Bill Clinton: Texas and Ohio or Bust
February 20, 2008 3:35 PM
ABC News' Sarah Amos Reports: The day after Sen. Hillary Clinton added two more states to her election losing streak, her number one surrogate and husband, Bill Clinton, told a crowd in Beaumont, TX that if she doesn't win Texas and Ohio, she most likely will not win the nomination.
Watch the VIDEO HERE.
"You probably like it that this election has come down to Texas and Ohio. If she wins Texas and Ohio I think she will be the nominee. If you don't deliver for her, I don't think she can be. It's all on you," Clinton told the audience right at the top of his speech.
In the past few days, Clinton has made a point to stress the importance of winning Texas and Ohio. However, usually the comments are optimistic and end with him saying a win in Texas will lead to a win in other states -- such as Pennsylvania -- and eventually get her the nomination.
In front of the crowd of about 500, the former President admitted Wednesday for the first time that a loss in Texas could mean the end of her campaign. It was an unusual statement for the Clinton, in what was an unusual morning of events.
The Clinton campaign held both of the former President's events outdoors, using the beds of pickup trucks as a stage. Attendees braved rain and wind at both events to come out and see Bill speak.
In Beaumont, handshaking was even cut short as light rain turned into a heavier downpour.
In Galveston, President Clinton made no mention of his wife's losses in Wisconsin or Hawaii Tuesday night, instead stressing her ability to win in a general election.
"We have got to elect somebody who can deliver the goods and go toe-to-toe with Senator McCain on the national security issue, economic issues and on the issues that affect our future," Clinton told the crowd.
And to get to that general election, Hillary needs Texas help, Clinton stressed again telling voters to really think about their choice and not just be swayed by speeches and feelings.
"If you want somebody who will put this country in the solutions business, if you want somebody who will move us beyond partisan politics by getting us to work together, she is your candidate. If you want the feeling instead of the fact of change, if you want the speech instead of the solution, you have another choice," he said.
Clinton also urged to remember to vote in both the primary and the caucus, in order to give Hillary two victories on March 4.
"This is a big deal. it would be a sad thing if she won the election in the daytime and it got taken away at night - and the delegates - because we didn't show up," Clinton said.
Clinton still has two more stops to make today, visiting Victoria, TX before rounding out the day with a rally in Houston tonight.

0 for 10, and she thinks Bill's gonna save her now. Ask Texans about Janet Reno, Vince Foster, Wesley Clark and Hilliary's "leadership." They remember Waco, they remember the Clinton's iron fist against those who oppose them. Texans won't resist to put her in the place she deserves. Steal some votes somewhere else Clintons. You messed with Texas, and Texans won't forget.

Let's Barack " Sit down at the table" with Ahmedinalad or Kim Jong Il. Experience, that thing he so puts down would anyone other than Obama that you don't make incursions in an unstable, nuclear Pakistan, even to get bin Laden without their say so!

Couldn't agree with you more. People aren't even paying attention to the issues anymore, it's all just about rhetoric. Whatever Obama says must be true, must be what will happen or we're all negative; just drink the coolade and everything's wonderful!!!
Change is coming don't we all know, Sure!!
Lets' see now:
1. Pledge and promise to take public financing, and for campaign finance reform-oops not any more.
2. Change the way we do things, be ethically better-Tony Rezko notwithstanding of course etc..-oops!
3. Call Bill Clinton a racist and mean-spirited, negative etc... for making comments yet Michelle Obama says she's proud for the first time in her adult life and that's okay-not proud when Jesse Jackson ran for president after giving Bill Clinton hell-oops; not proud of anything from the Clinton White House years-oops; not proud of the Reagan years for all you independants and Reagan democrats who are voting for Obama now-oops!!! etc etc etc.
4. Changing the tone of politics: always blaming the media everytime he mis-speaks oops; making derogatory sexist comments and rolling his eyes oops!!!!
The harsh reality for all these Obama people is that they will have to actually think about who they vote for next time because Obama will lose by a landslide come November. Based on all of the above mentioned reasons as well as no foreign policy knowledge; people take a look at what's going on in the world, foreign policy will be big.
Plus anyone who honestly beleives that Rush Limbaugh etc... the true conservative are not going to vote for John McCain if they think a Democrat is going to be elected just keep drinking your Kool-Aid. Not to mention illegal immigration reform-drivers licenses for them!!! The republicans are playing you for fools, like they would never mislead you about something like this ha ha ha what a joke.
Wake up people or you're going to get John McCain. You get what you vote for, if you elect Obama you've got no reason to bitch when he loses to Obama.
Either that or just keep drinking the Kool-aid!!! Don't bother to actually think about your vote as well as follow your emotions!!! What a concept!!!

TWO SENATORS - PLAYING AROUND, OR BUSY?
Senator Clinton, who has served just one full term of 6 years and another year campaigning, managed to author and pass into law only 20 twenty pieces of legislation in all of her six years. Read them to see just how asinine, juvenile and meaningless so many of them are.
(These bills can be found on the website of the Library of Congress www.thomas.loc.gov)
1 . Establish the Kate Mullany National Historic Site.
2. Support the goals and ideals of Better Hearing and Speech Month.
3. Recognize the Ellis Island Medal of Honor.
4. Name a courthouse after Thurgood Marshall.
5. Name a courthouse after James L. Watson.
6. Name a post office after Jonn A. O'Shea.
7. Designate Aug. 7, 2003, as National Purple Heart Recognition Day.
8. Support the goals and ideals of National Purple Heart Recognition Day.
9. Honor the life and legacy of Alexander Hamilton on the bicentennial of his death.
10. Congratulate the Syracuse Univ. Orange Men's Lacrosse Team on winning the championship.
11. Congratulate the Le Moyne College Dolphins Men's Lacrosse Team on winning the championship.
12. Establish the 225th Anniversary of the American Revolution Commemorative Program.
13. Name a post office after Sergeant Riayan A. Tejeda.
14. Honor Shirley Chisholm for her service to the nation and express condolences on her death.
15. Honor John J. Downing, Brian Fahey, and Harry Ford, firefighters who lost their lives on duty.
16. Extend period of unemployment assistance to victims of 9/11.
17. Pay for city projects in response to 9/11
18. Assist landmine victims in other countries.
19. Assist family caregivers in accessing affordable respite care.
20. Designate part of the National Forest System in Puerto Rico as protected in the wilderness
preservation system.
Senator Obama, in his 8 years in the Senate, has written 890 bills and co-sponsored another 1096.
In fact, in just his first year in the U.S. Senate, he authored 152 bills and co-sponsored another 427. These include **the Coburn-Obama Government Transparency Act of 2006 - became law, **The Lugar-Obama Nuclear Non-proliferation and Conventional Weapons Threat Reduction Act, - became law, **The Comprehensive Immigration Reform Act, passed the Senate, **The 2007 Government Ethics Bill, - became law, **The Protection Against Excessive Executive Compensation Bill
Among his many bills are:
233 regarding healthcare reform,
125 on poverty and public assistance,
112 crime fighting bills,
97 economic bills,
60 human rights and anti-discrimination bills,
21 ethics reform bills,
6 veterans affairs"

CALLING ON ALL REPUBLICANS IN THE GREAT STATE OF TEXAS
Last night Hillery said she was "ready to defeat the Republicans" I say we have a rare opportunity to take her on directly, and take her out.
The state of Texas has open voting. We should all tell/plead/beg our friends and family in Texas to "pimp" ourselves out for one day. Vote Obama and sweep that woman into the dust bin of history.
Here's our chance republicans - why do you hesitate?
Like it or not, Maverick is our horse. His nomination is sure. Lets use our vote wisely on March 4th and end
this once and for all.
She wants to take on the Republicans huh? I say we should meet her on the battle field of Texas and give her exactly what she wants - a royal butt whipping. I just hope she dont cry again.

Barack Obama is an empty suit and he stands for nothing. I also think it's a disgrace how Mrs. Obama said this is the first time she is proud of her country. If she wasn't proud of our great nation before then why has she been living here? Michelle Obama is no first lady material in my opinion. The fact Barack said nothing about her comments must mean he agrees with his wife. I think that every voter should go out and vote for Hillary to prevent Obama from getting the nomination because he doesn't even deserve a chance to become President.

Unfortunately it is not enough for her to just win in these states, she needs big wins. Obama has an edge in Texas and is making progress in Ohio.
BTW HRC has someone who was under federal investigation for years and was found guilty of giving false testimony, and was found to be an adulterer, representing her on the campaign trail.
Posted by: Louis | Feb 20, 2008 5:22:53 PM
The truth is the President Clinton is understating the importance of Ohio and Texas considerably. Even if Senator Clinton wins these states BIG, big enough to pull even in the pledged delegate count, there's no reason to believe that Clinton will be the nominee. It would only prove that she had not yet lost.
As one of millions of Americans who have voted for Barack Obama because he is substantive, hard-working, intelligent, practical, and a gifted leader, I can only hope that Ohio and Texas voters turn out for Obama definitively enough to end Clinton's campaign on March 4th. John McCain is already campaigning against Obama; it's time to prepare for the general election!

To Sharon who's trying to misrepresent Clinton's senate records.
Hillary is on the following Senate Committees:
Senate Armed Services Committee
Subcommittees:
- Airland
- Emerging Threats and Capabilities
- Readiness and Management Support
Senate Committee on Environment & Public Works
Subcommittees:
- Subcommittee on Superfund and Environmental Health (Chair)
- Subcommittee Clean Air and Nuclear Safety
- Subcommittee on Transportation and Infrastructure
Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor & Pensions
Subcommittees:
- Children and Families
- Employment & Workplace Safety
There is an email circulating that grossly misrepresents Sen. Obama's legislative record.
The difference is that this email comparing Obama's sponsored legislation and then comparing it to Hillary's passed legislation. In 109th session alone she had 177 sponsored bills
The email only gives Hillary credit for bills where
she was the original sponsor and have also been signed into law. Here are the facts. In her time in the Senate, Hillary has sponsored 21 bills that have
become law
Meanwhile, the email gives Sen. Obama credit for every bill he introduced or signed on as a co-sponsor, whether or not they became law. The reality is, since Sen. Obama joined the Senate (applying the same standard the email applies to Hillary) he has sponsored 2 bills that have become law:
1. a bill that sought to promote democracy in the
Democratic Republic of Congo.
2. a bill that named a post office.

Sandra: typical of Obama supporters. Write a laundry list of items yet not one has or had anything to do with what I wrote or rebuttal for the comments I made. Just change the subject. Not one of your comments replied to or rebutted or addressed the fact that Obama has said he stands for change, for something different, a different better kind of politics, then changed his stance on issues such as campaign finance reform or with regards to his and his wife's comments being okay yet when Bill Clinton or Hillary say something its racist or "the claws come out". Real class there Obama. Nor did it address the comment as to whether the republicans will stay home or vote for John McCain, especially since there is now a news item that conservatives are now content to vote for John McCain, surprise surprise. Again, not that they would ever mislead Democrats to get elected.
You just like to change the subject rather than address comments you don't like.
Again after the landslide by John McCain in November maybe you'll think.
P.S. of course all the great things you mention about Illinois you conveniently didn't mention Tony Rezko. Another great story in the Chicago Tribune people.

Hilary is a modern day FDR. But, big surprise, this pathetic electorate prefers an empty suit.
Posted by: Melanie | Feb 20, 2008 5:58:02 PM
Well we've seen it right here -- democrat for a day. If you are a real democrat, one that wants to win the White House in November, please vote for Hillary. What looks like strong support for Obama is actually all the crossover republicans, who are signing up to vote Obama for a day. Then they intend to go right back and vote McCain.
My hope is we can pressure the democratic national committee to make a Clinton/Obama ticket. If Clinton wins the nomination we can do that...but if you vote Obama, then the GOP wins. There's no way the majority of Americans elect a freshman, inexperienced, no armed services or foreign affairs experience, african american name Barack Hussein Obama to the presidency of the United States during a time of war. I'm not saying it's right that prejudice that plays a role in politics, I'm just trying to counter the republican strategy of helping Obama get the nomination so McCain wins. We don't want to be stuck in Iraq for 100 years, do we?
Please Texas -- vote Hillary.

If you are goign to mention Tony Rezko, you have to mention the 15 year fugitive Mr. Hsu.
Posted by: Louis | Feb 20, 2008 6:09:58 PM
gwojtowy - did you miss where our sitting President just bombed an Al Queada camp in Pakistan, over the objection of the gov't? Apparently, not so naive.
Posted by: Louis | Feb 20, 2008 6:12:02 PM
To devilsndust41:
I can give you ONE rebuttal. One example that Obama has proven that he stands for change. He voted AGAINST Iraq at a time when it was extremely unpopular to do so, and he did it having the names Hussein Obama. Think just a little about how courageous that must have been. I found it highly dubious that Hillary where ever stood for change in that magnitude.
Anyway, I don't want to be polarizing, but when you mention Rezko, why don't you mention Hillary's non-release of tax declaration. And when you mention Michelle's comments (which she has clarified today), why don't you mention Hillary's campaign's comments about going for the other candidate's pledged delegates (cf. DailyKos)
I'm European and I must say that even across the Atlantic your mr. Obama is inspiring. People here are starting to say things such as stopping our own partisanship and put action behind words. To base our decisions on positive thoughts instead of out of fear. The attitude is actually changing. It is amazing to see it slowly unfold. I have in my 35 years never seen such an influence from an American president, let alone a president candidate. This is what I think some people are forgetting. Words from a charismatic person do inspire and when millions of people are inspired, things do change. I'm not saying he's the second coming at all, but he is definitely intelligent and extremely influential. And no offense to Hillary supporters, but she does not influence people outside of the US. And hardly anyone even knows who McCain is. He is highly unlikely to be able to move the global situation in a more positive direction. And I think the US need to nurture its relation to the rest of the world. And I mean no disrespect, I am very thankful for what the US has done for us in the past.

Interesting how what a black man does is never enough in this world. The white woman just has to win selected future primaries to be the candidate,
and those selected primaries keep getting moved back. Will she be saying in June that if she wins Puerto Rico then she should be the candidate? This is clearly coded racism.

Obama is the next Jimmy Carter -- unprepared and woefully inadequate for the office. If Obama is elected, I'm leaving NYC, as it will be hit within the first few months of him being in office. Watch out, America. Obama is bad news. He is empty rhetoric, an invitation to terrorism and nothing more.
Funny how the media pretends Obama is close to qualified for the Oval Office. What a freakin' joke! Almost any governor in this country is more qualified to be president than any of the three stooges currently in contention, but most especially Obama. All Obama knows how to do is talk.
Yes, he's good at talking but what else can he do? I think we should know that before he is sitting in the Oval Office. Hello out there! Watching this Obama snake oil salesman job is like watching the Music Man on a catostrophic scale. Wake up America! Obama is a puff piece. Don't believe the hype.

Martin Hoode, your post was excellently written thank you for those uplifting words about our great Senator Obama.
It is nice to know that he is recognized where you live for the very things I respect him for and why I will vote for him and encourage others to do so also. :)
