O'Reilly Tangles With Obama Staffer
January 05, 2008 3:29 PM
ABC News' Sunlen Miller Reports: When candidates are working the rope lines after their events, it’s common practice to see reporters yelling questions at them as they are greeting voters.
But, after Sen. Barack Obama’s event in Nashua it was a reporter, FOX’s Bill O’Reilly, who got in a tete-a-tete with Obama’s National Trip Director, Marvin Nicholson.
O’Reilly was trying to get access to Obama, who was unknowingly just working the rope line about ten feet in front of them. Nicholson, standing 6 foot, 8 inches in height and a veteran of Senator John Kerry's, D-Mass., 2004 campaign, was standing next to Obama, as his job calls for, and thus blocking O’Reilly’s cameraman from a clean shot of Obama.
So O’Reilly took things into his own hands…literally. He maneuvered around the steel gate barricade, yelled expletives at Nicholson, and called him "low class."
In an interview after the incident, Nicholson said, "He grabbed me with both arms and tried to push me out of the way."
Secret Service then stepped in and told O’Reilly to get back.
After the commotion, Obama shook hands with O’Reilly.
Nicholson, however, said he’d never seen anything like it.
"I've never seen a member of the press lay hands on a staffer before."

O'Reilly is the poster child for low class. I wouldn't have shook his hand. I would have pressed charges. He needs to find a rock and crawl under it.

Bill O'Reilly is so utterly inappropriate. He's more interested in what he wants, getting video clips to use to trash Obama on his program, than being a decent human being.

This behavior on the part of O'Reilly shouldn't surprise anyone. He is a horses.....*&$#! And, call him "Press" is a stretch. His behavior is like that of a spoiled bully.

I am a loyal Ron Paul fan, but have not heard much about Obama, so I am still waiting for the debate. But after hearing he shook the Faux's hand, my opinion dropped significantly.
Ouch.

Wow, O'Reilly's lucky he didn't get arrested.
Posted by: Erika | Jan 5, 2008 4:15:45 PM
Yeah, that O'Reilly is a nasty gas-bag. I've never thought the man was completely stable. Fox is taking a chance by keeping him around. These types seem to grow more volitile as time goes on.
Posted by: 4cryingoutloud | Jan 5, 2008 4:18:23 PM
This would be a predictable event when an over-the-top commentator (O'Reilly) meets an officious and aggressive bodyguard. They BOTH needed a reprimand for their behavior. I used to like Bill O'Reilly until he began sounding like a televangelist, and now I rarely agree with him. But I give him credit for saying what he thinks without regard for "political correctness".
Posted by: rmberryman | Jan 5, 2008 4:39:40 PM
O'Reilly and his staff are nothing more then thugs. I've seen his show and think he is as stupid as his staff. I stopped watching his show on FOX because of his crap.
Posted by: JJ | Jan 5, 2008 4:39:56 PM
O'Reilly was just hoping the guy would be confrontational so he could go on his show and badmouth Obama and say he sicc'ed a goon on him.
In all honesty my first reaction would be that O'Reilly would have got hit so hard that it would have left him in a vegitated state. But it's people like him and Limbaugh that help drive away people with any sense at all from the republican party. So I want the fool to keep doing what he is doing. :)

TURN it into a "white and black issue"? I actually like Obama, but I've noticed that whenever he is speaking to a predominantly black audience he ALWAYS plays the "race card". This is sad, because he doesn't need to do this, and he loses white support when he does it. Barack Obama NEEDS some white votes if he is to have a chance at being elected. And he should remember when HE makes it a racial thing, there ARE camera and microphones present, and his remarks WILL become public. Bill O'Reilly will have little or no effect on Obama's success or failure. The "Religious Right" will do everything in their power to sink Obama; O'Reilly will be "preaching to the choir".
Posted by: rmberryman | Jan 5, 2008 4:44:25 PM
Obama is just a new boss that will be the same as the old boss! Obama's advisers are(google)Richard Clarke & Zbigniew Brzezinksi (foreign policy) and will more than likely end up is his cabinet of advisers, essentially amounting to the same status-quo interventionists foreign policy that Bu$hco has now. Nothing will change!
Posted by: Bill Hicks | Jan 5, 2008 4:44:45 PM
O'Reilly is completely out of control. Whether it's interviewing someone with opposing views, or trying to get a staffer to go to bed with him, he feels he has this "entitlement" because he's famous. As far as I'm concerned, he's just another right wing ### talking head that needs to be smacked down.

O'Reilly's a NOBODY. He should stick to sexually harassing his female producers.

A spirit grand as Obama's would cause an ego bloated as O'Reilly's to get desperately physical.
Posted by: missy erin | Jan 5, 2008 5:01:24 PM
Bill O'Reilly has followers and fans for the same reason Hitler did: He's low and evil. Popularity does not equal decency or worthiness and O'Reilly exudes only the opposite of any virtue. He SO creeps me out.

This is just another senseless act from a selfish member of the Press. Its people like him that give the people who are good at what they do a bad name. I totally beleive o'reily was out of line. Just let these staffers (who put endless hours of work in each day) do there jobs. Its hard enough as it is. I can only imagine what the dirty Leprechaun would do if he was on the other end.
Posted by: Luke Dickens | Jan 5, 2008 5:07:00 PM
Bill O'Reilly always says he never says what he actually says over and over and over. Now, I suppose he'll say he never did what he actually did. Will he do it again?

O'reilly is not a racist. Please don't play that game. I am an occassional listener to Bill O'reilly and I am a conservative. I have no reason to doubt that this article is accurate, so I will assume that it is. That being said, if O'reilly did what he is reported to have done, then he certainly acted more than just inappropriately. In my opinion, his actions would border on criminal assault and he should be held accountable for his actions. Can you believe a conservative is even saying this? But please....stop with the race baiting.. It was not a racial incident, it was a political incident.

O'REILLY IS TRYING TO RAISE HIS SHOW'S RATINGS by creating a commotion...
This story makes Bill'O Reilly of Fox Noise, the W-OR-S-T P-E-R-SO-N in the Woooooorld, would say MSNBC Keith Olbermann, with a religious musical organ chiming sound heard in the background.
He is doomed journalist, i'm sorry... commentator, so is Fox-News doomed as well, going out of Business.

I"ve realized a long time ago that FOX news IS NOT A NEWS Organization.
It seems as if they try to be the news by pushing and walking the line to get reactions. And then reporting/exploiting those reactions as news. They have their own agendas and that's what they try to project by masquerading as a news organization.
These methods are no different that a Supermarket tabloid. But since they have viewers who actually absorb this as news, makes for a very scary situation.
I do believe that their max market is the 23% who still support this president.
Posted by: roy | Jan 5, 2008 6:05:20 PM
I am stunned that someone would make this a racial issue. I have been inspired by Barack Obama and I am a Republican. I don't agree with O'Reilly on every thing he says at all. But Barack is running on a theme of working together. If we aren't going to work together and unite then I'll just vote for a Republican.

o'reilly's not even that bright sometimes....there are numerous clips of his "genius" replayed every so often on Howard Stern, including reading an email from one Jack Meoffer, who had high praise for bill...

Posted by: Anthony | Jan 5, 2008 6:18:06 PM
Just what changes is obama talking about changing? Maybe he got this idea from Diva Oprah. The future is dependented on the young, but the young need to learn from the seniors. Obama pull the race card talking about the marches in the south and how many young were killed. This is a big mistake on his part, many politicians have been done in by making this kind of remarks. So far no one has made any changes to speak of not even Obama.
Posted by: boy blue | Jan 5, 2008 6:19:41 PM
What is most unforgivable is not how O'Reilly treated the staffmember, which I agree is quite pathetic. It's his apparent disregard for his fellow citizens who were standing in line to greet the candidate. Who says that having a TV spin show on Fox TV entitles you to a better view than your fellow citizen? What kind of self-importance is this? I've seen local Fox reporters wait patiently and respectfully at political events. Pushy children go to the back of the line.
Posted by: Ronald Loui | Jan 5, 2008 6:25:05 PM
Apparently on CSPAN, O'Reilly said that Obama was "... a great guy." This all smacks of a Fox ploy to me, to tell the truth. Fox ratings must be plummeting with their share values to make them this desperate. It's just another case of the Fox that cried wolf. Now, the New Hampshire Republican Party even refuses to host their biased debates.
Posted by: Ty | Jan 5, 2008 6:26:34 PM

RW,
Yeah, O'Reilly's got it coming, but he actually feeds on your hate. Obama's got the right idea: shake his hand and refuse his interview. After all, he's not even a really interesting spectacle.
Posted by: Ty | Jan 5, 2008 6:49:54 PM
When is the press going to get off their rear ends and actually start asking some tough questions of Obama.
Actually I think they are afraid of being perceived by their peers as too tough on an African American candidate.
Well folks this isn't about race this is about a guy who wants to be president of our country. (Howard Kurtz
of the Wash. Post has quiet a column on this very issue today.) Obama entered the political arena of his own choice, and I want to know who the heck he is and what he stands for. I'm tired of the dreamy, childlike promises of something down the road with a hearty serving of hope and a new day(almost sounds like Huey Long). I want no more starry eyed fluff from the press corps either, DO YOUR JOB IF YOU REMEMBER HOW.
Posted by: song123123 | Jan 5, 2008 6:55:07 PM
Hmmmmm. I was just thinking....Why is 'Orally' shooting a camera himself? Is his show losing so many viewers to Keith Olbermann that they're cutting back on staff??
Posted by: Alex | Jan 5, 2008 7:04:22 PM
Hey Alex et al: Read the article before you post a comment. He had a "Camera man".
Posted by: newarlin | Jan 5, 2008 7:09:31 PM
I think the point that Alex is trying to make is this: Why was O'Reilly reduced to bullying secret service guys and going around the security barricade? The answer Alex is this: O'Reilly is not a real reporter, Fox is not a real news station, and they--like the Sun and the National Examiner--are not invited to real political events, whether they're hosted by republicans or democrats.

Posted by: nupe942001 | Jan 5, 2008 7:30:03 PM
Song123123,
So, you're saying that you like bullying commentators like O'Reilly? You want our reporters to break security barricades and push past the secret service? And for what? It's sensationalism, not news. If you want to know what Obama is about, go to his website--check ABC's link. Fox, CNN and MSNBC all ran stories on him that showed him without letting him speak.
Posted by: Ty | Jan 5, 2008 7:33:29 PM

Chris,
No... no, no more hate. That's why Obama shook O'Reilly's hand. Really, when you consider it, the New Hampshire Republicans know just the right way to handle Fox: just don't let them represent you. That's how all of us win.

Reading through the postings on this board provide a really good insight into what's wrong with America. With a few exceptions, most posts are far right or far left... just like the so-called "choice" we have in today's politicians. No one is willing to compromise anymore, and nobody is a moderate, apparently. Bill O'Reilly can be interesting or irritating, but he is neither great nor is he the Devil personified. If you don't like him, don't watch his program (I quit a couple of years ago). But just because I lost interest in his new-found "theocon" evangelism doesn't mean others shouldn't pay attention to him, if they choose. We should always allow opposite opinions to our own.

Network television is very competitive. What O'Reilly did is very common. Most of you don't know that because you don't have a Secret Service press pass and have never worked as a political reporter.
Posted by: Stephen | Jan 5, 2008 9:08:00 PM
The delusional O'Reilly once again has overestimated his importance, just as he most always tends to overestimate his influence on national issues. Though I agree with his positions about 90% of the time, the remaining time he is usually acting like an arrogant, pompous ass that speaks oh so vividly about the person he really is, and thereby negating any inkling on my part to find him palatable. Mr. O'Reilly may be smart with his finger on the pulse of the feelings of a good portion of the average American's sensibility, but he certainly is not a nice person and despite his best efforts can not conceal that fact.

I am an independent first off. I like Obama and I do like O'Reilly how he speaks his mind. However, as most independents feel (also a crucial part of the vote who will probably stir the election) is that Obama DOES NOT answer the tough questions on shows like O'Reilly or the fact does not go on them. He is the number one show, so if you say people don't like him, of course, you either hate him or like him. But in the end, if you are intimidated that Bill is right wing and you don't want to go on his show, how in the world can you run for president?

WHAT DO YOU EXPECT? Bill O'Reilly works for Fox News and get this: Fox engineered Ron Paul out of a sponsored Republican lunch today. Check out this article on Wikipedia (with citations) and look at January 6, 2008: ttp://tinyurl.com/2tdoxv

"The New Hampshire Republican Party had been sponsoring a brunch forum with presidential candidates to be broadcast on Fox News. Candidates Ron Paul and Duncan Hunter were not invited to this event, despite the fact that Paul polls higher, and has raised significantly more money than Fred Thompson, who has been invited. Ron Paul got 10 percent of the Iowa vote while Guliani who was invited got just 3 percent. Fox News said they had only enough room for so many candidates as a reason why Paul and Hunter were not invited.
This caused Paul supporters to send a number of protest letters to the Fox News network. New Hampshire Republican Party Chairman Fergus Cullen released a statement on the 31st of December regarding the primary weekend debates where he mentions the exclusion; “Limiting the number of candidates who are invited to participate in debates is not consistent with the tradition of the first in the nation primary. The level playing field requires that all candidates be given an equal opportunity to participate – not just a select few determined by the media prior to any votes being cast.” On January 5th, 2008, following Fox News' continued refusal to allow Paul into the forum, the New Hampshire Republican Party withdrew their sponsorship of the event."

Fair and balanced indeed.

What people who like O'reilley do not understand is that he hates America. There is a huge difference between disagreeing and the absolute disrespect he has for other people. He also does not know the difference between debate and name calling, or the difference between patriotism and facism.
