Prior to Final Results, Thompson Leaves S.C.
January 19, 2008 8:26 PM
ABC News' Christine Byun reports: Prior to the final South Carolina primary results being announced, Republican presidential candidate Fred Thompson is heading home to Virginia.
At 7:55 p.m., Eastern time, the former Tennessee senator addressed his supporters and staffers at an election night gathering in Columbia, S.C.
"My friends, we will always be bound by a close bond ... It's never been about me, it's never been about you, it's about our country," Thompson told the crowd.
After speaking for about 10 minutes, Thompson left his election night party, and is planning on flying home tonight to Virginia. A campaign spokesman said their status is "fluid," and they will evaluate their situation, based on final results.
Thompson -- who has campaigned here nearly every day for the past two weeks -- has banked on a win in South Carolina to propel him forward in the race.
From an auditorium at the University of South Carolina, Thompson thanked his wife, Jeri, for being his "strong right arm." Thompson also thanked his 88-year-old mother, who, he said, was in a Tennessee hospital, recuperating from an illness.

Fred Thompson started too late. It was a bad choice not to start at the beginning.I think Rudy Giuliani made a bad decision by waiting until Florida. We shall see.

The idea that Fred "started too late" so he can't win is absolutely sophistry.
Huckabee has been tripping over himself consistently since Iowa. Eventually, McCain's record will slap him in the face.
The field's still open. Don't count Fred out.

"Fred Go Away", we don't need a Nixon Watergate mole in the White House!
We've had enough of lawyers finding ways for the executive branch to break the laws, and abandoning the Constitution!!! Fred's just another party HACK!!!

FRED IS ALIVE AND WELL!
OUR GENERATION DOESN'T GIVE UP EASILY.
HAIL TO THE CHIEF!

Hey Andrew...what a sad comment. How can you judge someone like that? Are you so pure yourself? I hope you were joking about Fred. And if you are supporting another candidate...shame on you for attacking someone with insensitive words...oh dear who is the HACK now? I believe all the candidates have their good points. But from what I have researched on my own I believe Fred Thompson has got the whole package. He is strong on all points conservative wise. Fred don't give up until God says it's over. I am praying for you. Prove yourself to the light of the world that you are the one to be the President of the United States. I feel like the other candidates are hiding their records or flip-flopping. Come out into the open I say! God bless America

Nothing to say to Fred and his presidential ambitions in 2008.

That really shows alot of class. Somewhat like the class Huckabee has been showing by his jokes. Fred Thompson deals with the issues-some people just seem to be ignorant. If people really cared about the future of this nation they would be supporting Fred Thompson. It shows how disrespectful this race has become, mostly inpart by the jokes of Huckabee, who can't stand on his record, he has to make jokes.
