPS when they already had to go on the battlefield...and I think that's patriotic of any person that appreciates that the army were doing their duty. Mine though is a view of a non American and I wouldn't say I know much your politics so if I 'm wrong I ask to be corrected.
Posted by: Ronald | Jan 10, 2008 4:13:31 AM
Obama wasn't even in the senate when the vote took place. As a matter of fact he has a habit of being missing in action when all the voting takes place.
However he did manage to vote for financing for the war. Hmmm funny that.
