Harry and Louise Part Deux?

Share

February 01, 2008 1:43 PM

ABC News' Kate Snow and David Wright Report: Remember Harry and Louise?  Hillary Clinton's campaign sure does.

And they are none too happy about a glossy mailer that's being sent to voters in at least two states by the Obama campaign.

The new mailer features a middle-aged white couple sitting at their dining room table with the words: "Hillary's health care plan forces everyone to buy insurance, even if you can't afford it.  Is that the best we can do for families struggling with high health care costs?"

"I am personally outraged by this picture,” said Len Nichols, Director of the Health Policy Program at the New America Foundation.  Nichols was described as unaffiliated with any presidential candidate but joined a conference call for reporters to rail against the new mailer.

"This ad goes so far over the line I felt compelled to raise my voice," Nichols said.  "It's just untrue to claim Senator Clinton’s plan is not addressing affordability."

Nichols called the flier "totally evocative of Harry and Louise" and "ridiculously inflammatory".

And at one point on the call Nichols went much further-- comparing the Obama mailer to the attempt by members of the Nazi party to march on Skokie, Illinois in the late 1970s.

"It is outrageous as having Nazis march through Skokie, Illinois, or some other things we could think of probably if I had more time and my heart was beating less quickly."

Later on the call, Clinton's Communications Director Howard Wolfson tried to make clear that Nichols was not speaking on behalf of the Clinton campaign.

"That is not a comparison we would make," Wolfson said.

The Obama campaign planned its own conference call later on Friday to respond to the charges and explain the use of the mailer.

"There are honest policy differences in this debate," said Obama spokesperson Bill Burton, defending the mailer.  "That's what a mandate is.  Everybody is forced to buy health care."

Burton said the comparison to the Harry and Louise ad campaign of the mid-90s was "reading a little too much into the tea leaves."

Burton also said Len Nichols had worked with the Clinton campaign on health care issues in the past.

He found the comparison to Nazi efforts outrageous.

The Clinton camp insists the flier is an unfair portrayal of her plan.

Indeed, Senator Clinton's health care plan does include provisions meant to lower the cost of health insurance for all and specific provisions meant to make insurance more affordable for lower income Americans.

"A central element of our plan is that every American can afford it," said Neera Tanden, Policy Director for the Clinton Campaign.  "We do more than Senator Obama on cost, on reducing costs," she said.

Dr. Irwin Redlener, Professor of Public Health and Pediatrics at Columbia University and an adviser to the Clinton Campaign said the mailing from the Obama campaign was tantamount to a Republican attack.

"This is clearly a battle that we knew would come up when the Democratic candidate would face the Republican candidate," he said.  "To have one of the two remaining Democratic candidates pull out the Republican playbook for November at this point in the calendar is not just disingenuous and wrong for the campaign dynamics here...but potentially could be damaging to the cause of getting this health care crisis solved someday."

Now who is playing dirty?

Posted by: A reader in GA | Feb 1, 2008 2:29:53 PM

Come on guys.. He is simply trying to show a policy differnce. Not a prsonal attack

Could you post the mailer? It's difficult to evaluate without actually seeing it

There is no doubt that the Clinton plan is a government mandate. While it does reduce costs, it does not eliminate them. Thus, what happens if the person still cannot afford it? What is the penalty? I don't think I've ever heard Hillary say what happens if the mandate is not followed. If someone has an answer to this question, please post it.

This's exactly why i don't like Obama.

He wants everybody to believe that he's this innocent victim (with the media's help i might add) when in fact behind the scenes, his camp has been attacking the Clintons as much as they've been attacking him.
The Clinton's aren't perfect, but he is no saint either.

I seeing only comments you are making about Obama. It seem that you are taking this to personal. If you can't be objective don't comment at all. I'm tired of the news putting thier personal spin on things. All I have read are thing negative to the Obama campign. Please Hilary has slung as much mudd.

yeah, there are a lot of Obama stories but they are fluff, easy pieces, I think designed to try and prove they are even handed, while really trashing Clinton on her stories.

I have been watching cable news and reading blogs now for over8 hours today and can't find ONE SINGLE professional commentary or official news story with a postive angle for Clinton. Not one.

Now I know that the Obamathon is popular, and that it is exciting, but Clinton did not do poorly in that debate at all. Matter of fact, much to the chagrin of CNN, their live palm polling devices showed the audience was leaning 60-40 Clinton. Well they quicly went to a commercial and never brought that faux pas up again. Oops.

They never mentioned the full 45 second burst of applause about a Clinton needed to be there to clean up a Bush mess. Wolf Blitzkreig desperately wanted to speak over it and twice he had to pause, to go to a commercial break.

Obama gets Edward's old endorsement of 650,000 and it's all channels all day news.

Clinton gets the Farmers Workers backing and the national Nursing Union, with a total for both of 13 MILLION people and it has yet to make it on the air, on any cable news, or even local, not on this blog, nor on MSNBC or ABCNEWS.

His 650K is News, you see.
Her 13 MILLION is not news, you see.

Oh please. Hillary the victim. Her new strategy is to react negatively against anything Obama does. If he fails to act, he is weak. If he acts, he is a bully. Poor, pitiful Hillary. This is an election and Obama needs to clearly show that it matters who one votes for. Hillary - go away. Enough!!!!

How is that a personal attack on Clinton? It's simply the truth. In fact, the minute I heard Clinton's universal health care plan, the first question raised in my head was what would happen to the people who couldn't afford it? To penalize folks who are already so low on their finances EVEN FURTHER seems ridiculous to me. Until Clinton can state exactly what these penalties will be and how this universal health care plan will be affordable to EVERYONE, including the homeless people on the streets, Obama has every right to point out the flaws of that plan in the mailer.

Posted by: Cat Scratch | Feb 1, 2008 4:09:51 PM

there is a huge difference between pointing out differences in policy, position and voting record and an attack. This mailer points out a difference. Her plan does make not having insurance against the law. Affordability is addressed, but not in great detail.

comparing it to Nazi's marching on Skokie, is an attack. It has nothing to do with any policy or position, it is a direct comparison to vilify one person over the other on a personal level.

Hillary's people were right to distance themselves from it immediately, however, they did have the guy on the call and he has worked for Clinton before, so I don't call them completely innocent.

Obama will do anything to get elected!

Nazis?

Methinks the Clinton camp protests too much, particularly after the egregiously false abortion and social security cap mailers from their side. At least Obama's sticks to the truth about her position.

Posted by: Kevin | Feb 1, 2008 5:50:15 PM

Of course, to be fair, we would have to compare this to Obama's plan. He is not mandating everyone buy in. In the debate last night, he was asked - "okay say you don't buy in & then get sick & go to the hospital & can't afford it - who's paying then - all of us". First, that is part of the problem in driving up costs. Second, I know someone personally that does not buy because he is healthy & doesn't want to spend his money. Obama's response - after stumbling for a few seconds - well, we would charge them back premiums or something. Are you kidding me? Why would they buy in then? You can go without insurance - bank your money & then in the event you get sick - you just have to pay the back premiums? People will be dropping their insurance. How does that ensure people are taking advantage of preventive medicine? I worked in insurance for 22 years. The entire premise behind it - more people pay in - it reduces cost. Hillary's plan includes subsidies for those that cannot afford it & has a cap on premiums - as a % of earnings to keep the price fair. With the savings in adminstrative costs - the premiums will come down for everyone. Let's be fair. The mailer doesn't say any of this - this is as much a distortion as complaints made by Obama - re: Reagan comments. No-one is allowed to play politics with Obama - but he can. Saying the picture is a concidence is ridiculous - they were just talking about that 90's campaign on the news - about a month ago. Anyone involved in politics back in the 90's remembers Harry & Louise.

Wow, he compared it to Nazis? If it was the reverse and Obama's people said that, that's what the headline would be.

>>> in fact behind the scenes, his camp has been attacking the Clintons as much as they've been attacking him.<<<

That is simply not true.

Hopefully someone will be able to post the Health Care mailer that the Clinton campaign is screaming about AND the 2 mailers containing totally false statements and distortions about Obama's Soc Sec and pro-choice record that the Clinton campaign put out .... and then let's talk about who is slinging mud and being unfair.

To the best of my knowledge, the Obama campaign dealt with the false and very destructive rumors as just another campaign effort they had to combat as best they could (with a calling campaign in NH, and a mailer of their own in Nev.) and didn't run screaming to the press and holding conference calls whining about the unfairness of it all. Perhaps they should have.

So far, to my knowledge, no one has identified any factual distortion in the Obama Health Care mailer, questioning only use of a picture similar to one used in a TV campaign many years ago. Since there are only so many ways to depict a family worrying about medical insurance bills and since we don't know the age of the person who selected or approved this picture, it's not even clear that the similarity was intended as some sort of subliminal message, although that is certainly a legitimate question to ask.

Saying "all politicians are crooked" and "everyone slings mud" doesn't make it so. Some politicians ARE more crooked than the other and some sling mud and some don't -- it's up to the voter to figure out which kind a particular candidate is. If there has been equal deceptive practices on both sides, there should be facts to prove that. Saying doesn't make it so.

Correction:
I meant "the false and very destructive MAILERS"

Posted by: Elizabeth | Feb 1, 2008 9:08:14 PM

How sad on the part of the Obama campaign to totally misrepresent Sen. Clinton's healthcare plan. It doesn't require people to change insurance if they like the insurance they have. Those who don't have insurance would have several options to choose from.
The Obama campaign needs to do it's research better before issuing attacks like this one.

Obama is as dirty as anyone on campaign trail.
He wouldnt give most of his voters a second glance on the street.
He is sneaky and main stream media doesnt call him out but *OH WAIT the republicans will.

No doubt he will cry race or some other they are picking on me excuse.

His rock star campaign is just that. Loud music and a party atmosphere. I dont want a rock star i want a presidential candidate.

Posted by: Blair H | Feb 2, 2008 8:53:48 AM

At least Obama will answer a question with a streight answer, like his Health plan, all we get from Clinton is no real answer but a run around. Neather pln is perfict, but his is the better of the two.

The truth is we are already paying for those who have no health coverage. No one is turned away from needed medical attention whether they have paid for insurance or not. We pay for it with skyrocketing premiums, and through taxes and longer waits at emergency hospitals. So what's the big deal about mandating coverage? I like that better than being forced to pay for people who CHOOSE not to have coverage. If you truly can't pay for health insurance, as the saying goes "you can't get blood out of a turnip", so someone else will pick up the tab. So, who is it that's really concerned about being "forced" to pay? Perhaps it's those people who would prefer to spend their limited incomes on non-necessities (perhaps cigarettes?) and then let the rest of us bail them out when they are ill or injured. These are probably the same people who drive automobiles without liability insurance.

The definition of operational excellence is to get it right the first time.. hilary care in 93 not only resulted in the republican revolution of 94 which lead to the dems losing 12 senate seats and 80 in the house by 2000-she conducted her meetings in cheyney like fashion-and could not even get her bill to a vote with dems in control of the house and senate... she bit off far more than she could chew then and the same will be true now.. obama's plan will be hard enough to pass but hilary has no shot as no republican will ever support her plan and you need at least 60 senators to support your plans to pass any bill.
