Thompson Jumps Ahead to South Carolina
January 08, 2008 11:27 AM
ABC News' Christine Byun Reports: While all other campaigns are huddled in New Hampshire, Republican candidate Fred Thompson got a much-needed head start in the battle for South Carolina.
"Everyone is in New Hampshire … [we're] not playing up there," Thompson told a crowd of about 100 people at a diner in Greenville, S.C. "Still got snow banks six feet high there and we're down here in South Carolina, so I ask you who’s the smartest one?"
For the former Tennessee senator, the upcoming January 19th primary will be crucial. A senior campaign advisor says they will have to win South Carolina, or come in a very "strong" second, to continue his bid for the GOP presidential nomination. Thompson's campaign will focus all its efforts in the Palmetto State for the next week and a half. Thompson’s wife, Jeri, is also campaigning today throughout the state.
At his morning event, he played up his Southern roots, joking "people can understand what I'm saying down here." Thompson – who once had enjoyed an edge in South Carolina – munched on a sausage biscuit while speaking of his humble beginnings as a small-town boy from Tennessee, whose "daddy" worked for those candidates' who speak of growing up with “poor daddies."
A father of two young children, Thompson mentioned his "two latest, greatest blessings" and how "somewhere, [late South Carolina Senator] Strom Thurmond is looking down smiling."
Thompson continued to tout his message of "consistency." He commented that some of his opponents "are wearing the road to Damascus out" with their "conversions" to issues like illegal immigration. Thompson said he chose "truth" over the theme of "change," which has become the messages of many campaigns.
"The biggest change would be if politicians quit talkin' about change," Thompson said. "Change to what? Change from what? … What do we want to change to – higher taxes and all of that? Like I said, the real change would be speaking the truth to the American people."
The audience pelted him with questions about international and national security. One man, who said he felt Thompson's campaign suffered from a "blackout" of coverage from national media outlets, asked him how Thompson could get more "mainstream media" coverage.
Thompson nodded and smiled, answering, "Win South Carolina."

I like Fred. I just wish he had a bit more "juice." Actually, I feel a little schizophrenic here: on one hand I'm sick of the Energizer bunny candidates that never stop Type-A-ing all over the place, and on the other I wish Fred shared a little of their passion.
Oh well, I guess you can't have everything.

I like Fred too and he is my second choice. Hopefully I hope I won't have to go with my second choice...
Go McCain!!!

Sen. Fred Thompson has my Vote! He is truthful, credible, and an authentic conservative... to his core!
This consistent conservatism will be needed to challenge the Democrats in the general election ON THE ISSUES. Otherwise, the election will be based upon "what you did while Governor is different then you say now... Please explain."
Additionally, Sen. Thompson is able to bring consensus to the Reagan coalition - not all of the Republicans can.
For me... Character matters. Principle matters. And Fred is Right on both!

Royce,
It's good that you oppose the liberal tendencies of some of the GOP candidates. That, however, is more reason you should support Fred. Huck is no conservative - he just happens to be pro-life and anti-gay marriage. Other than that, he is actually frighteningly liberal, and the worst part is that he has somehow fooled people into believing he is a conservative.
What we need is a real conservative, and Fred is the only one running. Huck is actually my last choice, except for maybe Ron Paul, specifically because of how liberal he is. Fred is the closest our party has seen to Reagan since Reagan himself. He hasn't flip flopped and there are no exceptions to his conservatism.
I hope the conservatives out there will take a stand for Fred, because if we could somehow muster up enough support for him, I know he'd have the best shot in the general election - it's just the primaries that is the problem. Let's help him get to the GE!

I agree that Fred Thompson doesn't show the same enthusiasm as other candidates. That is one of the reasons that I like him so well.
We have the same old "politicians" running year after year, and most of us complain that we need someone that's different. When we get him, we wonder why he doesn't behave in the same manner as everyone else does.
Fred Thompson has my definite vote. He thinks for himself and behaves like himself. He doesn't put on a show just to get elected.

Huckabee was the only one in the last debate to mention the Second Amendment, that gets him a few points. He lost them with his desire to educate illegal aliens rather than Americans. Asa Hutchinson ran for Governor of Arkansas last year. He didn’t loose the election on his platform, gave it away by not letting the people know what his platform was. Fred has a great platform and good positions. I can’t find a lot to oppose about him. He needs to let people know where he stands on issues. Standing in the shadows like wall paper isn’t getting him any votes. He opposes amnesty for illegal aliens, favors deportation and supports a closed border . He opposes gun control and wants to finish what is started in the Mid-east. Great platform! He needs to jump in the debates and let people know where he stands. If he can wake up long enough to actually run for office, I’ll support him.

You want change?
Let's change back to True Conservatism as espoused by Fred Thompson.
I'm sick and tired of the Bleeding Heart Conservatism of McHuckalani. I want an adult who can address problems from a true conservative perspective. I want someone who recognizes that America's greatest resource is its citizens not it's politicians.
I want Fred Thompson for President.

I'm with Fred 100%. As for the "lack of fire in the belly", that's a good thing. Everybody remembers the Dean Scream, right?
Posted by: Kevin | Jan 8, 2008 3:20:01 PM
Whomever it was that said that Huck was the only candidate that mentioned the 2cd ammendment is incorrect. NEVER does Fred not mention that as being central to his campaign.
People, please think long and hard about your vote. Don't vote for the candidate that looks and acts the part. Vote for the person who you would most like to be sitting across a table from the leaders of the world representing our great country.
When I think of it this way, I LOVE the idea of having Fred. This is a real opportunity for the people to take the country back to a place where family values and conservative principles were what guided us.
Don't be fooled by the silly term "change." What we need is leadership.
Rhetoric is just that. We have to move forward.

As a believer, I am glad the Good Lord gave me the brains to spot a conservative....
....and spot who a man talks like a conservative, but whose record in Arkansas proves to be very liberal
I have a daughter, I cannot support a man who so willingly released over 1000 felons at the drop of a hat. My job is to keep her secure....more of these creeps on the street that Mr Huckabee let loose is not helping my cause

GO FRED GOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Fred is Fred. I can't understand why everyone wants a personality that’s in your face and jumping around. All of the candidates have planned for years for this….as if they deserve it. Fred approached this as almost a calling, and after careful assessment, decided to do this for his country. You want a few Dean screams? Not happening. This fine man is so Presidential, and is overflowing with substance. I'll take that over the normal politician who is changing their stance at every state.
Please SC, pull this out for our country. Please research Huckebees and all of them and their policies and past history. His opinion on Immigration is frightening, and is so out of touch.
Thank you for your time.

As Rush said yesterday to the Huckabee supporters, "If you're looking for a real conservative, why are you supporting Huckabee? He's completely discredited himself. What about Fred Thompson, if you're looking for a real conservative?"
Forget the fire-in-the-belly nonsense, it's a media ploy to ensure a weak GOP candidate. Fred's the only true conservative in this race, and I vote on principles not political expediency.

it's incredible how shallow this presidential cycle has become. in the past, it was issues and leadership. now it's all about looking for a rock star.
my hope for us all is smarten up, get real and give Fred another look and listen.
who of all the candidates can put a scare into those who want to do us harm? and who of all of them would have the backbone to do something about it?
fred is still the man.

I too Support Fred... My Parents live in SC and they have yet decided yet who to vote for. They are worried about where the GOP is heading. That so many people are leaning more to the left and forgiving such impotant principles. I'm really ashamed of my fellow citizens that seek a fast walking, smoooth talking character for their candidate. The fact that so many people are still bying into the story that Fred is lazy or has no fire... Wake up yourselves. If you are hear reading and posting you should be able to, if you are serious about it, be able to visit www.fred08.com and radhis positions. Do the same of the other candidates. Fred is not flash, he is facts, honesty and is consistently Fred. I just hope SC's citizens are as concerned about our future as my family is. Sincerely Kent

Senator Thompson is a true conservative.
One of the things I like about him is that he is always straight forward and says what he thinks.
To those that complain about Senator Thompson not getting enough air time to explain his positions, please direct your complaints to the news media
Kent,I am sure that SC will rise to the occasion and will vote for Senator Thompson.
Keep believe in!!!!!

Fred is the man and his white papers on how he will enact policies of first principles to our nation is amazing. His tax plan, his immigration plan (currently in use in AZ and working Attrition by Enforcement), he has laid out more real effective policy than any of the other candidates. Fred is the true Conservative in this race....Go Fred Go!!!

Fred is the man for the job. He has the consistent record, he has the conservative heart and his stances on the issues that are facing The United States of America are knowledgable. Why else do all of the other candidates, at one time or another, say "I agree with Senator Thompson?" He has my family's support!
Posted by: LGrote | Jan 8, 2008 6:08:40 PM
Fred shows the same enthusiasm as George Washington. He'll take the job and do it well because it is a job that needs to be done. Anyone that is too enthusiastic about getting the job of president is probably in it for the wrong reasons and see the presidency as meeting their lifelong goal.
Fred is up to the task. He knows what is involved and he wants to rescue America from the the big spending republicans and democrats. McCain is a good guy and will probably be a great Secretary of Defense in the Thompson administration. He has co-authored too many bills with Kennedy/Fielgold, etc for me. It is one thing to reach across the isle. It is quite another to do so and partner with the most extreme elements in the other party.

I love all the comparison to Ronald Reagan. Lets see, who was the president to run up more debt than all other presidents before him combined? ......... oh, that's right, Ronald Reagan. Gee, that's the type of guy I want to vote for. Gotta love that fiscal conservatism!!
And what makes Fred so qualified? That one term senator status? Sure wasn't/isn't enough for any other candidate. And now the no flip flop, true conservative thing.... isn't Fred the guy who lobbied for a pro choice group? I guess money is more important than "true conservatism" or "conservative morals". Silly me, I almost forgot, we're talking about a republican......... and a "hollywierd elite", lawyer one at that...
Like I said before, they need to make up a new to explain you people because the word HYPOCRIT just isn't strong enough any longer.

Royce:
oh, so someone "mentions" the 2nd amendment and that makes him good? That's like RonPaul talk about the constitution. It means NOTHING. Lets stick to actual articulation please.
FRED ALL THE WAY!!!!
Posted by: Mark R | Jan 9, 2008 4:43:02 PM
I support Fred for all the above reasons.
But, I'm really frustrated he's not getting more media coverage. Praying he does well in SC to hopefully change that.
