Huckabee vs. Romney in Georgia -- and Dallas in the Super Bowl?
February 03, 2008 1:01 PM
ABC's Kevin Chupka reports: During a press conference outside Atlanta this morning, former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee maintained his harsh rhetoric for Mitt Romney, but explained better why he’s focusing so much on the former Massachusetts governor and largely leaving Sen. John McCain unscathed. “John McCain has not been dismissive of me. He’s not suggested through his surrogates or himself going out and saying that I will drop out of the race and I appreciate that he recognizes me as a worthy competitor and not as a nuisance that’s keeping me from it”
Huckabee has spent the last several days lashing out at Romney using language we have not seen since the run up to the Iowa caucuses when Huckabee went decidedly negative in his stump speech and stopped a negative TV ad from running at the eleventh hour. Today in Georgia, where Huckabee is making a push to take some of the state’s 72 delegates, he told reporters, "If anyone should step aside, maybe Mr. Romney should -- after all, he’s the one that spent $100 million to have the same market share that I’ve had for $7 million. I would say that anyone with an MBA from Harvard Business School probably would look at that kind of analysis and say, ya know, his product isn’t selling as well as mine is for the amount of money he spent on the market."
Huckabee reiterated what he’s been saying all week; that he is in this race until someone hits the magic number of 1191 delegates, or as he put it, "until the final bell."
As for the most important question of the day, one reporter asked simply, "Giants or Pats?" The Governor deftly dodged the question, saying, "Dallas Cowboys, next year –- ya gotta understand, when it comes to a game between two northeast teams, God bless ‘em both but I’m a Cowboys fan."
Go Giants!

Huck's got a better chance to be in the WH as McCain's VP. For that alone he won't be getting out anytime soon.

How can anyone think this guy is a Christian? Some of the nasty ugly stuff he says has turned me away. I live in Georgia and wish he had left that nasty tone back in Iowa. I will vote for Mitt!

It's not nasty to point out the truth, even if the truth is a little bit harsh.
The fact of the matter is that Romney and Huckabee both started out with about equally low levels of name recognition, and in spite of Romney spending 14 times as much as Huckabee so far, they're about equal in market share in spite of the media putting so much effort into dismissing Huckabee by framing this thing as a two way race (see for instance how many more questions CNN gave to Romney and McCain as compared to Huckabee in the recent California debate).
I'm sorry to say this given that he has some very good positions on the issues, but if the Liberal Media was afraid at all of Romney, MSNBC (which is the most Liberal TV Network in America) NEVER would've gave Romney so many more questions and so much more airtime in the Florida debate.
And even in the post-show, you could see known Democratic Party operative Chris Matthews building up Romney and calling him the clear winner of the debate (while at the same time not so much as mentioning Huckabee).

Huckabee has had little difficulty improving his name recognition no doubt due to the large 180M+ Evangelical interest group. I suspect he's been campaigned for during religious meetings and over the pulpit. Romney doesn't have that luxury. So, there's a pretty clear reason why Romney has had to spend more of his own money.
Last night the news showed a Huckabee rally where the MC introduced him as "the man who believes the way we believe." As a non-protestant, that's a turn-off. Romney is in a close second place without this preferential treatment from religious pundits.
Romney doesn't have the support of many special interest groups because he has purposely steered away from owing them favors. A candidate like that is a dream come true for the electorate.
Huckabee gains votes if he's preferred by Evangelical bigots. If he sidesteps the responsibility of reminding the electorate not to let religious differences factor into their vote, that can be safely called thinly-veiled bigotry. That makes him a biased, provincial religious leader rather than a presidential candidate.
I find it hard at this point to believe Huckabee's claim that He's focused more on Romney than McCain because McCain is less dismissive. I find it easier to believe that Huckabee wants to block Romney's candidacy because of bigotry.
When the smoke clears, I think Huckabee's candidacy will have stirred up and reinforced bigoted attitudes - something the world doesn't need. Religious extremists elsewhere in the world stir up hate against a largely Christian America. I don't think Huckabee can change that.
Since when was calling a good thing evil a good idea? Have a look at Romney's commitment to his family and to living a moral life. Forget political

The only ones talking about Huckabee's religious beliefs are you, the media, and all the other God haters on here. You have no other facts to state your disbelief in Huckabee other than use his christian background and the christian that are prohuck to bash him. You are the one bringin religion into the primary, not Mike Huckabee, so good try not buying your product, Mr. Bill Nicolich! GO Huckabee!
