Spin Room Paul Says Talk of Inflation Is a "Bold Step" for Other Candidates

ABC's Z. Byron Wolf reports: Ron Paul was the only Republican debate participant to personally grace the spin room at the ABC News / Facebook / WMUR debate (at least when this reporter was present). As such, he was mobbed by reporters and TV cameras, still photographers and radio microphones.

He seemed to relish the attention, and said, if nothing else, he has brought the field incrementally toward his way of thinking in some important respects.

"If you listen carefully, you hear some of the language out there of some of the things I have been talking about," Paul said. A reporter asked him about the sniggers that seemed to bubble up around him from other candidates during the debate, when he talked about the gold standard.

"Well, I have a little more educating to do on that," Paul said. "They talk now about inflation. That was a great step, but they have to understand that it is the falling dollar that is the inflation. So, they've taken one bold step, and I think they're understanding that better," he argued. "But the American people understand it, the crowds I talk to understand it, but you have to go back to what I said about [how] the price of oil is steady in the last ten years, in terms of gold, and if gold were money, the price would not have gone up."

Despite any baby steps Paul sees in campaign rhetoric, there remain enormous differences between his pure, libertarian-style Republicanism, and every other candidate.

"It's not me being disconnected from our colleagues as much as it is them being disconnected from our platform," he said, starting to spin (metaphorically).

One thing he does not have to spin is how long he can stay In the race.

"I am in it as long as my supporters want me to be in it, and they finance the campaign, and they do that all spontaneously," he said, not overtly mentioning the $20 million his supporters donated in the final quarter of 2007, but making it clear he has political capital in a very literal sense.

"Their enthusiasm is growing every day, so now we just have to get FOX to let me in their debate so I can get that message out," he said, overtly alluding to a FOX News forum to be held here in New Hampshire tomorrow. Paul has been excluded for not polling at 10 percent support among Republicans, nationally.

Instead, he'll pay to produce a live town hall meeting of his own on public access in New Hampshire and the Internet worldwide.

Charlie: goes down the line of candidates and has critizism for each about flip-flopping and inconsistancy. Then he comes to Ron Paul and says "Your party changed, not you". Another great moment Charlie: Asks any candidate to truthfully tell the American people why we are in this mess.Pause...pause...First to raise hie hand and tight camera shot RON PAUL lays down the law and nobody can rebut it. Ron "Sure you all talk about the constitution but we have not follwed it since Korea" thus our foriegn policy mess. nuff said, the man is a prophet.

What a debate!! Ron Paul is way to smart to compete with the other fools.Poor Mr. Fred, too ignorant to know what our fake money is all about. How low and childish of them to snicker at Mr. Ron Paul. If we want our great country back, our only hope is Ron Paul. I homeschool my children and over my dead body would they ever attend a corrupt, brained washed, government, public school.

THANK YOU RON PAUL!! RON PAUL NEEDS TO HAVE A DOMESTIC TV AD THAT SAYS: AMERICA IF YOU WANT REAL CHANGE IN EVERY RESPECT AND WANT TO GET BACK TO THE CONSTITUTION and LIFE, LOVE AND THE PURSUIT OF HAPPINESS THEN VOTE RON PAUL. SPREAD THE WORD, ESPECIALLY TO ALL THE STATES WHO HAVE THEIR PRIMARY ON FEB 5th.

Ron Paul sees the CAUSE of many of our nations problems and tells the public what they are. Other candidates confuse issues by looking at EFFECTS rather than CAUSES. To fix almost any issue you have to go after the CAUSE of it.

I wonder what is actually going through the other candidates minds...
How can they actually think they can win the presidency with the type of foreign policies they have??
Sure they just might get the parties bid to run but let's be realistic here. 70 percent of the voters they need are against their foreign policies and America's foreign policy is a big subject in the upcoming election.

If you love Ron Paul like I do then you know Ron Paul's views on Gold and Monetary Policy. You also know we need to raise more money for Ron Paul. We need another Money Bomb in January especially before the 5th of February.

I see one key date coming in the next few weeks that is our obvious candidate just as Ron Paul is our most obvious candidate. January 24th, according to http://americanhistory.about.com/od/todayinamericanhistory/p/th_0124x.htm, James Marshall discovered Gold in California, thus starting the California Gold Rush.

Americans have stated that the topic they want more politicians to talk about is the Economy. Who better to do that than Dr. Paul, the only candidate with a real viable plan based on the constitution and basic economic principles. I have a degree in Economics, so I find myself qualified to endorse Dr. Paul on this one.

Just like James Marshall discovering Gold; I think all of us who support Ron Paul feel that we have struck the proverbial "Gold" with Ron Paul. Amongst all the candidates Ron Paul continues to shine through consistent, polished and respectful of what it means to be the President of the United States.

Spread the word in everyway possible for January 24th, the third and most critical money bomb to date. January 24th, "The Ron Paul Gold Rush."

The goal, the biggest in history, 15 million in one day. 150,000 people giving 100$. We can do this we can shatter the records, we can shatter the stranglehold this government and media has on this nation. Spread the words of Freedom and Liberty!!!

Lets mark January 24th as a new story in American History, "The Ron Paul Gold Rush." The day America changed the landscape of its politcs back towards the Consititution.

Thank you.

thanks for some honest coverage, I am glad people are starting to see how Dr. Paul makes the other candidates look like 3 graders on every stance.

All the economic indicators are looking very grim and many economists are stating we will be in a full recession starting in 2009 as the downturn has begun in earnest. Ron Paul is the only candidate from either party with the expertise of how deeply monetary policy affects a wide range of our nations ills and his explanation of this in tonights debate was honest and brilliant. This man absolutely needs to be our President as his grasp of the issues is second to none!

Thank You ABC for honest and balanced reporting of the ongoing caucus nationwide. The candidate that has given us straight answers to the questions at hand, have been Ron Paul. I really feel good to be an American, again.

This may just be THE most important presidential election in the history of our great country.

From the FaceBook polls tonight.

Which Republican candidate appeared the most "Presidential" during the debate?

Ron Paul 41%

Do we need to maintain high troop levels in Iraq until they have a stable, effective government?

No (Ron Paul is the only Republican who thinks this...) 63%

Has the War on Terror made America more or less safe from terrorist attack?

America is less safe 55%

What should happen to U.S. troop levels in Iraq?

Withdraw troops as fast as possible starting now 46%

Ron Paul won this debate.

To be fair & balanced.
He disagrees with the polls regarding:
* Most want government-sponsored universal health care. (He has the only correct health care answer and it involves the government getting completely out of health care except for veterans.)
* Most want more gun controls. (Ron Paul would like to remove some existing controls, since areas with armed citizens have less crime and violence.)

May the LORD grant us a leader in Ron Paul! May HE have mercy on this nation of ours and spare us from the peril that is due us all for our disobedience. If Ron Paul does not get elected, you can know that judgment is coming to this nation. We need to be on our knees praying that the Lord would have mercy on us all and grant us an ABLE leader like Ron Paul.

Psalm 50:22

Ron Paul is right on some issues, but his idea of limited government is out of place now. He might be the man for the job though since he would veto pork that the two parties try get. Also with him as president, a viable third party might emerge that would break the duopoly currently in place.

Paul was certainly that most specifics oriented candidate (both Dem and Rep). He is a rarity amongst the current Republican crop in that he is a pragmatist and constitutionalist. Dr. Paul does not use nationalism as a tool for manipulation, and has the audacity to appeal to the conscience of the constituency with the use of historical precedent. Curiously, I'm opposed to his domestic agenda, but seduced by his courage and character.

Excluding Ron Paul, all of the GOP candidates are "backbenchers", witness the low turn-out of GOP voters in the Iowa caucus. Even the second tier of the Democratic Party's candidates could win against the weak choices on the Republican's slate.

I'm sure that while the other candidates are sneering and snickering at Ron Paul they're also wondering what catch phrases they can steal from him to boost their own campaigns.

Of course Dr. Paul is aware that some of his phrases and ideas have already been lifted from him by the other candidates. But he's too much of a kind and decent gentlemen to level any overt accusations of blatant plagiarism (and there have certainly been some).

In all my life I've never seen someone inspire such fiercely loyal and dedicated supporters as Ron Paul has and the momentum is still snowballing. He's miles above the other candidates in intellect, honesty and knowledge of economics, health care and foreign policy.

He is a true original. As has been predicted elsewhere, he will be the last man standing when everyone else has fallen by the wayside, tripped up by their own doublespeak and skeletons.

Oh, like I said, I kinda like Ron Paul, but some of you guys like him a little too much. That scares me.

Posted by: John Tighe | Jan 6, 2008 4:32:33 AM

The political season started early this time around, I had a feeling it would be scrappy, the democrats wanted blood and the republicans seemed uninterested and uninteresting, I felt that this time around there would be a big fight, I had been getting the feeling that the elections are seeming to be more and more rigged, with both sides just tag teaming Americans for the corporate buck, feeling smaller and like there was nothing to be done, I perused the republican candidates, seeing none really interesting, I thought Thompson would make a good one, Romney was seeming kinda interesting, but Giuliani and McCain were to much for war, being tired of war and wanting a quiet break I looked deeper into the field, the democrats had a guy that seemed interesting this Obama guy, a short timer senator who kinda seemed a little fake but likable, anybody but Hillary right, there were a few guys down the way that had little chance of getting in but had some good ideas, some guy talking about the constitution and some other guy blabbering about some other stuff, but the constitution guy got my attention, but he had little coverage and the media was trying hard to focus on the guys they wanted in, the fourth branch of government the media was pushing harder and harder for their corporate sponsors, the big money was running the world through their corporate fronts, buying the politicians like cakes in a bakery, if the cake didn’t vote the way they wanted they pulled the money, a good reason to do as your told right. It really was time for a change, if it wasn’t too late, never give up hope as long as you have a breath to live.
Ron Paul was chattering on about his political views and so I went to his web site, which seemed kind of plain so me I didn’t go much farther with it, till later when he wouldn’t go away so I went back to his web site, still the same, but now I went a little further and found the
Ron Paul forum site, and started to learn more, I started making a few posts and commenting at the site, now I’m hooked.
There isn’t much time left, the storm troopers are at the gates, we must act now to save freedom, to save our future..
Ron Paul an American modeled after our founders..

What to say about our humble Dr.Paul. You good folks have already said it. Lets hear some more of Dr.Paul's wisdom and straight talk in a very non Fox style interview.

I would also like to thank ABC News for including this comment section.

If we don't elect him, we don't deserve him. It's that simple.

It cannot be said any clearer.
