Clinton Motorcade Officer Killed in Accident
February 22, 2008 11:49 AM
ABC News' Eloise Harper Reports: A police officer traveling on motorcycle accompanying the motorcade of Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y., en route to a campaign event in Dallas, Texas, has been killed in an accident.
At the scene, reporters could see the officer down, after he appeared to run into the guard rail while escorting the motorcade.
After her planned morning event, Clinton commented on the tragedy, saying, "I just learned the death of the Dallas police officer and the devastating accident that occurred as the motorcycle officers were leading our cars to this site. We are just heartsick over this loss of life in the line of duty and I have asked that my condolences be made to the family."
The former first lady called the event a "tragic loss" and expressed gratitude for what "men and women in law enforcement do every single day."
Prior to leaving Dallas, Clinton contacted the officer's family and was able to meet with the wife of the crash victim. Both the mayor and police chief were present.
Clinton cancelled her afternoon rally in Ft. Worth, Texas, but not before saying a brief hello to the crowd who had gathered for her event. The campaign's next stop is Columbus, Ohio where Clinton will hold a "Solutions for the American Economy” town hall meeting at Columbus State Community College.
This is not the first motorcade accident in recent years.
A police officer in Honolulu, Hawaii, died in November 2006 after a crash and an officer from Rio Rancho, New Mexico, died in August 2007 after a crash, both while accompanying the motorcade of President George W. Bush.
A similar incident occurred during the 2004 presidential campaign when a motorcycle officer was injured while accompanying the motorcade of then-Democratic presidential candidate Senator John Kerry, D-Mass., though the officer in that incident did not sustain life-threatening injuries.
ABC News' Karen Travers, Jon Garcia and Ed O'Keefe contributed to this report.

I can imagine how Hillary Clinton feels about that officer getting killed. But when your riding towards a circle curb on a bridge you have to go slow. This officer lost control because he was going a little faster than he should have. I sincerely hope that this does not effect the voting in Dallas for her. I definately would like to see her win and become our first woman president.

It is always sad when an officer is killed in the line of duty most are also in the military it takes a sp kind of people. Go Hillary

This only supports the contention that political candidates should provide their own security when away from their official duties. Why should you and I pay for their security when we have to pay for or provide our own. If they are that worried about personal security let them carry their own gun and protect their own butts!

It's very sad. It makes me wonder what good motocycle escort really serves. Is it more about ceremonial show than real protection?
Hope this unfortunate event does not affect the campaign in any negative way.

It is more for protection than show remember JFK
Posted by: Bishop | Feb 22, 2008 12:48:17 PM
There is no, no, reason nor public interest for any Police Officer to be escorting citizens to and from political event or private court appearances...I ask you? When have you known a large number of Police Officers to escort an unknown average Joe/Jane to a game of some nature or public event? The Police Officials and Local Government are malfeasance in their "orders" to provide private escorts that endanger the Police Officer and lesse protection, daily, for the average citizen. A complete waste of public resources and,in this case, a the sad loss of Police Officer.

Our prayers & condolences to the officer's family. Mrs.Clinton, we hope that you will become our very 1st Lady President, because we believe that you will & can make our country change. Mr.Clinton made a huge differnce when he was in office, and we believe you can too. Our country needs a person like you, you have our support. We are very proud of you, Mrs.Clinton.

I am sure Hillary felt real bad as she was sipping her wine and spewing her lies. Did this stop he for a minute from her scheduled appearance. Nope because her words are just words with no meaning. Bless the officer and his family for the needless loss of life they have suffered for the greed of the Clintons.

I work in DC and we have these stupid motorcades all the time. In my opinion, they drive WAY to fast and recklessly. With all the machinegun-toting S.S. agents looking out the rolled down windows of their black Suburbans, what purpose does a cop on a motorcycle serve anyway??
Posted by: Bob Z | Feb 22, 2008 1:02:10 PM
Yeah, right, and I guess Obama would have held a vigil for the guy. Better yet, maybe Obama could give a speech about hope and inspire the officer to come back to life.
Posted by: John Smith | Feb 22, 2008 1:03:29 PM
Both Senators Clinton and Obama are under the protection of the Secret Service. The Secret Service works in conjuction with state and local authorities. It is absolutely appropriate and neccessary that she would have an escort, not only as a presidential candidate, but as the former First Lady.
Posted by: Lee-Ann | Feb 22, 2008 1:10:32 PM
One of the key purposes for motorcycle escorts is that they are able to manipulate their way through congested areas ahead of a motorcade in order to block intersections. Yes, they are necessary and this officers death is a tragedy. It's an unfortunate occupational hazard. I agree that many officers maneuver too quickly and take unnecessary risks by driving too fast through the city. Hillary Clinton is not to blame for this.
Posted by: Liberty1990 | Feb 22, 2008 1:22:04 PM
He did not die on the scene. Once she was told about his death she DID cancel her appearance in Fort Worth. YOU Obama supporters are not representing your candidate well. No syle. I heard her speak today and she was amazing. I left the rally to go to early vote. I had a tear in my eye when I selected Hillary Clinton for President.
Posted by: cmb | Feb 22, 2008 1:26:09 PM
to Jenny: The campaign is very likely paying the officers leading the motorcade. In most towns, because they don't make enough money on the job, officers will hire out for jobs such as this in their off hours. They are a policeman "on the job" but receiving their pay from someone other than the city. I do not know that this is the case in this situation, but it is very possible.
Posted by: ARSailorMom | Feb 22, 2008 1:30:52 PM
Lee-Ann: Clinton has SS because of her status as former first-lady. Correct me, somebody, if I'm wrong (like I have to ask), but it is my understanding that they are not provided with SS protection until after they officially become their party's selected candidate...therefore, that means Obama is not currently protected by anyone other than his owned hired guns (and I do not mean anything untoward by that comment at all).
Posted by: ARSailorMom | Feb 22, 2008 1:43:01 PM
All in the name of political gain.
Posted by: OverTheTopInTexas | Feb 22, 2008 1:52:52 PM
ARSailorMom, Senator Obama IS under Secret Service protection. You can do a Google search to check. He has been since May of last year. But yes, Presidential nominees are protected under SS. It is my understanding the Mr. McCain is not yet under their protection. From what I have read, he doesn't want it even if he becomes President - a crazy notion I think.
Posted by: Lee-Ann | Feb 22, 2008 2:01:16 PM
As a police officer my thoughts and prayers go out to Victor Lozada Tirado's family. And anyone who is trying to use this as a political jab at any of the candidates should really look inside themselves and see what kind of a person they really are. I commend the Clinton campaign for paying its respect by not holding their meeting. As far as I am concerned any of the candidates, Democrats or Republicans should do the same as the Clinton campaign out of mutual respect for a public official that died performing his JOB. After all even though Clinton is a candidate, she is still a part of the public, which is why she is called a PUBLIC OFFICIAL. What is that saying on the side of virtually every squad car...to protect and serve...that doesn't mean that you do it for just some people...it means all people.
Posted by: vibrax | Feb 22, 2008 2:01:49 PM
Fakebama, you are wrong. All candidates are NOT protected by the Secret Service. Go on the net and check your facts.
Posted by: Lee-Ann | Feb 22, 2008 2:04:08 PM
I have no ties to anyone here. She was not the cause of the accident...if you read the entire story it has happened other times to other presidents.
Posted by: vibrax | Feb 22, 2008 2:05:13 PM
Still waters run deep and I believe Hillary's compassion is deep- She just does not wear it on your sleeve. She is a reserved and private lady when it comes to expressing her heart- but it is there, it is big and it is sincere. Time & again she have been the unifier, reaching out to children, the sick, blacks, Obama, this officer's family. Not once did I hear this morning talk about Hillary's wonderful compassionate closing last night that got the Austin Obama fans on their feet with a STANDING OVATION FOR HILLARY! Those with their eyes open can see the truth. Hillary is a class act and would be a FABULOUS PRESIDENT.
Posted by: votetheissues | Feb 22, 2008 2:11:00 PM
Hillary Clinton was given secret service because she is the former First Lady when they left Washington and Barack Obama was given secret service at the beginning of the race, due to the fact that there are people who do stupid things. Hes has them since September i believe, it was after the first 60 Minute interview.
Posted by: melissa | Feb 22, 2008 2:11:37 PM
Who are the idiots that are trying to turn an accident into a political argument? Everybody knows that assassinations are far too common. Today, we even have kids shooting up their own schools, not to mention terrorist attacks. Anyone serving at a high political level has to have protection. It's an expense Americans must accept as necessary, no matter what the party of the candidate, official or former first lady. Quit turning a tragic death into a silly attempt to make political insults. It simply makes the anti-Clinton people look like morons.
Posted by: John Tate | Feb 22, 2008 2:13:12 PM
The ovation was for both candidates. Hillary lost that debate after being Boooed by the audiance.

Posted by: vibrax | Feb 22, 2008 2:21:04 PM
Many officers work extra jobs escorting motorcades like funerals etc. They get paid privately for that work. I do not know if this was official or not but the other poster is correct. As a former First Lady she has no choice but to accept Secret Service security along with other law enforcement they coordinate with.
Posted by: DCVoter | Feb 22, 2008 2:24:40 PM
DCVoter, in many rural settings funeral escorts and motorcades are publicly funded, or your time is volunteered, it is a part of our job. I have stood on a divided highway trying to stop traffic both ways, alone, for funeral processions. My time was uncompensated.

OvertheTop - I wish I was paid to blog for Hillary... then maybe I would have money for medicine and medical care and would not be too disabled to work outside of the home. She inspires me to campaign for her and my hope is to be heard so we can all have a brighter future. As a dislocated, educated professional who will always call Texas home, you make me ashamed because you are politicizing the death of a fine officer who lost his life in the line of duty.
Posted by: DCVoter | Feb 22, 2008 2:32:19 PM
vibrax - Thank You for your service as a peace officer. :) I grew up in rural Texas and aware which is why I said many instead of all.
Posted by: DCVoter | Feb 22, 2008 2:34:34 PM
Regardless of anyone's opinion of the candidates (I'm not voting for either Clinton or Obama), the tragedy is that a police officer has died. I should have said this first, but my prayers are with his family...what a senseless death, as with any traffic accident. As a motorcycle rider, I have to wonder if the accident was caused by a car not paying attention to a motorcycle...that happens too often. Please, watch for motorcycles, they belong on the road just like cars do. And, peace to everyone...no ruffled feathers here.
Posted by: ARSailorMom | Feb 22, 2008 2:35:12 PM
I was there this morning in Fort Worth. And the very first thing we heard from senator Clinton was about the officer and that there will not be a rally, thanked us and she left. Hillary Clinton was in a certain situation, and that is when you can see how she handled the situation. Time and time again Hillary Clinton handles these situations with class & compassion. That is why this country needs a real competent person like her. Go Hillary!you have our support.

I am saddened for his family and friends.
Posted by: NANETTE | Feb 22, 2008 2:37:44 PM
Okay...I'll give kudos to Hillary for canceling the rally. It was the correct thing to do. But...you do all realize, don't you, that it was very likely not Hillary that made that decision. She has a but-load of advisors that are paid to think how things will turn out....she was very likely told how good it would make her look to cancel the rally. I'm not putting her down so please don't yell at me, but this was not a decision Hillary made on her own, and I seriously doubt she had a whole lot of say in it. That's what she pays the big bucks to the advisors for.
Posted by: ARSailorMom | Feb 22, 2008 2:42:14 PM
I just wish the media would actually read some of those post here by the obamabots and report them to the rest of the nation so the voters here in Texas and Ohio could see for themselves what the Obama slugs themselves believe he represents. I'm not so sure Obama himself would welcome many of you into his camp.
Posted by: Wil | Feb 22, 2008 2:50:01 PM
ARSailorMom: I don't think its fair to assume that Senator Clinton's reaction is nothing more than a political move masterminded by her advisors. She clearly isn't a woman who will allow herself to be manipulated by someone holding any puppet strings. I believe she acted appropriately and with the sincerest of intentions.

Our thoughts go out to the Officers family. Sorry his story is is being used politically by the press for posting on it.
Posted by: Becky | Feb 22, 2008 2:57:55 PM
Obama does in fact have SS protection because of threats that made against him. Normally SS protection for a candidate does not kick in until after the nominating process is completed. But the request was made and approved by the SS for protection for Obama..Sort of sad commentary for our country. Of course Hillary has it because of her previous position as First Lady..And she did the right thing with regard to the officer's death. President Bush did the same thing when those officers lost their lives as part of his motorcades...
Posted by: Greg Preddy | Feb 22, 2008 2:59:05 PM
May his soul rest in perfect peace. Amen.
My most heart felt sympathy to his family and to Hillary Clinton's campaign for this tragedy.

People, I don't think this is the forum for supporting or trash-talking either candidate.
We should express our condolences and our gratitude to this officer for his sacrifice.
Posted by: Evan | Feb 22, 2008 3:22:22 PM
This is definitely not something anyone should have to endure. Ido agree with that. I am still aware Hillary is a Former First Lady and they are obligated to her for life. But why would any of you be worried about her chances of winning in Texas? Hillary supporters...she is NOT the role model you should want for your daughters or YOURSELF. She is STILL married to a cheater. She cannot control her own home, she cannot control the country. This is why people like me are trapped by Stupid America!!!
Posted by: Trapped by Stupid America | Feb 22, 2008 3:37:21 PM
I don't think that it is appropriate to use this blog to discuss about any of the candidates. Not at the expense of the families that are affected by this tragic event. As a matter of fact, I know the family, and I am personally offended by people that are "supporters" of both parties. I hope and pray that God has mercy on you all, because some things are bigger than poletics.

Posted by: Rob | Feb 22, 2008 3:43:11 PM
Posted by: Larry | > The reason they have them, is two fold, because they are high profile politicians that have legitimate security threats against them that they have to have local police assist secret service. the second reason is to keep an open road in front of the motocade because it contains a number of vehicles and personnel including hte SS, the Politician and staff, and media and they are given permission to use the officers to get to destinations quicker and ignore traffic congestion.
the Average joe, is not running for president, is not an elected senator, or a governor, and is not having serious threats of assassination.

What is sadest about all this, is how Hillary is using this an oppty to show her so-called empathy with ordinary folks. However history does not show that such sympathies on the part of the former first lady, are really inherent in her me first make-up:
"Once Hillary even tried to kick an Arkansas state trooper bodyguard who got in her way, according to Clinton biographer Christopher Andersen."
Hillary's new theme is that people like her (and John Edwards, I supporse, since she lifted this from his pro labor spiel) are going to be well off no matter what, but we poor common folk, who she cries for, because we do not have her opptys in life, will suffer horribly unless we "get real" and vote her in as Pres.
I'll take my chances. Vote O, and contribute to the Obama campaign in respect for those who suffer and died because of the bad judgement of leaders like Hillary Clinton who authorized a pre-emptive war in the middle east.
Posted by: Beth | Feb 22, 2008 4:01:58 PM
Hillary's Missed Opportunity. If I were Hillary, I would not cancelled the rally in Ft Worth. Instead, I would start the rally with the announcement of the accident, then have ONE-MINUTE SILENCE with the supporters, and continue the rally with the supporters. By doing that, not only Hillary would have shown that she cared about the dead officer, but also that she was tough to face any crisis (like she mentioned the night before). That ONE-MINUTE SILENCE (note I wrote it in capital letters) is worth many speeches. Alas, a missed opportunity!
Posted by: ablanche | Feb 22, 2008 4:28:13 PM
I can see the wicked Hillary laughing at this incident. She is so out just for herself. Sad but true, I guess this makes #1 for hits she will make while in office (at least that we know of).

some of u people think that hillary is a bad person and u dont even know her. first of all I dont think it was her fault that the officer died in a accident, at least she did cancle her campaign and be with the family and I think that means a lot to the family of the officer that gave his life for what he loved to do which is there to serve and protect everyone, not just for some people, I give my prayers for the family of the officer god bless u all, I will take my chance and vote for hillary clinton that talks from her heart to help the people and change this country around, not for someone like obama that uses speaches that other canidates have used in the past,he uses other speaches because he dont know how to use his own so he writes it down and read there speaches, so think twice before u put hillary down and look what obama is doing and u want someone like that as your next president?i bet when hillary cancled her event , i bet obama took that as a advantage to go and still more votes from these foolish people thats actually going to vote for him without even thinking, OH WELL THATS LIFE I GUESS, thats there choice but a bad one. Hillary you go all the way and dont back down you have our support all the way. oh and you clintons haters you all is just as bad as obama, not caring for anyone but urselves,I dont care what you say about me this is just my opinion on everything thats going on.

First and foremost we must give the family our condolences. It was an unfortunate event. I do applaude Sen. Clinton for meeting with the family. As to the comment that police officers do not do the escort for 'ordinary' people, that is unture. For memorial services in Denver there is almost always a police escort for the family. Mostly motorcyle escorts, weather permiting. They truly are performing their job for 'ordinary' people like me. Again, please keep the family in your thoughts. And try not to find blame anywhere.

I am not a HC supporter, but it was a fine compassionate act for her to cancel her next campaign stop. But I have a reminder for those of you who believe this demonstration of her caring and compassion in any way would make her a good President. Anyone who open-minded at all will concede that GWB showed a tremendous amount of compassion and caring when dealing with the 9/11 families and survivors. Did that make him a good President?

fakebama, you are very quick to judge
you do not know the clints they are good people... you need to be afraid of obama hussien barracka, what does his name mean? is he the anti
christ? he sure acts like it..i fear for our country..what kind of ties does he have in other countries we know nothing about him and his family...please people wake up before we make another mistake.....

The best way to judge a candidate is to keep hatred and liking aside. Analyze their experience, policies and service. Some of you all like one candidate, who does not have enough experience and has just served 2 years in senate. Some of you all hate one candidate who has done good public service, smart and has experience. You all have a generous heart, because of liking, it is not bothering to elect a candidate with less experience and credentials to the nation's highest honorable position and a tough job. Even if we are an IVY college graduates and extremely smart still we do not get hired to the CEO of the company unless we have proven experience. All I see is the hatred nature is making most of you all to do the wrong decision. It is a comptetive world. The wrong decision will have huge consequences to compete in the world.

i took the name so saddened when i first commented on an abc article, because of how saddened i was to see how people treat each other. as i read the comments on this story, the name is oh so appropriate. this is true for several of you, including especially overthetopintexas. i'm a texan too and am ashamed at the venom that is displayed in your comments. an officer died in an accident. it is a terrible tragedy. and his family have, and deserve, our deepest sympathy. your cruel comments dishonor his service. shame!

God Bless the soul of this officer and all those who mourn him. Everyday millions of men and women at home and overseas stand up for goodness to enhance all our lives and for that I am profoundly grateful and forever in their debt.
There is a time and a place for everything and as convenient as it may be to turn this into another Hillary bashing exercise, that line of thought says more about you than it does her. In light of the fact a human being has died here why doesn’t everyone offer her the same benefit of the doubt that people have asked for, for other candidates and their families in recent times. All people are capable of good. So raise yourself above the bitterness of this nomination and care for the man who has died and extend your mantra for hope to include and acknowledge that even those you despise would never treat the death of another person with such a cavalier disregard as to use them as a political stunt.

So saddened. — One Texan to another, some people simply aren’t worthy of hatred. Just put a Nacona in their faces and walk on. ... Cops usually care less about politics and more about doing their jobs. My condolences to the family, friends and fellow officers. Riding a motorcycle is dangerous under the best of circumstances. Riding escort is tough, I’ve done it. I’ve been to too many biker funerals but that won’t stop me from riding. I guess it’s just in the blood. In uniform or out, we’re all in the wind and brothers of sorts.

My thoughts and prayers go out to the family of this Officer. No words can make such a tragic loss any more bearable, but the deep pain they feel is directly proportional to their great love for his man and his love for his family, and there may be some small amount of comfort found in that.

Anyone using this article reporting on the death of an officer of the law to spout political rhetoric should be ashamed. A man lost his life in the line of duty.

My thoughts are with the Officer's family.

It is the duty of motorcycle escorts to keep up with the motorcade... the lead vehicles need to slow down, especially when going around curves. The candidates and their staff need also to ensure that the schedule has enough room between events so that they are not going from event to event at breakneck speed.
God bless all those who are sworn to protect us!
