Clinton Raises $15 Million in 15 Days
February 19, 2008 1:55 PM
ABC News' Eloise Harper and Teddy Davis Report: The Clinton campaign has raked in $15 million in the first 15 days of February. Clinton spokesman Howard Wolfson said on a conference call with reporters Tuesday that the campaign's fundraising spiked after the former first lady told reporters on Feb. 6 that she had loaned her campaign $5 million. The Clinton loan was needed to stay competitive with Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., in the more than 20 states that voted on Feb. 5.
Speaking to reporters on the same day that voters were going to the polls in Wisconsin, the Clinton campaign once again chided Obama for refusing to debate in the Badger State.
“He does not like to debate in a state where he is ahead,” Wolfson said of Obama. Asked if the campaign was bringing this up because the campaign feels more confident about the state, strategist Mark Penn sought to downplay expectations, saying, “Wisconsin has always been difficult for us.”
Since promising victory in Texas, the Clinton campaign has acknowledged that the way Democrats allocate delegates in Texas poses a challenge. One-third of the delegates comes from a caucus which begins as soon as the primary polls close on March 4th. The other two-thirds of delegates are awarded by state senate district. Predominantly African-American state senate districts in Texas have more delegates than the state's Hispanic districts because African-Americans have turned out in higher numbers in the state's last two general elections.
When asked about Texas on Tuesday's conference call, Ace Smith, the campaign's state director, said, "we intend to concede nothing" while adding that Clinton is running "a very aggressive campaign." Smith previously served as Clinton's California state director.

She's the comeback kid! What shall we call Obama? Oh wait, let's ask Deval Patrick.
Posted by: WestCoastMessenger | Feb 19, 2008 2:11:16 PM
Amazing that Obama lifts a whole passage and the whole idea of a speech from Patrick and then says Hillary does the same thing when she says "fired up and ready to go" or uses her husbands lines. There is a pretty big difference as we are talking a few words compared to whole passages and the whole idea.

The amount of money that is spent on politicians and their games is outragous. Not one, and I mean NOT ONE, politician is a prize or good for this country. They are all phony and forget who they work for -- citizens of this country!
Posted by: How sad | Feb 19, 2008 2:19:01 PM
Comeback Kid? Please disease...
Desperate for positive news. It doesn't matter if you can't get votes. $5 million of that is her own money. I'm sure Obama has at least $20 million by now. He just doesn't see the need to brag about it. Most of this money is from states that have already voted. She still has to budget tightly. Money is moot if you have no organization on the ground and your competition attracts bigger crowds. She will just prolong the inevitability of her loss.
Posted by: ROB | Feb 19, 2008 2:20:06 PM
She's going to need the money. After today it will be 10 wins in a row for Barack. And it looks as though Texas is now going to go for Obama. I think Elvis may have already started to leave the building.
Posted by: pt | Feb 19, 2008 2:21:46 PM
Hey ROB, I would say 15 million in 15 days is very positive news if you are a Clinton Supporter...
Posted by: Jay | Feb 19, 2008 2:22:40 PM
$15M in 15 days is not something to sneeze at - however much more BO can raise in the same period. Remember, up to Super Tue, HC had little coming in from the internet. No one is acknowledging HC's own grass root movement - 2 weeks old and hopefully continue to grow.
Posted by: esvida | Feb 19, 2008 2:26:23 PM
Hillary kills me insisting that Barak will not debate her. They have already had multiple debates and already have another one scheduled. Hillary is counting on the "uneducated, willing to believe anything they read" voters. Problem for her is that most people are taking the time to educate themselves about fact versus fiction. The running delegate total proves that point.
Posted by: Shawn | Feb 19, 2008 2:30:06 PM
I don't get Hillary. She says words mean nothing, but she wants more debates. Aren't debates just more words? Or is she now saying that words spat during a debate mean something, but those spat during a stump mean nothing? I need some clarification from Hillary's people. Please help.
Posted by: Kevin | Feb 19, 2008 2:35:10 PM
Maybe Obama can bring his buddy Deval Patrick to the next debate. That would certainly be helpful to him. LOL.
Posted by: Raj | Feb 19, 2008 2:38:35 PM
We need to help Hillary. She is the only democrat with a solid record of change and is tough enough to win in a race against McCain.
Obama is an Orator/Actor and borrows inspiration from truly great men, and offers nothing about who he is? That's scary and McCain will pulverize him.
Hillary is a solid leader who will win the Presidency. Obama is a wild card and no one knows what he will do as President, and he won't become President, because experience does count and count and Obama doesn't have experience.
Do whatever you can to help Hillarty be elected.
Posted by: Mark | Feb 19, 2008 2:39:42 PM
You go GIRL!! ! ! !! ! Win this one- don't let us down. We are behind you all the way! And we are behind Bill, too. We need both of you.
Posted by: votetheissues | Feb 19, 2008 2:41:20 PM
This whole thing is really pathetic Hillary is so desperate that she's making an issue out of a non-issue and eventually this will backfire on her. She's borrowed words and ideas from everyone. Someone should ask Wolfson is he can guarantee that his candidaate never borrowed rhetorical devices from another candidate.
Posted by: Mch202 | Feb 19, 2008 2:42:54 PM
Remember, the words "Fired up, ready to go", "we can do it", etc have been uttered by football coaches forever. Obama has no lock on those catch words.

15 Million in 15 days! Good for her but I think almost all the money has gone to Negative Ads!
Posted by: Peace | Feb 19, 2008 2:43:07 PM
I'm sure Obama has raised at least $20 million. He will win Wisconsin and Haiwai (An ARG poll that came out this morning showed him with a 10 point lead in Wisconsin. Mind you this was the same poll that showed her with a 6 point lead just a day before, so the negative ads have hurt her badly) and then announce that he has raised $25 million in 15 days. They will split Ohio and he will narrowly carry Texas, take a 300 pledged delegate lead. That should bury Clinton.
Posted by: Kevin | Feb 19, 2008 2:47:55 PM
Maybe that's why Michelle Obama is saying "for the first time in my lifetime I am proud of my country".
Posted by: jim | Feb 19, 2008 2:48:17 PM
Mark, what kind of experience are you looking for? I'd say that Obama has more experience than Hillary or McCain. You just need to examine their past to see what kind of experience we should be looking for. And remember, Bush & Cheney had lots of experience. I think we can go from the worst-in-history to the Best-in-the-Future.
Posted by: pt | Feb 19, 2008 2:48:46 PM
Trust me. We who believe that the politics of old won't do will respond. Clinton hasn't seen anything yet. Watch how Obama's supporters and the supporters of ending this failed dynasty respond!
Posted by: kings2beat | Feb 19, 2008 2:50:08 PM
If I was Clinton I would stay out of the news and let the Obama's self-destruct. They seem to be doing a good job of it in the last three days i.e. buying super delegates, plagiarism, not being proud of "their" country.
Posted by: jeff | Feb 19, 2008 2:52:48 PM
I'm the only objective person here, so let em give it to you straight. Michelle Obama's comment was idiotic. But Hillary's negative ads only adds to the image that she will do anything to win. She is digging her own grave and i don't get why she is doing this. She should have stayed on her message that Obama is all talk and no action, without the negativity and plagiarism crap. That might have worked. It has clearly hurt her badly. We are Democrats, not idiotic Republicans.
Posted by: Kevin | Feb 19, 2008 2:54:01 PM
Jeff you've got a good point. Hillary needs to stay on message and stop being negative. She should stay on message, period. All this fluff is just what it is, fluff. She should stay on message, and get that fool, Bill, off the campaign trail. It's hurting her. He's hurting her.
Posted by: Kevin | Feb 19, 2008 2:56:45 PM
Couldn't Michelle Obama just come out and clarify the statement? Seems like she will wait until this boils over in the media and then it will be to late. My husband is a Vietnam vet and is just sick over this statement.
Posted by: Pat | Feb 19, 2008 2:58:53 PM
Pat, she already released a statement clarifying her position. It was just a mistake and your husband is being a bit childish being so sick over something so silly. Michelle has constantly talked about how proud she is to be American. Grow up folks. Please let's talk issues, not high school bs.
Posted by: Kevin | Feb 19, 2008 3:01:30 PM
Of course the Conservative media (or any media for that matter) will not put the same enthusiasm towards covering Michelle's clarification of her position that they did trashing her. It's the American way: We seem to relish negativity. The coverage of Hillary too has been harsh and not always factual. The Press are animals.
Posted by: Kevin | Feb 19, 2008 3:04:16 PM
I think that it's time for Obama to be more like John McCain on the temper thing and 'attitude' thing --and just tell everybody to go to hell. Barack needs to keep blinders on and continue running his campaign, meeting the people and getting the vote. If he runs his white house like he's run his campaign so far, bravo, his white house will be magnificent, because neither Hillary nor any candidate past or present has outrun their campaign over Obama. Hillary can do all her phony talks, catfighting, nastiness, steal Obama's ideas and lines, but she hasn't run a good campaign by any stretch, even if she comes out (steals) the nominee, when it was her in the beginning and all the way the media pointed to as having the best political machine the best-run organization. No way. It's Obama. His campaign has been brilliantly run. He's a champion of champions and an American for all people!!

The Clinton's machines are known for its arrogant advocacy. When Clinton caught repeatedly for his infidelity, the machines had been advocating, it is not Infidelity. They can manipulate anything and they want and get away with it.
Posted by: John Elias | Feb 19, 2008 3:07:05 PM
Oh come on, the Obama camp boasted about the 32 million they raised last month and now Hillary with her 15 million in 15 days. This is as disgusting as the 150 million dollar contracts for the steroid plastic athletes that play X amount of games per season. Here in New York we are building two new stadiums for the Mets and Yankees, to the amount of almost 2 billion. The same is being given to these power hungry, petty, back stabbing, rich politicians, while there are 30 million Americans going hungry on any given day. America continues to sink while we follow as sheeple.
Posted by: Evie | Feb 19, 2008 3:11:25 PM
Did reporters ask Hillary's campaign what the split was between primary money and general election money? I can imagine they squeezed more big checks for the general out of their major donors who had already maxed out for the primary. It wouldn't help them in spending this month, but does give them a talking point today in order to maintain the illusion of popular support and momentum.
Posted by: Eric | Feb 19, 2008 3:12:37 PM
Lookup, why do you say Hillary's relationship with Bill is a failure? They are still married and I bet you are not close friends with them. As for her Health Care plan I think that she is putting a lot of effort into it. That being said I hope that Obama gets the nod because he absolutely beats McCain in the Fall.
Posted by: pt | Feb 19, 2008 3:16:43 PM
Rob: Let me go on record to advise you that Obama could never write out a check for 5 million of his own money because he is a pauper's millionaire with only 1.5 million to his name as compared to the 40 or 50 million the Clinton's have. Oh yes, how about the hundred thousand dollars that Rezko gave to Obama for his services. A crooked attorney for a crooked businessman. And don't tell me Obama didn't know he was a crook. That's why he is in jail now. Why don't Obama get his good friend released from jail? There's a lot about Obama that we don't know yet but it will soon come out little by little.
Posted by: Mariann Pepitone | Feb 19, 2008 3:20:36 PM
Pat, you're right. I could have made my point without resorting to insults. My apologies. By the way, i'm not an Obama supporter. I want the Dems to win the White House and i'm waiting to get behind the winner. The only thing that annoys me is the negative tactics being used by Hillary. It's tearing the party apart. They should both campaign on principles and let the winner be determined by the voters.
Posted by: Kevin | Feb 19, 2008 3:21:51 PM
The American people at this moment in time, at this time in history, need a change. I say to the American people, at this time in our history, at this moment in time, elect a 'tape recorder' full of well spoken rhetorical borrowed speeches and install it in the White House. Oprah will run the tape and all Americans will be sent free gifts from the Oval office Oprah shows.

Look up: Smell the coffee brewing, drink a cup to wake yourself up. How many married people cheat today. Husbands and wives both. Haven't you ever heard of it or are you just a dummie. Lincoln had two wives, Eisenhower had a lover overseas, Johnson had another woman. Get real. It has nothing to do with the way Bill Clinton ran the country. I don't care who cheats on who Bill Clinton was one of the best president's we had. Now we have a big mess and it will take Hillary not Obama to clean it up. He couldn't clean the streets of Chicago without finding out how to do it.
Posted by: Mariann Pepitone | Feb 19, 2008 3:28:14 PM
Maybe Obama will ask Oprah to be his running partner and then they can just buy the presidency and forget the revival sermons and the campaigning and everybody get's .....a new car.
O & O. the new reality show from Washington. It'll make millions.
Posted by: JJ | Feb 19, 2008 3:34:16 PM
Mariann, you need to get a grip. Hillary and Barack are very, very close politically. I think that both would do an excellent job running this country. However, I do think that Hillary would incite the Republicans and the last thing I want to see is a continuation of the Bush-years with McCain in office. Obama has the best chance in the Fall. Obama 2008!
Posted by: pt | Feb 19, 2008 3:34:53 PM
Look, Democrats need to understand that we have two very good candidates running for office. They are both very capable and very good people. We need to stop this fighting because it will end up handing the White House to the Republicans again. That's why i seriously hope that Hillary learns from this impending Wisconsin defeat and return to policy advocacy, not dirty politics. We are all one people, one party.

More petty trivia. Look people, they are BOTH democrats and will do a good job. Quit arguing about lies, disinformation and emotional nonsense. The issus is, who is the best candidate to defeat McCain in the fall? Who can get the most Independents and beat the Republicans? Answer: OBAMA. Let's focus people - stop quibbling and start uniting behind OBAMA. He is the front-runner now anyway, so we may as well stop saying negative things about our side as this is just hurting us. Support Barrack now so we can focus on winning this fall!

Posted by: Boyddollar | Feb 19, 2008 4:05:06 PM
fake: the fist time the media has released somethign negative? C'mon, what other candidate has had their loyalty to the country questioned? What other candidate has had their parents referred to as Muslim extremists? What other candidate has been accused of not being an American? All allegations proven to have been complete fabrications. His friend gave him some lines from a speech that was applicable to the lastest Clinton rant. Where are the complaints about clinton plagerizing her own husband's speech, or lifting lines from Newt Gingrich?
How about her arguing experience whith her 4 whole years in the senate longer than Obama even though he has worked on 4 times as much legislation, and that is giving her credit for the bills she put forth to name things. She couldn't be bothered to be present for the PAA vote even though she was in town! Hillary counts on the American electorate to be mindless sheep, Obama is asking that they start thinking and doing for themselves.
Posted by: Louis | Feb 19, 2008 4:08:58 PM
If Obama's changes are so great, and important,. what are they? why have they not reached my eyes? I read about this a fair amount? what changes? where's the list? hmm,..
Posted by: Rhys Hovey | Feb 19, 2008 4:09:03 PM
I want a real comparison of the candidates positions. there are differences between Obama and Clinton and how they want to accomplish things, all of the information is available, yet the Press seems content on reporting on this hash instead of the issues. I don't need to be entertained during the campaign I need to be informed. How about ABC? Side by side comparison of their stated positions on Social Security, Economy, Iraq, Education, Health Care, Illegal Immigration, Terrorism? Hmm?
Posted by: Louis | Feb 19, 2008 4:19:19 PM
Lets be matter of fact:
Where do the candidates stands since the campaign started:
Hillary:
1. Two senior level resignations from her campaign
2. Funds Deficit in her campaign caused by mismanagement of funds
3. A loss of double digit leads in national polls to a deficit in polls
4. Negative attack ads and statements:
..."it took a president to make Civil Rights possible" ( I guess it didn't take minorities who were hosed down by water hoses or bitten by dogs or jailed or even killed or hung or burned to death)
5. 9 states won compared to Obama's 22 state wins.
HIllary says she has 35 years of experience. I think it is starting to show just what kind of experience she has. 35 years of HOT AIR.
IF she ran the country like she has run her campaign she wouldn't make a good president.
Who would you rather have as president?
Posted by: Chris Wiggins | Feb 19, 2008 4:19:32 PM
Louis is right. Our expectations for the media for delving into the issues are so low that we assume it isn't even their job. But it should be their primary job instead of allowing themselves to be force fed all this nonsense, and passing it along to the public. An in-depth look at each candidate's policy papers should be required for a news agency to be taken seriously.
Posted by: Jack | Feb 19, 2008 4:28:07 PM
BO camp thought that announcing $32M in Jan would cause HC to fold and go home. It backfired and became the best rallying point for HC supporters. I think more money will come to her campaign even in the case she loses WI and HI.

Chris Wiggins - "There was nothing in that quote about race. It was an historical fact, an affirmation of the obvious." (Bill Moyers, PBS, on Hillary's LBJ statement)

Is Hillary taking back her $5 million that she loaned the campaign? Her recent contributers should've thought about that before they sent in their hard earned money. She loaned her's you are throwing yours away.
Posted by: Terry | Feb 19, 2008 4:58:35 PM
HAHAHAHA...The Obama campaign has had over 460,000 contributions in 2 months I don't think they are worried about 10 million. Remember Hillary has to be paid back $5 million.
Posted by: Terry | Feb 19, 2008 5:02:26 PM
And how much of this is from her personal funds.
Posted by: Maverick | Feb 19, 2008 5:12:27 PM
Me thinks Michelle Obama has some "issues".
Posted by: jeff | Feb 19, 2008 5:46:07 PM
I really question the honesty of this. We've heard this number increasing, from Bill Clinton, from Howard Wolfson, etc. But we've also seen where Clinton fundraisers are saying they are doing half of Obama's $1 million a day pace - as recently as a week after Super Tuesday.
So which is it? In 15 days have they raised $15 million or $7.5 million? We'll never know, and won't even have an opportunity to make educated guesses against objective data until mid-April. I have to wonder if the Clinton campaign isn't stretching the truth yet again, in an attempt to ensure supporters they will be able to compete.

Michelle Obama has proven once again that she is nothing but a loud mouth who doesnt know what she is talking about. The woman is a racist and why all these people keep follwing her empty suit husband is beyond me.She is proud of America as long as they keep supporting Obama. She cant say if she will vote for Hillary if they loose. Her husband is only going to run once.Give me a break.

Thanks for worrying about me wasting my money. But, I will throw more money toward her campaign. It's not easy, but it's not hard either when that's 1 out of 2 chances to prevent the coming of the Great Pretender. HC and her supporters may fail but not due to lack of trying.

Posted by: B | Feb 19, 2008 7:18:57 PM
those who say that hillary's campaign is over after she "loses Texas and Ohio" don't know what they're talking about. Yes, Obama now currently has a 74 delegate lead and is "leading in the polls" in Wisconsin, but remember this: DELEGATES ARE AWARDED PROPORTIONALLY. That means that a tight win for either candidate in any of the upcoming primaries will STILL YIELD DELEGATES TO THE OPPOSING CANDIDATE. Even if Obama wins Wisconsin and Hawaii, Hillary will still get delegates, which will narrow the gap; wins in Ohio and Pennsylvania (delegate-rich states in which hillary has double-digit poll leads) will give her far more delegates for her victories than Obama's presumptive "victories" in Wisconsin and Hawaii. The point is, in November, we will see a Clinton-Obama democratic presidential ballot, one which will dominate a McCain-??? republican ballot in the general election.
Go Dems!
Posted by: alan | Feb 19, 2008 7:36:47 PM
Hillary's come out with something like five different messages and catch phrases in five weeks. She's trying to find one that works. It just shows she will say and probably do anything to win. And for those who believe Obama lacks substance and sound policy ideas go to his website, read The Audacity of Hope. Then read Hillary's book and go to her website. When that's all done try to tell me with a straight face that Obama lacks specifics. Obama also has more experience on the legislative side. He was a legislator long before Hillary was. Sitting in the White House as First Lady isn't experience, the experience was her husband's.

Looks Like Obama has more baggage - Michelle. At least Hillary & McCain's spouses are Proud of their Country. Since Michelle is so ungrateful, Michelle can always move, & Take Obama with her. Good Riddance !
Posted by: georgie | Feb 19, 2008 8:27:54 PM
Alan, the delegate gap won't narrow any unless Hillary wins significantly more delegates than Barack. If Hillary loses she will still win delegates but probably won't close the gap at all.

The Clintons have too much baggage that will not help the Democrats at all in the general elections.

Those that are announcing the end of Hillary are being bit premature, as well as immature. She is remaining very competitive, having to contend with not only her rival candidate Obama, but also with a media who adores her rival. The MSM is doing all they can to crown Obama the winner as soon as possible. And the shrill of her internet attackers only expose their desperation. Despite all this, Hillary is still in a very strong position to be the nominee. The American people recognize the great woman with intellect, judgement and ability that Hillary is. She remains the most likely to emerge victorious.

Are you guys so stupid as to believe that politicians say anything original?
I don't care if a politicians cites the Declaration of Independance! This whole debate distracts and detracts from what is really meant to be happning. What I want is a politician that will act on His/Her words.
I personally believe that Obama is the way to go and will be our nominee come November! Now we need to get behind him and get this over with so we can beat McCain who is the real threat to our country!

Republicans switching to vote for Obama? Are you naive? They are voting for Obama so that McCain will be able to pulverize him in the election! How is it that people lose sight of what is really happening? McCain has already begun calling Obama's credentials into question... The republicans don't want Hillary to win because she is the one that can beat their candidate, not Obama. The democrats are going to be sorry again!!!!

Given the propensity for Clinton's campaign to spin stuff, I am suspect of the $15 mil figure to begin with and I know already that it isn't all primary money but being made to look as if it is, knowing full well we can't verify until April. Until then, it's about as meaningful as her "victory" in Florida, frankly.

Change is what you get when you give the Wal-mart clerk $4 for $3.23 worth of Chinese goods.

Too bad she can't but class with all that money. After the last three contests she immediately got out of town to give speeches. She did not congratulate Obama on his victories as is the custom. She did not thank her many supporters who stood in the cold for hours to vote for her. SHE HAS A LOT OF CLASS, BUT IT'S ALL LOW.

I do like Obama... I do like his style... and I know so many Dems that are swayed by is style... but I am a Democrat first, and I am pushing for Hillary, because Obama is no match for McCain! The Republicans desparately want Obama to be the presidential nominee... because of the obvious... if Obama is the nominee, McCain is in the White House! So now is the time for all Texas Dems to put their thinking caps on... Hillary is the only chance for a Democratic president in the White House!

The more of these posts I read, the more I am bamboozled by the logic of the the Dems. Heads up! Dems, do you want a Democrat President in the White House or not? Heck, there are many things I do not admire in Hillary, but that is not the point! I am a Democrat and I want a Democrat in charge... not another Republican!! Go Hillary!!

Watchng Obama speak during his campaign events and noticing the reaction of the crowds...I think High School rally! I remember it felt the same when I sat in Jimmy Swaggerts church and I saw him cry, then preach, cry some more, ask for money, cry, cry! Obama has been very successful in pushing peoples buttons. Obama, preaches, asks for money, psuedo cries and now he tells us he has a dream. I am just astounded that so many Americans have fallen in love with a man who speaks with perfect cadence. Don't you want to see the actual blueprints of his plans? Instead you listen to generalities when he speaks. How can Americans be so mezmerized by his talk, talk, talking of "just words"?
I would want Hillary facing up to the cowards we define as terriorists and that short little man in Iran. She wouldn't be at a loss for words, she would have a plan.
What is happening with the campaign is the same old story. It's "men who are threatened by the opposite sex". Who of you male haters of Hillary can honestly say you do not feel threatened by her brilliance, her energy and her vision She has big ----s!
Why are you allowing the media to choose our next president.
CNN needs to dump Wolf Blitzer, by the way.

I am a democrat but if Obama wins the nomination I will vote for McCain. I just don't trust Obama.
