Ellen Drops in on Clinton Event

February 25, 2008 8:41 PM

ABC News' Eloise Harper Reports: Ellen Degeneres appeared via satellite at presidential contender Sen. Hillary Clinton's low-dollar fundraiser in Washington DC, surprising the audience, and perhaps giving Clinton a boost at a time when all of the endorsements and momentum seems to be swinging towards her rival Barack Obama. Clinton was reciting her stump speech to a very young and energetic audience– when the screen behind Clinton turned into a feed of Ellen interrupting and saying she had a few questions.

Watch the VIDEO HERE.

"I have said I have a problem with glitter" Ellen said, "It should be banned. It doesn’t warn you, there’s glitter on your fingers, there's glitter everywhere, you open the card you open the wrapping paper, will you put a ban on glitter?"

Clinton suggested a "ban glitter for anyone over twelve." Ellen applauded Clinton's ability to put forth solutions – which put a big smile on Senator Clinton's face.

"What needs to happen to change the momentum?" Ellen asked. Clinton responded, perhaps making a small gaffe or an intended point saying "well were going win Ohio and Michigan!!" Clinton realized her mistake (or was it?) saying "wait, Ohio and Texas…I already won Michigan!" Ellen asked if it was a really important thing now – Clinton sarcastically remarked "I think it ranks right up there with banning glitter."

Ellen referenced the Saturday Night Live skit which illustrated Obama getting lighter media scrutiny than Clinton. ‘"Do you think you are given a harder time than Barack because you are a woman.?" Clinton, clearly agreeing said "Well, nobody has ever asked me if I want an extra pillow during a debate."

"What can you supporters do for you," Ellen asked, to which Clinton responded that she needed money and volunteers. Clinton invited Ellen to Texas…and Ellen wasn’t sure "I don’t know if they would let me out of my job, but Id love to go…maybe ill just do this ill interrupt everywhere you go."

Ellen closed by saying "help her raise those funds - that would be a great help as well."

Ellen aside, Sen. Obama, D-Ill., has a big time talkshow surrogate of his own - Oprah Winfrey.

Instead of Barack verses Hillary at the next debate, perhaps the talk show powerhouses could duke-it-out for their respective candidates? There's a sure way to have the highested rated debate in history.

Is it me or do others also see so much of what Hillary does seems like a page right out of the Obama playbook only mangled in its execution? Did I need to know the Ellen-Hillary show can be so banal? It's like that song about "anything I can do you can do better" where she doesn't get that she reversed it.

Posted by: SE Croft | Feb 25, 2008 8:53:47 PM

I really enjoy Ellen. I am SOOOO glad she is supporting Hillary

Posted by: Lindy | Feb 25, 2008 9:07:07 PM

SE Croft,
Don't you Obamaphiles get it? Everything she does is wrong, according to you, and everything he does is right. I'd like to do a study on this campaign, blinding the comments to a panel of the press. I bet a thousand bucks that if the speaker was identified as Hillary (even if it wasn't), they would denigrate the remarks, but if identifed as Obama (even if Hillary), they would cheer them. It is absolutely disgusting to see how this woman has been treated in this campaign. Women everywhere should be outraged.

Hillary is so FAKE, Phony, and Mean it's unbelievable.

I remember Ellen crying about a Dog and we found out she had done it on a taped show - and it was contrived.

Birds of a Feather.....

Posted by: THEBIGWOODS | Feb 25, 2008 9:37:34 PM

`
I am so honored, Absolutely HONORED to be sitting next to Barack Obama -- 48 hrs later - SHAME ON you Barack Obama!

Look for Hillary to Cry again on Primary day or Eve again. She's done it in four different states so far and always on the day or the eve of the Primary.

The woman has taken insincerity to a new level!

So No to Dirty Politics and cheap lies!

Posted by: THEBIGWOODS | Feb 25, 2008 9:40:46 PM

I wish more celebrities would get out there and campaign for Hillary! Thanks Ellen!!!

Posted by: mjcaway | Feb 25, 2008 10:06:01 PM

Enough with the dirty politics that Mrs. Clinton is playing. She has lost any respect that I had for her. And I continue to be amazed at the racist things that her supporters are willing to say. Is this where our country is going? Is this the Democratic party? I am so ashamed that Hillary Clinton and her most rabid supporters claim to be members of the Democratic party that I love.

It is past time for Hillary to apologize to our party and to our nation and then to quit the primary while there is still a chance that we can begin to respect her again.

Posted by: Dennis | Feb 25, 2008 10:23:04 PM

When SNL had the skid that Brian Williams told DNC debaters that they don't matter because the media only was looking at Hillary, I didn't hear her or any of you Hil supporters cry foul. Talking about double standards. Since this is the theme for Hil supporters now, then ask yourself why you didn't have problem when Hillary was the favorite!

And ask yourself again, how did she go from the favorite to the America's most unwanted?

Exit gracefully, Hillary, if you treasure this party. Otherwise, you are proving the suspicions about you and your husband - you care about no one, no party, no country, but yourself.

Posted by: Jen | Feb 25, 2008 10:25:52 PM

God bless you, Ellen! I am so glad of you and all the people who are supporting Hillary. We've had enough of the Obama media bias. Hillary '08!

Posted by: Jodi | Feb 25, 2008 10:45:41 PM

YaaaaY! I'm really glad that Ellen is a Clinton supporter. Unlike Oprah who hits you over the head with how smart she is (????), Ellen has authentic charm - she doesn't pretend to be anything other than who she is. How refreshing.

Please everybody, contact SNL's network and let them know how mad you are that they removed Tina Fey's piece and complain about their biased coverage. I mean - Tim Russert's infomercial on Sunday for Obama - how slanted can they be!

Go Hillary.

Posted by: . | Feb 25, 2008 10:48:40 PM

The Hillary bashing started the day Bill Clinton took office as President. How dare Hillary have a brain and not be content to sit in the background and bake cookies! The right wing radio talk show hosts set out to destroy her and to this day have not let up. Unfortunately their propaganda repeated often enough infects the rest of the population. You now see the media and the Obama fanatics using the same tactics. Don't dare be a woman who is strong with a mind of your own or you may be the next one they go after. The Dixie Chicks dared to speak out and they tried to destroy them. Did they go after any men who spoke out against the war? It's time women banded together!! Thank you Ellen for standing for Hillary. People have questioned if Oprah is a traitor to women and I say YES!!!

Posted by: Firefighter | Feb 25, 2008 11:18:00 PM

I like Ellen. I saw her on stage in D.C. about 15 years ago. Very funny show. Unfortunately she's backing the wrong candidate in this one.

Posted by: Paul | Feb 25, 2008 11:19:10 PM

I think some of you folks must be in a room with too little ventilation. When you begin to think that Hillary Clinton is anyone's victim, it is time to open the doors and windows and breathe some clean air.
Hillary as a victim is about as likely as Bill being a celebate.
Do none of you people actually remember the '90s?
These blogs prove the point. Division, distrust, blatant hatred of those not on "our side"....The "let's get them before they get us mentality"....ah, the Clinton years.
Boy, I sure am excited to recapture that wonderful period of history....NOT!
All you do with this hate is split the party and leave it wide open for McCain. At this point, if Obama doesn't get the nod, I will turn away from three decades of democrat voting and give the old guy a try. He may be quirky, but it sure beats the alternative.

Posted by: Chip | Feb 25, 2008 11:30:39 PM

Actually, Firefighter, if you want a woman with a head on her shoulders, we've literally got millions in the USA. And very few of them got duped by George Bush into authorizing a useless war that killed 4000 american kids, maimed 60,000 and wasted 500 billion dollars for nothing. Nope. Hillary ain't nothing special, and the fact that she can be so easily fooled by George Bush is beyond frightening. That's like getting tricked a squirrel. Embarrassing.

Posted by: Kansas Jack | Feb 25, 2008 11:36:41 PM

Let's get back to critical thinking people and stop listening to all teh rhetoric and hype.

Look at these two candidates as two people who are applying for a job. Look at their experience and qualifications. Because this is not just any job, these people are running for the job that influences the world and the lives of every one of us. This is not a game.

Posted by: Kristin | Feb 25, 2008 11:41:20 PM

Thank you, Ellen!

Go Tina Fey! SNL got it right last night. The media has been hypnotized by Obama. And I'm not sure why. I've seen him speak. Have we all become drones who cannot think freely? Are we looking to have our souls saved? Sounds like Obama belongs in evalgelism, not in the White House.

Posted by: John | Feb 25, 2008 11:43:28 PM

Did Ellen cry about a dog again? Yet another self absorbed person who doesn't cry at the suffering of others but only when they are down.

Posted by: Max McGloin | Feb 26, 2008 12:15:58 AM

Chip, it appears as though you one on your shoulder. Backing one's candidate is not hate, it's called support. Making an argument is rhetoric, which Senator Obama has done quite well by the way. If someone makes rhetorical statements about the legitimacy of Mr. Obama's candidacy it is not hate towards him. I just do not agree with him making a move for the presidency with so little experience. Hate is leaving your political party of thirty years because a woman is running for the nomination. Sexism is hate and it appears alive and well with the Obamites.

As for the Clinton years, they were good. Yes, they were filled with some political turmoil and more than undesirable Lewinksi headlines, but beneath the veil of the Clinton Haters vs. the Clinton Lovers' War were good times. The economy was in good shape. There were no major military conflicts that drove us to war. The poor had a voice. I would hate to think that you would have rather lived through the Bush years over the Clinton ones. If you want to leave the party, go right ahead. Guess what, I'm not a Democrat so your threat is truly idle. I'm an independent voter who backs CLINTON.

And Kansas Jack, Hillary was not the only one fooled. One senator cannot authorize a war and one senator cannot withdraw an army. Two thirds of Congress was fooled, which means that two thirds of our government is inadequate to run the country in your opinion. She and the rest were fooled by CIA reports, not George Bush. Why don't you concentrate on the rest and leave the best candidate still in the race alone so she can do what she does best, get things done.

Posted by: Adrian | Feb 26, 2008 12:22:34 AM

I am not sexist as I am a woman and I certainly don't think backing a candidate needs to turn into an ugly free for all with a win at any cost mentality. That is not support. I was around in the 90's and it was a fight constantly between both sides of the aisle....As to experience, what does she have except being the First Lady and some years in the Senate? There is nothing in that which makes her any more prepared than Senator Obama except perhaps knowing what fork to use for different dinner courses. If experience were the deciding factor, it still comes back to the undeniable fact that she voted to give George Bush the power to go to war without reading the damn document and then refuses to say she made a mistake. It didn't matter if Bush lied or not, she should have had the sense to know not to give the idiot the power to invade Iraq. You can't get past that fact. As to leaving the democratic party...I didn't say that. I said I would vote for McCain. Then vote my state dems. Trust me, a lot of Obama dems will do the same.

Posted by: Chip | Feb 26, 2008 1:37:40 AM

Way to go Ellen! You are a strong, smart woman and you believe that Hillary will lead our country in a better direction. I couldn;t agree more.

I am impressed by Hillary's experience and toughness - she will roll up her sleeves and get things done.

"Is it me or do others also see so much of what Hillary does seems like a page right out of the Obama playbook only mangled in its execution?"

==================
How true! When Hillary revised her website, I was shaking my head in amazement. The colors are more similar to Obama's. And guess what? Hillary's revamped website has an intro page not unlike Obama's with her picture on itt (Obama ha a family pic) asking peoplee to sign up or skip to the site. She didn't have anything like that before.

She is one devious cunning lady and very bold with her lies.

She gets her aides to distribute Obama's picture, then turn around and accuse Obama of divisiveness.

She accuses Obama of plagiarism and at then end the same debate with words lifted from John Edwards and her husband.

And what's this about 'not letting Obama's war chest' let him win the election. Of course it is. If Obama is is no good, then money won't come in. So him having a bigger war chest means he's getting bigger support.

Clinton had a bigger one but now she is in debt. Oh yeah, and loaning money to her campaign with interest higher than she's getting from the bank. Riiight.

Posted by: girlie | Feb 26, 2008 1:51:58 AM

Hillary lost me years ago, when she took her cheating husband back. I know she wants only to do good for the American people, but I just don't respect her.

Posted by: Keith R | Feb 26, 2008 2:44:52 AM

Keith, life is a funny thing. It so darn easy for you or me to judge Hillary in this matter, but anyone who lived a bit knows how hard it is to break up a family. I know because I've walked down this road and I wish it on no man or woman ever. You never quite get over something like this, believe me.

Posted by: Wil | Feb 26, 2008 2:53:10 AM

I love Ellen! But I stand by Obama 100%!!!!

Posted by: Juliet | Feb 26, 2008 3:03:13 AM

As I see it

Two very intelligent people now about to do something silly. McCain is going to win I can see that. Bring your troops home

ANYONE, absolutely ANYONE but obama 08

Posted by: jo | Feb 26, 2008 8:05:46 AM

Every great nation falls...just look at history. If obama gets that far then it WILL be the fall of this great nation. Look at who is backing him financially, look at who is supporting him. Farrakahn???? Why would such a radical support obama??? maybe because he sees that he can manipulate him to his advantage or he holds the same values and beliefs??? Wake up America you are being duped!!!!!

Posted by: wake up america | Feb 26, 2008 9:04:14 AM

Hillary is now attempting, as did Tina Fey on Saturday to use gender as the reason why she has bee challenged during the campaign. I KNOW it couldn't be that she has NOT managed her campaign well "w/35 years of experience", ( my God, if I hear that prhase once more...)OR had a consistent message, OR didn't use the RACE ( her husband and Bob Johnson's strong performances in South Carolina); OR DRUGS ( her Iowa surrogate's remarks); and of course Obama's odd-sounding Islamic type name and "questionable" ties to those "swarthy" Islamic- types ( remember the e-mails as well as the Clinton staffer in Iowa who was canned for the e-mails,etc)
It's so tough out there for a wealthy White woman to succeed as it compares with a black man with a "funny" sounding name." I mean Obama has lived such a charmed life with no hardship. Of course if she doesn't succeed it's everyone elses fault not her own!! I feel so sorry for Hillary; she's being so mistreated! Black people get all the breaks!! HILLARY STOP WHINING AND BE YOU; whoever that is this week!

Posted by: agbi | Feb 26, 2008 9:22:25 AM

Wake up America. As a citizen of this world, and America being a great super power, I can count on, I feel like the outcome of this election is affecting me personally. Why can't you, the people of America, see beyond the inspiring speeches? Anybody with a little talent can write inspiring speeches, but that does not qualify just anybody to be the next President. What if his speeches are meant to be inspiring but also deceiving? Maybe people are "delusional", just to use Obama's words. And he knows, with the help of others, how to create that delusion.
About being partriot I am not sure about that, after his wife's speech.

Posted by: Liz - Ontario, Canada | Feb 26, 2008 9:30:52 AM

Chip, you don't have to be a man to be a sexist. I have had some women tell me that they would never vote for a woman president. That would make them sexists. Experience is being around a seasoned politician, helping him or her run campaigns and passing legislation. How soon we forget that Hillary attempted to pass Universal Healthcare in the 90's. That's experience. As to your comment about knowing which fork to use at dinner, real classy. You're no sexist at all.

Posted by: Adrian | Feb 26, 2008 10:00:42 AM

Hillary will simply do the BEST JOB as PRESIDENT!

She is clearly the best choice; if you want the job done right, I mean, correct.

Posted by: Rock Water | Feb 26, 2008 10:10:15 AM

Rather than be a presenter at the Oscars Samuel L. Jackson spent his time in three East Texas towns campaigning for OBAMA.

Small towns that didn't get him national attention. He wasn't going for the glory, he was going for the votes.

I am so glad to see Ellen supporting Hillary. It's so good to see that at least some people that are "celebrities" are supporting her. From this article Ellen at least was able to make Hillary happy for a few minutes anyways considering she has had a miserable time this ENTIRE election with everyone hating on her. Frankly it makes me want to cry FOR HER reading how people feel about her and all the sexist comments and such people are saying about her(and women in general). Also I grew up in politics myself and know that politicians DON'T LIE ALL THE TIME and honestly believe Hillary doesn't lie ALL THE TIME, but does exaggerate the truth at times(which don't we all at one time or another?).

Before all you Obama people start saying things I am a junior in college and have an Associate's degree(as in YES I am educated). I just wanted to point that out b/c I am sure some of you will say I am not educated if I had not mentioned it here.

Posted by: courtjusperk | Feb 26, 2008 10:43:11 AM

Let's see: The Republican right wing has hated her for years; CNN, MSNBC, and FOX have continually given her negative coverage, while elevating their chosen one; some white men are afraid of a woman for president; but, she is the most intelligent, experienced, and capable candidate running. Ellen, I believe your observations are right on target! Thank you for cutting through all the negatives and showing such clarity--always with your compelling sense of humor!

Posted by: georgia | Feb 26, 2008 10:46:40 AM

Oh yea, I will NEVER vote for Obama. If Obama is the nominee I will DEFINITELY be voting within my party(REPUBLICAN), but if Hillary is the nominee I will be crossing party lines to vote for her. My mother and grandmother will be doing the same thing. By the way I live in NY and am really glad to have Hillary as my Senator.

Posted by: courtjusperk | Feb 26, 2008 10:47:29 AM

Kudos, Ellen! Thank you for being brave and standing up for Hillary. It is funny that the other candidate gets national media attention even when a nobody endorses him, but national heros like John Glenn, strong women like Ellen and Toni Morrison endorsements of Hillary get only online coverage or a blurb here or there. Go Hillary! Strong women everywhere are supporting the cause regardless of the unfair treatment by the media! HILLARY 2008!

Posted by: Heather McDonald | Feb 26, 2008 11:03:34 AM

I am glad one of the above bloggers pointed out that you don't have to be a man to be a sexist.

It is disgusting to see some of these female commentators on cable stations like MSNBC slam Hillary so they can continue to appear on shows like Chris Matthews.

This campaign cycle has been sexism from beginning to end and I am not at all surprised to see what is happening. And I believe Oprah is a traitor as well.

Posted by: Geo | Feb 26, 2008 11:33:24 AM

Why did the media yesterday ignore all teh high ranking military officiasl who endorsed Hillary?

But today a big deal about Chris Dodd endorsement of Obama?

The media doesn't want us to know the military supports a woman as commander in chief.

How obvious.

Posted by: Jee Wilson | Feb 26, 2008 11:57:18 AM

To Georgia, who thinks white men are afraid of a woman as president.....
If Condi Rice were running, do you think the "right wing" would hate her as well?? They would support her with open arms. They have hated Hillery because she was, well, Hillery--not the woman. And everything that the Obamamaniacs are throwing at her are finally being taken seriously by the Left, who for years thought everything negative about the Clintons was done as part of the 'Great Right-Wing Conspiracy". At least some Democrates are finally noticing that at some point they had to stop blaming Halliburton, Bush, Cheney, et al....
This run-up to the next election is going to be lots of fun for political junkies!!

Posted by: Tamarlain | Feb 26, 2008 12:26:31 PM

I am a Democrat and I turn 66 on my next birthday in April. Having carefully watched the tactics of Barack Obama in this campaign, and having realized that so many Rebublicans are turning out in droves to vote for him in the primaries, I can plainly see that Obama is encouraging the Republicans to over-ride the votes of Democrats.

I will write in Hillary's name or stay home on election day in November and I am encouraging every Democrat I know to do the same.

Obama is a disaster waiting to happen. I can't say I won't get satisfaction watching him go down. He's the most vain and pompous man to ever enter politics. Democrats everywhere should be outraged.

Posted by: Leonard Fischer | Feb 26, 2008 1:06:16 PM

Attention baby boomers we make up approx 73% of todays work force and should you support Mr Obama you might want to look deeply at his interest in the youth. The social security money that we have contributed will deminish rapidly with the unexperianced Obama as our president. We will all be eligatable for retirement in 2010.We really need to take a good look and get out and vote in this election, it will be very important. If Obama is elected we should vote for the senior of the candidates which would be McCain and I am not pro republican either but we do not need Obama. We just went through one nightmare. We do not need this to happen again.

Posted by: Charles | Feb 26, 2008 1:45:27 PM

Thanks Ellen! and Thanks for mentioning this on the blog!

First I was supporting John Edwards, because he laid out the detailed health care and tax cuts right away. Then, John quit the race just a few days before 2/5/08 Super Tuesday. I reviewed Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton's websties, issues, and experiences and chose Hillary.

Obama keeps voting "president" and not "yes" or "no" on controversial issues. It will not count on either way. He missed to vote 130 out of 420 votes. That is cheating!! He can agree on both sides later on.

Posted by: Lisaky | Feb 26, 2008 2:15:27 PM

Thanks, Ellen! We need to visibly get behind Hillary's run for the office. This being a celebrity focused nation they can be a huge positive voice for Hillary which has been missing until Ellen had the gutts to stand up. The negative media noise against Hillary has to counteracted by a lot of positive support to encourage others to feel accepted to also stand up for Hillary. GO HILLARY!! THANK YOU ELLEN!!

Thanks for the sparkles Ellen!

Go Hillary!

Mrs Clinton and Mr Obama both have what it takes to run this country better than Mr. Bush. If you vote for Mccain, who ofcourse is a fine Man, but will only continue with the same style of goverance as Mr Bush. So as Democrats, you guys need to come together as one nomatter who wins the nomination. We can not continue to run this country with same Bush agenda, that is why Mccain, though a good American but will not be a good candidate for the next president

Posted by: iky | Feb 26, 2008 11:38:40 PM

HILLARY CLINTON SHONE! SHE DESERVES THE PRESIDENCY!
Forget Experience. She's got WISDOM and A BALANCED PERSPECTIVE that will serve her well in foreign affairs. She had the guts challenge the Chinese in 1995 and tell them "Women's Rights are HUMAN RIGHTS".

"Precious"(as Lou Dobbs called him!) Obama's ANOREXIC RESUME will be torn to shreds by McCain if nominated.

In Canada, it's a sad joke that in the U.S. the primary cause of Bankruptcies are..MEDICAL BILLS. Since 1965, there's a National Health Care plan and access to some of the most specialized and best health services. This is a winning formula for Sen. Clinton.

The bias of American media toward Clinton was and is obvious. So,SHAME ON YOU AMERICAN MEDIA...WHERE WERE YOUR JOURNALISTIC INVESTIGATIVE SKILLS WHEN YOU PROMOTED THE IRAQ WAR AND KEPT PEOPLE IN THE DARK, REMAINING SILENT up to now on issues, You are repeating your costly negligent errors again...If Obamarama gets in, start preparing applications for IMMIGRATION TO CANADA!!! Good Luck...
