Fiesta or Siesta: Does Obama Know the Difference?
February 19, 2008 5:21 PM
ABC News' Sunlen Miller Reports: Barack Obama is not a Spanish speaker, but regularly throws out Spanish phrases out of the campaign trail.
"Si Se Puede" and "Mucho Gusto" are common phrases he feels comfortable saying.
But today in San Antonio, Texas, his limited Spanish might have gotten the best of him as a small difference in words had a huge difference in meaning.
A few people were leaving at the end of his town hall event while Obama was still speaking. Obama chalked that up, unknowingly, to them just wanting to beat traffic so he said goodbye in front of the 3,000 person crowd.
But then said, "We're having a little siesta out here - a little party," as a way to coax them to come back.
The problem?
Siesta, in Spanish, means nap. Fiesta, in Spanish, means party.
It was unclear what Obama actually meant, but it would be hard to surmise Obama wanted for people to catch a nap in the middle of his speech.
Senator Clinton also made Spanish language mistake recently on the campaign trail, mistakenly saying "Si Se Pueda" instead of "Si Se Puede" in Salinas, California in January.
While Obama gave the 2005 State of the Union Spanish Democratic response in Spanish, the campaign admits it was with much coaching.
Obama also has spoken in Spanish in a few of his campaign TV ads, intended to appeal to Hispanic voters in Nevada and California.
Today marks Obama's first visit to Texas in 2008 - his last event in the state was November 17th of last year. In the days leading up to Texas's March 4th primary, Obama will be courting the Hispanic vote aggressively – a voting block which he's been trying to slowly build support after Clinton garnered most of the Hispanic vote in Nevada and California.

Is there any JOURNALIST out there that believes in FAIRNESS and HONOR? The MEDIA has done such a hatchet job on HILLARY and has now put HUSSEIN OBAMA on the same level as a SAINT or (THE MESSIAH). I thought the MEDIA was supposed to be UNBIAS, some of them are a disgrace to their profession.

It's finally Dawning on people Obama is a Jr. Senator, with a big ego. despite his ability to sound important. Experience does count. Onl;y an experienced Democrat can win agaisnt McCain.
Obama your house of talk has fallen, thank God. Because if you are the Democratic nominee we can look at 4-8 more years of Republicans in the white house.
Hillary is the one to bring real change and hope. Obama is all hot air. Thank God the truth is coming out.

How shallow the comments on the election appear! The supporters of either Democratic candidate sound as if they are simply plagarizing or parroting each other or, in some cases, the candidates themselves. Is this the only rationale for the decison of the voter? I hope the substance of the voters' thought runs deeper than their mere words.

dream on guys, the Clintons are buried souls in US politics. I thought their daughter was smart enough not to be drawn in politics too, but..no! no! She's back. next thing she'll also be bragging about her experience as the daughter of the president. Wake up America, this is the land of opportunities to the hard-workers, not the few with a silver spoon in the hand.

The anti-Obama media faction sure is out in force today... leveling Clintonite sleaze and looking for the next "gotcha" moment.
I wonder why today... oh, yeah, there's an election in Wisconsin, where Hillary had a commanding lead only weeks ago. No wonder they opened the tap on their bucket of slime today!

What more can you expect from a guy who can't even deliver an original speech in English unless it is stolen from somewhere else.
Posted by: Someone | Feb 19, 2008 6:01:32 PM
It was a surprise that the light behind the scenrio was overlooked, and its source was never queried. This was the election of George Bush in 2000.
George Bush admitted that despite his Upper Class background he never would made it to Washington if the manuipulation, was not an orchestrated behind the scenes.
( george bush was the duncest president in US history. yet the educated annointed him)
Similarly Barack (Barry) Obama could not have risen without a light illuminating behind him . The question is, who was (is ) holding the lamp.
That knowledge is paramount , to tell us who he is going to serve.
This America is very class defined, and unrepentantly so.
Ronald Reagan came to prominence when a vacuum was created by President Jimmy Carter, who failed to creativily handle the Iran seizure of the American Embassy and its occupants. The experiment of a glib prattler, like Ronald Reagan, in the service of the upper class meant that at the end, American economically fell on the verge of bankruptcy. Together with Margaret Thatcher , the English Prime Minister, they almost bankrupt capitalism. That is until the english people had to run her out of office.
So the question always centers around , who is Barack going to serve?
It is my estimation that he will disappoint us, as we, HOPE, he will be more 50/50 in his service to the Upper and Lower classes.
That of course depends how who is holding the lamp behind him. Our grandparents were smart enough to teach us , to test the workings of people we want to lead us .. They said check...who are their friends and what are their position on real issues. Not the eloquent speeches he puts they front of everyone.

Boy, these linguistically-challenged, racist anti-Obama rants really tell you about the demographic group who's reading ABC news...
...it's the same uninformed dupes still voting for 4 more years of Clintonian triangulation and compromise.
Look, she lost me when George Bush "tricked" her into sending 500 Billion to Iraq. 4000 dead. 60,000 maimed. 120,000 dead civilians. And I'm supposed to care if Obama accidentally said "siesta"? PATHETIC JOURNALISM!
Posted by: MG | Feb 19, 2008 6:06:45 PM
Amen, MG.
We're spending billions in Iraq per week, Osama bin Hidin' remains on the loose, the mortgage meltdown is still in its early stages, the global temperature keeps rising, the administration is wiping its...feet...with our beloved Constitution and Bill of Rights, millions around the world are sick, malnourished and/or enslaved, and all the while Sunlen Miller wants to talk about Obama's Spanish, and Jake Tapper is obsessed with Obama's long-well-known penchant for sharing the occasional phrase with his dear friend Deval Patrick.
Say WHAT?
Posted by: Mark | Feb 19, 2008 6:14:48 PM
ABC News:
Am I supposed to care whether Obama said siesta or fiesta? What a joke! Honestly, who doesn't make an occasional verbal slip, especially in another language!
Here's my news. She lost my vote when George Bush "tricked" her into sending 500 Billion to Iraq. She fully supported this failed DISASTER. 4000 dead. 60,000 maimed. 120,000 dead civilians. And I'm supposed to care if Obama accidentally said "siesta"?
YEAH, RIGHT!
Posted by: MG | Feb 19, 2008 6:15:04 PM
Is this what they call news these days?
Someone accidentally says the wrong word?
Hold on, I'll call 911 to report the siesta-fest over here.
Here's a news idea for ABC. What about a story on the wrong english words when Hilery said "yes" to Bush's war for oil.

I am guessing you found Obama- you should also find out who is donating to Obama-and Hillary. especially considering your passion to end the war.

If George Bush (or McCain or a Clinton) would make the same mistake the ObamaDems would be laughing and making fun of it while it would be blooper of the week on the Daily Show and Saturday Night Live run over and over and over again.
Obama does it (plus copy others ideas without attribution) and we get "Gee, isn´t that cute?".
Sorry, but Obama has not gotten the scrutiny that all the others have.
Posted by: Wilson James | Feb 19, 2008 6:27:34 PM
Interesting how the only negative things people can think of about Mr. Obama are trivial. Republicans are maybe more successful in electing presidents because they are not such purists about their candidates, e.g.,
Bush 43 arrested 3 times, Nixon a Duke University student cheater, etc.
Posted by: applecrispbetty | Feb 19, 2008 6:29:02 PM
When the media was doing it to Hillary and Bill you all loved it, now that Obama is on the receiving end its the problem. At least the media is being balanced they are digging at both sides. Honestly its about time they get at Obama and let the public decide who they want as President then in that respect none of you can blame the media for trying to pick our candidate for us.
Posted by: SJ | Feb 19, 2008 7:07:06 PM
Why don't you report some real news?
Posted by: Jack | Feb 19, 2008 7:09:58 PM
You miss the entire point, Obama does not know anything about the hispanic culture or words, he is playing like he knows them and understands their concerns by pretending he knows spanish, but he does not just like he does not yet understand our needs. We are in crises mode right now, we need a president who can handle problems and not mind taking a lot of heat. After Hillary cleans up the bush mess, then it will be time for Obama who can look at "hope" and bigger ideals but right now we need someone who can understand the problems and get them cleaned that is why we need Hillary Rodham Clinton

I support Hillary Clinton. I don't think Barack Obama is bad (in spite of the copying Patrick's rhetoric), he just has less experience. Those of you that want to try to tarnish Obama, implying somehow that he is a Muslim (which I don't think is a bad thing either) by using his middle name are not doing a favor for Hillary Clinton, nor a favor for the Democratic Party. Let's fight this contest based on the issues.
I suspect those that are trying to stir this particular fight are from Rush Limburger cheese faction of the Republican party.
Posted by: WestCoastMessenger | Feb 19, 2008 7:40:54 PM
The press has been so easy on Obama. But you're right, this story is a pathetic attempt to look like they're trying to be tough on Obama.
Wait for the real tough stories, like, "Can Obama Lead?" "But Can Obama Win the General Election?"
Our illustrious media will start asking all of these "probing" questions, and play right into the campaign of fear that will make these stories seem like school fire drills, should he become the Democratic nominee.
Posted by: OhioNative | Feb 19, 2008 7:44:17 PM
You people are so sad... OF COURSE they're picking on his slip-ups. The only thing ANYONE can critique are Obama's experience and background. Hmmmm, now let's see, where oh where did all that experience go?!? Oh, right, didn't have any. Okay, next, where, oh where, in his background are there missteps?!? Wow, married father of 2 w/out any actual skeletons. Well, good God, call out the MEDIA and get him to run for President!! Just kidding... Hmmm, okay, then, what mistakes has Obama made in the last 24 hours? And here you are.
I think it's sad that you Obama fans are "voting" for the guy with NO experience, well hidden skeletons (if any) who makes you FEEL "warm and fuzzy" inside.
Who knew? MY dad could have run for president, if that's all you sheeple are looking for!
Destroy America? Yes, you CAN... elect this NOBODY with communist and socialist leanings AND mentors.
Don't come crying to the rest of us when all your mommy and daddy's money is gone, and you wonder "Why, oh why, do I have to stand in line at the gas station!"
Morons.

What, may I ask, is wrong with taking the effort to learn about a foreign language or culture, even if only a little bit? I'm not Hispanic, but through years of effort, I'm proud to say I'm now fluent in Spanish. I know firsthand how difficult it is, and I commend Senator Obama for at least trying.
Posted by: Logan | Feb 19, 2008 8:35:38 PM
Oh Andy, Andy, my friend...I expected so much better from you than the usual Clintoneer non-answer dodge!
Anyone else ready to take a stab at telling us all precisely what "experience" and "accomplishments" Senator Clinton has to offer us over Senator Obama?
Anyone?
Posted by: Mark | Feb 19, 2008 8:38:04 PM
Obama doesn't care about Hispanics!!! They were probably leaving because they know he is "full of empty promises." My assessment and check this out is he has a Narcissistic Personality Disorder...google it, and take a look at the criteria for NPD.
Posted by: Maria | Feb 19, 2008 8:40:22 PM
I rest my case, America.
NOT ONE Clintoneer can or will accept my challenge to lay out for us precisely how Senator Clinton's much-vaunted "experience" and "accomplishments" are in any way superior to or more numerous than those of Senator Obama.
Please remember this when you vote....
Posted by: Mark | Feb 19, 2008 8:51:27 PM
Obama's biggest fault is that he isn't scripted and poll tested.
And it drives Bill and Hillary nuts.
The guy accidentally says siesta instead of fiesta... and it's national news? Yikes!
Posted by: Kansas Jack | Feb 19, 2008 9:00:44 PM
Oh Mark, are you there?
Do you think this is a history session? If you want to examine Hillary's career , go to the relevant website. Maybe senate .Gov, might help.
However I think you are straying from the instructions on page 8 of the Karl Rove's manual, for haters against the most feared candidate ever, Hillary Clinton. Please read it again, or I can fax you a copy. heh..heh...
Posted by: Andy | Feb 19, 2008 9:08:17 PM
Isn't it "out ON the trail" and not "out of the trail"? If you're going to criticize anyone else's use of language or linguistic gaffes, at least start with getting your own grammar right!
Posted by: Carlota | Feb 19, 2008 9:12:50 PM
Yo MG..
What page of the manual , by Karl is a supporter of Hillary, expected to be describe as Zombie. The last time you had anything good to say about a candidate , was when George Bush opposing Al Gore. what a bad choice you made... Are you going to take responsibility for the mess we are in.
You have the history of a Zombie. supporting evil.isn't that correct?
Posted by: Andy | Feb 19, 2008 9:29:45 PM
I can't stand it when they compare Obaman to JFK. Which Obama does not discourage. JFK was an American hero and patriot who served his country in time of war. Obama is not and his wife was never proud of America in her adult life (to quote her), until she came close to being the first lady. What a joke!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Posted by: Joe | Feb 19, 2008 10:17:41 PM
A lot of posters seem upset that the media are giving Obama a hard time for misspeaking, though they were undoubtedly the same people who roared with laughter whenever Bush said something stupid or out of place.
I'm sure you can all remember chuckling to yourselves over the past 8 years of misstatements and flubbed lines from the current President. Hipocricy, dear friends, is an ugly dress to wear.
Posted by: Steve | Feb 19, 2008 10:32:23 PM
Please... Hillary's "experience" advantage is largely from Bill's Presidency.
We already decided in this primary that experience is not the most important qualification. If it was, Richardson, Biden or Dodd would be our candidate.
Hillary is not a consensus builder. She was not able to get health care through the first time. Clinton administration sat by and watched our dependency on foreign oil increase. Saddam Hussein continued to murder his people.
What experience of Hillary's do we want?
Posted by: Dean | Feb 19, 2008 10:38:34 PM
It is all about change, and the change the American people are calling for is for a less competent POTUS who will give amnesty to any ILLEGAL Alien within our shores and throw our failing economy into the next great depression. Hurras for change!
Never forget. America gets the president they deserve.
Posted by: DannoJyD | Feb 19, 2008 11:58:28 PM
As a Latino, I find this reporting extremely pathetic. Whether Obama can distinguish between "siesta" and "fiesta" will not end the war, repair our economy, or even offer Americans healthcare. Maybe it's time we don't let the interns do the reporting!
Posted by: Gil | Feb 20, 2008 12:18:56 AM
Who cares? Is someone going to make a hobby out of cataloging Senator Obama's verbal mistakes the way they have President Bush's? Although President Bush has set the world's record for saying really dumb things, he is not stupid and neither is Senator Obama. We should just laugh and move on. If you can't, you are the one with the problem.
Posted by: Mad Jayhawk | Feb 20, 2008 11:50:59 AM
Forget about anyone listing Senator Obama's or Senator Clinton's experience. Their supporters ignore the question or even the request for more information. There is a reason for this if you haven't figured it out by now. These two candidates do not have any meaningful experiences that do not include the words 'elected to', 'voted for', 'cosponsored', 'fought for', 'led the fight for', 'proposed', 'served on a committee to .....', 'opposed', etc. One of the funniest things I have seen on TV for a while was a Senator Obama supporter desperately trying to answer a question about what experience Senator Obama has had that qualifies him to be president. When a softball question like that can't be hit out of the park or at least off the wall, it is going to be a long, brutal season.
Posted by: Mad Jayhawk | Feb 20, 2008 12:04:29 PM
This is news? Worse than that, some of you think you can get mileage for your chosen candidate out of it? The only thing it proves is Obama cannot speak fluent spanish. Can any of the others? Have you ever heard President Bush try to say Buenos Dias? As a Latino, I can say quite emphatically, spanish-speaking is not what I look for in a president.
Posted by: Nicole | Feb 20, 2008 2:56:43 PM
One thing no one mentions is the clash between both candidates' claims to be for "change" that will unite the country and their actual policy/ideological positions that guarantee them to be even MORE polarizing than Bush was.
After all, Bush's first big domestic initiative was to let Teddy Kennedy write his education reform bill. Naturally this was a huge bi-partisan effort and so he has never been given credit for it.
The second major push from Bush was to offer TWICE as much aid to New York following 9/11 than Hillary asked for. But did the President get credit for being generous? No, he got slammed for being "a divider" because the Democrats needed to jin up rage and hate to win in 2002 and 2004.
On the huge medicine for seniors bill and amnesty Bush as reached across the aisle to Democrats (angering his base) while both Hillary and Obama have NEVER reciprocated with bi-partisan efforts or initiatives of their own showing that they're capable of at least trying to "get along". No, for them, they demand total surrender from "the other side" as condition for 'getting along' and if the GOP doesn't comply, to blame the GOP for being 'divisive'.
In psychological terms it's called "projection" and the Democrats tend to excell in accusing others of the very things they are most guilty of being: sexist and racist (looking at people in groups divided by race or gender not ideological blocs like conservatives do) and fascist (demanding top-down, bureaucratic solutions from the Federal government taking over the private sector to 'get things done').
Finally, while Bush personally has been called every nasty name in the book and had books, movies and series promoting his assassination, all with ZERO negative consequences to those doing the hate-mongering, Clinton routinely has silenced MSM networks, anchors, journalists when they've been critical of her. In other words... Republicans don't "censor" anyone while Democrats routinely silence people or destroy their careers in pay back for criticism.

As a Latino I find this a bit silly. Is there really nothing else to critcize Obama with apart from trivia?
Posted by: Maria Sanchez | Feb 20, 2008 3:36:09 PM
YES, HE IS A JR.SENATOR. We need to step back, and calm down. His ego shows in his posturing. A true narcissist.

As an "old hen", child of the 60's, I reflect on to the fact, that my generation, started out "shaking up the establishment", then damned if most of us didn't join it! It's the youth with new visions & oldsters with fresh ideas that will turn this country around. Research your candidate. Don't rely on MSNBC,CNN,& FOX with their own particular spins to influence you. Think for yourself. Be part of the solution & please....vote! You are the future.
Posted by: Maxine II | Feb 20, 2008 6:55:21 PM
Experience counts a lot. In every walks of life, When you are applying for a job, they will look for your experiences. I don't know why this is not much required or people ignored it when someone is seeking for the head of the state. The past is as important as the future. Your credentials play important role for your future. Americans are now forgetting that hardworks are what made America today. Most young generations doesn't see those anymore. Everyone feel that they can be the next American Idol, a next celebrity or a sport superstar. That's the reason why they are so fired up with Obama. Obama out of nowhere all of a sudden become superstar. That becomes an inspiration for young generation today that believes that they don't need to work hard. If you are lucky you can be a President of the United States. It is almost parallel to what Michael Jordan said "Most of the NBA players are being paid for their potential not for all the skills and talents that they had" and look at the result they barely wins a medal in Olympic and other international competition. They even lost here in their own land in several occasions. If we forget the past and just look on the future, can we forget our constitution, the one who made and implement it. If we do, then be ready for the biggest change, the downfall of America. Think well before you vote for Obama.

A few years ago in Germany I asked a gentleman if I could "pet" his dog.
He looked confused - I had actually asked if I could "paint" it.
Learning a second or third language in your adult life is difficult, especially for Americans who aren't used to it. Our current president seems to experience great difficulty mastering his first.
This minor snafu is not news - might I remind you there happens to be a war on?
