Sharpton to Bill Clinton: 'Shut Up'
January 28, 2008 2:32 PM
ABC News' Rick Klein Reports: Rev. Al Sharpton on Monday weighed in on the raging debate inside the Democratic Party over former President Bill Clinton's advocacy on behalf of his wife's campaign, with two choice words for the former president: "Shut up."
On ABC's "The View," Sharpton said voters are hearing "race charges, race-tinged rhetoric" in the Democratic primary campaign, and called on the former president to cease.
WATCH THE VIDEO HERE.
"I think it's time for him to just be quiet," said Sharpton, who was a Democratic presidential candidate in 2004. "I think it's time for him to stop. As one of the most outspoken people in America, there's a time to shut up, and I think that time has come."
Sharpton didn't say which comments in particular bothered him. But many Democrats were particularly upset that the former president made an explicit comparison of Obama's campaign to Jesse Jackson's victories in South Carolina in 1984 and 1988, in an apparent attempt to explain why his wife didn't win the South Carolina primary on Saturday.
For his part, Jackson told The New York Times that he wasn't bothered by the comparison. Still, he told the newspaper that he had spoken to both Obama and President Clinton over the weekend, and told both to "take it to a higher ground."

I still can't believe it... me, agreeing with Al Sharpton ! Miracles do happen.... The fact is I do agree with him.... Mr. Clinton, SHUT UP! You are not running for president, your wife is...You've had your turn, let her have her own... and let's get it out of the gutter and back to the issues...Bill, go do some humanitarian work, God knows this country needs it!

I would bet more people would want rev Al to shut up, then Bill Clinton. Infact last I knew he(Bill) was still making a good living giving speechs.

THE WORLD TO AL SHARPTON.. YOU SHUT UP!!! All you've ever done is shoot off your mouth.. Talk about "The pot calling the Kettle black".. Your a big bag of hot air, and even the Black's are fed up with you.. butt the hell out.. You only bring down America..

I interviewed Al Sharpton on Saturday. He is a very articulate man in person. Its a shame that hes allowed handlers to take him in the directions that he has gone.

Keep talking, all of you. I want to know what you really think. Why are people trying to shut Clinton up? It's time we found out who he really is.
Posted by: Anisa Rhys-Jones | Jan 28, 2008 3:10:23 PM
Don't shut up Bill! The more you run your mouth the more your other half loses, keep it up.
Posted by: Lynn Brant | Jan 28, 2008 3:12:01 PM
Why don't all 3 of them shut up? They say what they need to suit their agendas. Like Al and Jesse have never made race an issue? Give me a break. That's how they make their living, lies and exploitation. And what's with Jesse cautioning Bill to "take things to a higher ground"? This from a reverend who isn't even ordained? Who had a child outside of marriage? Who says mean, spiteful things about white people? Please. Write about something serious and relevant.

Keep talking Bill!
Posted by: Nick | Jan 28, 2008 3:12:51 PM
Look, Obama's is disparate when you get a former murderer to endorse you. Teddy Kennedy. This is a habit of his. Can someone say Oprah, Then Kerry, now Kennedy. He complains...then says it's about race, then when it gets hot, he runs away. I hope Hillary pulls this out b/c I am realizing that some the Dem. Senators are REALLY REALLY JEALOUS OF THE CLINTONS.

if hillary can't keep bill from running his yap during the campaign, what can we expect if she is president?
drama

Myself and all my Republican allies are thoroughly enjoying the ongoing meltdown in the Democratic party. How rewarding it is to see the irony of the current situation. The race baiting Democratic party being eaten by their own, DELICIOUS.
Posted by: Marty Kuhlmann | Jan 28, 2008 3:14:58 PM
It's amazing to see democrats turn on the Clintons and dump on them en-mass. These are the same Clintons that the Democrats were fawning all over for a decade. The Clintons are behaving like they ALWAYS behaved. They've not changed. So why Democrats SUDDENLY can't tolerate them? Is it because the Clinton's sleeze has now been directed at other Democrats.
The lesson we can gather from this is this: Democrats are quite comfortable with sleeze, just as long as the sleeze is directed at Republicans.
Posted by: Darryl | Jan 28, 2008 3:15:07 PM
This is such bull. Clinton points out Obama's lies and is suddenly a racist. Name one thing Bill Clinton has done to make this campaign about race. The answer is nothing. It's Obama's campaign that is pretending that legitimate criticisms are racial, rather than practical.
Posted by: Chris | Jan 28, 2008 3:15:12 PM
Bill Clinton is a has-been who is ruinng his wife's chances at becoming the next President. That reprobate, skirt chasing Clinton needs to "shut-up" if he wants Hillary to have a decent shot at the Whitehouse.

Relax people. Obama doesn't have a chance of becoming President.

I voted for Bill Clinton twice. For some reason,I never noticed how undermining he could be in order to acheive his goal. Has anyone question the Clintons regarding those skeletons in their closet? Has anyone question how he can be a co-partner with Hillary considering he was disbarred and left the office not as an honest person. He strove to lie, cheat and make lots of money from his White House years. I am concerned because I feel that this is only going a history making event, only to benefit the Clintons and not being concerned about us.

Thank you Al! I wouldve voted for you in 04 if I were old enough since Dean dropped out.
Posted by: James | Jan 28, 2008 3:21:49 PM
If anyone can recognize race baiting, its Sharpton. Its fun to watch the democrats turn on their own offspring. Funny Clinton's lies didn't seem to matter too much when the subject was republicans...the distortion and outright falsehoods were applauded by folks such as Sharpton, Kennedy etc.
Welcome to the party Obama, although with the Clintons, it started in 1992
Posted by: nmh | Jan 28, 2008 3:21:52 PM
The "First Black President" being told to shut up. Wow, how fast they turn on each other.
Where is the unity, where is the love?
Oh, I forgot, politicians will say and do anything to get elected. Even if it is for the office of First Lady!
Posted by: webo | Jan 28, 2008 3:22:02 PM
Finally, what we've known about the Democrat party all along, they focus on RACE on nearly every issue. Chickens do come home to roost!
Posted by: Arcy | Jan 28, 2008 3:23:07 PM
I hate Al Sharpton with an unwaivering passion. The man lives off of the race issue, and in doing so only KEEPS that wedge between white and black in place. If Al Sharpton didn't exist, our society would be a lot closer to being colorblind, and race wouldn't be a big issue. BUT, that would leave the racist prick w/o a job or purpose in life.
I'm out.
Posted by: Jeff | Jan 28, 2008 3:23:18 PM
Finally! All of you libs get to see what everyone else has known for years! The Clintons dont love one another, they love power! They will do anything, say anything and lie to EVERYONE to get what they want! Welcome to the Democratic Party 2008! Home of class warfare, race baiting and outright lying since 1992! Sorry Al, tell the rest of the rhyming reverends that Bill Clinton cant stop himself because, after all, it's all about him! The further he goes, the better for Obama...Which means good news for all of us evil white guys! BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
Posted by: JD | Jan 28, 2008 3:23:37 PM
Let me get this straight, 78% of blacks in SC supported Obama and 78% of white supported Clinton and Edwards, but race isn't an issue? Not talking about race won't make it go away. Both Obama and Hillary have used race in a divisive way but Obama has just be smoother than the clumsy Bill Clinton.

For a change Rev Sharpton said something useful.
I do not want Hillary to become president because of what the "first husband" could potentially do to our country.
Imagine the spouse of the president being arrested and tried for committing serious sexual crimes. He's done it before, he'll do it again.
In this case, Rev S, let Bill run off at the mouth so that Hillary loses.

Pardon the expression, but is this not "The Pot Calling the Kettle Black."
Posted by: Bob | Jan 28, 2008 3:26:26 PM
That's exacly what we deserve. One one side, a race of socialists focusing on race and gender, both eager to take their socialists to the white house and run the middle class to the ground. On the other side, a race of liberal Republicans. There is no difference between the parties, wake up idiots.
It is time we keep them out of the White House and elect the only candidate who wants YOU to keep your OWN money in your paycheck. I think you know who is the only candidate who wants you to keep your own money, right?

"...In his remarks, Sen. Kennedy sought one by one to rebut many of the arguments leveled by Obama's critics.
"From the beginning, he opposed the war in Iraq. And let no one deny that truth," he said, an obvious reference to former President Clinton's statement that Obama's early anti-war stance was a "fairy tale."
"With Barack Obama, we will turn the page on the old politics of misrepresentation and distortion.
"With Barack Obama we will close the book on the old politics of race against race, gender against gender, ethnic group against ethnic group, and straight against gay," Kennedy said..."
Them IS gotta hurt!
Without missing a beat though, Billary resorts to more Bush bashing today.
The last vestige of liberal political cowardice, to be sure.

Maybe I'm being cynical. Maybe I'm being paranoid. But, has it crossed your mind that Bill doesn't want Hill to win?? That would mean sharing the spotlight and I don't think that sits well with him. Why in the world would he say the things he says? He may be a lot of things, but he's not an idiot. A blowhard, pompous, lying, cheating speck of a man, but not an idiot.

Are we ready to give the smooth-talking stranger anything he wants even if
it means throwing some old friends under the bus. That makes no sense to me.
People see themselves in Obama, they love him, they need him, they can't
live without him but they can't explain why - they just want somebody to love.
Is there any room for logic here?
We're about to give someone unlimited power - should it be an unknown?
Besides his claim that he's always been against the war, who is Obama?
Why did Obama get your vote and not Dennis Kucinich or John Edwards,
two people about whom we know so much more than the new guy?
I have nothing against Obama - how could I? I don't know him.

Posted by: David Scott | Jan 28, 2008 3:29:27 PM
We all know that this is Hillary's use of her husband's I Owe You for Monica. Back in the day, when Hill would try to communize health care, Bill would say that he has no control over what his wife believes and never outright supported her. Knowing when to hold'em, fold'em, or walk away in a situation is what made him so liked personally and professionally but now he is quickly tarnishing his image as another whiny Democrat.

It's amazing to see the democrats dumping on the Clinton gang after years of being the chief apologists. It is so nice to hear a Reverend, a person of the cloth, telling a former President of the United States to “SHUT UP”. I wish that I could send my kids to hear this Reverend speak. That’s right, I’m, white and they will not let my kind into their Church.
Him and Jackson talk out of both sides of their mouths. I wish they all would go away.

Biden and Clinton need to invent a new language that does not include the terms 'clean,' 'articluate,' 'risky,' 'roll of the dice,' etc. If you think Bill Clinton is a racist, I have a bridge to sell you in Brooklyn.
Posted by: BMurphyNYC | Jan 28, 2008 3:38:18 PM
The Clinton's are in free fall, they have overestimated their own organization, and underestimated how much the majority of the nation wants them to go away. The very strength of in fighting abilities is now their major weakness. The days of doing naything to seize power to be elected are over. Members in the Democratic Party have united against them, and this is just a start of ending their reign of misinformations, innuendos, and outright lies in the face of change for the better. Put a fork in her, she is done, and continued in fighting will drive her and her husband and her daughter to the sidelines of busted candidacies forever more. They have been putting themselves ahead of the Party, Country and Policies of healing for the the better. Now they renegd on the Florida Pledge showing no word or deed can be conuted on, if they need it to win above all other cost? In the end, they did it to themselves!

I don't always agree with Sharpton, but he is right in this situation. Bill Clinton should not be engaging in dirty politics just to get his wife elected.
It makes the Democratic Party look divided, it lowers the whole tone of the campaign and makes everyone wonder why Hillary feels running on the issues isn't enough for her to win.
Decide with logic, folks. Read each candidates website under 'issues' where they outline specifically where they stand and what they'll do about problems in this country on a whole range of issues. Don't let sound bytes or media coverage of trivialities decide for you. (And if you click on Obama's site you don't have to register to get to the main page, just click on the quote at the top about having hope for real change in Washington.)

Yes, it is so delightful to watch this meltdown. The clintons were the darling of the media since they came on the scene in the early 90's. What a coincidence it is that now all this hatred leveled against them. The media is running obama's election. they are terrified that if hillary gets the nomination, the republicans will gain the white house. A few months ago when it didn't look like obama would go anywhere the clintons could walk on water, ESPECIALLY Bill. But now, oh what a difference. But the funny thing is, the conservatives are not calling it because they love to see the clintons get what they never got before in the press. A critical look at them. But they don't seem to realize either that all this bashing from the media will backfire. i never liked hillary and even i feel sorry for her. Already the pictures of obama and teddy are all over the internet. Getting an endorsement from someone that let a woman sink to the bottom of a lake in your car and go back to your hotel and sleep, how can obama not win the nomination?

Yeah, I've had the same thoughts, starting in the month lead-up to Iowa when Bill started this loose cannon thing. Clearly he's said things that haven't sat well with her campaign's messages.
The theory would be that as such an accomplished politician, he certainly knows better.
Take the other day. Bill was asked what his and Hillary's double-teaming Obama. Completely unprompted, he responds that Jesse Jackson won South Carolina, too. And that after a couple weeks of arguing over who inserted race into the race. Seems odd that a thing like that could just slip out.

Speaking of shutting up, I like how Ted "Subtle As Chappaquiddick" tossed in today how a "former Democratic President" told his brother John to wait his turn, but he told Harry Truman it was time for a new generation of leadership. Yikes, does he mean that the CURRENT "former Democratic President" should...um...SHUT UP???? I'm like former secretary of educatin Bill Bennett who said over the weekend, "IU wis the Clintons would just go away." And maybe have Teddy drive them.

This whole thing is ridiculous. You have Hillary who has to "find her voice." How old is she anyway? Why did it take 50+ years to find her voice? Was her voice gone when her husband cheated on her? Then you have Bill who says what has to be one of the most racist thigns you can say about Jackson. He's an idiot and will say anything to save his crumbling "empire." Then there's Chelsea, who I'm sure is a nice person and is stuck between these two, but goes out on the campaign and then denies a 9 year old's questions because the little girl is a "reporter" and she doesn't do interviews. What??? And finally Al Sharpton, who to date, may be the biggest bigot of them all. Not to mention Ted Kennedy, who is a joke and only has his job because of his last name. It is SO comical. It's like a bad Democrat soap opera. Let's get out the popcorn and watch.

AFTER THE PEOPLE THE GOOD REV. SHARPTON "LEADS" SPEAK OUT BY GIVING OBAMA THEIR VOTE, NOW BIG AL JUMPS IN AND SAYS,"YEA, ME TOO". CHUMP.

Newzaroo - 325,161 GOP primary voters in Florida requested absentee ballots. I wonder how many of them already voted and for who?

geevill, no he wasn't.
On January 26, 2008, former President Clinton’s statement has caused most people to believe that Jesse Jackson won presidential primaries in South Carolina in those years. Actually there were no Democratic presidential primaries in South Carolina in either of those years. Jackson’s success in that state was in caucuses (Jackson was born in South Carolina).

Time for Hillary to either divorce Bill or just get out - she doesn't have a rat's chance of winning anything, except NY as a senator. Thank heaven So. Carolinians said it best, go Obama, GO !!!
