Ready, Set, New Hampshire Debate!
January 04, 2008 9:39 AM
On Saturday, January 5, 2008 -- only two days after the critical Iowa caucuses and three days before the first in the nation New Hampshire primary -- ABC News, Facebook, and ABC affiliate WMUR will team up for a historic debate night.
Republican and Democratic contenders for the White House will meet on stage in two separate events, both in primetime, and presented by ABC News.
The participants for the Republican debate will be as follows:
Former Mayor Rudy Giuliani, R-NYC
Former Governor Mike Huckabee, R-Ark.
Senator John McCain, R-Ariz.
Rep. Ron Paul, R-Tex.
Former Governor Mitt Romney, R-Mass.
Former Senator Fred Thompson, R-Tenn.
The participants for the Democratic debate will be as follows:
Senator Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y.
Former Senator John Edwards, D-N.C.
Senator Barack Obama, D-Ill.
Governor Bill Richardson, D-N.M.
"World News" anchor Charlie Gibson moderates the Republican contest first from Saint Anselm College in Manchester, New Hampshire, from 7:00-8:30pm ET. The Democrats take the stage second, from approximately 8:45-10:15pm ET.
Surrounding each debate, "Good Morning America" host Diane Sawyer will anchor live reports, providing a re-cap and analysis of the evening's events. She will be joined by "This Week" anchor George Stephanopoulos. Bianna Golodryga will report from the ABC News/Facebook desk.
To participate in the debate, all candidates needed to meet one of three criteria:
1) Place first, second, third or fourth in the Iowa Caucuses
2) Poll 5% or higher in one of the last four reputable random sample New Hampshire telephone surveys sponsored by an established news organization and conducted and released on or before January 4, 2008.
3) Poll 5% or higher in one of the last four reputable random sample national telephone surveys sponsored by an established news organization and conducted and released on or before January 4, 2008.

If it's not too late, how can I obtain tickets to the debate? I am trying to obtain two tickets and I haven't been able to find this information anywhere. Thanks.

This Iowa caucus was equal to the straw poll results.
Ron Paul received the most independent votes. Most donations from active and retired military. *Most straw poll wins.*
Huckabee and Romney won't get much help from the south.
Guiliani's strategy may make him seem MIA in the next few weeks.
Support flip-flops amongst social republicans...a Revolution continues.

What is the source of this report? Last I heard, Fox News was going to be excluding Ron Paul (who by the way had triple the # of votes as Guiliani in Iowa).

Matt,
As far as I know Fox News is still excluding him in their Sunday debate, with no explanation. ABC's Saturday debate (which this article is referring to) is including him. ABC has determined who to include base on a set of metrics (listed above) that the candidate should meet. This is a reasonable way to determine who to include. But who has accused Fox News of ever using reason? Kudos ABC. Now if you'll just air that 20/20 interview of the good Dr. by John Stossel you would be head and shoulders above the rest.
Thanks ABC,
Doug from Bama

Read the editorials of all the major NH papers - the debate should be open to all the major candidates including Congressmen Kucinich and Hunter

I would like Katie to get the attendance records of Clinton, Obama, and Edwards. It appears that Obama has not been present to vote on important issues if true than how can we depend on him to do the job. I would like to see their attendance in Congress and voting records because this indicates to me how well they will do as president if they are not willing to vote or deal with important issues and I don't care if Oprah is backing Obama. I like her show but she is not well educated so I would not follow her advise on this. Give us the records. Thank you and enjoy your news, Katie.

I would like the candidates to all be asked what personal experiences they have that makes them relate to the "heart" of voters and why this experience gives them insight into handling the responsibilities of being President as well as enables them to be eliminate the partisan politics that has torn this country the past 20 years.

Obama has missed a good number of Senate votes. I don't know how many, but it is beginning to look like what John Kerry did when he lost in the last presidential election. That was the reason that I could not vote for him. Obama is being paid to vote in the Senate. If he is not doing it, he is getting paid for not doing his job.

"3) Poll 5% or higher in one of the last four reputable random sample national telephone surveys sponsored by an established news organization and conducted and released on or before January 4, 2008."
Are you suggesting that a corporate controlled news organization is capable of conducting a reputable telephone survey? That's funny because I think of "reputable" as being indicative of having no conflict of interest, of being transparent or at least verifiable by a neutral third party.
When I see George Stephanopoulos tell a candidate more than a year before an election that he has no chance of winning, and I see that candidate jump the hurdle, and I hear no apology from Mr. Stephanopoulos for trying to steer public opinion, the word "reputable" does not come to mind.

In the upcoming debate,
Please ask the candidates if they think illegal immigration effects economy, health care, taxes, social security benefits, and national security. Am I mistaken or did most of the ALLEGED hijackers on 9/11 carry expired visas? 7 years later we're experiencing a loss in civil liberties yet nothing seems to be done to resolve our government's incompetence regarding deporting these law defying immigrants / guest workers.
CHANGE = Ron Paul Revolution

First of all if you want a politicians voting record, they are of PUBLIC record, google that state's senate, congress whatever and you can narrow it down to a particular member. No one has to HAND THEM OVER, they ARE public record! And for the moron that said Oprah was not very educated? you are obviously living in a box! Oprah HAS A COLLEGE DEGREE! where have you been?
My opinion is this, any candidate that seeks to legalize any type of discrimination should not even be allowed to run! and yes that means those that seek to change the constitution to legalize discrimination against gays! DISCRIMINATION IS DISCRIMINATION! no matter how you look at it. I am not gay, but it doesnt matter! Saying 'civil unions' are ok but no marriage is the SAME THING as saying the 'blacks can ride the bus but only if they sit in the back!" this is America pple....ALL MEN ARE CREATED EQUAL HERE!!
and if a candidate wants to build a wall at the border of mexico they are a communist! Fix the system! people wouldnt 'sneak' in if they could legally get here in less than 15-20 years doing it the legal way! and that is only if you want to work here, we all know that if you just want to come here and 'learn to fly a plane' we will give you a VISA so you can then crash our planes into our buildings!
People need to get off their racist, prejudice high horses and look at the facts.

Hey everyone - we're three medical students on the residency interview trail and would love to attend to attend the debates tonight. Any ideas on how to get them? Thanks.

This is an interesting Democratic primary season, in which a candidate may achieve nominee status on the strength of platitudes and style alone, without enunciating any substantive ideas.
I will never forget seeing Obama field a question from an older woman in one of the town meetings held early in this process, asking what he would do to make this country safer from terrorists. His response? "No one can question my patriotism!"
Since the Democratic nominee, whoever that may be, is favored to become the next President, this turn of events is particularly dangerous for the country, and the world.
I guess that doesn't matter to a lot of folks. So long as the candidate makes them feel good about themselves, that's all they care about. It's anguishing to watch a candidate like Clinton, who is so qualified but not charismatic, be rejected in favor of Obama, who is so charismatic but unqualified.
A vote for Obama seems more like an exercise in political self-abuse than anything else.
Posted by: Mike Frazier | Jan 5, 2008 1:17:52 PM
Political Self-Abuse? isn't that what George W has been doing for the last 8 years? lol*
The only thing Clinton is 'qualified' to do is return the 35 years of FAVORS she now owes! I don't want a President that is OWNED by special interest groups and PACs!! I want a President that OWES ME not the man with the most money!!

I have been a republican but no longer care to be one. During the debates they kept talking about incomes of $50,000. I do not make that much and never have made that much with a computer career and a college degree. I do not have friends or family that make that much either. As usual the people that are attempting to be president do not have a clue about how most americans live. Wake up!!!!!!!!!

Watching the Republican candidates convinced me to vote Democrat. Ron Paul sounds like he may have a bit of dementia but he's the only one who has at least some grasp on our poor role as a bully around the world. None of the candidates has a grasp on the health care problems facing us. Government has proven they are inept since they can't adequately fund Medicare and refuse to control pharmaceutical costs. Romney's plan of coverage for all sounds interesting but he brown-nosed the drug companies and they're a huge reason for rapidly increasing costs as well as insurance companies who just don't want to pay for care.

John Edwards ... sheesh! Is he angling for the VP spot on the Obama ticket? I will never vote for any ticket that has this jerk on it.
He must really be frightened of Hillary.

Huckleberry is a hypocrite. He says he is against negative campaigning in the middle of showing a negative campaign add!! He quoted the Declaration of Independence in tonight's debate in New Hampshire, saying that all men are created equal regardless of race, age, or national origin. What did he leave out? "Regardless of religion"! The founding fathers were predominately non-orthodox Christians including Washington, Jefferson, Franklin, and Lincoln (not a founding father but close enough). John Adams' wife even considered Jefferson and Franklin to be deists and not Christians since they denied Christ's Deity and also rejected Protestantism and Catholicism.
ENOUGH FIGHTING EACH OTHER OVER RELIGION AND LET'S GET DOWN TO FIGHTING THE DEMOCRATS AND OTHER GODLESS MEN WHO ARE ATTACKING AMERICA AND THE CONSTITUTION!! ROMNEY IS OUR ONLY CHANCE AGAINST OBAMA. HE THAT IS NOT WITH ROMNEY IS FOR OBAMINATION!!

McCain won!
Posted by: Brenda Fenner | Jan 6, 2008 12:11:54 AM
CHANGE? How?
All candidates promise to make changes but they don't know or they don't exactly say how they are going to do that.
Experience shows that throughout the years all the presidential candidates came to Washington to make changes but none of them could actually change some of the issues.
My family and I are going to vote for the candidate either republican or democrat who tell us how the changes are going to be done.

I watched the entire debate and though you will not here this from any political commentary, Romney won the debate.
He was the only one who spelled out a solution to health care without going to socialized medicine. He discussed education and immigration more extensively and knowledgeably than any other candidate. He also demonstrated that he realizes that radical Islam should not only be fought against by military might and explained briefly what else should be involved to confront the jihadist mindset that leads to the violence.
I don't know why the actual issues that were discussed in the debate are not being reported by the press. McCain acted childish at times and like an angry old grandpa behind a fake smile at others.

I quite agree with Mike Frazier's comment that says, "A vote for Obama seems more like an exercise in political self-abuse than anything else." We, as a nation, already are paying deeply for electing a president of limited foresight who exploited both the fear factor of 9/11 and religion to be re-elected. I hope we are not self-defeating ourselves again by choosing an inexperienced candidate on the basis of personal charm, populist claims, and empty promises. 81 years ago, Winston Churchill said, "I HATE Iraq. I wish we had never gone to the place" after paying steeply to hold "on to the violently rebellious territory". The current president doesn't know history and does not seem to understand that it's a whole different thing to invade Afghanistan versus Iraq. Now our inexperienced candidate, Obama, is talking about taking unilateral action in Pakistan, thus destroying a vital and delicate relationship with a Muslim country which has a nuclear bomb. He seems unable to grasp the big picture and the serious repercussions this action would cause. We need a president who will rectify past blunders caused by the current president and mend fences, not someone who will aggravate the situation by making more foolish mistakes. When will the Iowans learn that the presidential race is not a beauty contest, but the serious business of choosing a commander who will lead the world's only superpower in a wise and level-headed manner. Hopefully, the residents of New Hampshire will make a wiser decision.

I have watched with great interest all the debates but I want to compliment Charles Gibson and all the staff who worked on the debates in New Hampshire...they were the BEST! I heard no celebrity stupid questions like "what's your favorite Baseball team?" ...the questions were helpful to American's trying to make a very important decision as to who will serve America best. It is nice to hear someone answer a question and be able to speak for more than a 30 second period of time. I thought Charles gave each candidate a reasonable amount of time to present his/her thoughts. He had done his homework and it showed! Networks pay attention....thoughtful questions need to be asked and facts need to be checked!
We are looking for honesty and integrity
in our politics and most especially in the person we pick to lead us for the next 4 years! GOOD JOB ABC !!
