Obama Slams Clinton for Nevada Mailer
January 16, 2008 4:18 PM
ABC News' Sunlen Miller Reports: Senator Barack Obama slammed Sen. Hillary Clinton Wednesday for sending out fliers to Navadans that he said misstates his health care plan and position on social security.
The Obama campaign supplied reporters with a copy of the Clinton campaign mailer, that reads: "We need a President that will help hard working families keep more of what they earn."
Inside the mailer are contrast images of Clinton and Obama. "Barack Obama. A plan with a trillion dollar tax increase on America's hard-working families," it reads, "Hillary Clinton. A blueprint to rebuild the road to middle-class prosperity."
At a campaign event at a convention center in a Las Vegas suburb Wednesday, Obama chided Clinton for sending out the mailer.
"Some of you may have been getting these, a flier lately from Senator Clinton’s camp that says that they are gonna solve Social Security just by showing fiscal responsibility and 'Obama is going to initiate a trillion dollar tax cut (sic) on hard working families,'", Obama told the crowd, "I want to be clear about what the social security debate is ... we don't have an immediate crisis, but we do have a long term problem."
(Later the campaign said Obama misspoke, that he meant to accuse Clinton of accusing him of a tax increase -- not a tax cut.)
Obama said his plan would bolster social security coffers by removing the current cap on the very highest of earners -- not a general tax raise implied by the Clinton mailer.
"This is what I proposed, this is what Senator Clinton is calling a trillion dollars on hard working Americans. Now maybe she thinks that the top 3 percent of the population is the average, middle class America. It is not. Just so you’re clear. So if you get that flier, I just want to make sure that everybody understands what my plan is."
Obama continued to jab at Clinton's social security stance, reminding Nevadans about what Iowa voter and Obama supporter Tod Bowman said Clinton told him about her plan for social security.
“What’s worse is, Senator Clinton, when she was on a rope line in Iowa, somebody asked her about this, she proposed the same, she said she’d be open to the same plan that I just offer. But now is sending out a flier calling this a trillion dollar tax cut. I want to make clear that everybody understands that, he said.
Clinton responding to Obama Wednesday, telling reporters she believes Obama's plan for social security would amount to a "one trillion dollar tax increase".
"We need to focus on solutions that don't increase the tax burden on middle class families," Clinton said.

Iron John, are you reading some other article, perhaps?
You seem to be practicing the same rhetoric as your candidate of choice - inventing a distraction to point everyone to distract everyone from the ugly news that you don't want them to see.
Sen. Clinton is dishonest, Sen. Obama called her on it. End of story.
It is his honesty and refusal to play games that are allowing him to make such massive strides so quickly. As long as Sen. Clinton continues to play her brand of politics, Sen. Obama will continue to rise in the public's eyes.

My vote is for Obama or ANY republican. I can't deal with any more Clinton White House -- and all these Clinton tactics are reminders of what it was like.

Hillary sent out mailers lying about Obama's record on Social Security and women's issues in New Hampshire as well. Apparently that's going to be how she runs her entire campaign, the exact opposite of how the Obama campaign is run.
I hope the Obama campaign is prepared to aggressively set the record straight.

I voted for Bill Clinton, twice, but I will not vote for Hillary unless Rudy Guiliani is the Republican nominee. Twice today, the former president said Barack Obama is the "establishment candidate" and Hillary is the insurgent. It has become embarassing that he will say anything, even something this absurd, to get back into the White House and the power it affords. Its about power for the Clintons, not what is best for America. Obama must win!

obama, please put more emphasis on how your presidency would look like. so far, everything has been good but from now on you need to give a clue about your economy policy to the american people.

ARE WE SO BLIND NOT TO THINK RACE AND GENDER WOULD NOT PLAY IN A QUEST FOR THE DEMOCRATIC NOMINEES. REMEBER WE HAVE HILLARY CLINTON RUNNING FOR PRESIDENT. THIS IS THEIR STAUS QUO TO DIVIDE AND CONQUER USING "OLD" DIVISIVE, SLIMY AND NEGATIVE POLITICS TO TURN VOTERS AGAINST EACH OTHER. HOWEVER, THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY WILL NOT WIN REGARDLESS IF HILLARY IS THE NOMINEE BECAUSE SOME VOTERS WILL VOTE REPUBLICANS INSTEAD! DON'T THINK YOU CAN BE DIVISIVE, SLIMY AND DIRTY IN THE PRIMARY AND EXPECT THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY TO COME TOGETHER FOR YOU DURING THE GENERAL PARTY! VOTERS MEMORY MAY BE SHORT TERM, BUT WILL REMEMBER HOW YOU PLAYED LOW, DIRTY, NEGATIVE AND DIVISIVE POLITICS IN THE LONG TERM!
THAT'S WHY SENATOR OBAMA WILL BE THE BEST PRESIDENT TO BRING ALL PEOPLE TOGETHER! THE STAUS QUO IS SO AFRAID OF CHANGE, THEY'RE WILLING TO USE SAME "OLD" POLITICS TO DIVIDE AND CONQUER IN A RACE FOR THEIR OWN GAIN! UNFORTUANTELY, IF HILLARY CLINTON IS THE DEMOCRATIC NOMINEE, SHE WILL FIND SOME VOTERS WILL BE VOTING FOR THE REPUBLICANS. AND WHAT A CHANGE THAT WILL BE!
NOTE: THE HIDDEN AGENDA OF MOST OF THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY IS: IF WE CAN NO LONGER DEPEND ON THE AFRICAN AMERICAN VOTES, THE NEXT GROUP AT OUR ADVANTAGE WOULD BE THE HISPANIC/LATINO VOTERS. THAT'S WHY THEY'RE PUSHING FOR DRIVER LICENSES REGARDLESS OF YOUR CITIZENSHIP STATUS IN NEW YORK!

Perhaps the moderator could delete off-topic posts?
I've read Iron John's post in several blogs now, and it wasn't relevant to any of them. It's distracting.
Back to topic at hand. Perhaps the next debate could include a question for each candidate as to just what 'middle class' means to them in financial terms.
I accept that it takes more money to live in the NYC area (or LA or San Francisco) than in the rural South or Southwest, but I don't see how extending the cap on Social Security contributions is going to have a hugely detrimental effect on the middle class as I know it.
Why can't Clinton just say what Obama's plan is, rather than 'characterizing' it?

This is VERY SIMPLE.
I am middle class guy here in CA.
"If and when" the cap for SS is raised, I WILL PAY HIGHER SS TAX !!
How can anyone with a right mind argue this is NOT a tax increase for middle income people, as I am not the only one in this case ??
The problem with obama and his supporters are they cant stand it when anyone questions his inexperienced plans.
It is also funny to me that his own campaign had to correct HIM for what he misspoke after he rushed so quickly to try to correct hillary on her viewpoint of his tax increase for the middle class.

Hilary and her husband, Slick Willie, are the same - LIARS. America is tired of that kind 'lying' politics. I heard Hilary twist what Obama said yesterday during the debate. She said Obama said he was not nterested in managing the government and would hand it over to others. What a LIAR. They play on the ignorance of the uneducated. What a couple!

Okay, anyone who makes $97,000 a year is upper middle class. Someone like baseball player, Alex Rodriguez, who makes $25,000,000 a year is only taxed on the first $97,000 of his income.
Raising the cap to save social security only affects the top 3% of earners in the country.
Sen. Clinton seems to have a bunch of pity on the rich..hmmmm....maybe that's why she's accepted over $15 million in her campaign from lobbyist and PACs.
OBAMA '08!

This is so discouraging to read that Hillary would do this, but not surprising; back to the "win at any cost", scorched earth kind of politics. How wonderful... sigh.
Why distort the positions of your opponents like this? Just tell the truth, and let people make up their own minds. I swear, this woman would do anything, sell her daughter to win this one.

What happened to the truce? Oh, that's right -- it was only about the racial thing.

Yeah, if Obama doesn't win I may be voting Republican the first time in my life. I can't take Hillary. Her double talk and the machine which is her family greatly disturbs me. The only candidate worse than her is Romney. Does anyone believe a word that comes out of his mouth? Though, Huckabee is pretty bad with his God-doesn't-like-the-constitution babble...oh boy. This is bad. My preference is Obama, if not him then Edwards, if not them then Giuliani or McCain.

The point is....we don't need to raise the cap in the next 8 years. For craps sake people....we get taxed on everything we do. EVERYTHING! Why talk about raising taxes when we don't need to.
And Obama's line about it being a long term problem and not immediate....IS CLINTONS from the beginning. JUST LIKE HER 2 brigades and risidual forces to protect the embassies.....THAT EDWARDS AND OBAMA now use. Give me a break. If you paid any attention, Senator Clinton is always ahead. We forget. And then you all claim that Obama has the solutions!
Their healthcare plans, for example are all based off of her leg work. 1300 pages of blood, sweat and tears. Their plans are remarkably similiar. So, does he have great ideas?? Sure, they're all Hillary's.

Whoever is orchestrating the Clinton campaign is a clone of Karl Rove and just as disgusting. I am a life long Democrat that will NEVER vote for this women!
