Fired Up Bill Clinton Goes Off on Pro-Lifers

February 17, 2008 7:50 PM

ABC News' Sarah Amos reports: Bill Clinton spoke today in Steubenville, Ohio, a primarily working community.

About 15 minutes into his talk, a group of people holding up signs in the audience began harassing him about the issue of abortion. Although the clearly devoutly pro-life group of people were here to cause trouble, Clinton didn't take the bait, responding with a long policy-type answer about Hillary Clinton's views on abortion.

"And guess what? Even though she, as a woman, did not believe we should overturn Roe v. Wade, she said, and she said again, at the outset of this election, that every abortion is a tragedy, and they should be more rare, but safe and legal," Clinton said.

"And I agree with her. But let's look at the record. It's easy for a politician to run and say, 'I'm pro-life, you vote for me, and we'll get rid of Roe v. Wade. Nobody can tell you how they're gonna do that ... I don't ... it's not gone yet.

"But when Hillary was in the White House, she supervised our efforts to, number one, let young women, who have children out of wedlock, live with their parents and still keep all their welfare benefits, so that the grandparents can take care of the kids while, the women went to school," Clinton continued.

"Number two, [she] led a serious effort to reduce teen pregnancy, and we had the lowest teen pregnancy rate since the statistics had been kept ... And guess what? Without overturning Roe v. Wade, or trying to keep people all torn up and upset or calling them killers, the abortion rate went down almost 20 percent on our watch."

But, clearly, that wasn't enough for the pro-life audience members. Many continued to stand silently, holding signs that said "abortion kills children," as Clinton continued speaking. Three teenagers stood with their backs to Clinton, praying with rosaries.

Eventually though one man had enough and shouted out, "what about pro-life, though?"

It appeared that Clinton had had his fill and erupted on the man as the rest of the audience applauded the former president. He was so angry, we, in the press, couldn't keep up with what he was saying. Clinton made it clear that, as a man, he disagreed on this issue.

"I reduced abortion ... tell the truth ... If you were really pro-life, you would want to put every doctor and every mother, as an accessory to murder, in prison. And you won't say you wanna do that, because you know that you wouldn't have a lick of political support.

"Now, you can't name me anybody presently in politics that did more to introduce policies that reduce the number of real abortions, instead of the hot air putting out to tear people up and make votes by dividing America."

An unrelenting Clinton continued, "This is not your rally. I heard you. That's another thing you need is a president, somebody who will stick up for individual rights, and not be pushed around, and [Hillary] won't.

"The policies she spearheaded saved a heck of a lot more lives than all the TV ads that were bought and all the hot air that was spread. And we ought to talk about that."

It seemed, at the rope line afterwards, that Clinton had pleasant words with a few of the sign holders after the event was over.

Looks like Bill's got some pretty thin skin, and Hilliary has to use her man to back her up all the time. Makes you wonder who's gonna be in charge if she gets elected; Huh??? Both of these folks are bullies and control freaks. But I guess after eight years of BUSH, the people have been conditioned to accept nothing less. It's pitiful, really.

now this is when he's at his best, talking policy and putting people in their place. i don't support hillary because she was along for the ride, but term #3 for this guy would get my support. never seen a bigger waste of spending than the newt fiasco, all over a little intern service, give me a break

Interesting that he says "the policies....saved a heck of a lot more lives...." I thought a "fetus" wasn't actually a living human. So the opposite of pro life must be pro death according to Bill.

Posted by: agc | Feb 17, 2008 8:29:05 PM

Bill Clinton's passionate and effective rant is intended to break the perceived blockage by media who, contrary to Obama, are reluctant to publish Hillary Clinton position on the issues fairly.

Posted by: Angel | Feb 17, 2008 8:31:34 PM

Abortion is a private matter for a woman alone. I don't hear about the churches conducting funeral services for all of the miscarriages, abortions, or other misfortunate events. Life begins at birth- period. That's why we have our first birthday one year later. A viable fetus should be given the chance to breathe, if successful, a birth has taken place and a new individual with rights is now among us.

The Clintons are toast...no more Clintons & no more Bushes!!!

Posted by: Cynical_Me | Feb 17, 2008 8:52:44 PM

Again, the abortion debate continues - and elements of the "pro life" cadre impose themselves on a big picture gathering with a single issue.

First of all, let us - once and for all - abandon the very term "pro life" to describe those who are anti-abortion. After all, it is a far more accurately-descriptive term. If those who are anti-abortion would just say so, and describe themselves as such, I believe they would have more credibility. Certainly, their stock would be worth more with me if they were more honest.

Likewise, one should be just as accurate when referencing those on the opposite side of the fence. Since I have heard no one propose surgical termination of all pregnancies, one would accurately describe "the other side" as pro-choice. Simply, a choice to terminate an uninvited, unwelcome pregnancy.

The matter of terminating a pregnancy is intellectual, emotional and psychological. Above all else, no woman should ever have to be what is sometimes described as a "baby machine" because she has become pregnant. Through careful, thoughtful, perhaps prayerful consideration - and working within the health care system - each woman should be able to make their own decision.

To address the anti-abortion movement and its participants, I offer this: when the medical community can successfully remove an embryo from a woman's body and transplant it to a willing host, I will be first in line to personally and financially support eradication of abortions.

Until this happens, a woman should absolutely have the right to terminate an unwelcome pregnancy. And, those of the anti-abortion ilk should divert their efforts from disruption to research.

I agree with the first person - 'ohionative.' How can ABCNEWS justify such an headline? I have seen the tape of the alleged 'going-off' and I did not see anything like 'going-off.'Is Sarah Amos working fo the Obama campaign now or what? Is is insane! Where is Peter Jennings when you need him. This is such and irresponsible news editing and I have been a fan of ABCNEWS for years but when you go wrong I will tell you. This is the lowest you have gone in this campaign. I will have to look up Sara Amos on-line on her qualifications, school background etc. I need to know the caliber of the person I am trusting as my source for news and information. What is this? Tabloid ABC? Giveme a break Sara!

Posted by: Emanuel | Feb 17, 2008 8:57:29 PM

I wonder how the prolife debate will develope once artificial womb's become a reality... At that point any early term fetus could be transfered to an artificial womb for further growth rather than being aborted... I'm guessing at that point they'll probably turn over the pro-choice laws. Until then I hope women still have the right to chose.

Posted by: Shaun | Feb 17, 2008 8:58:19 PM

Where is Hillary? this is not the best way to conduct her campaign, she is loosing by using her man who is being credited by the outcomes of the Hillary's ambition to be a president. Bill has had 2 mandates and there is no need for a third mandate which was Al Gore's task, but he has lost because of Bill, Jeb Bush, Catherine Harris and the supreme court.

I'm basically against making abortion illegal but I believe it should not be funded by the government.
But Bill Clinton talking about how great he was on abortion (how many people have had to have abortions directly because of him, I wonder...?)
just rings phony to me.
The Clinton's want to be everyone's buddy and Mr. Clinton just gets pissed when he sees that there are people, and not small in number, who just don't like him. It hurts his feelings and more so, his pride, and so he attacks. He feels everyone should like him because everyone knows what a GREAT guy he is. And BTW, the writers don't write the headlines. That's done by edit whores who write stuff like, "Britney avoids death!" because she lives through another day.

Posted by: janice | Feb 17, 2008 9:10:23 PM

He said:
"That’s another thing you need is a president, somebody who will stick up for individual rights..."

He got that part right, but Hillary has not and will not do that... her history proves that she tramps on individual rights because "it's for society's/your own good/safety", and that is called SOCIALISM.

Doesn't anyone do research any more or even know the actual meaning of words?

Posted by: Constitutionalist#1 | Feb 17, 2008 9:17:42 PM

To all you right wingers: If you are so concerned about the lives of the
unborn quit dumping trillions of dollars in debt on them before they are
even born.

I'm an Obama supporter, but (for the first time this campaign) BRAVO PRESIDENT CLINTON!

Steubenville, OH, is home to the Franciscan University of Steubenville, rated the third most conservative college/university in the nation by US News. I have friends who have done graduate work there, and all I can say is they make Liberty University look like UC Berkley. Roe v. Wade is not going away, it shouldn't go away, and I'm disgusted by the conduct of these protesters.

Posted by: Jake | Feb 17, 2008 9:21:52 PM

I am pro-choice and have always believed the government should stay out of people's personal lives. If abortion is wrong, then we will be judged by God when we die.
But what about war and armies and "Thou shalt not kill?" Why is it acceptable to
kill people when they are all grown up? When we eliminate war, then I will sit down with you and talk about abortion.

Obama is pretty much a blank canvass on this issue wouldn't you say? Whatever his position is it's probably better than Hillary Clinton's, right ABC? By the way, the right wing fanatics are doing everything possible to send Hillary down in flames because they perceive Obama as a weaker target. Wake up Democrats.

Commandante Ashburn, you don't have the moral authority to put the name Bush in the same sentence with Clinton. Bush is the worst President of all time, Bill Clintion is in the top ten.

I am pro-choice AND pro-life. And I vote.
All you nosy people, stop thinking you have a right to determine the country's political future and my life's direction by taking away a woman's right to choose.

It looks like Bill Clinton made a lot of points I agree with and he attributed them to Hillary. Bill Clinton is an effective advocate for Hillary and all the blather that he isn't is coming from those folks who want to silence him because he is a wonderful campaign asset. There are those who say that Clinton did not lose his cool in this exchange but in fact gave a thrilling speech.

Posted by: Two-cats | Feb 17, 2008 9:43:21 PM

Everytime i log read any news is all Obama this and Obama that, and of course all positive, and guess who are following his every move, their supporters that have nothing better to do than to stand besides him like disciples. Come convention day all of you will get a rude awakening from the brainwashing. I never seen followers sooo brainwashed and clueless like the Obama followers. Get over it, and start reading the facts and who's best for our country, whether is Obama or Clinton. Its time to break from the 'yes we can' bubble already.

Posted by: PB | Feb 17, 2008 9:46:07 PM

I read the headline and thought this should be an interesting story. As I'm reading the story I realized I WAS THERE! I now know first hand not to believe what you read in the headlines. The more I think about it, it's actually confusing why the writer even thought of using this as the headline.

Posted by: larry | Feb 17, 2008 9:48:48 PM

I think we still need to let both parents of the unborn child decide together what should be done. Will anyone of you that says abortion is killing an unborn child be willing to care for that child when it is born. Someone needs to love, feed, cloth and raise that child. It not enough to want to make a decision for someone else without putting your time, talent and money where your mouth and actions have taken you and others. Hillary will work hard for us. As with all careers, it appears she works harder than any of the men running, they have had their chance. It is our turn. Look at our status in the world, economy, health care and other issues here at home, I doubt she could do worse than they have done for hundreds of years. Let us have a turn it. May the best win.

See, this is the reason REAL feminist have issues with Hillary. She used to be a BONA FIDE feminist back in the day. She would have just stated abortion is the right of a woman. She wouldn't be making comments about it being such a terrible thing and should only be used in special occassions.

You want to know why todays fems such a Dowd and the others are not on her bandwagon? Well, that is the reason.

Others dislike her for her rude and condesending remarks about stay at home moms, and other women in general. She basically said they were good for nothing, empty headed, bon-bon eating trolls. And stupid for standing by a man that would disrepect a woman by cheating on her. See a transcript of the 60 minutes interview conducted in 1992 for evidence of this.

Looks like the new Hillary has a change of heart. Either it is a change of heart, kissing up for votes, or a lack of conviction. Either way, it's the markings of a flip-flopper.

Yet here these women are falling all over themselves to support her. Laughable.

Here we go again with a media guru asserting that Bill C was "Angry!" I admire his remarks and to him for standing up to these bully-jerks. Anger?? I doubt this behavior even comes close to his real anger. His words, however, are realistic in a jaded world. No politician is going to bring about a magic solution for the "pro-lifers" just by saying they will when he/she becomes President. I think Obama is probably a really nice, decent guy. But I think the present system in Washington will ring his bell when he tries to make something he promised on the campaign trail just happen. He doesn't have the political clout to deal with the power in D.C. I will vote for him if he becomes the candidate, but I would rather entrust getting things done to someone who has been there, understands the rats-ass way things get done there, and who has the clout to get something else done. Change just for the sake of change, in Obama's case, isn't necessarily good.

Bill Clinton is a control freak. He just can't stand anyone telling him what's up. Also he has no morals and values. Clintons have been around too long. Let's have a new start.

Posted by: Don Tangeman | Feb 17, 2008 10:36:25 PM

abortion is going to happen no matter what. Gays havn't stopped being gay since Sodom. Moral issues are always going to be issues. The poor we will always have with us. We can't abolish these things. But we can get our troops home and we can change our economy. Wait for Jesus to come back and take care of those who have no regard for life. Start working on the things that can be changed not the things that can't.

Posted by: terrie | Feb 17, 2008 10:36:41 PM

The Clintons are a walking contradiction. They state that every abortion is a tragedy. Why? In every abortion a young human being is killed. Then they say they support keeping abortion legal. If abortion is a tragedy, why keep it legal? If abortion kills a human being, why keep it legal?

Bill Clinton vetoed the partial-birth abortion ban twice, even though it was passed by bi-partisan votes both times. This is killing fully developed human beings. Nurses testified to Congress that babies were being killed after delivery because of this procedure. Clinton also funded abortion world-wide.

The Clintons can go to hell.

What change, Obama has no fresh ideas and he has no experience..Please, HE WILL RAISE TAXES, YOU CAN TAKE THAT TO THE BANK.

Posted by: Antonn | Feb 17, 2008 10:43:36 PM

Yep, everyone listen up Hillary has "35 Years of Experience" doing what she does. I just do not understand what it is/was? Would this be with Bill Clinton or without? Most of the people for her spent their time arguing about Obama's lack of experience/substance but never tell us what hers is? I have listened to both of them speak and their plans for this country are very similar. Accept for Universal Healthcare. Neither one of them will probably get beyond Congress with those plans. Neither one of them have no idea what will be needed to get this country on the right track until they get in there. She is relying on Bill Clinton's guidance. She all substance/smoke also. She has not accomplished anything great that stands out in Americans minds. When I think of her, I think about Bill Clinton and his track record, not hers.

If experience is suppose to be everyone's argument, what went wrong with this country? Did Bush not have an overwhelming amount of experience? What has Dick Cheney done for us lately?

That is exactly why this country is heading into a recession because of experience? Old ass people sitting in Corporate America knowing they need to retire but no we are not open to bringing in younger people with new and fresh ideas to implement positive changes. Older people are set in their ways.

Now we are sitting here with Great Grandpa McCain getting ready to run this country...Why because he was in the military. He has more experience than the other two. So did George Bush…

By the way, I agree with everyone else if Hillary is going to be budgeting the country economy woes then she needs to do a better job of working with smaller amounts such as her campaign finances first. With all this said I still might vote for her if she starts crying again, I hate to see the only woman in this race being attacked by men.

Posted by: cba,

BINGO brother or sister. Bill saw triangulation as a success. The Liberal establishment of his party saw it as shameful. He was VERY pro-business. Dems. witnessed a good deal of money going towards big-business and they DID NOT like it.

He was Conservative in business matters and liberal in social matters, you are correct. I truly believe if given enough time though, his social policies would have gone in the direction of conservative as well.

Remember when Howard Dean stated: "I'm from the Democratic wing of the Democratic party?" Well, that was a jab at no other than Bill Clinton.

As you know, avg. citizens like Bill. But, the Democratic establishment, could careless about him and many downright didn't or don't like him. They didn't defend him against Impeachment because they like him. They did it for the party.

Dennis Andrews,
I agree with your post as well. As for myself, I haven't decided who I'm voting for next month. Both of them, Obama and Hillary, are one in the same. My support for one over the other will depend on personal qualities and the likely hood of being a successful person to lead the party.

Seems as though Bill was attempting to say, "Are you pro-life,or the theatrics of pro-life?" After holding a Majority of nominees in the Supreme Court, the Senate, 49% of the House of Representatives, AND the Presidency...how can Abortion STILL be legal? If they wanted to overturn Roe vs. Wade, they had all the tools and 2 FULL years to accomplish it. If the churches REALLY were concerned, they should have threated to remove their support.

Posted by: able | Feb 17, 2008 10:56:49 PM

Get off "the Clintons" case with this piddling stuff, especially the half-baked nonsense like this --- you so-called pro-lifers really got your facts wrong, out of balance, and with a heaping pile of blinding anger on top. Please find something useful to do with your energy and concern.

You are still angry over th Lewinsky deal?? Is that it??? Let's dig up Eisenhower's mistress facts, JFK's, FDR's and even his wife's---yet these are among our most admired presidents. Bill will be as well, as will Hillary.

Are you angry about the balanced budget from Bill's administration? The increase in aid to education? The hand reached out to the poor, to the down-trodden? The heart-wrenching work done to bring health insurance within everyone's reach? Well, which is it? What makes your blood boil so?

Posted by: BelAirMan | Feb 17, 2008 11:15:31 PM

Hillary, and just about every other red-blooded American, wanted to stand behind our government and our troops, and wanted to ensure the world got that message, after the Administration "showed" us all of the incriminating information linking Saddam to .... I forget---was it ruling his splintered country with an iron fist? The country that was made up of slpinters by the West (UK mostly) only back around 1936, a gulf coast country with a tiny pie-point of gulf access?

The truth has come out, many times---I am more shocked (although I shouldn't be by now) by the ongoing pack of lies than I was watching the evening news during the Watergate days. That didn't getinnocent Americans and "coalition of the willing" and, tragically, countless Iraqis caught in the crossfire that comes with war.

No one actually voted for the war; the vote was to show unity as a strong country. I'm sure even President Bush did not in any way anticipate the horrors that this has lead to---he wanted to end so badly that he flew that infamous "Mission Accomplished" on the Navy ship, so long ago now.

How does any of this add up to singling out Hillary or any other politician who voted to support our country, as a hypocritical traitor??

According to the Guttmacher Institute, the US abortion rate peaked in 1980 and has declined since then.

Quoting Guttmacher Institute: Between 1992 and 1996, the annualized decline in the abortion rate was 3.4% per year,
while between 1996 and 2000 it was 1.2% per year. The annualized decline between
2000 and 2003 was 0.8% per year, suggesting that the rate of decline slowed in thesethree years, compared with the preceding periods. These results should be interpreted
with caution, however, because of possible error in the projections.
End quote.

Thus, Bill Clinton is once again exposed as a liar. Abortions did not decline by almost 20% during his term, and indeed, it seems that abortions were under a steeper decline when he took over from Bush 1, and then the rate of decline slowed under Clinton, just like it has under Bush 2.

Here's one fact you can count on: The Clintons lie as naturally as they breathe. In fact, a good strategy to follow with them is this: do not believe anything they say...assume it is a lie...unless and until you have very rigorous proof otherwise.

Following is Hill's frustrated changing mantra and the anti-dotes:

Her 35 years Experience - Fairy Tale as proved by failing campaign

Vetted - She's not releasing Tax returns

Tested - Failure to campaign in Caucus states

Action - Broke her own promise to wage nationwide campaign

Solutions - Loan her own broke campaign war chest and remember Hill
Force One to help her Iowa campaign sorties but still lost.

Doer - Her senate output was trounced by Barack in quantity and
quality despite with longer tenure.

Result - Her own mismanaged and broke campaign machine is evidence

With all these words she've used against Barack, the results and actions
actually reflects her own record and no one can dispute them.

I attended in Canton, Ohio...Right before the Steubenville, Ohio speech and there was an Obama heckler there...But, Bill treated the heckler with intelligence, dignity and class...
What a terrific spokesperson, Bill Clinton is...Just like Hillary !!

She certainly has my vote...In 1992 she tried to get affordable Health Care for everyone in America, especially the middle class and the poor...But, the Republicans shot her down time and time again...They controlled the House of Representatives...And never wanted a Democrat to get credit for helping the Nation...
I am afraid if Senator Obama is elected, he will give in to the Republicans...And it will be more of what we have Now!!
By the way, ANTONN...You ROCK!!!!!!!!

You know Hillary was an anti-war activist like John Kerry and still is .If she was given information based on lies then the blame is on Bush. He used Sept. 11 as an excuse to go to war. Who would have believed Bush could do this? It fooled all the senators and congressman except for Kuzinich. Someday you'll be sorry if you don't vote for her then it would be too late.So use your judgement.I admire a great person like her. In 3rd world countries due to the gag rule started by Reagan and resurrected by Bush 70,000 women die each year from illegal abortion. Not to mention the carnage in Iraq bought to America and the world by our Pro-Life president who was put in power in part by the Pro-Lifers. I think what these people really care about is power and control over others and earning brownie points to heaven. This isn't about anybody but then.

Legal abortion is to protect the mothers who so choose from going underground & getting butchered,& dyeing from infections. The best remedy is not to get pregnant. 2nd best is adoption. You can't legalize morality. People have to care about themselves & make better choices. Civil Law can have some effect. But the prisions are full of these law breakers too. If someone wants to do something bad enough, they will.

Lots of anger, excuses and whining about media coverage from Clinton supporters. Sounds to me like someone knows they're about to lose.

As a mother of four. I Love my children very very much. I would give my life for them. But I am truly for abortion. If abortion becomes illegal there will be more babies found in dumpsters and in bathrooms and any where else you could possibly think of. Do any of you who are pro-life want to adopt the millions of babies who are unwanted by their parents. many are abused and then eventully killed. NO. because none of you look at The truth. NO ONE is ever going to stop unprotected sex among teens or adults. It is a very real thing no matter what you or I believe. NO ONE will be able to stop those girls who hide their pregnancies from the world for fear of shame. And those babies will be disposed of like trash at full term. a baby not a fetus. a breathing baby. a crying baby. Abortion is not a form of birth control. But if made illegal those horrible things we all read about will happen more. and more violently. You must use your mind not your emotions. If you are smart people then why would you all rather see a real murder of a full term baby. Then a legal abortion that is done at seven weeks gestation. Yes no matter how you look at it. It is all wrong not holly not normal but very very real. Another thing is rape. If any of your young daughters were raped you would make them carry a baby by their attackers. WHY. Why would you cause more damage. I just do not understand. that does not sound like you love your children to me. When you love you children you do what you can to protect them not damage them..............

Yeah for President Clinton! His remarks were right on point. I just watched his 1991 lecture at the Harvard Kennedy School of Government internet site ... for any who are still going to opine about perceived presidential transgressions please read "The Investigation, Affair and Impeachment of Preisdent Clinton," by Richard A. Posner, 7th Circuit Court of Appeals Judge, U of Chicago Law School faculty, and author of over 50 books. Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton is the only choice for President of the United States of America. If all of the Pro Life people would go home and clean their houses, get in shape, clean up their neighborhoods, help the kids in their neighborhoods who are dying for love and attention and academic help instead of worrying about other women's reproductive resumes we would all be better served. Abortion is a poor woman's issue not a rich woman's ... you pro lifers are fools in my books just above the jihad people screaming about allah and pointing fingers. Where I live if you are pointing there are 3 fingers pointing back at ya!

How the cheating Mr Plagiarism himself can plead with anyone to "be honest" is beyond me....but then again, the Clintons are masters of 'don't do what I do, but do what I say!" Oh it's a beautiful thing--Clintons, your time is up. Your so called legacy is forever tarnished and you power grip will soon be over.

Hillary Clinton is running to be President of big delegate states, blue-collar workers, and Latinos. Nobody else in the nation matters to her and her campaign. And you wonder, how can anyone who is so calculating about everything, and so selective/divisive, find the concensus to get her programs through Congress? If she failed to get her healthcare plan through even while her husband was President, how is she going to get it through now that she's all about fighting the Republicans and dismissing the Independents? Every poll shows that more Americans are less willing to vote for her than are willing to do so: of all three viable candidates including Senator McCaine she's the only one with that consistent statistic. I'm just wondering.

And, btw, if she is incapable of putting together a competent team to run a primaries campaign successfully without running it aground and into bankruptcy, how is she going to be able to assemble the right people to get us out of the Iraq mess (in whatever way) and turn the economy around?

Which returns us to that Iraq vote: if she was unable to make the right judgement then when she was not under pressure as commander-in-chief, if she could not see that going to Iraq was the wrong path to take, what's going to happen now when she's commander-in-chief? If she made an error of judgement then (and I'd suppose she did so having fully discussed with her husband), how can we guarantee that she'll not make another error of judgement that sends us into another costly war with the economy in shambles?

I'm sorry that few people get to ask about these things.

I find it funny in here when you got so-called Democrats trashing the Clinton yrs when you don't see one Republicans trashing the Reagan yrs. Hmmm you have Democrats that say they will vote for McCain if Hillary gets in. Sounds like an oxymoron. All I want is you Obamacans to say is that you are really Republicans. Because I know you are. Im' just telling you Republicans out there that History will be very very harsh on your little village idiot you have in the whitehouse now.

Posted by: MR | Feb 18, 2008 2:06:27 AM

So Bruce its Ok for McCain to say we're going stay in Iraq for the next 100 yrs and that's a more viable candidate than Hillary? You see folks that’s the kind of logic I'm talking about. Most polls show either Hillary or Obama are ahead of McCain so I don't know where you're are getting your information from.

I couldn't keep speaking nicely if a bunch of determined hecklers keep yelling out at me. As a frequent speaker he probably had the confidence to handle it better. It sounds pretty much like a sales job to me from him as well though standing up for individual rights is a reasoned choice too. I don't think its fair to say he has thin skin as its really hard to speak to those that your trying to address when a small number of determined hecklers can ruin it for the rest. Its an emotional issue as your damned if you do and damned if you don't.

First, I'm anti-abortion. Not pro-life because I believe in the death penalty. As a man I feel I have no right to tell a woman what to do with her body. The thing with bill is he wants us to believe the 90 were the great’s times since the garden of eve!! “The abortion rate went down almost 20 percent on our watch.” That what bill said. But in the Black community the abortion rate continue to grow in the 90’s. About 13 percent of American women are black, yet new figures from the Centers for Disease Control show they account for 35 percent of the abortions.

They are still advocates of the people who are against the rights of every American infant no matter how you slice it (them) up!

Posted by: Daleri | Feb 18, 2008 3:38:39 AM

Lisa, wrong topic, wrong subject. We are talking about Bill Clinton's 'going off' on hecklers about abortion.

Posted by: Emanuel | Feb 18, 2008 3:43:50 AM

Overturning Roe v Wade would NOT take away a woman's right to choose. It would allow each state individually to decide whether abortion was legal or not. That's all. The people in each state would actually get a say on whether that is legal in that state.

And, to the person that quoted "Thou shalt not kill" and mentioned war, that is ridiculous. That refers to murder. War was common even in Biblical times and good soldiers were even praised. God even directed the killing of thousands in war (read Joshua). Some other things that are fine in the Bible are slavery and polygamy. What do you think about those?

Posted by: Bob | Feb 18, 2008 4:03:06 AM

I can't think of anyone who deserves to be heckled more than Bill Clinton!

Posted by: dgfiit | Feb 18, 2008 4:29:31 AM

Both Clinton and the protesters hold some truth here - there are ways to reduce abortions other than banning them; on the other hand, as long as it is easier to get an abortion than an ear piercing, we are still not dealing responsibly with the as a society. For many people, this problem doesn't register, but it is truly a matter of national shame.

Will someone give the Clinton's a break? I'm not crazy about another "dynasty" in the White House but the truth is that she is a proven leader who has worked her butt off and you can't deny that. Obama will be ready, but not now. The Clinton's have been there before and they know how to play the game, which unfortunately is how it is...oh and a fetus is alive. Check a biology book.

The same tired old blarney from the American Left. Demonize the Christians. Equating destroying evil to protect our lives with the murder of a defenseless unborn. Undoing Roe won't legalize abortion, it just gives the States the right to decide. Hillary has no experience and Obama is a radical Leftist and Bill is salivating to get back in the White House. Sheesh, what a bunch of maroons.

The Clintons are both PHONIES and consumate liars. Anyone who would stand up for Partial Birth Abortion has much to answer for. Clinton is about to pay for his indescretions while he was president. His power crazed wife's campaign is going down in flames. These two will be a footnote in history 30yrs from now, the footnote will be about thier political corruption...

Ah yes, let's all take our moral advice from an impeached president, convicted liar, sex maniac and habitual womanizer. Bubba needs to fade into the sunset . . . quickly.

If men could get pregnant there would be safe legal abortion clinics on every corner of every street in this country and they would be free. This "pro-life" argument is interesting. I’m pro-my life and pro my choice about my health care. The religious right holds the cross and the flag to cover up exactly what Hillary Clinton has fought for and, who continues to be the best advocate, for the saving of the lives of women! The religious right seems to think that women won’t have abortions if they make them illegal. That’s super stupid. Abortions would continue because women always have and always will choose whether or not to continue a pregnancy. You can make a law but you will turn millions of women into outlaws. Outlawed abortions would become unsafe and the result would be that adult, already born women would die. The religious right is free to CHOOSE. They want the rest of us to be denied that choice, based on their RELIGIOUS beliefs. Therefore, if the religion wins, women who terminate a pregnancy, illegally, and they will, will be criminals. The wing nuts who then will perform abortions will be criminals and they would be. However, any medical doctor who performed an illegal abortion, and they would, would be a criminal. To the religious right “Keep your laws off my body”. To Bill Clinton – Right On! To young women on the Obama vapor train, get off and take a look at who really understands your issues and who will not only fight for them but will hold them as a priority. And to those women who don't think this is their issue. Think again.

Abortion is the right of the women. It should not involve and interfere by any politicians or religions. If a woman (except teenager) is not ready to have children, they can decide whatever they want to do. Anti abortion, are you willing to raise her child if a woman does not want her baby after given birth?

Posted by: stock_craft | Feb 18, 2008 10:05:25 AM

This rude crowd calls itself pro-life but their agenda is government intervention over the hard decisions young woman have to make. I would hope that they could choose to bring their pregancies to term and the Clinton Administration should be praised for its policy efforts in this direction. They did reduce the number of abortions while protecting liberty at the same time. I guess that's why these pseudo pro-lifers hat
