Chelsea Clinton Keeps Cool Amid Hecklers
February 22, 2008 3:34 PM
ABC News' Sarah Amos Reports: While campaigning for her mother today in Texas, Chelsea Clinton kept her cool while speaking to a crowd at the San Antonio Community College despite being heckled by numerous Obama supporters and a fervent anti-abortion activist.
"Some of you have questions, I see on signs," Chelsea said, adding "I would like to have a conversation, and if we get interrupted we will keep having a conversation."
Chelsea calmly ignored the chants of "Obama, Obama" that carried on sporadically through the first 20 minutes or so of the event.
It was harder to ignore the man holding the "Democrats Let's End Abortion" sign. As the man continued to shout at Chelsea, a woman in the audience tried to come to the former first daughter's defense by yelling at the man and telling him to just ask his question and stop interrupting.
One of Senator Hillary Clinton's number one surrogates, Chelsea Clinton has been on the road nearly everyday, doing her best to secure votes for her mother.
Chelsea does her best to stick to the issues her mother cares about. Her answers are thoughtful and detailed. But today Chelsea couldn't resist taking a swipe at Sen. Barack Obama during a question about her mother's voting record on Iran.
"Well I'm proud that she showed up to vote on that. Which is a difference, it is a difference," Chelsea told a young man in the crowd, who had asked how her mother had voted to consider the Iranian Revolutionary Army a terrorist organization.
Senator Barack Obama chose to skip that vote, something Chelsea was happy to remind the crowd of.
"I'm proud that she stands up and takes a stand on tough issues. And on this, this is something that doesn't lend itself to soundbites," continued Chelsea.
The former first daughter started the event by asking the crowd to join her in a moment of silence for the Dallas police officer killed while riding a motorcycle in her mother's motorcade today.
"And I just want to extend my condolences to the officer's family and to the members of the Dallas police department," Chelsea said, "So please just join me in a moment of silence as we honor his sacrifice and our men and women in uniform across the country and across the world."
The crowd, many of whom were waiting for an hour before Chelsea arrived, were all eager to get in their questions. Many with raised hands grumbled if Chelsea passed them over, prompting her to pacify the crowd by saying, "I'm just doing an unscientific rotation."
When she was done with the event Chelsea shook the hands of those who stuck around through the full hour of Q&A. Chelsea finished off her San Antonio visit with a lunch stop at a local Mexican restaurant, shaking hands and signing posters with all the lunch patrons.

I spent yesterday debating an educated older man why I support Hillary. With all the issues and experience and rezko connection, this man truely did not know any of Obamas flaws. He could only trash talk Hillary, with no valid reason. I truely beleive he is supporting Obama for the warm and fuzzy feeling he gets from Obama and his oratory. So, it is not just young people that act immature, its also educated older people. I agree with Hillary it is TIME TO GET REAL!

Stop Whining! Now that the USS Hillary is sinking and taking on torpedo after torpedo, they now want the energy and passion of Mr. Obama's campaign to just turn off. Unfortunately, passion is not robotic. Unlike the scripted, yet still boring deliveries of Hillary, this energy is going all the way to the inaguration in January 2009. Be ready for a toast to America!

If Hillary plays Democratic Team Ball, she should be ready for a Presidential shot in about 8 years, considering she gets a little bit more experience under her belt. After all, 8 years of guidance in management and leadership skills, she should have her fully vetted and ready to go at 70 years of age.

Gee Diann, it would be good if that man understood rezko. And it would be even better if you remembered the cattle futures, Vince Foster, the complete failure of her health plan, Whitewater, and on and on and on. I understand that Rezko smells bad. But a similar review of Hil's story is poison gas.

Joris you are what this artical is talking about. Hillary is not boring, if you truely have ever listened to her speak, you would realize it is substance and experience you were hearing. Edwards, if he truely wants to accomplish his dreams for America, universal health, it can only be done with Hillary, and he has said it couldn't be done with Obama. If you have noticed this last week or two, Hillary has been bringing his name into her speeches, and the debate last night. Obama is distancing himself from Edwards. So it might behoove you to dream of another canidate for Obama ticket, cause Edwards would be a hipocrit to run with Obama. Oh, and getting rid of lobbyist and special interest in washington, never will happen.

Yes, BE AFRAID! BE VERY AFRAID of changes to the status quo and the utter dumbing down of America with it's quadry of mental midgets and parrots only repeating what they hear instead of doing research on their own. RON, THE BOOGEY MAN IS COMING TO GET YOU! QUICK, RUN! And don't let the doornob hit you on the way out.

Obama is a HYPE, i cant believe Americans will vote a President just for this HOPE, idealistic stuff! u cant even measure this man's accomplishment-he says things that this stupid people (except smart people of CA, NY, MA, NJ etc) wants to hear & they LOVE it, Gimme a break! Its OVER!-i believe OH & TX will deliver & proove this egoistic overhyped man by media ( media people who are Republicans & fears Hilary againts McCain) is FINISHED! Hillary is a fighter, just sad that the media is just soo anti-clintons, FYI -despite what they've been through u can tell they've raised a Proper Child in Chelsea & that speaks for itself!

jack d, I know Hillarys history, I am not saying she is pure, Obama supporters cannot accept he is not the golden cow that they portray him to be. Whitewater, nothing illegal found against the clintons, issue over with. She learned from her first go around with health care, she is not a quitter, I am proud she is trying again. Vince Foster ? rumor affair, try again.

Young people have reason to be angry with gov't, but there is no reason to be rude to Chelsea for campaigning for her mom. I am an Obama supporter, but this is not something I agree with.
Young people are having tough times paying back student loans taken out over the last 10 years, or were taken away the opportunity all together in some cases. We are attacked by abusive credit card lending and have tons of debt now. We also will have a very difficult time to buy homes now with credit debt and low numbers of quality jobs. We saw our White House handed over by the 90's Clinton's for their Jerry Springer episode during their terms. Bush would not have won if the Clintons would not have lost the congress their first term and handed the White House over on their second. Gore was almost ashamed to associate with Bill Clinton and that cost him big. Gore also got the anti-Clinton voters against him for association. Bush and Hillary got this Iraq War going with their votes and handling in the 90's and many young people are over there paying the ultimate sacrifice while our gov't acts with foolish pride to admit no wrong and have no plan for political success. I appreciate some of the good things the Clintons did, but I also did not forget some of the bad things they did too. I understand the anger here, but it is not Chelsea's fault. They should not be doing this.

REAL HYPE instead of boring, monotone speeches from Hillary. Aren't you Hillary supporters tired of changing slogans after 6 different themes? She doesn't know how she wants to present herself, yet you continue to maintain the lemming foundation for suckas. Mr. Obama has been consistent from day 1. Err, let me see........Someone of consistency or someone who's constantly searching for themselves? Ahh, Err, Ohh, HILLARY CLINTON, they say!!!!!
SUCKAS

I know that Hillary doesn't have much hope left, but you all could be more gracious about winning. Remember, you need us to go to your side and support Obama, without our vote, its President McCain in '08
Posted by: Diann | Feb 22, 2008 6:02:50 PM
OK Diane - Hillary will endorse Mr. Obama as part of playing DNC team ball, because she's a team player, as you are as well. Start getting your mind right and focusing on victory in November. Hillary is done. It's over for her. Time to refocus and rally around Mr. Obama.

Those young Obama followers' lives are too good. They need to go to a third world country to suffer a little bit or let Osama to teach them a lesson. They will pay price sooner or later.
Posted by: Hard | Feb 22, 2008 6:07:36 PM
Those old Clinton lemmings sure don't know when to give up! It'll take another Republic victory to snap them into shape for sure! They'll pay the price sooner or later, huh?
Posted by: Joris | Feb 22, 2008 6:10:50 PM
if I don't vote for Obama, I won't have to defend my choice for 4 years. Doesn't mean I run to vote repub. But I might just write her name in. I like the passion you have for Obama, just be mature about it
Posted by: Diann | Feb 22, 2008 6:12:55 PM
I support Barack Obama but I cannot defend the behavior of these young supporters of Barack Obama who were rude to Chelsea Clinton.
Posted by: mg | Feb 22, 2008 6:16:18 PM
And I like the pitbull, fight to the end, with no chance of victory position you have. That's ok, it's a survival mechanism. You are invited to come over to the light from the dark side. It's ok, gimme a hug.
If Mr. Obama was in the same position in this campaign, you would have been saying, "Why is he still in the race when he can't win?" Simply applying a common sense approach with a passionate twist.

This is in response to marianCa's comment above (Feb 22 5:56:58 PM)
You insinuate that only the voters of certain states are "smart"--those who dont buy ito "idealistic stuff." No one seems to ever mention that Obama does best with voters that probably have more time to analyze policy statements--the very quality with which Sen. Clinton supposedly trumps Sen. Obama. And yet, with this time, access to the Internet, and education, they reject the policies of Sen. Clinton for the supposedly "empty rhetoric" of Sen. Obama.
Please don't call people dumb because they choose not to support Sen. Clinton. It has nothing to do with who one votes for. Instead, choose to be angry that we live in a world where too many do not have the resources or spare time in order to indulge in a luxury like becoming well-versed in the issues. Or, be angry that some who apparently have this time (as implied by their decision to post on a blog) choose not to take full advantage of that luxury.

Just shows how fanatical and out of control Obama supporters are. I think there will be a huge surprise to the dem party if Hillary does not get the nomination, many will back McCain because they do not want to be associated with this hyped up mania. It has been a huge turn off to serious voters that have moved on past their high-school pep rally days. By the way, if you have a good dictionary, look up the meaning of mania, describes many of these supporters.

It's sad to see how the Obama supporters want to ellect his guy; by not respecting anybody. That tells you alot about the candidate itself, right? Ellect him and see the country going down the drain - on the route to Third World nation.
