Clinton on photo: 'Why is anybody concerned about this?"
February 25, 2008 6:02 PM
ABC News' Teddy Davis and Jacqueline Klingebiel Report: During a Monday interview with ABC's Dallas affiliate, Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y., did not flatly deny the DrudgeReport's charge that her campaign forwarded a photo of rival Barack Obama in traditional African dress.
She then turned the tables on her Democratic rival and accused him of using the controversy to distract the public's attention from deficiencies in his platform and experience.
"I know nothing about it," Clinton told ABC affiliate WFAA. "This is in the public domain. But let's just stop and ask yourself: 'Why are you -- why is anybody concerned about this?'"
Clinton said that she found questions about whether her campaign sent the photo to the DrudgeReport to be "really laughable."
"This is one more attempt by my opponent's campaign to change the subject," said Clinton, "From his health-care plan that won't cover everybody, from an economic plan that won't produce jobs, and from a record that is pretty thin when it comes to national security and standing up for our country around the world."
The former first lady argued that there are photos of her from around the world wearing "the costume of the country" she was visiting.
"Every time I traveled to foreign countries, I wore the costume of the country. You can find dozen of pictures of me in different parts of the world," said Clinton. "You can find me wearing African outfits, Latin American outfits, Asian outfits, when you travel to foreign countries, it’s a sign of respect. What does that have to do with anything?"
During a Monday conference call with reporters, Clinton communications director Howard Wolfson said that the former first lady's campaign "did not sanction" the leaking of the photo. But he stopped short of denying whether a Clinton aide may have passed it to the DrudgeReport.
"I'm not in a position to ask 700 people to come in," said Wolfson.
Back in October, The New York Times identified Tracy Sefl as the Clinton campaign's conduit to the DrudgeReport.
Asked by ABC News on Monday if she gave the photo to the DrudgeReport, Sefl, who is vice president at the Glover Park Group, said, "no."
Like Wolfson, she could not speak for all Clinton campaign associates.
Asked if she has contacted the DrudgeReport to seek a correction to its claim that the Clinton campaign is the source of the photo, she said, "No comment."

Why, after all these years, does anybody ask a Clinton any question and expect any answer other than a complete lie?
Posted by: Gary | Feb 25, 2008 6:12:57 PM
I feel sorry for HRC. She has put her trust in sleazy campaign staff like Mark Penn.
Hopefully, someone will encourage her to get out of this race with some dignity.

Hillary's response that she can't know if her campaign is responsible for this photo is as laughable as her Saturday "shame on you" rant and her Sunday theatrics on Obama's message.
Combined with what started with her volunteers circulating the "Obama is a muslim" comment followed by Shaheen's rhetorical question of "did Obama sell drugs" before Iowa it is now clear that Hillary Clinton is practicing a scorched earth campaign.

She has invested millions of her own money. She is not going to throw in the towel. She will go down fighting, divided party and all. Wait and see the riots that will happen should she steal the election from Obama.
Posted by: Jeff | Feb 25, 2008 6:19:04 PM
All she needs to do is to deny that her campaign leaked it. It's that simple. The reason she won't is because she can't. All she can do is try and deflect the question.
This stunt by her campaign is just as bad as anything that the Republicans have done recently.

Why are people so mean and nasty about Hillary Clinton? She's a brilliant, patriotic American and a remarkable woman. Get a life people!
Posted by: allan | Feb 25, 2008 6:20:29 PM
what a slimeball. America, collectively spit in the face of this vile woman's tactics.
Posted by: Goon | Feb 25, 2008 6:21:04 PM
How can ANYBODY respect this (well she says it so I guess it must be true) um, GIRL, any longer??? I just don't see how somebody can expect you to take their lying to your face, over and over again, without you wising up to it and calling them on their shamless manipulation. Oh wait a minute, she was married to Bill so I guess... Enough said. If she's this bad at running a campign, just wait til she gets her hands on the White House, and an unlimited access to YOUR MONEY!!! Frightening!

What I find "laughable" is the fact that Hillary is pretending to be so naive. She knows exactly how this photo can harm Senator Obama. There are already those with speculations about his religion & this only adds to it. The argument that she is also dressed in costumes from different countries is irrelevant. Her white skin prevents her from looking like she's anything other than what she professes to be. Hopefully, the American people will see past the harmful intent of this photo & view it for what it is...a sign of respect.

So, she is going to play gradeschool games with a national campaign. "Maybe I did, maybe I didn't." Who is causing a distraction? Burn that credibility and clout HRC, exactly what kind of support do you think you are going to have in the democratic party after this? Petty, pathetic and desperate ploys. I hope you get trounced in Texas and Ohio. We need a LEADER, we have had enough of these political games to grab power.
Posted by: Louis | Feb 25, 2008 6:22:45 PM
She knew that it was leaked. If anything this little episode is going to be more damaging to her than to Obama. After she loses the next 2 states I wonder if she will do the right thing and stand aside...I doubt it. The campaign will just get dirtier!

Yet even more evidence that B.
Obama is not ready for the big show. What a ridiculous overreaction on his part. What makes me nervous is how defensive he is when it comes to stuff like this. He should be more worried about Farakkan slobbering all over his candidacy yesterday. If he (and his brain-washed supporters) can't handle this photograph, how is going to handle the good stuff (and I mean the real good stuff) that is coming?
Posted by: Robert Marley | Feb 25, 2008 6:23:29 PM
I would just like to remind people reading here, that many of you are still heavily influenced by events and indoctrinations from when you were 10 years old. I know I am.
That is all that needs to be said.

THIS WAS FROM THE GOP AND DRUDGEREPORT WAS THE DELIVERY MAN! END OF STORY
stop blaming Hillary for this. Clearly Drudgereport spun the news to his favor and friends of RNC. Hillary is getting the brunt of this. The images have been online for some time. So why is Drudgereport going after Hillary? Why isn't anyone asking why Drudge decided with this timely fashion to go after Hillary. If obama and the media did their homework you could have seen these images online. DRUDGE GAVE THE IMAGE THE NATIONAL SPOTLIGHT AND NOW YOU ARE BLAMING HILLARY!!! talk about ignorance
Posted by: sheeps | Feb 25, 2008 6:24:10 PM
Hillary, answer this simple question: "If the photo's not a big deal, why did your campaign leak it?"
Posted by: jane | Feb 25, 2008 6:24:28 PM
HILLARY IS A LIAR. SHE IS HISTORY! SHE JUST DOES NOT KNOW IT YET!
Posted by: alan | Feb 25, 2008 6:25:23 PM
HRC and Michelle's failure to deny responsibility for transmitting the photo is an admission the HRC campaign is the source. If HRC did not authorize, she needs to fire the responsible staffer, and apologize to Obama, TODAY. But if she did authorize it, God help her.

Posted by: Jimbo | Feb 25, 2008 6:26:03 PM
This was from Drudgereport! Trust me this was the master mind Drudge who spun the news and the sheeps followed by barking at hillary. She has nothing to do with this. The images can be found on the internet. They have been published numerous websites a long time ago. Why didn't Obama go after them then?
Posted by: I blame Drudge | Feb 25, 2008 6:26:05 PM
How did she know the photo was in public domain, yet know nothing about it ? Odd.
Posted by: Zippy | Feb 25, 2008 6:26:54 PM
Drudge spun the news and the Obama sheeps followed. Wow you are suppose to be college educated and wealthy. Clearly you lack logic reasoning. All you sheeps sit there and accept what drudge says. This was a political job manufactured by GOP to get Hillary to blame Obama for being muslim because they could not do it themselves.
Posted by: drudge is the spin master | Feb 25, 2008 6:28:34 PM
Hey I blame Drudge: Okay then, all she has to do then is say, "My campaign had nothing to do with it."

There are two possibilities about who leaked the photo, the republicans or
Obama's campaign to offset the flyers.
Sounds like Obama is playing the race card.
Posted by: Sam Pirri | Feb 25, 2008 6:30:08 PM
THE IMAGE WAS ON NATIONAL EXAMINER FEBRUARY 4TH ! GO LOOK WHY DIDN'T OBAMA QUESTION THE MAGAZINE, WHY IS HE QUESTIONING HILLARY. Drudge clearly set up the job and well done because the obamanites are sheeps and follow the news verbatim. This has shown you are a cult! follow the leader
Posted by: NATIONAL EXAMINER | Feb 25, 2008 6:30:20 PM
No matter how many times you Hillary cultists want to spin Drudge as the reason this is an issue, all you know damn well this is not a story if YOUR candidate's people don't circulate this in an attempt to stoke some hicks' fears in Texas that Obama is a big, bad, closet Muslim. And you know it. So take your b---s--- somewhere else.

Obama took a film crew with him to film his visit to Africa including this moment. This photo has been published numerous times. Its not a secret and Obama promotes it in the film about him. What is his problem????
Right he wants to change the subject when anyone talks about real issues and play victim.

Well, well, well now..isn't this Madame's same startled, self-serving expression used each and every time any scandal errupts around her? She is so hatefully transparent! Aarrrgghhh! The untouchable, pant-suited princess just needs to lose and lose big time so that we can get on with our lives without further sullied vision. Face it folks, her days are done and I wish she would just take her lying self along with her cheating husband of sorts and head for the hills from whence they came!!! Many of us are simply fed up to the teeth with her stupid, flimsy excuses. Billing records..same thing..knew nothing of how they ended up in her closet at the White House! Whaaaat? She is never aware of anything at all! Ever notice? And you know what? The people who fall for it and believe her, are more stupid by far, in the end. She at least has something to gain from all her lies and loudmouthed deceit, a front office. While those who put her there can only read 'em and weep, in the card sharks vernacular, when all is said and done. The saddest thought of all is that she thinks none of us can see, or have the smarts to hear and process, all the trash which she spews, passing out it to us as truth telling when in fact the real truth is something all together different. So different she doesn't even recognize it anymore! Eight more years of these players? No thanks. Be off with ya and the sooner the better. For "our country, our America and not just YOURS Lady! Bye-Byyyyyye!

Its so easy to spin the obamanites. hahah your lack of logic, intelligence and reasoning shows all of us how incompetent all the Obama cult members are.
I will be happy to see the amount of news spinning when fall comes and you stand alone trying to figure out why the media is against you...hahahahhahah

Oh please, seeing as how every politician has donned native garb at one time or another it would be stupid for Clinton to have "leaked" this photo. And who cares anyway. And leaked is a misnomer since it was obviously previously published. Also, this pic does no harm to Obama but a great DEAL of harm to HRC. So you know who "leaked" this non-damaging photo? I'll bet Barack Obama's campaign. Yes, that's right. Obamaites don't want to think their pure and saintly B.O. could have done this? Well think again. Cuz this photo does nothing but harm Clinton. And B.O. has everything to gain by smearing her and nothing to lose with this photo being published. Think about it.
Posted by: James | Feb 25, 2008 6:32:25 PM
Why do we instantly point the finger at Hillary? Perhaps the Obama campaign wanted to avoid this headline: Louis Farrakhan backs Obama for president at Nation of Islam convention in Chicago or perhaps the Republicans want to see what Obama will do before they unleash a boat load of stuff? This blame the Clintons immediately game is old.

There's always 2012.
Posted by: Jake | Feb 25, 2008 6:32:54 PM
Like Obama ... his followers are so quick to jump to conclusions ... do you really trust the "Drudge" more than a democrat? Maybe you should all start a 3rd Party ... you don't sound like Democrats at all ... it is the Party of "justice" ... not declaring guilt without proof!
Hillary '08 ... all the way for the USA!

Looks like Obama will be the nominee. I'm not thrilled with McCain, but, would vote for him over the two on the Dems side. Don't be so sure Obama can beat McCain. McCain will eat him alive when time comes to debate the ISSUES! The people will see through Obama's policies for "change". Even if Obama beats McCain, it would be comforting to know Hillary is NOT in the picture!
Posted by: Mosstrooper | Feb 25, 2008 6:33:42 PM
Obama has zero accomplishments ... by nominating people like Kerry and Obama you deserve the government you get ... I'm doing a Lieberman and voting for McCain
Posted by: josh | Feb 25, 2008 6:34:37 PM
Hey DRUDGE FOOLS OBAMA: Lack of logic? Okay. Drudge says people from Hillary's campaign are circulating the photo. If that is false, THAT IS LIBEL, and should immediately be retracted.
But no one from Hillary's campaign is denying Drudge's claim, when given opportunities to do so. Even the candidate won't deny it.
So *your* LOGICAL conclusion from that is, "This is all Drudge and Obama's fault for making this a controversy???"
You're a tool.
Posted by: TX | Feb 25, 2008 6:36:07 PM
Here is the thing. She asks why is the photo an issue. The issue is not the photo, it is the content of the email that was send out with the photo. Check out the Drudge Report article for the wording taken from the email. I too would question why this photo was sent out with that email.
Hillary like many others needs to address the whole issue not just the part that seems silly. Get a grip lady and get a handle on your staff.

Senator Clinton, Has become such a skillful student of the "I know nothing about it", " I don't recall any such conversations", etc. She has been honing her skills since "Whitewater" and her "better half" is the best teacher she could have ever asked for. They have brought the "spin" to an art form.

Has the source been verified? What does it matter? Is BO ashamed of what he did or does he have something to hide? Why is anyone making a big deal out of this anyway? Actually it is quite sad that the campaigning has to last this long so all the fodder can be flung. We need a "SAME DAY" Primary for all the states and then have the election a month later. We don't need all of this dragging out. The media needs to stop the spin and only report the verified facts and let the people of this country decide. Rome is falling.....
Posted by: ysn | Feb 25, 2008 6:40:51 PM
Now you know why I think it's stupid for Republicans to crossover and vote for Obama in the primaries. He just might have a chance and the Republicans would be cutting their own throats. If you must crossover, vote for Hillary. She will be very, very easy to beat.

Jake, don't even joke about 2012. It's time for Senator Clinton to leave the national stage for good. This campaign is an absolute disgrace. HRC's pathetic, faux-naive response to the revelation that her campaign has been playing racist campaign games is only the nadir of a gutter strategy that has divided and exhausted a united and energetic Democratic Party.
There really aren't words to express my contempt for what Clinton -- and her supporters on comment boards like these -- have done to my party.

This is not the first time her campaign people have dumped inuendo and speculation into the ether for public consumption. Everytime she comes back with some variation of the "I didn't know" excuse.
That in itself tells us how she would run her administration. A bunch of loose cannons with no accountability.

Good to know that the racists, and the Muslim haters, and the hatemongers on this post are chiming in. It's important to remember that hate is still out there.
Farrakhan likes Obama. So what? I wonder which candidate you Muslim-baiters are supporting. Because your support, were I to follow your logic, should speak as ill of that person as you believe Farrakhan's beliefs should indict Obama.
Posted by: TX | Feb 25, 2008 6:41:56 PM
Hillary has tried everything else, now she is trying to spread the "Muslim" lie. Obama is a Christian and Hillary would not have spread this photo unless she thought it would SCARE people to believe a lie. People of Ohio and Texas, please go to Barack Obama's website and read the truth about Barack's family and religion. The information at this website is all sourced and cited to neutral news organizations and newspapers. The campaign website's "Know the Facts" section contains a helpful collection of true news stories about Barack Obama, so that you don't have to wonder about Internet rumors.

Why are obama supporters mad at Hillary? Was she the one who put on the african garb? And if it was so wrong to do so, why did Obama do it in the first place? Kindly direct your anger at Obama, if you are unhappy with the pic. So is the pic good or bad? make up your mind. What gets me, is that Obama can put on such garb as a sign of respect for the country he is visiting, but won't put on a flag pin or salute during the anthem as a sign of respect for the country he wants to be president of. Every family with a veteran in the family should be offended and furious.

And again, you're so very sure this absolutely came from HRC's camp? It still reeks of a concerted effort to smear HRC as the content of this pic does NOTHING to hurt B.O since she's ahead in Texas, Ohio and Rhode Island. B.O.'s peeps don't want to finally see their momentum streak broken. Why is it so hard to everyone to believe Obama is just another politician and not a freekin' saint?
Posted by: James | Feb 25, 2008 6:44:10 PM
What the photo email note insists is that Obama be slandered as much as Hillary has been in the past. And Hillary has said this herself, more or less.
But that's not Democratic politics; and it is really an odd mix of self-pity and smugness, because Hillary has never been smeared as much as Obama - she just isn't liked. And that's what she does not get - Hillary, we just do not like you, go home.

Are her lips moving?
If lips are moving she is lying.

I am a first time voter (just turned 19) and I have been watching the primaries closely and with great interest.
I would be the first to admit there are some gaps in Obama's platform and some unanswered questions. That aside, I like his message of hope and don't think the experience issue is a major stumbling block. I look at how he has run a superb campaign and figure he can manage the WH just the same way.
Hillary has the historic opportunity to be the first woman president but with all her experience she has fumbled everything badly. Her strategy for victory was deeply flawed, and her staff mismanaged the day-to-day operations.
She is behind. Instead of changing strategies, she doesn't change her message (much). What she appears to do is dress in a different outfit emotionally every day--sorry if that is sexist but I'm a 19 year old female so who cares? She's fake-angry one day, fake-sarcastic the next day, slying disingenuous the third day. I don't want a hypocrit in the White House. And while I know politics can turn dirty, the way the Clinton campaign has handled this photo snafu is disgusting: why couldn't they just come out first thing and say yes we did it or no we did not. Instead, she let the entire thing fester all day and then simply made some demeaning comment about Obama.
The issue about the photo: it is not whether it has been out there before or not, it is in the context in which it is offered this time. Sorry, someone did this maliciously, and if it turns out anyone in the Clinton campaign did it, then I say Hillary Clinton is a disgrace to women and I want nothing to do with her or her brand of filthy politics.

If you will pay attention to the response of the Obama campaign, you Hillary haters, you will see that they are only using this to distract from the issues that Hillary is calling him on. He can't take the heat!!! Everytime, someone goes after him, especially Hillary, he and his campaign starts to whine. Grow up and be the "so-called" Presidential candidate that you claim to be. Hillary has been shown in all kinds of ethnic garb throughout her years as First Lady and in the Senate. Why on earth is it such an embarrassment to you to be seen in ethnic garb that represents your heritage? My goodness! This is ridiculous, and I hope that the American people are paying attention. If he is responding to Hillary's attacks this way, God forbid what the Republicans will do should he become the nomineee. Do we really want a wimp as our nominee? Vote for Hillary, a woman with the backbone, maturity, and yes, EXPERIENCE to lead this nation.

hey TX -- kindly get educated. Libel and slander are only issues if comments are not true. nuff said.
Obama did not vote to go to Iraq because he was not in a position to vote at all, and he has said himself that he lacked the information to make a decision, and does not know how he woudl have voted. Meanwhile, your peaceloving messiah obama wants to attack Pakistan, a sovereign country with nuclear weapons. God save us from Obama.

The Clinton campaign is in its death throes. Someone needs to shoot it and put it out of its misery.

Hillary knows precisely why distributing this photo is a smear tactic; it's because it plays into the xenophobic, anti-Muslim prejudices that many U.S. voters feel.
Obama has been falsely accused of being a Muslim because the Kenyan father he barely knew was raised a Muslim, but a confirmed atheist by the time his parents met. There have been some false extremist, anti-Muslim emails circulating for many months trying to derail Obama's candidacy, and pushing the photo of Obama dressed in traditional Somali garb at this time is clearly intended to stoke those extremist, xenophobic fires.
The perpetrators of this shameful smear attempt on Obama want us to overlook the fact that Senators and other political dignitaries frequently wear the customary clothing of a region when traveling abroad. This includes Hillary Clinton, Bill Clinton, George W. Bush...

Public Domain? That image is owned by the photographer who took it. Copy and pasting it all over the internet does not define it as public domain. I hope the Clinton folks paid he or she who took it proper royalties for the usage.

Hillary did vote for the war, but what did obama do beyond his vote against it? I never saw his name among those who voted against it and I never saw him rally against it. I guess that since the war was very popular at the time he had to hide his real position so as not to harm his popularity. Talk about self-servin
