Obama: "My opponents didn't expect me to be here"

ABC's Sunlen Miller reports: Barack Obama told a crowd in Pahrump, Nevada that the nasty back and forth between candidates in the race is due to his opponents not expecting him to be this far.

"I think some of my opponents didn't expect me to be here, so now they're kind of going into negative mode" Obama said, "It's ok - I don't think it's gonna work this time."

Following a day of back and forth jabbing with Senator Clinton, Obama called this part the "silly season" and defended himself again over his opposition to the Iraq war, a topic which the Clinton campaign has criticized recently.

"I opposed this war in Iraq from the start. One of my opponents is trying to rewrite history, but I just want everybody to be clear - every respectable news outlet will tell you - I opposed this war in 2002 when I was running for the US Senate, I opposed it in 2003, 4, 5, 6, and 7 - I put forward a bill at the beginning of last year to set a timetable for withdraw."

Obama spoke to the Pahrump crowd for about 40 minutes until the power went off in the building. A few back up lights avoided a near black out in the Rosemary Clarke Middle School gym, and Senator Obama yelled, sans microphone, for about ten minutes before electricity was restored.

oh puleeeze!, Obama takes lobbyists money, hires them on his campaign staff, he didnt vote for the war? fact check.....he didn't vote at all........so he did support or try to stop it.......he continues to support it.......he advocates 100k more troops be sent soon.......his plans do not redeploy our troops back to the usa, his plan is to send them to other war zones on the map....hardly an improvement

people read up on these candidates.....don't believe what the media tells you......they want to sell ad space!

I find it interesting that everyone has forgotten that Obama started attacking Clinton first. Now he is claiming to take the high road and point to the Clinton campaing as being only negative. As Clinton pointed out in an interview "Obama is a skilled politician" -- with the operative word being "politician". For everyone who believes Obama represents change, you are tremendously naive.

At what point did obama "start attacking hillary". He has run the most positive campaign I have ever seen in years. Look, the Clintons see right in front of them that the their boomer generation politics of division are dying. Obama represents the future and they will not relinquish their power in the democratic party without pulling Rovian tactics first. It does not take a political expert to see their strategy of "race-baiting" prior to SC. It is a sure fire way to get out the white vote to put down those "uppity" blacks. The Clintons should be ashamed of themselves. If obama loses, I will be voting for the green party.

Clinton may win scratch out a win in the end, but Obama will make her earn it. This is as it should be. This is not a coronation. Hillary Clinton is not a queen. Let the people decide.

Anyone who believes Obama attacked Clinton is mistaken. Obama has never "attacked" Clinton. He has responded to Clinton or Clinton's surrogate attacks. The Clintons are living up to their reputation. The thing is this time it will be hard for them to convince people they are victims. They have lost it.

Obama is a smart and skilled politician. He know what words to use to draw people in, but if you look and listen it's nothing more than talk. He's using the race card to divide this country.

No Mr. Obama, neither the vast majority of the people in Illinois (including myself) that voted for you for the U.S Senate. You have disappointed us. Where have you been this couple of years besides running for President while we have to deal with energy issues, taxes issues and the huge massive transportation problem in Chicago?

We need Obama back in Chicago and Illinois to EARN the salary we have been paying him for doing nothing in Washington. Is time for him to work with his hands instead of using just his mouth. Why Obama don't try to mediate in the huge transportation issue we have now and the CTA mass transportation funding bickering between his two friends the Governor of Illinois and the Major of Chicago. Isn't Obama the one that is capable to negotiate and work for the people? Why he doesn't do it here with the CTA funding problems we have in the city. Obama is all talk and his cult followers are desperate to buy into it.

You talk alot, you did it in Illinois; but where are your real achievements showing us all that you are the leader to be a President? You expect us to elect you to the highest office on earth just based in empty promises? Some of those are not even original ones! You gotta be kidding!

As a resident of Illinois I have long been disgusted with the "under the table" corruption that runs RAMPANT here. What disgusts me even more is that when blatant evidence is exposed, the accused individual always finds a way to "make it go away". Chicago Mayor Daley is the chief source of most of the corruption in the state ("Operation Silver Shovel", etc.), but somehow he's always able to walk away with his hands clean. Oh, by the way, he's a big Obama supporter. Also, Illinois House Speaker Mike Madigan (and current Illinois Democratic Party Chairman) was under investigation by the Feds. No problem. He and the Illinois Democratic Machine got Madigan's daughter elected Attorney General of Illinois. Gee, what ever happened to that investigation...........As far as the Rezko case, Obama is not the only one having a connection to Rezko. Rezko was a fundraiser and close friend of the current governor of Illinois, Rod Blagojevich - a governor who is also being investigated by the Feds for his own corrupt practices. (Ironically, Blagojevich came to power by vowing to clean up the corruption created by Republican Governor George Ryan.)Those of you who still aren't convinced that Barack Obama is yet another cog in the Illinois corruption machine should look up the Todd Stroger Cook County Board election scandal. Barack Obama unabashedly threw his full support to Todd Stroger despite the dubious way Stroger even got to become a cadidate. Why would Obama even endorse such shennanigans? I don't have enough time to go into this one, but trust me, it's a beauty. Look it up!Whether Obama himself is corrupt is yet to be determined, but his associations do cause alarm. Are these the same associations that would follow him to the White House? Obama is not "squeeky clean". We in Illinois know better.I will close by saying that I am not a Republican. I am not a Democrat. I have been forced into cynical independency from Illinois politicians that continue to disappoint

Can someone please explain how Obama is playing the race card? It looks like Hilary is playing both the race AND gender cards. Also, how has he attacked her? And when will Bill stay out of his wife's campaign? His constant presence and her crying and nastiness are making me wonder whether she's woman enough to run a country.
This former Hilary supporter is now voting for Barack in the NJ primaries.

Look -Nobody thinks Hillary or Bill Clinton are racists. She misspoke. The problem that I have is her inability to admit that she was wrong. Adding insult to injury, she sends out Bob to continue to prove her pointless point. Sometimes I feel that she is obsessed with being right and is willing to put forth a weak and down right ignorant argument versus simply saying, hey I could have said that a little differently, I misspoke. So what that in her opinion Obama compared himself to Dr. King and JFK! Alot of media outlet had already been doing exactly that. She and her advisers decided to take up this issue by saying he was no MLK or JFK and that Lyndon Johnson was the hero. She did it not because she's racist, but because she thought that it would give her a political edge. Her assertion that Obama is interjecting race into the contest absolutely SICKENS me!!! She brought up race to belittle Obama among blacks and drive away white votes by accusing him of pulling the race card. This is wrong and it is deepest hope that she suffers politically for such a silly and divisive move.

When did Obama play the race card?? When has Obama ever personally attacked Clinton????????????????? This man has run (along with Edwards and the others running) a positive campaign! He has not gotten down in the dirt with the dogs (and yes, the Clintons are dogs!). I am being negative towards them...Senator Obama has NEVER been negative towards them! He's been nothing but gracious. If you could get your biased head out of Hillary Clintons behind long enough you would SEE clearly that Senator Obama has NEVER ever engaged the Clintons at all! He was forced to start saying something because it was getting out of hand! He has ONLY commented on their ignorant comments when he was asked about them and even then he's been gracious! It's sad that he even has to stop to address these issues to begin with! Be Fair DAMN IT! This man is the BEST running and I think many are afraid of that---including the Clintons! That's why they are stooping so low. They are classless! Like two pitbulls. They are greedy for power and they will do anything to get it! ANYONE with an objective opinion can CLEARLY see the light!!
I'm sick of these attacks on Senator Obama. He has only criticized Hillary on her policies..NEVER any personal attacks. He congratulated her when she won New Hampshire. She did not congratulate him when he won Iowa and when she SLIGHTLY won NH..she didn't even acknowledge him..she tacked his name on at the very end of her 'congratulations' list...as if he was nothing..but she is always calling his name when she is giving speeches or doing interviews..HE MUST BE IMPORTANT TO HER! She's jealous that she doesn't have the same affect on people that he has! She just doesn't have it! People don't want her! Too sad---too bad! Exit the stage Hillary! Your time is up and please save the fake tears...you've used your woman card up..cry again and people will really know you are a phony!

Well some of his "opponents" and the public will have some open eyes when the Feds trial against his buddy Rezko starts in Chicago this coming Feb 25. It will be plenty of dirty again the same politicians -including Obama- that used the fixer to rise money for their campaigns.
It will be fun to watch! Stay tunned!

Posted by: Rick | Jan 14, 2008 2:45:17 PM

LOL @ Rick That story is old and has nothing to do with Barack Obama! If there was really something to it don't you think it would be all out there right now!
Check your facts and educate yourselves please! The Clintons have so much dirt and so many skeletons in their closet. They'd better be careful where they tread. Even James Carville has warned them to be prepared! HA!!! They have nothing on Obama..they were so dirty and low to look through this mans Kindergarten papers! HA!!!

Posted by: Shelly | Jan 14, 2008 2:53:02 PM

Shelly- old news? sure...you think is all news, fine!. OK, wait until Feb 25 when the trial starts. Lets talk then. This is a real trial my friend is not kidding or a joke. LOL
I'll be watching the spectacle here in Chicago. It will be fun fun fun!

Posted by: Rick | Jan 14, 2008 3:25:50 PM

Huh, hey Rick, Shelly is correct. The indictment has NOTHING to do with Obama. Obama had a shady dude by land next door to a house he wanted. AND????? There is no law against that. Obama never got anything for this. Riezo never asked for or got anything. However, if you wanna talk scandals, there is always......
Whitewater,
Travelgate,
Hillary leading Bill's Bimbo smear team,
Ron Brown's death,
Chinese missile technology sale,
African missile attack to distract Lewinsky investigation
.....and other gems we have yet to discover. If she gets elected, there will be more scandals within the 1st year. And more spin.

Posted by: ROB | Jan 14, 2008 4:44:20 PM

This whole thing is part of a coordinated vast barack obama conspiracy. I bet his initial opposition to the war was designed just to make Hillary look bad. But Bill will set them straight!!

Posted by: Clinton Bush VI | Jan 14, 2008 4:55:08 PM

Bill is running for President?

Posted by: HC | Jan 14, 2008 5:07:02 PM

Bush snr handed over to Bill. Bill handed over to Bush jnr. Bush jnr. will hand over to Hillary. By the time Hillary finishes, she will hand over to Jeb. And by the time Jeb finishes, Chelsea will be ready to take over.

Can anybody tell me what a monarchy is?

Posted by: chyke | Jan 14, 2008 6:28:45 PM

Obama did not vote and is using that as one of his many weak stands. He has attacked Hillary in the early days of his campaign and not surpise if he started this race thing behind the scenes.

Edwards is his insulting buddy - Edwards is only in the campaign to gather votes to use them for a political gain. He knows he does not have a shot. He sides with Obama doing some of the dirty work ... if Obama loses he gives Obama his votes to win over Hillary and a political position..Look at the last election how do you think he got the VP nomination. If Obama wins Edwards still wins...a win win situation. Edwards is only in it for the gain not the people - so a lot of the dirty campaigning is also coming from Edwards.
