George H.W. Bush to Endorse McCain
February 15, 2008 10:47 AM
ABC News' Teddy Davis Reports: Former President George H.W. Bush will endorse Sen. John McCain for president on Monday in Houston, Texas, sources tell ABC News.
The endorsement from the former president is expected to increase pressure on former Ark. Gov. Mike Huckabee to end his bid for the GOP nomination.
While McCain is comfortably ahead of Huckabee in the race for delegates, Huckabee's presence in the race and ability to score a large chunk of the vote among social conservatives has weakened McCain's standing by fueling stories about conservative dissatisfaction with the senator who has bucked party orthodoxy in the past on issues like immigration, President Bush's tax cuts, and campaign finance regulation.
The endorsement from the former president follows one from former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, the former president's son and brother of the current president.
President George W. Bush, who competed with McCain for the GOP nomination in 2000, has not endorsed McCain but he has expressed gratitude to his one-time rival for his resolute support for the Iraq war.
ABC News' Ron Claiborne contributed to this report.

An endorsement from the former President who begat the Toxic Texan = Supper with the Borgia's - RSVP bring your own coffin.
This must be good news for the Democratic campaign.

Who else was he going to endorse?
Posted by: TimTom | Feb 15, 2008 11:16:55 AM
The only ones questioning McCain`s conservative credentials are the Neocon parasites like Rush, Coulter and Romney who are only interested in keeping their death grip on the throat of the legitimate Repub Party.
Posted by: luke | Feb 15, 2008 11:20:27 AM
Given the popularity of the Bush name is this necessarily a good thing?
Posted by: genlin | Feb 15, 2008 11:27:23 AM
Of course he waited until there was a projected winner. He would've looked stupid if he endorsed a loser when the race was just beginning. Just goes to show, the Reps had no real candidates from the start. GO OBAMA!
Posted by: jon sid | Feb 15, 2008 11:33:52 AM
Yep, that should definately help McCain. Especially with Bush's ringing endorsement of Clemen's innocence.
Posted by: Captain Kangaroo | Feb 15, 2008 11:34:38 AM
It had to be done; But McCain has abandoned all of his principle to become W. so it's not a surprise. He has won the contest to be the next extremist from the Republican party. And is certain to lose in November, to either his Senate colleague from NY, or ILL. Obama campaigns on what we can do, McCain campaigns on what we can't. Clinton plays liberals lip service, while she hawks on foriegn policy. Either of them have more executive experience, or confidence in the American people than McCain. Admittedly all John knows is war. Economy, health care. Education, his answer is sacrifice of freedom in name of security. Without freedom, you have NO security. Perpetual war, is NOT a plan for safety. Not to mention it will bankrupt our country, and our economy will be far more worse off than even now. The Republicans have sealed their fate. And they have lost the country. Why anyone, would want to run for carrying out a third BUSH term is dumbfounding... Or just plain DUMB! (FYI: Yes, I am a registered Republican) No matter what the Democrats do they can't lose this one. (And even if they tried the media wouldn't let them)

I WOULDN'T TAKE A BILLION DOLLARS FROM THE BUSH FAMILY EVEN FOR FREE. THOSE LOT ARE JUST WHAT WE NEVER WANT TO BE ASSOCIATED WITH EVER. BYE BYE BUSH. BYE BYE MCCAIN. NO MORE.

This has to be the most shocking news of the day! At least McCain knows he has the full support of the house of Saud.

In my opinion, the Republicans need to set this election Out! They know theres not a chance in the world, a Republican will be President this next Election.

I have seen the photo of the Houston, Texas Obama’s Campaign Office in which a Cuban flag with an embossed photo of Che Guevara on it is displayed.
I have called the office to demand an explanation for this display of anti-American and communist showing with no proper answer.
I have heard Mr. Obama’s response to it, but it was not satisfactory. Does he or doesn’t he? If his statements are true, then he is connected with all his people, or doesn’t he?
After considerable analysis of the issues, I had come to the conclusion that Mr. Obama is a dangerous candidate for the presidency of this wonderful country. His speeches are just beautiful empty platitudes aimed to the poor masses that unfortunately, are not very well educated. But more disturbing yet is the fact that the media is playing along the game with him and they are supposed to know better! How sad!
Mr. Obama’s speeches have a scaring similarity to the many ones that I have heard from the mouth whose picture is proudly displayed in the senator’s campaign office in Houston, Texas, as well as of Fidel Castro himself. These speeches sound exactly like a communist propaganda, and I believe they are.
As a response, I would say to Mr. Obama:
YES WE CAN! Hope that people see you for what you really are, not good for the presidency.
YES WE CAN! Dream and realize the American dream by been honest good producers that work hard and intelligently, not asking what the government is going to give us when we make bad decisions or mistakes.
By backing our president when he tries to defend us of the many enemies here and abroad that envy us and showing that we stand together behind him we will obtain the respect that other countries should feel for us.
I want explanation to the several dangerous Muslim ties of Mr. Obama’s here and abroad beginning with his own church connections.
No, I don’ like wars either, but when religious fanatics want to destroy us, I like a leader that takes steps to defend us and we should all stand behind him until we are victorious.
We should fight for what is right to defend ourselves until victory is attained and NEVER SURRENDER. And that means ALL OF US.
In WWII every person helped with the war effort, women, children, and older people. If we do the same now we can win this awful war much sooner and earn the respect of other countries.
In contrast, compare the transparency of Mr. McCain. He will tell you the truth even if you happen not to like it, and I am convinced that this conflict will not last as long when our enemies see our determination to stand together behind our leader until victory is reached.
WE SHOULD NEVER SURRENDER!!!

I find it difficult to believe that any republican candidate, especially John McCain who's basically the sequel to Bush Jr, will succeed in changing or correcting anything that is wrong with this country, when they have already had seven years to do so, but instead have merely perpetuated and inflamed even more problems at home and abroad with their incompetence and corrupt policies. Give me a break, people. Your same old spins on terrorism and how you will protect the country are falling on deaf (and hopefully smarter) ears this time around.
Posted by: Charity | Feb 15, 2008 12:28:49 PM
Vote for the republican party, and you loose your freedoms. Vote for the democats and you loose your life at the hands of terrorists. I'll take my chances with the democrats. Vote OBAMA! I don't sleep well anyway.

Posted by: Paralegallyblonde | Feb 15, 2008 12:46:44 PM
The way things are shaping up, it looks like the only way for McCain to lose this thing is with the endorsement of Rush, Coulter and their fellow Neocons.
Posted by: luke | Feb 15, 2008 12:55:22 PM
As much damage as "The Shrub" and old man Bush have done to our country, an endorsement from either BUSH is the kiss of death. I am figuring out they only represent their bought and paid for party anyhow - The GOP (Group of Pricks)I would vote for anyone but Juan McAmnesty!

I still believe in miracles, and I believe Gov. Huckabee is the next President of the USA.....
He is the only true conservative, and if Christians pray before voting, they will have to vote for Mike Huckabee..
He is the only candidate that wants to pass a bill to reverse Roe vs Wade..... And end the horrible murders of innocent babies every day..
He is the only candidate that believes marraige should be between one man ,& one woman.. McCain voted against the Defense of Marraige Amendment..
He is the only candidate that studies the Bible and lives by it.. He is the only candidate with qualifications to lead our country...
Christians, do you really think God would have you vote liberal... McCain has said that he had nothing against gay marraiges, if they had a ceremony.

VOTE YOUR CHOICE
IT WON"T HURT MCCAIN NOW SO
Posted by: Darla | Feb 15, 2008 1:02:53 PM
The more I see Mike Huckabee's relentless determination to give voting Americans a choice the more impressed I am with the man.
I like to see an under dog try as hard as he can to make a seemingly impossible come from behind win, even if he looses, the effort is inspiring.
One would think a Vietnam vet would appreciate Americans excersizing their freedom of choice in picking their nations potential leader.
Go for it, this is what this country is really all about.

McCain will surely lose against Obama in November and here are the reasons.
1) He got endorsed by a Bush
2) He is 72
3) He puts people asleep
4) He's been inside Washington 4ever
5) He has old ideas
6) He says we'll be in Iraq for 100 yrs.
7) He can't compete with Obama's speech.
8) He can't win over the South
9) McCain is seeking Bush's 3rd term.
10) He's not charismatic like Huckabee
Posted by: anne | Feb 15, 2008 1:41:39 PM
john Mcain will in novemebr by a least (amybe more) a 2-1 margin. dont insult the intelligence of the american voters. democrats are running to obama to ditch hillary, then they will vote for Mcain in huge numbers.
Posted by: Lynn | Feb 15, 2008 1:54:15 PM
Wonder how much campaign money is coming from the Carlyle Group??? If McCain wins, be very afraid!! 4 more years of Bush politics. I also am curious abotu how McCain feels about teh North American Union?.. Is he aware that most people in America and Canada are against it?.. Does he care?..
Posted by: DJ | Feb 15, 2008 2:15:00 PM
Bush Sr. is far different than his son. Bush Sr. is a much more moderate man who had no scandals while in office.
* *
I am discouraged by so many people hurling petty insults based on internet information rather than reality. Instead of insulting candidates, we should be thankful for an election between McCain and Obama. They offer clear choices, articulated policies, and both are generally committed (to this point) to working with members of the opposition party for the betterment of America.
As Americans we finally have an election between candidates who do not preach hatred at one another. So why sit here in a forum and do that? We should move past the politics of the past two administrations. Either with McCain -OR- Obama, America will be in better shape in 2009 than it has been for the past sixteen years.
Posted by: Jim | Feb 15, 2008 2:19:06 PM
It looks like the Republican establishment realizes that Mike Huckabee really does have a chance at winning, so they're doing everything they can, using the media, to make people think John McCain has already one.

George DUBYA said "McCain is a true conservative" His daddy endorsed the guy. But, if you were planning on voting for McCain, don't let them keep you away from the polls.
Posted by: eric | Feb 15, 2008 3:18:18 PM
I voted for Huckabee because of his sincere moral grounding. I felt that he would be able to bring a lot of good discussion to the table either with Clinton or Obama even if he didn't win the general election. He came across in the debates better than any of the other candidates. Unfortunately, he didn't have the financial and political clout. Plus too many people are afraid of his unashamed faith.
I believe on General Election day there will be not one red state in the union if it's McCain vs. Obama.
Posted by: BM | Feb 15, 2008 3:25:54 PM
Too many people have been duped by the Bushes, not me! Junior is worse then his daddy for sure. Hang your heads Bush supporters, the damage you've enabled is enormous! I know you'll vote for MCain, you'd vote for Hitler if he was running on the GOP ticket! Such lemmings!Sooo scared! Decades more of wars with McCain, with the economy in shambles,if McCain wins.

C'mon, John. More people voted against W the first time... it was the Supreme Court's failure to remain impartial that put him in the White House. He DID win in '04, due to the Dems poor choice for a nominee... and the Swift Boat distortions.
So... George the First endorses McCain AFTER the nomination is all but assured. I'm shocked. I was sure he would have led the Draft Mikey B. campaign.

Everyone is saying that Bill Clinton represents the OLD Politics. Aren’t Bill and Kennedy both OLD School Politics? I don’t have a problem with Hillary or Obama. However, some people are hoping for a Republican ticket with McCain and Colin Powell. This combination could be lethal for Obama. I have already heard some Blacks say, “Even though I am Dem, I just might Vote for Colin Powell.” I like Colin Powell, too. With him on a Republican ticket, November 2008 is going to be a very tough choice. If he were running on a Democratic ticket, He already has my VOTE. This mean that Obama needs to 'Proceed With Caution' when choosing a running mate. Some people are saying that an ideal running mate for Obama is the Governor from Kansas, Kathleen Sebelius. Remember, most people VOTE for familiarity. I do not know her. When taking in to consideration the fact that most people don’t REALLY know Obama, if he wins the Democratic nomination, a running mate that is well known might be the best choice.

Wow. Two words. Who cares? George and Barbara Bush should be considered enemies of the state for parenting a monster like W. (and crazy Jeb too). They sure gave them some great values, didn't they? The Bushes are disgusting and should all be in jail.
Posted by: Robert | Feb 15, 2008 5:14:35 PM
Colin Powell, are you kidding? He has no integrity left after his involvement in the big WMD lie. He shot his legacy in the foot. Before that he was seen as an American hero. After that he was one of Baby W's puppets.

I have the same feeling as the Patroit. Obama's message is too familiar. I have heard of that before. He reminds me of some so called inspiring communist leaders. He is too good to be real. Americans are dreamers and freedom lovers. But some of you do not understand what really freedom is because you are born to have it.
Posted by: American Dream | Feb 15, 2008 6:05:21 PM
I agree with Gloria.
I live in China and Obama is running a communist campaign. No doubt about that. For those that say that I lie, get on a plane and come and see communism in the face.

I wish someone would ask McCain to debate Mike Huckabee one on one. Mike Huckabee would cream him, then win every primary from here to the convention, and the Party could choose a real contender.

As a citizen of the UK I'm really hoping you guys vote for a Republican again cos the £nglish pound has never had it so good over the ever weakening dollar.
Its sure to grow even stronger with another Republican!
But seriously, putting aside financial gains for a moment, America needs an extensive face lift, and Mr.Obama is a rather dashing fellow if i might say so.
Nonetheless, Vote McCain!... so i can buy an American yacht ;o)

This election isn't about Dems or Pubs it's about the independents just like the last 2. They are a small minority in this country and they hold all the power. It's too bad the rest of us are too blindly stuck on one side of the fence.

It is wonderful news that the conservative leaders of the GOP are lining up in support of Senator McCain. If Republicans coalesce for the November election,John McCain has an excellent chance of becoming the next President. He is a real conservative who can win the votes of Independents and pro-life Democrats in the general election. If elected President,John McCain will vigorously prosecute the war against Islamic terrorism. He realizes the first responsibiliy of our President is to defend the nation.Senator McCain will also support the right to life if elected to the White House. He will nominate justices to the Supreme Couurt in the mold of Chief Justice Roberts,Justice Alito,Justice Thomas and Justice Scalia. If one believes in the culture of life,John McCain is a good man to endorse.I will vote for this good man in November.

Mr. McCain has turned his attention to attacks on his Democratic opponents, saying they (quote) “promise a new approach to governing but offer only the policies of a political orthodoxy that insists the solution to government’s failures is to simply make it bigger.”(unquote).
Amazing piece of backwards blame-shifting:
Failures? Big Government? Who has the all time record in both categories? Can you say 'George W. Bush and the Republican Party?'
And McCain's pointing at Democrats when his own party is the kings of failure and has produced the biggest growth in American government in U.S. history......As usual, the Republicans don't know how
hollow and ridiculous their accusations sound in light of their own dismal record.
