Hillary Clinton: 'I Am Proud of the United States of America'

February 20, 2008 9:56 PM

ABC News' Christine Byun reports: While her opponent's camp attempts to clarify recent remarks, Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton emphasized that she was “proud of the United States of America.

“This country has given me so many opportunities, so many blessings, I am proud of the United States of America, and what we stand for, and what we have achieved in history,” the New York senator and former first lady said while campaigning in Hidalgo, Texas.

Clinton’s declaration comes after Michelle Obama, the wife of Democratic candidate, Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., stirred up controversy over comments she made that some suggest as unpatriotic.

Clinton encouraged the crowd to participate in early voting, prior to Texas’ March 4th primary. She tried appealing to the crowd, touting her ties to the state and to Hispanic community leaders.

She talked about fixing the “broken immigration system” and helping Mexico’s economy. The boisterous crowd often responded to her with loud choruses of cheers and applause –- but there were a couple of sections with empty seats. Signs adorned the arena that read “Todos Con Hillary” and “This One is for Ann,” referring to the late former Texas Gov. Ann Richards.

Clinton, again, tried to distinguish herself from Obama, repeating that she is “better prepared” to be  commander in chief. She promised to “work [her] heart out” if elected.

“I will be there for you every single day. If you will stand with me, in early voting and on March 4th, if you will be there, voting for me, you can count on me to be there for you!” Clinton said.

Wake America, before you vote another nice guy like Bush. Obama is just words and not substance nor a doer. The media just creater the aura of Obama. The media helped elected Bush too and the war. I hope God will give miracle to Hillary Clinton, to save this country from people who think this is not serious bussiness.

Can't argue with Hillary on that one, where else can you go and exploit the public like she has and still have a chance at continuing the pillage.

Way to position yourself on par with the future first lady. I am glad Hillary is distinquishing herself from Michelle. However, we all will have to wait until next year when Michelle is the first lady, then Hillary can debate Michelle's lack of experience in picking out the White House china.

Obama is a McGovern class liberal. Personally, I like the guy, but he's unelectable because of it. This is shaping up like 1972 all over again. Hillary has the right stuff for leadership, but Obama outclasses her in broad oratory skills. He doesn't have much going in the substance arena, but neither did Reagan. However, Reagan was clear on his values, I'm not sure that is the case with Obama. Hillary is clear on values. McCain is clear on values. Democrats are once again throwing caution to the window.

At the beginning of the primaries, I was somewhat interested, but really was planning on waiting to see who the Democratic nominee would be, since I knew there was no way I would vote Republican (Bush hangover as well as not really liking the choices). As the candidates revealed themselves, I was excited to see the great choices I had.

Since he ran for Senate in Illinois, I have always been a fan of Obama, but I still had my Clinton allegiance and I was excited for the chance to see them back in charge. It would be safe to say that I was going to vote for Hillary at that time.

I changed my mind after hearing Obama's speech after his Iowa victory. HIs message of change and unity was refreshing and I couldn't believe that I felt this excited for a candidate for President, but I did and I called my mom (who was also supporting Hillary) to tell her how I felt. I told her that even though I wasn't around for the Kennedy brothers' campaigns, that I felt an excitement and energy that those two candidates must have stirred into their generation of voters.

As Obama gained momentum, I started to feel bad for Hillary. I did still want to see a woman President and she is more than qualified. But I agree with Obama's point that it is time for a change in leadership in Washington. It is time to break from the past. So I decided after Super Tuesday that I would still support Obama, but that it wouldn't be that bad if Hillary won the nomination.

Fast forward to now...and I will tell you that any sympathy I had for Hillary Clinton is gone. It's these tactics she's using to try to steal away the nomination. Obama has tapped into something and that's the nature of politics. He's got the momentum. Let him run with it. This fight is now personal for her and not because she cares about the country, at least that's how it seems to me. I feel she is desperate and is trying to hold onto whatever power the Clinton's think they have left. For someone who prides herself at working "very hard", she seems to be taking the easy way out.

I will be so angry if her careless campaigning harms the Democratic Party's chances at victory this fall. I am appealing to all Clinton supporters to stop the negative attacks and giving ammunition to the Republicans. Remember what this election is for. Democrats have a chance to reclaim the White House and reshape our country. This is the fierce urgency of now.

Let's not blow it.

Couldn't Hillary get a fair share of the now revived Mc Cain Keating Five scandals as well? McCain was one of them, but so was Hillary's dear friend and endorser John Glenn.

It would be nice btw if some jounalists would write a good story about the flow of cash in the Clinton household, and more spefically about their Arabian connections.

If you're looking for clean hands, I suppose Obama is the safest bet. McCain has a very long story of bad behavior; and his poor wife has been on trial for drugs addiction theft (check her bio on Wikipedia).

We may not be as bewildered by him as the kids out there, but let's have Obama do the job. Clinton or McCain would both mean a disaster of scandals and the very end of America's once great international reputation. I saw it rise during WW II and sink under Billie Clinton and Bush junior; a very sad thing to witness.

So yes, Obama indeed in this campaign is our last hope for a decent USA.

So yesterday Clinton said during an interview with WJAR "You know, I've been proud a lot of America," "I think we've all been disappointed in our country. But I've been proud of America on many occasions during my lifetime."

And today, she's Ms. Red, White and Blue???? Hmmmmmm......how unsuspiciously desperate.

Posted by: denise | Feb 20, 2008 11:29:48 PM

YEAH...like we are going to get our national reputation back when we pull out of Iraq and it dissolves into civil war and COMPLETE chaos.

Posted by: nick | Feb 20, 2008 11:47:53 PM

The 'better prepared' line is sounding more and more hollow, as voters try to connect the dots between that claim and her campaign's seeming lack of preparedness and organization.

Posted by: Paul | Feb 20, 2008 11:48:03 PM

You know, I know where Michelle Obama was coming from. After seven years of Bush, I was not proud of the way America was behaving abroad or at home. We have done many things to disappoint, embarass and disillusion me from the great moments of American History I was taught as a kid. To make Michelle Obama's statement an issue of patriotism allows no critical thinking--nor even allows one to be an agent of change. If Clinton's so proud of America, why not let a Republican keep leading? Let's see if we can build a bridge to the next Abu Ghraib.

Posted by: Jerome | Feb 21, 2008 12:09:37 AM

Talk about desperate. I think its pathetic that Hillary would try to spin a poor choice of words (on Michelle Obama's part) as being something hugely significant or serious.

Nobody in their right mind is going to believe the Obama family is unpatriotic. Nor would anybody in their right mind believe someone as intelligent as Michelle Obama would say that she has never been proud of America, even if it were the truth. She's too smart to do that. She simply made a poor choice of words when trying to communicate about how proud she is of how many Americans are standing up for change this year.

Yet Hillary jumps on the opportunity to push the view that Michelle is unpatriotic. Hillary, once again, shows her true nature. She would do or say anything to win. Sad.

Go Obama!! Go Michelle!

jerome seems to lack reading skills. michelle obama hasn't been ashamed of america for 7 years, but for her entire adult life. that is until her husband might become president, then magically america is awesometown.

Posted by: bob | Feb 21, 2008 12:45:24 AM

Only stupid people are fill proud after so many years under Bush. Yes. They are proud of Abu graib.

Posted by: guevera | Feb 21, 2008 1:40:40 AM

Hillary is a wrong wrong wrong choice for America. But this statement is undebatable that we should be proud Americans of this America we have, otherwise pack up and leave.

Posted by: Jen | Feb 21, 2008 1:49:34 AM

Hillary's entire message for years has been that America is a country undeserving of affection or loyalty from either foreigners or Americans because of its 2 class system: the abusers and the victims.

She despises 1/2 of all Americans: Men. She sees women as helpless victims (guess where she gets that) for whom she can claim to be the champion/avenger. She has no more affection or respect for women than a fly. Women are objects to her for her self aggrandizement. She is not qualified to do any one of millions of jobs that women do every day. She can't even drive a car. She is the dumbest woman I know in terms of her not even knowing the limits of her knowledge and how those limits should give her pause before trying to take control of people's lives. Her entire being is composed of two attributes: She is a man hater and a Communist. She tries to hide these qualities behind a veneer of "caring," and "fighting hard" and her famous "stances." Her world view is very similar to that of The Communist Manifesto.

She is a far greater danger to America than Bin Laden, Putin, or any other international lunatic.

Hang it up Hil'ry, Hang it up. Your support is shallow, your qualifications weak, as front-runner you had appeal, as a loser your politics reek.

Hang it up, Hil'ry, hang it up.

This obvious ploy to make a dig at Michelle Obama for her "proud" statement is so cheap and sad. It makes the whole political process look like some kind of circus.

Posted by: Omar | Feb 21, 2008 2:46:17 AM

Apparently, some of you guys don't know what you're talking about.

This was taken out of context.

Hillary Clinton said pretty much the same thing when I saw her speak in San Diego, February 1st.

Another cheap shot by the media, to put out more negative news about Hillary. Meanwhile, look who's been the media's favorite for the past three weeks! The guy who ditches debates, and never explains what he is going to do.

Posted by: Carlos Bulling | Feb 21, 2008 3:33:15 AM

"Hillary says.....if you will be there, voting for me, you can count on me to be there for you!”

Well, that's not true Hillary and you know it let me share with everyone my families experience after voting for you on your first senate run.....

I voted for you for NY Senator and my 7 year old daughter got all excited about it because she saw my excitement so she wrote you a letter saying, " she wanted to be the second female President because you would be the first one" and you never even responded. I know you got her letter and that you read it 'cause your staff mentioned to me that you did indeed recieve it.

You could have found a minute to write a line or two and acknowledged that you recieved my little girls letter it would have ment the world to her. And I know you must have office staff they could have written a few lines to my daughter in your stead if you were too busy. My little girl has grown since then, she went through brain surgery a while back but is doing fine now and has a B average on the Regents in spite of missing so much school.

I'm voting for "change" Hillary because I can see that once you have peoples' vote they then become the "little people" to you, remember Leona Helmsley?"

So in closing I wonder if you feel perplexed, Hillary because you're losing your race for the presidency maybe this has cleared up for others what they can expect after casting a vote for you. Still hurts me when I think about it and need to get it off my chest how you could ignore my child that adored you and looked up to you.

PATHETIC! - I am proud of America. Talk about beating out the issue!

Posted by: carmen | Feb 21, 2008 5:04:14 AM

Apparently, being patriotic is not an important characteristic of a presidential candidate any longer. I was already questioning Obama's disturbing behavior when it comes to this matter but his wife sealed that deal for me.I thought, maybe, the lunar eclipse last night was a sign that the aliens were coming to take Obama back to planet LALA!

If American can just wait a moment and reason. Hillary represent a very good solution to American problem rather than Obama but the press is making things worse for the Clintons but i am sure they will regret this very soon. You Americans believe more in good speeches and sweet tongues to the actual little gentle words of solutions but you know what? Empty barrrels make the largest noise and the whole of America will regret this .Clinton would have been the very best president for you now but it is a pity you are ignoring the path of success and treading towards the path of failures. I will also like to add that why are most black Americans going for Obama? because they desperately want a black man to be the American presidentand care less what he can offer it is so unfortunate. I dont think it is right like that , to me they have turned this election to a kind of racism war in which the general Americans do not notice

I was talking to my friends last night, who are soldiers at Fort Hood in Texas. They think Obama would be a disaster for the military. HILLARY has served on the security committee and made several trips to Iraq. People- Obama has been to Iraq once. Just once. Please think of our soldiers' safety and consider NOT voting Obama. We need a patriotic vetted leader. Not someone who votes "Present' and dodges decision making. Hillary is a fighter. We need that in a Commander in Chief.

Obama is a good speech reader and that's it. He has nothing else. He's a hypnotist that will lead all who follow right over the edge. wake up fools. On second thought, please follow him over the edge. Good riddance.

Genga - now the Clinton team is convinced CNN is out to get them, too? Wow, the world is changing.

Posted by: Paul | Feb 21, 2008 9:40:51 AM

Mr. Obama speaks about fixing Washington and bringing new ideas and that he represents change. He talks about his childhood, talks about the people he had met in Chicago streets. However when it comes to his million dollar house, he completely forgets about the round which he had with the lobbyist Mr. Rezko before he bought he house. How many of us would forget the events relating to the purchase of our first home and if that home happens to be a million dollar one , makes it even more sweeter and fond.

Mr. Obama is an opportunist like most of the politicians and what change can such politicains bring who themselves are involved with lobbyists. Making speeches is different from actions, surely.

We're all so glad to know that you're so proud of your country, Hillary. Proud of the war, proud of NAFTA, are we? Mrs. Obama did say she was proud of her country too, only she qualified it to say for the first time in her adult life. Well, let's see, she was born in 1964, so her adult life began in 1985. Reagan was in his last term, followed by Bush, Clinton, and Bush. Her words struck a chord with me because I am very proud to be an American. But I'm not proud of what the leaders of my country (for the most part) have done to the prestige, morals, and morale of my country since 1985. I, like Michelle Obama, for the first time in my adult life am proud of America because the people are hungry for change. And with a less spin and venom from the Clinton camp, maybe we'll get the change we need. This white female will vote for at least a chance to get away from the past 20 years.

After hearing Rev. Jackson's comments, the message is clear: Democrats who want to gain the help of their opponents supporters should think twice about posting nasty comments. Now is the time to look toward November.

The Republicans are going to try to cause trouble between the two camps. Ask yourself, am I helping to unite or helping to divide the Democratic Party?

PS - neither the Obama supporters nor the Clinton supporters are without fault here.

Has anyone one seen the picture of Senator Barack Obama, Governor Bill Richardson, Hillary Clinton, and Ruth Harkin were all standing with their hand over their hearts during the national anthem. The article said Sen.Barack Hussien Obama refused to put his hand over his heart and also refused to asay the pledge. This is scary people.

If she's so proud why did she rent out our heritage: The Lincoln Bedroom?

Why did her staffers trash the Whitehouse offices when they left?

Posted by: JB | Feb 21, 2008 11:01:47 AM

The drum beats from the conservative commentators like Bill Bennet have already started around Michelle Obama comments using patriotism to motivate conservatives.

Michelle Obama's "For the first time in my adult lifetime I am really proud of my country", may "fire up and ready to go" those conservatives reluctant to vote for war hero John McCain.

Obama supporters do not have be Karl Roves to admit that Michelle Obama has given the Republicans a election theme around patriotism.

Florida Voter - good points.

I think Michelle Obama is a little to aggresive for my taste and can be abrupt at times. But im sure she loves her country and the power

Posted by: Bishop | Feb 21, 2008 12:20:43 PM

I saw Hillary on Feb. 7 at Washington-Lee High School in Arlington, VA. There was a long line of people waiting to get in, but the security folks cut off the line just after I got in. I don't know why they did that-- maybe because of a fire code or something-- but there were empty seats remaining in the gym. So it looked as if not many people turned out, when in fact, many people who *wanted* to get in were turned away at the door!!! The same thing may have happened in Texas, thus explaining away the ''couple of sections with empty seats.'' Hillary's team needs to book larger venues. Everyone else needs to not worry about empty seats, because that doesn't mean anything.

It amazes me how all of attack Hillary,
now how old were most of you? Its more then obvious that you were children listening to your parents and you haven't changed. You still show a lack of respect (Yet cry for people to respect you), you are rude and mean.
And I am truely sick of little drones like all of you Obama supporters,

I HOPE YOUR PLEASED WHEN HE GETS NOTHING DONE WILL YOU VOTE FOR HIM AGAIN?

And it sounds like Michelle Obama has her racial issues she a lit firecracker,
can't wait to hear what she says next.

Nothing to feel proud of after 7 years of destruction of our constitution. I'm not proud of this country at all. I'm not proud of a country that tortures people, murders innocent civilians and elects a fraud like GWBush! Shame on America for turning its back on the value of democracy. I agree with Mrs. Obama and I hope when her husband is president we will finally have something to be proud of again.

Posted by: JGer | Feb 21, 2008 2:18:19 PM

A lifetime of being proud of the United States of America should not be an option of any candidate for the Presidency or his/her spouse. If you aren't proud of the place you want to work at from the get go, then find another place to work.

However, the existence of patriotic pride is not the only question being raised about Michelle Obama. From what I have been reading, Mrs. Hussein Obama has harbored a deep anger/hate for the United States that goes back to her college days at Princeton.

It seems that her senior thesis is so filled with hate mongering and racism that the Obamas refuse to release a copy of it to the public. But, everything comes to those who wait. Rumor is that another copy of the hateful, racist thesis is out there. One could deduce that the thesis will be released at the correct strategic moment.

At any rate, the Democratic governor from my state is neglecting to remember the job she was elected to do and spending her time campaigning for Obama in another state. Governor Sebelius must not believe that we have any work or problems to tend to here in Kansas. Or, maybe she is trying to position herself for a job. She better hope that Obama doesn't think her maiden name is Sinclair.

Should the Obamas get the Democratic nod in August (yes, it will take that long), I will be voting for John McCain. Just can't stomach the unpatriotic attitude.

And, sorry, Governor Sebelius. John doesn't have a job for the likes of you. It would have been better if you had stayed at home and done your job here in Kansas. Remember, that's the job we pay you to do.

BTW It looks like the Serbs are Very Proud of their country as well... real patriots! They're burning American flags today and setting fire to the American Embassy...

National Pride never is a good thing in itself. One can be proud of specific people, actions, historical events, ideas etc. , but unspecifically and uncritically embracing one's 'nation' (what is that btw?) or national flag is a dumb and often dangerous act. Just as burning national flags and condemning whole nations is.

Posted by: SleeplessInHouston | Feb 21, 2008 5:22:14 PM

I have been unimpressed with Barack Obama. I was unsure of who I would support at the beginning of this races, but for me the choice is now crystal clear. I want to know, very specifically, how the candidate's policies will affect ME. Call me selfish, but my family has been hit hard during the Bush administration. Hillary Clinton has told me how she will make it easier to pay back student loans, get decent healthcare, and someday buy a home without fear of foreclosure. Better yet, she's told me how she plans to pay for it all and get it done!

Posted by: Sarah | Feb 21, 2008 8:53:18 PM

It's funny to me that Mrs. Obama can have her say, but if Hillary speaks, 'she is exploiting MO's words'. There should be balance to hear from both. Mr. Obama talks about things Clinton says or her husband says and there's no outcry like this. Double standards. I was raised under them and I do not like double standards.

Posted by: mmeyer | Feb 22, 2008 6:35:46 AM

From a European perspective, there is no doubt that Clinton would make a better President than Obama. She won't win the nomination because the American voters are very fickle and easily swayed by flashy media and spin....and yet again America would vote for Obama because he is the complete opposite to Bush.

What America needs is a steady hand with some knowledge of what needs to be done to make it a great country again. No doubt Obama would make a great future President, but he is too inexperienced and untested to govern a country the size of America.

I hope in 4years time people are not only regretting their choice especially with the mounting threat that China poses to American position in world, the foreclosure issue, threats from terrorist All Obama seems to want to do is talk to everybody without any preconditions and just to make people love America. Think about it carefully, If Obama was around during the 2nd World War, I bet he would have sort to have talks with the Nazis, rather than destroy them. Now is not the time to either vote a Hawk(McCain)who wants America to stay in Irak for 100yrs nor a complete and total novice in Obama, who seriously believes the best way to solve the Irak problem is to withdraw from Irak immediately and hold talks with Syria & iran (both sworn enemies of th US). People get real!!!

Forget all the fancy speeches and get real Americans... don't overcompensate or let rhetorics blind you. It is without any doubts that the best person for the job of President is Hillary. Also I have often wondered to myself like an outsider to American polotics, what is the crime that Hillary Clinton committed. I have read most things on her & her husband for the life of me, I couldn't find one thing she did that is so terrible that people like to hate her so. people claim she is very divisive a myth perpertuated by Obama & his campaign. From where I am sitting, she represents a strong, tough lady, with a miind of her own and to most so called mmodern western people who claim to be beacon of civilisation that is a threat to them.

I fear for America on the path is taking...and believe me in 10yrs time America might find it's influence, strength and position in world weakened, so please choose wisely Americans...

Healthcare and Economy are big issues this election season, but based on what I saw on the debate, why should the "working poor" be penalized for not having health insurance. Although you may get "affordable" health insurance, the cost for medications, doctors visits, and not to mention specialist leave everyone continuing to be poor. How is making parents accountable or peanlizing them for not providing health insurance for their children be "better" for the economy. Many Americans can barely make ends meet and the politics are protraying this to be benefical for us the "working poor". There are no clear answers only more questions are any of these candidates going to make a difference? None of them were Governors and Mayors, I know that "Elected" officals are there to represent us but which of us do they truly represent?
