Spin Room Paul Says Talk of Inflation Is a "Bold Step" for Other Candidates
January 05, 2008 11:12 PM
ABC's Z. Byron Wolf reports: Ron Paul was the only Republican debate participant to personally grace the spin room at the ABC News / Facebook / WMUR debate (at least when this reporter was present). As such, he was mobbed by reporters and TV cameras, still photographers and radio microphones.
He seemed to relish the attention, and said, if nothing else, he has brought the field incrementally toward his way of thinking in some important respects.
"If you listen carefully, you hear some of the language out there of some of the things I have been talking about," Paul said. A reporter asked him about the sniggers that seemed to bubble up around him from other candidates during the debate, when he talked about the gold standard.
"Well, I have a little more educating to do on that," Paul said. "They talk now about inflation. That was a great step, but they have to understand that it is the falling dollar that is the inflation. So, they've taken one bold step, and I think they're understanding that better," he argued. "But the American people understand it, the crowds I talk to understand it, but you have to go back to what I said about [how] the price of oil is steady in the last ten years, in terms of gold, and if gold were money, the price would not have gone up."
Despite any baby steps Paul sees in campaign rhetoric, there remain enormous differences between his pure, libertarian-style Republicanism, and every other candidate.
"It's not me being disconnected from our colleagues as much as it is them being disconnected from our platform," he said, starting to spin (metaphorically).
One thing he does not have to spin is how long he can stay In the race.
"I am in it as long as my supporters want me to be in it, and they finance the campaign, and they do that all spontaneously," he said, not overtly mentioning the $20 million his supporters donated in the final quarter of 2007, but making it clear he has political capital in a very literal sense.
"Their enthusiasm is growing every day, so now we just have to get FOX to let me in their debate so I can get that message out," he said, overtly alluding to a FOX News forum to be held here in New Hampshire tomorrow. Paul has been excluded for not polling at 10 percent support among Republicans, nationally.
Instead, he'll pay to produce a live town hall meeting of his own on public access in New Hampshire and the Internet worldwide.

Go get them Ron Paul. He is about as smart as they come. And that is so wanderful especially after the last seven years. I would love to see Ron Paul debate G. W. Bush.

Hahaha Ron is the man He made them all look like idiots when they talked about inflation. We will never support those corporate bought pigs. It does not take much intelligence to figure out the price of gold stays at a constant level and You can measure the strength of the dollar in reference to the price of gold. Notice how the other republicans tried to say the price of gas was due to supply and demand while Paul pulled out real numbers to support his arguement. There is only one economist running and the is Ron Paul and guess what there is only one doctor running also.

Thank you for this most wonderful commentary. Ron Paul has got me so interested in Jefforson and Madisin aslo economics.. I have been just eating it up.. I truely have awakend and because of this my friend Dave is doing the same.. we are reading as much about these topics as possable..
Today I was reading about Jefferson and relized that Paul is a lot like him in theory. And the Other republicans are kind of like Corporate Fedralists. Anyay thanks again.

The snickering heard tonight when Ron Paul spoke on our foreign policy of intervention were the result of the "IGNORANCE" on the part of the other debate participants.. period!
The CIA in a press conference last month acknowledged that Ron Paul was the ONLY Presidential Candidate who got it right when it came to the reasoning for the US to be the target for attacks from "extremist". They attack us because we are "Free", Yeah Right! !
Senator Thompson's lack of under-standing on the causes of inflation by the Federal Reserve's over printing of dollars, relative to their value, only showed his and the other candidates lack of understanding on that subject. A subject that continues to be misunderstood by most and ignored (at our peril) by the rest of the canditates. It's about the CONSTITUTION ! ! !

Ron Paul all the way!
Give me liberty or give me death.

In terms of substantive content, Ron Paul blew away the other candidates, no question. While the others argue the same old tired rhetoric, Ron Paul gets to the root of our many problems. We could bring our troops home from Iraq and secure our borders in a matter of months and use the money we'd save to really do something about our health care issue. Inflation is largely the cause of rising oil prices ... that and the fact that we are invading and threatening to invade some of the primary oil producing nations. The other candidates snicker because they don't even get it.

I too noticed that the other candidates are suddenly starting to *steal* some of Ron Paul's ideas and language. It makes me angry but I suppose it's a good thing overall. I just hope the american people can see through the bad politics going on and cast their vote for Ron Paul!

Oh yes...and the snickering from other candidates when Ron Paul speaks is childish and manipulative. Dr. Paul deserves more respect than anyone else on that stage.

For educated people watching this debate, the only candidate worth backing is Ron Paul. Terrorism is nothing compared to what runaway Inflation will do to this country. The Western Roman Empire crumbled not becuase of barbarians but becuase of rampant and ongoing inflation. People need to realize this fact and understand that history repeats itself.

GO RON PAUL! the only candidate who is smart about what's going on in this country. His answers were intelligent. He did an excellent job tonight!
My vote goes to Ron Paul!

Is this real? Let me pinch myself. This is the first post-debate ABC coverage I've seen of Ron Paul.

I hate to say it but Ron Paul needs to start attacking the other Repubican candidates. The candidates have lost all sense of what a debate really is about. Therefore, dare I say, Ron Paul must also lower himself to their level or his message will never stick. Tonight these candidates were suppose to exchange ideas. Instead every candidate besides Ron Paul just attacked one another. Ron Paul has to start belittling all the other Republican candidates on how uneducated they really are in regards to foreign policy and monetary policy. Americans have to realize how stupid the other candidates really are.

All I have to say is canvass, become a delete, vote, tell everbody about what you know.
It's our future and we cannot be idle.
Posted by: mike | Jan 6, 2008 1:15:29 AM
Ron Paul is the only candidate for REAL change. He is also the only candidate who takes his oath of office seriously. The rest would just mouth the words and continue with business as usual.

At last a U.S. Presidential candidate who has integrity as opposed to a large dollop of narcissism. I'm part of that odd population called "the rest of the world"(New Zealand) What Ron Paul says is what the "rest of the world" has been aware of for years.
Guess who we're frightened of? You got it ...the Americans!!! Wake up America. i've got a grandchild i want a future for!

All the laughing and snickering by the other candidates directed toward Paul while he was speaking really turned me off from the others. While it was going on i was wondering if they really think the issues being discussed are FUNNY to them. I guess the rest of the candidates think they can LAUGH theirselves all the way to the White House.

I'm not a Republican anymore...I'm a Re-Paul-ican!

Ron Paul really deserves his own miniseries as his platform is deep, deep, deep, and does not play well in the shallow water of these debates, which is a shame. Nonetheless, he scored some great points tonight, and chief among these was his explanation of fuel prices that left poor Fred as stunned as a sledgehammered ox.
This inflation is brought to you courtesy of the Federal Reserve, a privately owned (nobody's exactly sure by whom) banking group. The Fed gleefully prints money as fast as the politicians are willing to spend it, and charges interest on it, to boot. Because of imports of oil and consumer goods, these dollars have been spread all over the globe. This was good for many years as the dollar became the preeminent world currency. Unfortunately, the world is now saturated with greenbacks and the printing press is now causing old-fashioned inflation.
Every time the Fed creates money, it takes away from the value of your savings, and your paycheck. It is a form of taxation because it takes away from you and gives to the federal government. And what's worse, it has to be paid back to the Fed some day.
So, the "richest and most powerful nation on earth" can afford ANYTHING. An expensive war against an ill-defined enemy? Go for it! Free health care? Why not? Let's have another drink and keep on dancing. Truly, our leaders are as irresponsible as a high school kid with a $20,000 MasterCard. We MUST listen to what Ron Paul is trying to tell us.
If we don't elect him, we don't deserve him. It's that simple.
