Romney's Roll of Thunder
January 19, 2008 5:53 PM
ABC News' Matt Stuart reports: Riding on his recent wave of victory, Mitt Romney claims he would have won in Nevada even if the Mormon population didn’t vote at all.
"I'm happy to have their support," Romney said. "I wouldn't want them to be disappointed that I didn't appreciate their support."
Arriving in the Jacksonville, Florida airport Saturday night following his win, Romney commented about the role religion played during a press conference with reporters.
As a loud roll of thunder went through the terminal, Romney said, "maybe He's got something to say."
Mormons make up just 9 percent of the state’s population. However, according to entrance polls, Mormons accounted for 26 percent of Republican caucus-goers, per ABC News' political analysis Gary Langer. Ninety-five percent of them supported Romney.
Romney also prevailed in non-Mormon groups, and even led Mike Huckabee among evangelicals, 39-22 percent. In the Michigan primary on January 15, Romney won evangelicals by 34-29 percent, after getting hammered in this group by Huckabee in Iowa.
The poll also showed that when asked if they were looking for a candidate who “shares my values,” 45 percent of Nevada caucus-goers picked it as a top attribute. Among GOP candidates, caucuses-goers chose Romney by a vast margin, 59-11 percent over Paul, with 9 percent for Huckabee.
Romney also prevailed among other groups, including Hispanic Americans.
"I expect that this campaign will cross ethnic and religious and gender lines and will generate the support that I need to win the nomination," Romney said.
Romney was of course the only major candidate to really compete in Nevada.

Listed below are links to weblogs that reference Romney's Roll of Thunder:
Big deal! Romney won a neighboring state. Talk to me when he gets a big one. The battle for 2nd in Nevada is far more interesting.

Sheesh! The caucuses and primaries just got underway and Romney's preening like he's won already. Sorry there, Mitt, the show's over when you've won the presidency.
BTW, that clap of thunder you heard was a warning that you should man-up over your lobby donations...

This is like a horse race. No one wins until they cross the finishing line but Romney is in front of the pack right now. It doesn't mean he will win but it's nice to be upfront with to other two than being last with Giuliani

And everyone (a few southern Evangelicals) was so worried that the man upstairs wouldn't speak to Romney... He apparently cares enough to talk to reporters!
Great news for Romney on the Evangelical front. Is Mormonism even a question?!
Romney has beaten Huckabee in the Evangelical vote in three out of five states, come within 1% in New Hampshire, and came in second only to Huckabee in Iowa. Pretty darn good.
Did anyone mention that Romney is ahead of Huckabee in the Florida polls as well?

rw3, what neighboring state are you talking about? Utah? Mitt went to college there and saved the Olympics, but I wouldn't exactly call it a neighboring state for him.
If anybody should be embarrassed here it's McCain. Talk about a neighboring state...he's from right next door in Arizona and he comes in behind Ron Paul?

The race has really just begain, but people have dropped out already, Thompson will be the next I think, and I hope Hickupbee does.
they are running out of money and a couple more defeats will end it.
If you vote for Bilary, you want to raise taxes, be told how to live, change your life style, be the small person supporting the Clinto machine, if you want that, then vote for your man Clinton woman. Monica Lewinsky is the girlfrind of the ex-president who's wife is running for the office. Seems strange doesn't it.
I hope you libs wake up.

Ron Paul brought independents to vote because he believes in liberty. Not big government telling you what type of light bulb you have to use. We need less government bueracracy. Liberty, prosperty and peace, what better motto can you have? Its time people to take a stand and bring about real change.

To No lib supporter:
PUHLEEEEZE keep up with current affairs of Bill's! Lewinsky is a fossil now.
What's strange is your employment of androgyny to Hillary.
Everyone, including wackos, is entitled to their opinions, but kindly desist from telling people how to vote.
I sincerely hope you don't own a firearm.

Go Mitt Romney! You have proved that you can appeal to a wider audience than just 'mormons' and that you do have what it takes to win!!

I find it interesting that Mitt has won 3 states (versus McCain's 2 and Huckabee's 1), has had more votes cast in his favor than any other candidate, has more pledged delegates than any other candidate, has a better-organized campaign than any other candidate, has more money than any other candidate, and has the most solid family values out of any candidate. And yet for some reason the media wants to pretend he's perpetually on the edge of defeat. Oh, did I mention that as of this morning, he's significantly ahead of every other candidate in Florida? Watch out! This may be the end for Romney!

Wow, I could barely find the info in this article in all the anti-Romney spin. Matt Stuart, learn to write. The thunder was a single sentence idea that didn't even fit. Nice finisher with the, "Of course, Mitt won without the Mormon vote simply because he was the only one campaigning there." It sounded like a CNN article.
