Bill Clinton Gets Some Love at the End of a Long Day in Ohio

Share

February 17, 2008 11:02 PM

ABC News' Sarah Amos reports:  After an admittedly long day, trecking across Ohio, former President Clinton got to end the night on a high, and more importantly, peaceful note in Marietta, Ohio.

Clinton landed in Ohio at 3 a.m., was at church by 8 a.m., and didn't roll into the final rally until 9 p.m. But while the hours were tough, the crowds had been tougher.

The ex president was repeatedly heckled by a man in Canton, Ohio, who later went up to the rope line to continue scolding Clinton for being negative during his campaigning for Hillary.

Clinton's next stop, in Steubenville, led to a now well-known eruption with anti-abortion hecklers in the audience.

So, the president had to feel happy with the friendly welcome he got tonight in Marietta, especially with his introduction from Gov. Ted Strickland.

Strickland told the crowd, "I wish the media would scan this audience and let them see the number of people who are here." Strickland went on to say that Ohio would prove that it is Hillary country, and then made the audience turn around and wave at all the cameras, to prove the support Hillary has in this state.

Sure, it wasn't much, but after the day Clinton had, the gesture had to be welcomed.

Well...Thank Goodness !!
I was at Canton, Ohio and I have photos of that man questioning Bill and trying to ruin the momentum that we had going!!
He also kept yelling "OBAMA" throughout the speech...Why do hecklers attend these events? It certainly isn't a positive experience for those of us who are interested in what the campaigners have to say.

MaryAnn,

I agree with you on the Obama supporters showing up to heckle. You don't see Hillary supporters doing that. When it comes to injecting negativity the Obamaites take their play book straight from the republicans. Thats what happens when a big part of your support and money comes from the republican party.

Who ever wrote this still you meanness to the Clintons is so obvious...If I were you, be brave enough to reveal your name..anyways,thks for writing about Pres. Clinton after all the Golden Rule says "Do not do unto others what others do not want to do unto you"!
simply be fair...let there be peace in America! Is it hard for you to welcome the Clintons?

I can't believe the positive stories we have been hearing about the Clintons lately. I am so glad. There are specific reasons we are their supporters. I realize this story is about Bill, but people need to know them as we do. I feel like the media is finally giving them a bit of a break.
Thank you!

Oh for pete's sake, it's TREKKING. Sorry, I just had to get that out.

While I support HRC, I am worried about the Rezko impact for Obama (he could very well have my vote in Nov if he can prove his national security credentials an convince me that he will have Universal health Care)

Her habits are her character are her destiny. Secretive, prizes loyalty over truth and honesty, insular. Too many old friends and old enemies (Bill is in both categories) Let her serve as a wonky NY senator--that is not small potatoes and she can guide her policies from there. If we wanted experience so bad why did Biden, Dodd and Richardson combine for 10% of the vote?

The A to Z Guide of Clinton Scandals, read that book before you try to start throwing mud on other people. Right now when America is getting ready for a new political era, some retrograds want to go back to have a Springer show in the White House. Think about the future!JJ, are you one of those lobbyists supporting Clinton afraid of lossing your investment?

Posted by: carmen | Feb 18, 2008 8:14:47 AM

Interesting arguments - While I am not an Obama supporter (at least not yet...), I have come to know that both the Clintons and their surrogate clintonians will do anything to get to the white house. I had high hopes and regard for Hillary initially, but the strings of negative attacks on Obama is making this whole process muddy, eroding the well deserved and respected statesmanship position of Bill and might bit the Clintons later. I am in favor of positive, constructive policy attacks, not silly stuff like - Obama's kindergarten essays and a heckler from Canton, Ohio. Unfortunately, we only hear all these funny stuff when Obama is winning and not when he is losing... Maybe an investigation should be launched...

Sorry...I'm still laughing at the fact that this was considered "newsworthy" by someone.

But in all seriousness, who CARES if Slick Willy had a rough day on the campaign trail. Like no one else does. Give me a break. Makes it pretty clear whose campaign ABC is rooting for.

Nice to see that Hilliary is back to "the politics of personal destruction" These people will do anything to win. It just shows that they have nothing new to offer America, except partisanship and vitriol. The same old, tired, washington insiders, with the same old policy agendas and solutions from sixteen years ago. American deserves REAL change, and better solutions than what the Clinton clan is offering. (And I'm NOT even an Obama supporter, HA!)

Its good to see all of the little kids are still on here. let me repeat this we can't win in Nov. unless we all agree watch and see. he Obama can't travel to all the states on the eve of the election and do pep rally's so like in the pass when we have been split we will not win

Posted by: bishop | Feb 18, 2008 9:36:51 AM

I think it’s an interesting media spin that the Clintons are desperate when an Obamacan attacks a former President and then of course runs to "daddy media" to call off big bad Bill. The spin could have been Obmacans fear losing and are so desperate to win, they disrupt campaign speech of Former President Bill Clinton. Could have read Former President Bill Clinton attacked by desperate Obamcan who failed in his sophomoric attempt to silence the Clinton campaign. Could have read Radical Right Sees Writing On The Wall - Hillary Continues To Have a Solid base Support. Or Radical Right Supporters fearing that a woman’s right to choose their health care will continue and strengthen under Hillary Clinton, dispatch hecklers to silence her message by attacking a former president. Oh, that’s right, this is the Obama channel brought to us by the Media Wizards.

Obama supporters showing up as hecklers is low. President Clinton handled it very well.

Posted by: maria | Feb 18, 2008 9:49:41 AM

There is no doubt that the Obama camp, with the complicity of NBC news, sends these maniacs to disrupt Clinton's rallies. For example, such things do not happen in Obama's rallies and NBC was on the spot to interview this this black guy who claims President Clinton was very angry and pushed him, which is a blatant lie. Second, NBC is making this story its headlines this morning. Shame!!! NBC and Obama should apologize to the Clinton's for unleashing these maniacs with the aim of shifting attention from Obama's empty rhetoric and flip-flop on public finances during the weekend.

Jack, Greenville, SC

One guy? Obama people have been following the Clinton's around from city to city since this campaign started last year. If the Obama butt kissing media would do their jobs you would hear about it more often. The stories are on the Internet.

I have been to five speeches of both Clinton's and at three of them some nasty Obama people have showed up. At two of them they weren't that smart. They started heckling Clinton supporters who came to hear Hillary speak about her ideas for America outside the door. When they got to the door they were turned away. Thank god they were so dumb. It was nice to hear about ideas and plans for America. At the other one the hecklers got in and Hillary had barely started when from behind me several guys yelled, "Go home woman! You don't belong in the WH!" They yelled the same thing over and over and over again until security came over and escorted them outside. All dozen or so were wearing Obama t shirts reading "Obama the man." What a load. As the guys were being lead out Hillary remarked, "With so many great men in our country, how did I end up with those guys?" She laughed it off.

To have to hear remarks like that over and over and over again she has a steely resolve. I love her ideas and plans for America and she inspires me. What a strong and great president she will be. I can't wait to get rid of Bush.

The Baracklash is just getting started. Hope won't get a Democrat elected in November. Hillary Clinton is the only candidate who can overtake the Republicans. Period.

Posted by: totalclownshow | Feb 18, 2008 11:12:54 AM

Obama sends some of his wild supporters to create this scenario so as to feed the gullible and bias media, and to derail attention from his vacuous speeches. Can someone tell me what Obama stands for apart from plagiarising the speeches of iconic figures?

Posted by: mary lou | Feb 18, 2008 11:15:20 AM

Hillary is the only candidate that the Repubs can beat in November - GO HILLARY!
She needs to get back in the WH so she can throw the taxpayers china @ Bubba instead of her own when he acts like the alley cat that he is. No respect for a woman who would ##### herself out by staying with the jerk just so she can do some political climbing on his back.

Posted by: kathy | Feb 18, 2008 11:24:15 AM

The Clinton's will use any means to get back into the Whitehouse. Both Clinton's are so power hungry they will do anything to achieve thier aims..Unfortunately that does not include what is best for the American people.. ALl this nonsense about the middle class is just hype, originally it was for the poor; if Clinton gets into the WH we will all be destitute

Posted by: Valerie Tarantolo | Feb 18, 2008 11:39:12 AM

Even if the heckler is an Obama supporter, he is a democrat. A democrat supporter heckling a democrat nominee in a democrat campaign event

I hear so much about the negativity and dity tricks of the Clintons but I have never heard any specifics or seen any proof. Republicans with the help of Ken Starr spent years trying to dig up dirt on the Clintons. Starr found NOTHING. When they finally realized they couldn't get any dirt on the Clintons they set up the Monica trap. For those of you who don't believe it was a set-up; why did she keep the soiled dress?? I agree it wasn't the brightest thing to do but it was between Bill and Hillary and had nothing to do with his being one of the best presidents in our recent history. The dirty republican tricks will continue with them crossing political lines to vote against Hillary and keep her out of the White House. A vote for Obama is a vote for the republican sleaze machine.

I was at the Canton rally yesterday when the "heckler" made a jerk out of himself. The heckler talked into his cell phone, laughed, yelled, danced and positioned himself in front of the media for face time. He was politely asked several times by people in the audience to stop yelling so we could hear Mr. Clinton speak. His behavior was weird and he was being watched by the police. He doesn't deserve any media coverage and I can't believe the Obama camp would condone this behavior.

HEADLINE of this article: "Bill Clinton Gets Some Love at the End of a Long Day in Ohio" Geez....Here we go again. And Hillary hasn't even been elected yet.

Posted by: What does it say? | Feb 18, 2008 5:37:22 PM

I was at the Clinton rally yesterday at Timken High School in Canton, Ohio. I witnessed this "event" from less than 15 yards from where it occurred, at the "rope line" following Clinton's presentation.

At no time did President Clinton slap this man's face.

What I did see and experience, throughout the rally, was Mr. Holeman's completely obnoxious, repulsive, juvenile and erratic behavior.

The campaign season brings out the kooks, Mr. Holeman case in point.

Posted by: Jim H | Feb 18, 2008 8:09:34 PM

Finally the media might start believing and give the Clintons some fair news time. The Obama camp is planting people at Hillary and President Clinton's rally's!!! Also they have these ladies fainting at Obama's speeches. Wake up America. This is not high school - we are going to elect a President of the United States. Now more then ever I want Hillary Clinton as the next president. I am scared of Obama and his followers.

Posted by: Faye | Feb 18, 2008 8:36:33 PM

the origin of all this negativity is obvious: a lot of people really hate Hillary. Regardless of whether or not Obama or Hillary has more supporters, the fact that there is far far less hatred of Obama is clear reason that he would be a much better president, not to mention way more likely to beat a Republican in the general election.

President Barrack Hussein Obama ??? I don't think so!!! When will America wake up and smell the coffee! The Jr Sen. falls short in so many areas and yet you fall for this showman!
Yes, he's educated, yet not intelligent...Yes, he's charismatic but that isn't enough to enable him capable of running Your country. As for McCaine, do you really want to swop one "Bubba" for another? I think not...besides, the poor guy looks ill! Which leave Hillary, yes, I saved the best till last...She is the ONLY candidate with the required experience, who has solutions (and as "Bubba" has spent everything, do you need solutions) to start the slow process of getting America back on track.

Posted by: Dianne | Feb 19, 2008 1:10:33 AM

It was a great event in Marietta. I just wish his press people would have been less rude.

Posted by: Steven Adams | Feb 19, 2008 2:49:57 AM

How hopeful is the argument that my candidate is less hated than yours? It's these plebian thought processes that got Bush into office. Gore told everyone what Bush was going to do. And he did it. The top 1% just got richer and our economy is in the toilet. Clinton is telling us that Obama doesn't have the network in place to get anything done. He will have to rely on his cabinet's advice and networking to pass anything in congress. And that worked so well with Bush. I want to elect the person who will be making the decisions, not rely on thier cabinet. Not to mention, while Obama is changing the way things are done in Washington, how happy are the movers and shakers going to be? Happy enough to give thier vote to historic bills supporting universal healthcare (which he doesn't think will happen, obviously, considering the huge loop hole he's given himself. If you don't want it, you can't be forced into it. Like the homeless and the abandoned mom and kids don't want healthcare. Seems a bit cynical to me. Try to win a campaign on healthcare and have absolutely no intention of committing to its implimentation.) It's a lose, lose situation. I don't believe Obama will win in Nov. if he squeaks by with delegates. And if, by some miracle he does, his first term will be disillusioning. The press will tear him apart while his most ardant supporters will either hide, or shake thier head in disbelief.

It goes to show you that you can't keep a good candidate down. Go Hillary!!! It's admirable that her husband is doing his part to help out. As for the "heckler" he was on Obama's side.. it's the type of weird folk he's been attracting.. no class and less brains.

TX is a dead heat.

OH is down to 6% points.

PA is down to 8%

this is with a few weeks to before the primaries.

She's done.
