Craig Admonished by Colleagues for Minnesota Bathroom Arrest
February 13, 2008 7:12 PM
ABC News' Z. Byron Wolf Reports: The Senate Select Committee on Ethics has officially and publicly admonished Idaho Sen. Larry Craig tonight for his guilty plea and conviction for lewd conduct in a Minneapolis Airport Men's room last August.
"The conduct to which you pled guilty, together with your related subsequent conduct as set forth above, constitutes improper conduct reflecting discreditably on the Senate and through this letter the Select Committee on Ethics, on behalf of and pursuant to authority granted by the United Sates Senate, publicly admonishes you for that conduct," reads the letter, singed by all the members of the committee and posted on their website.
Besides the embarrassing letter, however, the admonition carries no further penalty for Craig, who can go ahead and serve out his term. He has said he will not run for reelection in November.
Craig's bathroom footsie is not all that he did wrong. They say it appears he tried to curry special favor when he showed the officer who arrested him his business card. Also, when Craig tried to withdraw his guilty plea, the Committee members say he tried to evade the law, conduct unbecoming a Senator, whose oath is sworn to uphold the Constitution and the law. In addition, the committee notes that he appears to have spent $213,000 on his legal and "public relations" bills even though such use is only provided if the alleged crime has to do with official duties.
This also concludes the investigation by the Ethics Committee and there will be no other publicly disclosed report.

How many terrorists slipped by detection while the police were patrolling the men's room?
What's the big deal?
If confronted my an amorous guy, just say, "No thanks, I'm not that way."
There's no need to panic.

who is surprised that this republican scum bag is not getting punished... he should have been kicked out. just imagine if he had been a democrat! they would have ruined him. same old BS. there are over 200 republican representatives and senators across the country that have been indicted, probed, investigated, convicted of/on corruption and illegal activities, bribing, etc... AND EXCEPT FOR A FEW, THEY HAVEN'T BEEN PUNISHED EITHER...

Another example of a so-called "Family-values" conservative war-mongering republican.... Get them all out of the Senate (and the country)

Why do they even have a Senate ethics committee? What does a Senator have to do in order to be brought befor judicial process? Rape and murder? Larry Craig is a criminal and it's a shame this democratic Senate majority once again rolls over for the republicans. Harry Reid is a disgrace!

Come on Larry, in a bathroom at a major airport of all places. Is it conincidental that of all the bathrooms at this airport, you end up here which is the one to visit between flights for extracurricular activites.

He is a shining example of GOP Conservatism.

I'm just about speechless. They should have had a public hearing like the Clemens affair. At least give us some entertainment value. He's a sorry excuse for a man.

Captn, I completely agree. We need a full renactment, with a lifesize model of the stall. I can definitely see why he was cruising airport bathrooms though -- he's really creepy looking. I'll bet his hands are really cold and clammy....

OK folks, here's the reality. I know we've all sat in a stall since this incident and tried to see how far our legs reached to the side. How many of easily reached into the next stall? This man was trying to do exactly what he was busted for. He was trying to get sex in a public men's room. The man is gay, no two ways about it. And don't feel sorry for his wife. I'm guessing she knew all along. Why do you think they adopted their children? Larry, I hope you're reading this. YOU'RE A CLOSET CASE!!!!and a sick one at that!!

God Bless his wife who has to now live with the knowledge that LARRY plays bathroom scrabble with strangers then runs home to smooch on the MRS.....sad is it not?????

and virtually EVERYONE in Idaho is humiliated beyond words, except this jerk, whose arrogance and sense of entitlement are breathtaking ...
Posted by: ac | Feb 14, 2008 12:56:06 PM
If what this creep did isn't criminal, why does law enforcement all over the country arrest prostitutes and those seeking their services? What a double standard!

"They say it appears he tried to curry special favor when he showed the officer who arrested him his business card."
Is that premium anything like the free donuts and coffee cops get White Castle?

ABC News: "...the letter, singed by all the members..." - Um, so the members 'sang' the letter?!? - Or did they 'singe' it, by burning the edges, perhaps?!? Somebody please go wake up the editor!

I am from Idaho, and I wish Craig would step down, or be pushed out of office. He has failed his family, friends and the people of Idaho as well as the United States. I am not sure what he feels he can do by keeping his position. Not too many people will trust him, his word is not good. I think it would be good for Craig to just step down and go back into the bathroom he came out of.
Posted by: flo jo | Feb 14, 2008 2:22:37 PM
Carolyn Walker--I would have some compassion for Mr. Craig as well but for one thing--while he was indulging his sexual preferences, he was publicly condemning that very preference and seeking to deny others with the same preference the protection of Law. I have pity for human frailty not for gross hypocrisy!

Maybe we all should print up business cards that say SENATOR and go take up our seats in the place and do a job. Anybody doing anything for their paycheck up there? Judicious LEAHY, did Cheeny scare you with that act he wanted to try on you?????
