Craig Admonished by Colleagues for Minnesota Bathroom Arrest
February 13, 2008 7:12 PM
ABC News' Z. Byron Wolf Reports: The Senate Select Committee on Ethics has officially and publicly admonished Idaho Sen. Larry Craig tonight for his guilty plea and conviction for lewd conduct in a Minneapolis Airport Men's room last August.
"The conduct to which you pled guilty, together with your related subsequent conduct as set forth above, constitutes improper conduct reflecting discreditably on the Senate and through this letter the Select Committee on Ethics, on behalf of and pursuant to authority granted by the United Sates Senate, publicly admonishes you for that conduct," reads the letter, singed by all the members of the committee and posted on their website.
Besides the embarrassing letter, however, the admonition carries no further penalty for Craig, who can go ahead and serve out his term. He has said he will not run for reelection in November.
Craig's bathroom footsie is not all that he did wrong. They say it appears he tried to curry special favor when he showed the officer who arrested him his business card. Also, when Craig tried to withdraw his guilty plea, the Committee members say he tried to evade the law, conduct unbecoming a Senator, whose oath is sworn to uphold the Constitution and the law. In addition, the committee notes that he appears to have spent $213,000 on his legal and "public relations" bills even though such use is only provided if the alleged crime has to do with official duties.
This also concludes the investigation by the Ethics Committee and there will be no other publicly disclosed report.

Stay as long as you'd like, Larry. You're the Dems' secret weapon, a la Mark "the mentor" Foley, as a prime example of Republican hypocrisy. Remember how that '06 election went? You betcha...

This guy and his lawyers must think the public is really dumb (or maybe they just don't care) - how 'wide a stance' is posible while one has ones trousers around one's knees or ankles? - certainly not wide enough to play footsie

Admonished? What he committed was fraud and Perjury at best, he should be in a jail cell.

Where's our $213,000 that Craig misappropriated for personal use, unless bootie hunting is his job.
Posted by: Patriot2008 | Feb 13, 2008 8:00:06 PM
The $213,000.00 he spent was money he had that was given to him during his various re-election campaigns. Do you think his donators expected he would use the money to pay legal bills? I think not. And do you or I have a ton of cash lying around, given to us by taxpayers, to pay our bills? Nope.
This guy has no class, no dignity, no style, no morals, no scruples, and no clue.
Is he a homosexual? Who cares…this is 2008. Have at it pretty boy. I hope you sleep well.

Nice that they remember their oath to uphold and defend the Constitution here. Where was their memory when it came to giving Bush a free pass to spy on Americans without a warrant? Or on torture?

As far as how he applies the rule of law, morality, and ethics, he is a paragon of virtue (albeit a discriminatory paragon of virtue -- hey wait, I just think I contradicted myself). On the other hand (or was it foot), when it comes to how he applies the rule of law, morality, and ethics to himself, a much different standard applies. Oh well, what do you want -- just another typical conservative republican...

Is this Perv still a Senator?

So-the man is gay.He has been hiding it not only from his family=but also from him self. This is something no one wants to admit. He must be in a lot of pain.Knowing that he shamed his family and his self. This is a human being who has no control over what "Mother Nature" ditches out.Give the man a break.Carolyn

Senate "publicly admonishes you for that conduct"!
They tried to impeach a president on far less than this man has done. And he is from Idaho. I can't believe he is in office taking tax money!
Posted by: PHVT | Feb 13, 2008 8:36:10 PM
The one thing he can't hide from is hes wife children and friends , even though they MAYnot care I'm sure its hurt them and was embarrassing to them. He may have a hard time looking he wife in the eye now.

You all sound very indignent. What do you say about the others like him in Congress? If he is so bad so are the others.
Posted by: Lou | Feb 13, 2008 9:14:25 PM
BUT, BUT, BUT when the republicans get caught they make thiers leave????? That is why they are better than the democrats.

S it just me or has any body else noticed that as the night goes on that many--E-mail writers seem to have had one too many drinks and are now mispelling words-and that they are very angry??? Carolyn

He should go to jail for all the emotional distress he has caused me. I can hardly go to the bathroom in a public restroom without being so nervous that I pee on my foot!

This is an example of how our elected
represenative's take care of each other
in Washington.
To hell with the people they are suppose to represent.

I agree with C. Walker. I was never really a Clinton fan but they did go after and get a PRESIDENT for perjury. Craig should be subjected to the same (if not more harsher)standards that he himself passed upon President Clinton. This guy is an absolute disgrace to honest and sincere Democrats, Independents, Republicans, Straight, Gay, Bisexual, Black, White, Indian, et alia. He blantantly attempted to make a mockery of our judicial system and look upon us all as stupid, while he holds himself superior. Admonishment is not enough! If he refuses to leave quietly, just fire him and take him away kicking and screaming! What a disgrace and poor excuse for any type of man!
Posted by: FrenchS | Feb 13, 2008 11:14:48 PM
Sorry, it is PHVT I agree with. Anyway, it is my opinion that we all should be outraged at the Senate for this light slap on the wrist. Sure Larry Craig is suffering, (I haven't called him senator because in my eyes he isnt one),because he has been unable to convince the populus that he isn't gay. I say, show him that we really dont belief him! Boot him out of the senate, make him repay a % if not all the taxpayers money used for this charade, and let him keep his health plan so that he might seek counseling.
Posted by: FrenchSoireeDotCom | Feb 13, 2008 11:25:29 PM
if he is a gay man or not is not the issue. the issue is he broke the law. And lied. You know he keeps saying i am not gay. He likes to act out with men. so you know. what i don't like is what if a child was in there and he would have made contact with someone else. I mean come on can't he take someone to a hotel. Anyway I'm glad he did'nt get what he wanted...

The aclu imbicles that defended Craig assert that sex in a public bathroom is "free speech". By loosing this argument Craig will have done more to damage these pervs than any legistlation he may have passed as a US senator. You go girl.

slimmy slimmy slimmy scummy man...a disgrace to all Americans.
Posted by: MrWright2U | Feb 14, 2008 3:16:35 AM
How many terrorists slipped by detection while the police were patrolling the men's room?
What's the big deal?
If confronted my an amorous guy, just say, "No thanks, I'm not that way."
There's no need to panic.
Posted by: Joe Monte | Feb 14, 2008 4:44:01 AM
who is surprised that this republican scum bag is not getting punished... he should have been kicked out. just imagine if he had been a democrat! they would have ruined him. same old BS. there are over 200 republican representatives and senators across the country that have been indicted, probed, investigated, convicted of/on corruption and illegal activities, bribing, etc... AND EXCEPT FOR A FEW, THEY HAVEN'T BEEN PUNISHED EITHER...
Posted by: tulcak | Feb 14, 2008 6:27:28 AM
Another example of a so-called "Family-values" conservative war-mongering republican.... Get them all out of the Senate (and the country)
Posted by: DBi | Feb 14, 2008 6:31:31 AM
Why do they even have a Senate ethics committee? What does a Senator have to do in order to be brought befor judicial process? Rape and murder? Larry Craig is a criminal and it's a shame this democratic Senate majority once again rolls over for the republicans. Harry Reid is a disgrace!

Come on Larry, in a bathroom at a major airport of all places. Is it conincidental that of all the bathrooms at this airport, you end up here which is the one to visit between flights for extracurricular activites.
Posted by: Mike | Feb 14, 2008 8:33:21 AM
He is a shining example of GOP Conservatism.
Posted by: Citizen1960 | Feb 14, 2008 8:35:10 AM
I'm just about speechless. They should have had a public hearing like the Clemens affair. At least give us some entertainment value. He's a sorry excuse for a man.
Posted by: Captain Kangaroo | Feb 14, 2008 9:36:46 AM
Captn, I completely agree. We need a full renactment, with a lifesize model of the stall. I can definitely see why he was cruising airport bathrooms though -- he's really creepy looking. I'll bet his hands are really cold and clammy....
Posted by: Rex Galella | Feb 14, 2008 10:36:51 AM
OK folks, here's the reality. I know we've all sat in a stall since this incident and tried to see how far our legs reached to the side. How many of easily reached into the next stall? This man was trying to do exactly what he was busted for. He was trying to get sex in a public men's room. The man is gay, no two ways about it. And don't feel sorry for his wife. I'm guessing she knew all along. Why do you think they adopted their children? Larry, I hope you're reading this. YOU'RE A CLOSET CASE!!!!and a sick one at that!!
Posted by: dk | Feb 14, 2008 11:35:31 AM
God Bless his wife who has to now live with the knowledge that LARRY plays bathroom scrabble with strangers then runs home to smooch on the MRS.....sad is it not?????
Posted by: daddyblue | Feb 14, 2008 11:59:54 AM
and virtually EVERYONE in Idaho is humiliated beyond words, except this jerk, whose arrogance and sense of entitlement are breathtaking ...
Posted by: ac | Feb 14, 2008 12:56:06 PM
If what this creep did isn't criminal, why does law enforcement all over the country arrest prostitutes and those seeking their services? What a double standard!
Posted by: ac | Feb 14, 2008 1:01:29 PM
"They say it appears he tried to curry special favor when he showed the officer who arrested him his business card."
Is that premium anything like the free donuts and coffee cops get White Castle?

ABC News: "...the letter, singed by all the members..." - Um, so the members 'sang' the letter?!? - Or did they 'singe' it, by burning the edges, perhaps?!? Somebody please go wake up the editor!

I am from Idaho, and I wish Craig would step down, or be pushed out of office. He has failed his family, friends and the people of Idaho as well as the United States. I am not sure what he feels he can do by keeping his position. Not too many people will trust him, his word is not good. I think it would be good for Craig to just step down and go back into the bathroom he came out of.
Posted by: flo jo | Feb 14, 2008 2:22:37 PM
Carolyn Walker--I would have some compassion for Mr. Craig as well but for one thing--while he was indulging his sexual preferences, he was publicly condemning that very preference and seeking to deny others with the same preference the protection of Law. I have pity for human frailty not for gross hypocrisy!
Posted by: twalker742 | Feb 14, 2008 2:44:39 PM
Maybe we all should print up business cards that say SENATOR and go take up our seats in the place and do a job. Anybody doing anything for their paycheck up there? Judicious LEAHY, did Cheeny scare you with that act he wanted to try on you?????
Posted by: daddyblue | Feb 14, 2008 3:16:17 PM
