Defense Sec. Gates Breaks Shoulder from Slipping on Ice
February 13, 2008 11:10 AM
ABC News' Luis Martinez Reports: The Washington D.C. area endured an ice storm last night that led to big traffic pile-ups, major traffic delays and anecdotal evidence that quite a few people took some major slips on the ice. It would appear that U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates was one of those casualties.
He is at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland this morning for treatment of a broken right shoulder he suffered after slipping on the ice in front of his home last night.
A Defense official says Gates came to work at the Pentagon Wednesday morning and was then checked out by doctor. The recommendation was made that he should be sent to the medical center at Bethesda where it was determined that he had suffered a broken right shoulder.
It is unclear what further treatment he will require or how much longer he will remain at the hospital.
Pentagon spokesman Bryan Whitman told reporters Wednesday that the Secretary continues to exercise his duties as Secretary of Defense.
First word of the Secretary's injury came this morning when he did not appear at a congressional budget hearing.
The Pentagon's advisory e-mails and website had this information:
"Secretary Robert Gates will not appear before the House Appropriations Committee as originally scheduled today due to a fracture to his right shoulder sustained when he slipped on some ice. Deputy Secretary Gorden England will testify in his place on the Defense fiscal 2009 Budget and Secretary of the Army, Pete Geren will be the lead DoD witness before the Senate Armed Services Committee on improvements in the care and management of wounded and ill service members. Secretary Gates has been examined by a physician and is receiving treatment for this injury. He continues to perform all other duties and responsibilities of his position."
Whitman says it's too soon to determine if he will require surgery for his injury and DoD will make appropriate notifications to the press if there are developments in his treatment.
Gates was scheduled to have a weekly news conference tomorrow afternoon with Adm. Mullen. Whitman says the likelihood of his making that commitment has dropped.
