Huckabee Reacts to Bush 41 Endorsing McCain

February 18, 2008 5:48 PM

ABC News' Kevin Chupka Reports: In a very snowy Appleton, Wisconsin this afternoon, former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee addressed the latest endorsement of his rival Arizonia Sen. John McCain by former President George H.W. Bush.

"Does his voice count more than the millions of Republicans across country?" Huckabee asked rhetorically.

As Huckabee prepares to begin his push in Texas, the endorsement of a Bush could affect the electorate in the Lone Star State. Huckabee doesn't think so, "I know about Texans -- they are very independent people. They are not people who just say follow the leader because someone told them they ought to. I sense that it will not have a huge impact on rank and file Republicans, the people who support me."

Later this week Huckabee will "remember the Alamo" and begin what many see as a last stand in Texas. Huckabee however continues to argue that the nomination belongs to no one until the magic number of 1191 delegates is reached. "We see the last stand only when someone has 1191 delegates." Huckabee said "Other than that we may go all the way to Minneapolis/St. Paul to the convention. It may be a brokered convention... And there's still a possibility that that's what could happen and if it does then there's a good chance I could be the nominee."

I wonder what would happen if ol' Huck were to BEAT George W. McCain in the great state of Texas?

Let's find out, shall we?

Huckabee is maneuvering into position to be chosen as Vice President under Old Man McCain. What OTHER reason could he have for continuing his campaign? At the moment, I will reluctantly vote for McCain, but NOT if Huckabee is on the ticket! I really wish he would go away and let McCain pick Romney as his running mate. Please, no more theocrats!

Good call, rmberryman. Huckabee is a huckster, but I don't think we need to worry about McCain choosing him as a Veep. He is hearing from people all around the country that they will sit it out, rather than vote for a religious bigot.

I believe it is not over till its over..and Mike Huckabee should continue to present himself a viable candidate.
You never know what tomorrow will bring and I do not think He should quite give up or conceed if their is any chance at all for victory. If you quit then their is no chance and Mike Huckabee isnt a quiter...God loves the underdog...because it puts pride in its place!!!!!!!!!!!..I wish the media would quit speaking for the people and let the people speak for themselve's Oh I forgot, then they would be out of a Job!

Huckabee obviously has no interest in being McCain's VP. If he was he would do what Mitt Romney did, resign from the race and give his delegates to McCain.

Oh, so if Huck is McCain's VP nod, you will vote for Hillary or Obama? (Or, just not vote at all?)

Very reasoned. Very mature. What war on terrorists, right?

McCains relationship with other Senators is a bit edgy. He is too high tempered to hold such a high office, and his foul language is uncalled for period!!!
I see Mike Huckabee as the only REAL CHOICE for a dedicated MAN who has his priorities in order. We may all be in for a suprise at the convention....
As they say "if ain't over til the fat lady sings!"

As someone who is not a big McCain fan, I must say, that Huckabee is growing more pathetic by the day. I have gone from thinking he was great to laughing my butt off everytime I hear his latest self serving proclamation. I cant wait until he is nothing but a sad footnote in the 08 nomination process. Everytime I see him I say to myself...wow, that dog won't hunt.

Isn't it great russs, that we can sit back and take shots and laugh at people far more accomplished than we will ever be? Its so nice to know that, despite someone who is obviously better than us, it is still possible for us, as lesser accomplished people, have a right in this country to cut these public servants down to size. Yup, I am sure this kind of treatment will just further encourage our best and brightest into politics...

Any talk of terrorist from the dem's and McCain followers need to learn the new world order and realize these are the terrorist going to attack America from the inside out. If you are familiar and do not agree, please explain how you call yourself an American? Huckabee and Paul maybe considered several "names", but they are into protecting Americas borders and leaving our states being the now 50 not 10 regions! If that is what you want than I can not relate.

axistogrid: Huckabee is the underdog that does know how to hunt. He's just circling his target and when the real agenda of the front runners hits home, you'll wish you understood his hunting strategy. Get a clue and support keeping our state and nations bounders in place. I personally am not looking for civil and WWIII, as soon as the front runners are.

McCain would be stupid to pick the Huckster as VP. McCain needs to pick a REAL conservative to unite the party behind him and Huck is no conservative. He's just a political opportunist in the Clinton mold only in this race for himself. Go away Huckster!

Remember readers, no self-respecting Republican would threaten to sit out the election in November or threaten to vote for the Democrats.

These people who make these empty threats are Democrat trolls. It is permissible, even laudable, to ignore their drivel when they attack our Republican candidates.

They want to divide the Republican Party. Do not let them. Who other than a Democrat or Communist would libel both Republican candidates?

Noregion 5, I think you misread my post...I voted for huckabee in my state, and respect the man a lot. We may support him for different reasons than you, but I know he is a good man. My sarcasm was aimed at another poster that was ripping these candidates unmercifully with no thought as to their real accomplishment. I do respect whoever runs for this office, even if I disagree with them, as they have all accomplished a lot in their lives to get in this position. Except for hilary, she just married well. I understand huckabee, and by the way, I have also been a financial supporter since before he had 2% in the polls.

Huckabee is, and always will be, an intellectual lightweight.

Posted by: Jeff | Feb 19, 2008 10:25:40 PM

One thing people have not thought about is McCain's age. It's possible he could have a stroke, heart attack or illness before the nomination.

Remember the Alamo?

All we need is a few good men!

Posted by: SMC | Feb 20, 2008 10:28:25 AM

.All you guys who think Huckabee has no chances are very wrong. He is the only one who stays for this nation good. He has the fear of God and he knows very well that this country was built uppon the Christian values. He knows also that there still are many christians in this country who will no vote for an unGodly man and woman. None of the rest of people remained in the race is a true christian. All are fake christians exccept Mike Huckaby. They just need and want your vote only, they don't want to do anything for you, they are are working for some other interests in this country biger than yourself. So don't make any mistake, they are not here for you. So go and vote Mike H. and you'll be good. You'll see it.
