'70s Rocker to Huckabee: 'I've Been Ripped Off, Dude'

ABC News Kevin Chupka Reports: There's a battle of the bands brewing out on the 2008 campaign trail. Tom Sholz, founder of the band Boston, penned a letter to Republican candidate Mike Huckabee and asked him to stop using his '70s hit "More Than a Feeling" at campaign events.

In the letter Sholz wrote, "By using my song, and my band's name Boston, you have taken something of mine and used it to promote ideas to which I am opposed. In other words, I think I've been ripped off, dude!"

Huckabee played the song back in October in Clear Lake, Iowa with his band Capitol Offense accompanied by one of Sholz's former bandmates, Boston guitarist Barry Goodreaux. Huckabee has not used the song since performing it in October with Boston alum Goodreaux, choosing instead to play mainly southern rock or country. Standards on the Huckabee stump include Brooks and Dunn's "Only in America," Toby Keith's "How do you Like Me Now", and “Lynard Skynard's "Sweet Home Alabama.”"

Huckabee, who is on his way to the Cayman Islands, was unavailable for comment but campaign manager Chip Saltsman says, "While Governor Huckabee loves the song, along with other Boston hits, we are not using the song in our rallies or events and have in no way implied any endorsement from even Barry Goudreaux."

Saltsman insists the campaign has not claimed an endorsement from the band and that they "appreciate the attention that Mr. Sholz's letter has brought to our campaign and to Governor Huckabee being a being a musician, and he will be available for occasional gigs between campaign events."

Sholz's letter to Huckabee, obtained by Rolling Stone magazine, noted "While I’m flattered that you are fond of my song, I'm shocked that you would use it and the name Boston to promote yourself without my consent" adding his own '08 endorsement "although I'm impressed you learned my bass guitar part on 'More Than a Feeling', I am an Obama supporter."

If I was interested to know a rock stars, celebrity, or utube authors opinion on politics I'd go to them as a source. They mean nothing in my decision making. Get real, Huckabee is musically inclined, along with, the rock solid candidate to lead this nation. He was not using Boston song to campaign. Suppose the karioke and American Idol participates will be getting letters, also. God Bless America!

"In other words, I think I've been ripped off, dude!" What a fitting comment to such an entertaining primary season. It would have been better if he could have written in the coughing in between sentences, if you get my drift.

he is a politician, rip off is what they do. it´s their job. that said what happened to his son who was arrested at the airport with a loaded gun trying to board a commerical plane? does he get off because daddy´s a politician? I have a problem with huck being a bible thumper telling us how we should live our life, when he can´t even raise his own son right. yet family vaules is his big selling point. why isn´t the press all over this?

Gomer is a pathetic loser, with an incredible ego. It's over, has been for months. Been over since SC.

It figures that former evangelical Christian pastors are cheap and try to use bands as unofficial endorsements to their campaigns! I bet Huckabee's "feeling" was more than just disappointment... I think all the bands' music he used in his campaign dinners and events needs to be paid for, out of his own cheap pockets.
Why do Christians feel that they are above having to formally request use of copyrighted materials?

Are the Caymans where he put all that tobacco endorsement money????

Mr. Sholz is a one world leader lover. Great, this is even taking from my collection of all time favorites. Bigger picture- this is taking away my state borders, my sovereignty, and our constitution. One can not Amend our Democracy, the "CHANGE" is a whole new constitution drafted from UK. Thanks Sholz for being the voice, how about the American Idol contestants singing your lyrics? Thank for helping remove our stars off our flag.

I wholly support Governor Mike Huckabee. He would be a great leader for our country. We desperately need a conservative to appoint conservative Judicial and Supreme Court nominee's.

Then we need you to give him the kind of backup he needs to enact his ideas by replacing any liberal voting Senators, Representatives and Governors with conservatives who can still tell right from wrong.

Huck's trip to the Caymans was booked long ago. Being an honorable man who still needs to pay his mortgage, he kept and honored the engagement and supported his family.

Vote for McCain? I think not. I respect the man as a war veteran, and I don't doubt his intellect. However he is too far right for my taste.
I doubt Huckabee really meant for the song as an endorsement for his campaign, but still. In this day and age, never underestimate the chance of someone coming to take you to task on something like that.
