Patrick Leahy Endorses Barack Obama
January 17, 2008 11:31 AM
ABC News' Rick Klein, Sunlen Miller, and Jennifer Parker Report: Giving a small boost to Sen. Barack Obama's presidential bid, Sen. Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., announced his decision to endorse Obama Thursday.
"I believe many around the world have lost respect for America, " Leahy said on a conference call with reporters organized by the Obama campaign.
"I think we can restore that respect but we need a president who can re-introduce America to the world, and actually re-introduce America to ourselves," he said. "I believe Barack Obama is the best person to do that."
Leahy, a veteran Washington voice, and chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, gives Obama more establishment support, and credibility on questions of leadership.
While Leahy may not be a household name outside of Washington and Vermont, his endorsement comes as Obama has begun to roll out a series of endorsements from Democrats -- Sen. John Kerry, Sen. Claire McCaskill, D-Mo., and Arizona Governor Janet Napolitano.
His backing of Obama is also a small blow to Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y., who is running on her record of experience in the White House and in Congress.
"My endorsement is not in opposition to either Senator Clinton or Sen Edwards, both of whom I know and admire," he said, "but I'm looking at who can do this best and I believe that Barack Obama can."

What this might do is lead to some stories about how Obama is getting all the big endorsements lately. It really is remarkable how he's continued to build on his momentum even after the New Hampshire loss.

Is funny to see all the old establishment in Washington playing the "SAFE" card. They are splitting their support between Hillary and now Obama series of endorsements (even tho he criticizes Washington entrenched powers"- all talks of course!; the Washington entrenched establishment rather gamble with a rockie than for example support Edwards in this case; since Edwards is running against them and the lobbysts, and the lobbyist job is the next career path for most of then when they leave Congress. What a corrupt system we have!

Wow. This is huge. Why did Leahy snub Hillary? Clearly they are catching on to Obama's message but I think part of it is that the Democrat establishment is starting to realize the Clintons are a huge liability and she will most likely lose the general election and have negative coattails for Democrats running for reelection. I smell more big endorsements coming for Barack.

Yup, this is not admiration for Obama; it's just playing safe. They are doing to Edwards what they did to Governor Dean in the past...squeezing the guy, first off cash, then media, then machine support. Their first choice was Hillary and know they are playing safe with Obama, just in case. Figures ha ha. I am wondering what kind of change would that be?????

Don't tell me that the gender card isn't being played by these male candidates. They are so afraid of their ego. Awwwwwww. Patrick is just another traitor. I would like to know just one thing plz---what if it were their Wife's, girlfriends running. That's it, im telling your mother patrick. Go Hillary!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks Sen. Leahy. Thanks for understanding that this election is about the future and not the past. It's about moving forward and not enhancing a Dynasty.
We need more progressive leaders like Sen. Leahy.

dang, clinton supporters, your sour grapes are disgusting, but understandable since that's all you've been eating since obama got the culinary workers' endorsement. what, are y'all gonna sue patrick leahy too?
you know that if your girl had gotten his nod, she'd be doing cartwheels. and so would you. haters!

Marge, did Governor Jane Napolitano play the gender card when she chose to endorse Barack?
Posted by: Hey Marge? | Jan 17, 2008 1:30:42 PM
What is really irritating about this gender card game, where people support the woman in the race because she is somehow a victim, is that the women of N.H. would have laughed Barack off the stage if he was the one to get all teary-eyed in front of the camera when things weren't his way; but if Hillary does it, don't we all feel for her. I don't get it. She continues to play us vs them, men against women, and now the race card. America just doesn't need this folks. We need a leader, not a divider. As for women candidates, hey, give me Pelosi any day, but not Hillary. Hill will tear the country apart.

So Marge are you telling us Hillary hasn't played the gender card? Please, I can give you at least three examples. And, now, she has plans to give an interview to 20/20 or 60 Minutes or someone news org. regarding the Monica deal. You mean to tell me, that is not a form of playing the gender card? Give me a break. She, Hillary, knows what she is doing.
Apparently Patrick can see that having Hillary is the eventual nominee means a huge and massive mobilization of Repubs. and Indeps that will come out against her. And let us not forget the number of Dems in your own party that don't like her......
I think it was smart on his part to go with someone other than status quo....

Funny how if the Nevada Unions, female Governors, and other IMPORTANT Senators endorsed Hillary, her supporters would be soooooo hyper. But they downplay everything Obama gets. Maybe these people that actually work with her know something we don't?
And BTW, can somebody find a link, example, etc., where Obama played the race card? And not just because the Clintons said so.
But she plays that gender card like a piano....ridiculous.

I don't believe Senator Clinton will win, for several reasons. First, she's a woman, and even women are hesistant to support a woman for the top job. This is a huge hurdle, that may prove too much. A sad commentary on the state of being female in SUPPOSEDLY the most powerful nation on the earth committed to equality. But also, more importantly, because I simply think people are grasping onto the change mentality. Fair or not, Hillary is linked to the past.
I will say this one thing, I hope democrats understand what they are doing. This is going to be the most challenging time in our nation's history.. on all fronts, economic, trade, safety, etc. Putting a one term liberal senator up as our nominee will open us up to the same barrage of attacks we always have to field, with a candidate less ready to take them on. Democrats are too weak, too pansy on defense, to inexperienced. I fear, we are falling into the same old familiar traps. I pray Obama can break through, because we may not be able to survive another republican president. Think hard, democrats, about what it means to "change". Is change a word? Or is it action? I know we all crave the new.. and the young.. and the inspiring. But what if you viewed the USA as a failing business in need of a turnaround.. and you were looking for a CEO.. would you hire the person that gave you pretty talk? Or would you hire the person who had the management skills, even if they were less sexy? Think Hard.

Interesting question about Vermont Senator Leahy's endorsement of Obama over Clinton, since he has a picture of Bill Clinton hanging in his office. Of course, maybe it's because Leahy is from a period when women were expected to stay at home, cook, clean and while barefoot and pregnant. After all, his wife Michelle, whom he married 40 years ago, still lives at their Tree Farm in Vermont and is a homemaker who dotes on Patrick when he comes home from Washington. Hmmmmm....
