Thompson: Leadership > Change

ABC News' Christine Byun reports: Republican candidate Fred Thompson will not be jumping on the "change bandwagon."

While candidates have embraced the theme of "change" -- some retooling their campaign message with newly-designed signs -- the former Tennessee senator said that "change" is nothing new. At Fox News' forum, Sunday night, Thompson -- who is leaving New Hampshire and will skip Tuesday's primary -- said "change has been a part of every election since the dawn of elections, if you weren't an incumbent.

"What's more important is leadership, and what is more important -- as a part of leadership -- is telling the American people the truth, and having the courage to do that," Thompson said.

Throughout the night, Thompson littered his responses with buzz words like "committed," "determined," "credibility." He did not mince with words as he mentioned the Iraq war, which he believes is "going to take more time and resources." He also spoke about having the "courage" to talk about Social Security -- "something everybody knows, but nobody wants to talk about" -- and repeated that the country would "not be energy independent in a few years, it's going to take a longer time."

I am unable to think of a more spot-on example of "no change" attitude than Fred. It's almost as if George & dicky po wrote his script for this one. I have trouble accepting the attitude of a number of the republican hopefuls who are unable to see what damage Bush and his faithful pet have done to this country.

Fred Thompson is right! Most politicians say what they believe people want to hear not what they believe. When you change a politician, which will happen since George Bush can't run, they will be change. No two politicians are alike, they will want to do his or hers own thing. Just like football, when you change the coach things change.

In response to James above:

Fred never said he was against change, he said that change is inevitable for every new president. Instead of focusing on the inevitable, he is talking about leadership and integrity and experience. A champion of true Reagon conservative values,a nd a strong honest leader. Why, even Rush Limbaugh was singing his praises this morning, though he stopped short of an endorsement. Rush does not endorse during primary season.

Fred for President in '08!

I hope the American people wake up to what Fred Thompson has been saying all along. He's not lazy, he's honest. He's not saying nor is he doing what the other candidates say and do because he wants the people to know what they're getting. Go Fred!

It about time someone had the courage to speak the TRUTH !! Thank you Fred Thompson.

However, just as in "A Few Good Men" ... when Nicholson asked Cruise "if he could handle the truth?" ... Fred Thompson is asking the American voter ... if they can handle the truth.

Rush Limbaugh a few years ago realized that the he (Rush) could not run for political office ... because he would dare to speak the truth - and the American public would crucify him for daring say that "the Emporer has no clothes".

Fred Thompson speaks the same truth ... however I do believe that the American public is looking for inspiration - not just truth.

If Fred Thompson was able to not only speak the truth - but able to inspire as Reagan had - he would be invincible.

Fred is dead-on. Without finally facing up to the big elephant in the room, America is headed for some rough times. But, if we come together and do what's right, we fix these problems and ensure our prosperity.

Go, Fred, Go
