Thompson Staff Moves to South Carolina, Faces Pay Cuts
January 08, 2008 6:06 PM
ABC News' Christine Byun Reports: Choosing to make his "stand" in South Carolina, Republican presidential hopeful Fred Thompson will move about a dozen campaign staffers to the state in advance of its January 19th primary.
The staff will move from the Thompson campaign's McLean, Virginia headquarters.
Additionally, the former Tennessee Senator's campaign employees -- save a handful of junior staffers -- will face pay cuts.
Campaign spokesman Darrel Ng declined to say how much salaries will be reduced, but said the campaign has raised a half million dollars since the Iowa caucuses, and will be gearing up for airtime on local television stations in South Carolina starting Thursday.
"This campaign is going to be a South Carolina campaign," Campaign Manager Bill Lacy said in a written statement.
"Our local South Carolina team, headed by veteran strategist Dean Rice, will be calling the plays on the ground. Everything from our ads to our bus schedule is going to be driven by South Carolina," the statement said.
Thompson himself has acknowledged that South Carolina is crucial to his presidential hopes.
"This is where I have chosen to make my stand," Thompson said at an afternoon event in Lexington.

lolling @ the "segregationist" remark...right out of the Democrat playbook! The fact is that if he was trying to gain segregationist support he'd run as a Democrat.
The fact that Fred has to "make a stand" says it all. It is too bad his candidacy hasn't taken hold. I think he is the best candidate but his message is getting lost in the noise of the election.
He needs to find a better way to reach the voters.

Oh and by the way.If you want to complain about Thompson not getting enough air time, complain to ABC,FoxNews and so forth.

I am a FredHead, at least I think I am. He is the candidate in the election who is actually a conservative. Tancredo may have been the only other. Paul is a libertarian, no matter what party he belongs to. I want Fred to win, the media won't help, I'm flat broke, what to do? Are all the conservatives out there too busy to help?

Fred is the clear conservative. I get a little scared thinking about any of the other candidates in the oval office.
Fred Thompson has my vote and my support!

What is wrong with the Republican party? How can you people not rally around FRED? He's the only true conservative out there.
The Huckster is a snake oil salesman, Romney will say anything to get elected, Rudy's a liberal and McCain is for amnesty. Fred is strong on every issue.

Amen to the other comments. REALLY want Fred to do well. I've liked everything he's said and the way he has said it. He's not high powered, hyperactive and refrains from give and take sparing -- something the media is drawn to unfortunately. And yet, there are numerous one-liners he has put out there that they could have picked up on...("we took a holiday from history" being the latest)
GO FRED! I WISH I WASN'T BROKE!
