Obama Targets Clinton on the Economy

ABC News' Sunlen Miller Reports:  Senator Barack Obama, D-Ill., told a Reno crowd that the economy is deteriorating rapidly, and criticized his main opponent, Senator Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y., alleging a change in her economic stimulus package.

Obama pinpointed his criticism on Clinton's recent addition of the tax rebate within her economic plan, an inclusion revealed just yesterday. Clinton has always left the door open for an inclusion of such a rebate within her plan, but Obama is capitalizing on this as a sticking point, because he's had a rebate plan in his economic package from the start.

"Senator Clinton - she released her own stimulus package and it didn't have these, this tax relief... she thought that that could wait until things got worse. And we were criticized by some in their camp, saying, 'Well, that's not the right way to go, we need to have this different approach.'" Obama told a Reno crowd, "Five days after she released her plan, she said, 'Well, ya know what we need is a tax rebate.' Because now, apparently, she agrees with me. She's got the same approach that we do."

Obama painted Clinton's addition of the tax rebate, not only as following his lead, but as evidence that she is changing her positions for the politics of the moment, "Senator Clinton has said she is ready to lead from day one, but it's important on day one to get it right, whether you're talking about war or you’re talking about economic proposals… I've been less worried about making political points on these things, but getting them right."

Obama brought up more examples, sighting Clinton's criticism of his answer from Tuesday’s debate on his greatest weakness. Obama joked that if he had answered the question like Clinton or Edwards he'd say his greatest weakens was helping old women across the street. "I'm sorry, I thought when you said what's your biggest weakness you meant what's your biggest weakness… But this is what I mean. This is political speak. This is what you learn in Washington from all those years of experience. It's funny except it's sad, because it means that the American people are constantly having to sort out what do people really mean."

Obama concluded that these implications erodes confidence in politics, and implied that the recent back and forth between the two top candidates were because he's done better than expected in the election so far.

"I was very popular when I was twenty points down. I was a good American, a wonderful inspiration - funny how politics works," Obama joked, "We find ourselves now in the middle of a fight that nobody expected was gonna be there. Everyone had written off my campaign in the summer, and here we are. I haven't been thrown off the island yet."

I just have to laugh listening at Obama talking on the economy. Question for you Mr. Obama, where have you been while we have to deal with our own economic crisis here in Illinois?
This guy will do and say anything to get elected, one thing tho...he is a fast learner of the political machine apparatus and in the same way got his way up to the U. S Senate, he is trying to get the Presidency all based in promises, promises and promises and dancing around the big issues.

Obama is right to criticize Clinton. She has been following him since Iowa beginning with 'Change' and continuing with every turn of the campaign.

I have always liked the Clintons and supported Bill during zipper-gate etc but I am really disgusted by their tactics.

I live in Illinois and I can tell you the problems that we have have nothing whatsoever to do with Obama and more to do with Dennis Hastert and his crooked cronies.
I am also a caucasian woman in a male dominated field so I am all too familiar with the glass ceiling but I can't in good concience vote for Hillary. At least with Obama there is a chance to rise above the Washington filth.

Obama is getting nervous on this issue.

His answer on the debate was a big waffle if not shambolic and I think confidence in his ability is crumbling.

When it come to the economy, I will take Clinton camp regardless her proposal. These are all election headline. The Clinton camp had a record to show. It's not only against Senator Obama plan, but even against all other previous presidents in recent history.
Can you name one single president, who had better record on economy in recent history ?
No one can be sure how to revive the economy without risking long term deficit and inflation. I am not economic
major, but I do know that, no plan is perfect. It will take an experience economic team to navigate the rough patch we are in now. They will have to adjust and response quickly to the reality.
I use to live in a communist country. They alway have 5 years plan. Guest what, It never achieve anything close.
Talk it easy. Be able to execute a plan is much harder.

Times have changed significantly compared to when Mr. Clinton was president. Current economic problems are tied with our ever increasing fiscal deficit due to most abhorrent foreign policy. Any inclusive gesture towards Middle East and Venezuela would relief pressure from oil prices. If oil comes down to $70/barrel, we will see an immediate improvement in our balance of payments and dollar will appreciate. Obama will end the war in an orderly manner. He opposed the war from the very beginning and has no negative history attached to it. When he speak to the world as our president - world would listen because the man has character.

People use your best judgment, consult your heart and mind, and look into the eyes of your kids before you vote this time. It is our time to believe and Yes We Can.

Terry, we are already in depression, our GDP will grow a meager 1.3% in 2008 and the inflation was appx 4.1% in december. You can see it is negative growth.

There is no batman or superman who can rescue us from our own faults and emotionally driven decesions.

We have to take responsibilty for our actions. So let us all admit that we have had a terrible last 8 years because we voted without taking responsibility.

The inclusion of people in decesion making is the fundamental difference in Obama's approach.

I imagin we all will be supporting a real democracy with a voice with Obama.

Its interesting that people seem to dwell on the Clinton's as the PAST saviors and on the economy I shall give some credit. But here are some facts. It was Bill then and Hillary now. Please try and distinguish between Bill & Hillary.

And guess what, Iraq is projected by the IMF to grow by at least 8% in 2008. Why? Well some guys and gals in Washington decided to invade the place against commonsense back in 2002 so there is where your hard earned dollars are being invested and spent to get the GOP and their Democratic war mongering supporters off the hook of a war that should never have been authorized or waged! Who in the Democratic party voted for this debacle?
Well, it was not the the so-called rookie.

Who spoke out the strongest against the war and predicted the thousands of lives that would be wasted and the billions in dollars that would be squandered?
Well, it was not the so-called seasoned pros and their ex president husbands. It was the so-called rookie.

So now you have it! Iraq booms and you get to pick-up the tab. Oh, and loose your homes while you do it. Great for having all these very so-called experienced people!
Look at how the campaigns are panning out! It gives you a snapshot as to how the candidates will run their administration. The last time I looked the so-called experienced and seasoned pros have had oh, 3 to 4 resignations and issued as many apologies.
Malice? incompetence, lack of judgment?
A POTUS and HIS administration must avoid any one of these. To suffer all 3 not once, not twice but 3 or 4 times points to an organization rotten to the core!

OBAMA 08 and proud of it. Jus plain commonsense stupid!

Hi,

It has been analysed for Old and Folks. A Rookie to day will surely move on to be A Great now like M Johnson In his sport days grew from a worst Rookie with no sound Education than to be roaming about the street of his local.

As such, what we are all witnessing now is a Brain Storm work and Brilliancy at Ploitios and not a walk on the streets looking for Hookers to hve a nice time without the use of Condom and evetually contributig to EDown fall of Human Resources through Aids and Aids Viruses like M Johnson.
